60 years on this planet I've worked in almost all the trades now trying brick laying I watched 20 video's your the first I've seen butter the ends the way I do (no point ) thanks for confirmation and improvement on my technique , I've learnt alot also by what you don't say- just watching .thanks great video's
funny isnt it, when you have done something so long and are extremely good like this, it is so hard to show somebody in slow motion or even at times explain how and what you do, you just do it lol but this was an excellent video and explained great!
I once had a mason tender he use to put marbels in my mud-but bricklayers are hard to find these days-but did me well when i retired from the bricklayers union in america-thanks for the video.
Little tip for you - you really should be using a wall starter on a job like this. I guess every day is a learning day, even for an experienced pro like you. Keep practicing, you’ll get there!
Very nice and easy to follow ‘how-to’ video for beginners 👍🏻 I plan to build the mailbox out of bricks myself, so your video will be very handy :-) thanks for sharing your experience!
Hi Budd, thanks for the video. Helped me a lot… admittedly I was about 60 or more times slower and more messy but I made the conservatory step fairly well. Thanks again 👍🏽
This is a better method of buttering the brick for me as a novice but still not mastered it. Laying the beds pretty easy in comparison. A brilliant video, great help
Hi budd, I came here looking how to lay down the mortar by moving the trowel side-to-side. You've nailed it for me, many thanks. Your mortar is lovely and fluid, mixing by hand I'm not getting quite that consistency, but then I think the 'building sand' I purchased is more toward sharp sand.
Thats great perping that is. You see so many bricklayers who have never mastered the art of perping up. They chuck down bricks super quick and think they are super trowels, but can't get a full perp!
Good to see that actually rolling the mortar is still an important skill, to many people don't bother👍would be good to see a video on your tool kit budd
Budd.. Just to say thanks.. Always struggled with my mix.. Tried your method with the little drop of magic in a bottle and WOW! it came out like soft butter, truly bootifull boy! Made everything so much easier .. So Thank you mte.. Now, “Have you gotta light boy.. ? “
Really good video - rolling the muck had to be done if your not using plasticiser or lime with gritty sand (render sand). The advantage is with gritty sand is you wont be repointing gables and chimneys for 100 years - however you still have to fill the perps - seen plenty of popped perps on supermarket builds high up 4 years old......keep up the good work Budd
Any chance you could do a video showing some repair work, like for example if someone has knocked bricks out of the middle of a wall and you want to replace them. Is it just the same as this? How do you get the last brick in etc, also for repairing holes where a boiler flue has to be bricked back up when changing old boilers or water heaters with the square flues to a newer round flue for example. I have no idea how you would fill the gaps etc.
a very informative and useful video by a true craftsman. you make it look so easy! I think that getting the mix to the correct consistency is crucial but is something I can't seem to get right. it is either too sloppy that it falls off the trowel and slops down the brick wall face, or too stiff necessitating using a hammer to 'force' the brick level. then sometimes the mortar is setting too quick when laying the brick so I have to take the brick off, scrape the mortar off and do it again, very frustrating. can you share your tips on achieving the perfect mortar consistency please?
David thanks for watching, if you look through our videos we have one on how to mix mortar, remember you have to be very patience, many thanks for watching, hope this helps 👍👍👏
Great demo. I am going to give it a go and build a short brick wall about 1m high x 2.5m long. What is the correct gap between the bricks horizontal and vertical. I’m guessing about 10mm. Is that about right?
Out of interest, why no tie-in on the original wall? Asking as they were used on my small extension and the use of made complete sense to me, when it was explained. Otherwise if I could learn this skill, bricklaying, would definitely help with certain projects.
Would love to see you guys build an artisanal brick oven. Possibly even a pizza oven. Also, maybe even show us all how to make bricks themselves if you haven't already. 👍. Cheers
If you need to build a front garden wall. Just one side ie 4ft by 10ft long. Can you do it in single brick? Also do you cut your half bricks before hand. Finally can I soak the bricks in water since I'll be much slower to lay them etc
Use the excess to butter the end of the brick you just laid, not throw it into the top of the brick (waste). Also spread the mud, furrow it and go on. No need to play with it by flattening it out.
not a brickie im a roofer so not questioning you , very skilled man you are but didnt see you tie it to the white wall ? any reason to that im here to learn only reason im asking. liked and subbed
Nice work 👍 did you tie in the old building into the new work ?? If so what did you use a wall starter key ?? Also can you explain the difference between breeze blocks ? Why some people lay Striaght onto a foundation others lay trench block first ?

What you’ve got to do is roll the muck, then roll the muck .... roll the muck some more, then put a very very small trowel full on the wall, lay a brick and tap it about for 10 mins 🤦🏼♂️

You need to have the cavity at one end of the top of the brick slightly closed, because of the side cavity, and the intermittent bottom cavity too.

As you roll the mortar for ever I lay 6 bricks
