Southpaws - Stop Whining. You have a BIG advantage (if you are orthodox, you need to watch too!)

  • Go Here to Download Your Book - www.myboxingcoach.com - I have been posting boxing training videos for a long time. I'm often asked by southpaw boxers to make videos specific for them. But, this feels a bit like whining. As a southpaw, you have a big advantage over orthodox boxers...it's down to familiarity.
    When it comes to boxing training videos specifically for southpaws, it's really very simple. Remember, you have a huge advantage because orthodox boxers are generally not used to you. Only 1 in 10 people are left handed. That means 9 out of 10 people we meet are orthodox. You are more familiar with them than they are with you.
    All boxing skills that coaches like me teach are the same. The mechanics are the same and the faults that occur are the same. So, if I'm teaching someone how to throw a jab, it will be exactly the same but in absolute reverse.
    Boxing skills don't care about southpaw or orthodox, they just want to be executed well. So, reverse them.
    Tactics are slightly different. There are some basic tactics to deploy when you meet an opponent of an opposing stance. So, a southpaw vs orthodox and vice versa
    But the reverse rule is in play here too.
    If I'm coaching a southpaw to box against an orthodox, there are some simple tactics that I would encourage:
    - Dominate the lead hand exchanges
    - Dominate the ground to your right (get your lead foot outside theirs)
    - When moving left, move slightly away to nullify their right hand
    If I'm coaching an orthodox against a southpaw, I get them to do the exact same but I reverse the final two:
    - Dominate the lead hand exchanges
    - Dominate the ground to your left
    - When moving right move slightly away.
    So, reverse it.
    Cheers
    Fran

    I agree. As a southpaw (well, I don't box, I do muay thai but the punches are the same) when a coach is explaining a combination with the terms "left" and "right" I don't register these words and instead I got used to thinking in terms of "lead" and "back". It makes my training sessions smoother, I don't have to stop and actively ask or repeat what was explained. I just do it how it is supposed to be done for me.
    Now, sometimes this puzzles the guys I drill with, since they think that at first I've got it wrong but it's not a problem. They realize what's going on very quickly.
    My only problem is sparring other southpaws, since I'm not used to it and find it awkward about as much as an orthodox fighter would find me awkward. But that gets sorted out with a bit more focus and being slightly more mindful during my rounds.
    Fran, thanks for the video, but here's a legitimate question that I think is one of the downsides of being left handed. The lead hand liver shot isn't there for us southpaws as much as it is for orthodox guys. I'd have to move to the inside and have to worry about their big right hand over my shoulder as I go for the liver. How would you approach such a shot and would you tackle it at all or is it just a small inconvenience that's not worth worrying about? Thanks

    • @myboxingcoach
      @myboxingcoach  2 года назад +7

      Really good comment that, and yes, lead hand and back hand is a great way of working it and is more often the way I phrase it in the gym. On that liver shot, you can loop the back hand - so a long range back hand hook. You only need it to land slightly to the right of the centre line below that rib...that'll do it, good southpaw shot.

      I do the exact same, my gym doesnt really use "left" and "right" any more. We almost entirely use a number system now so 1, 2 and 3 etc. So its easier to comprehend for righties and lefties. But yeah I've never really been confused on drills because you just have to use your own common sense to work the drill to your stance.

Main thing, getting use to the jab and getting outside. Avoid paddy-cake, seeking contact with my jab. Do learn the jab!! Great video Fran, it's interesting. I'm a southpaw and have no problem flipping it. In fact, I also practice the drills in an orthodox position as well for a few rounds. Like you say when thinking about tactics - the best thing you can do is watch southpaws. Whittaker, Hagler, Manny etc... - so when learning if i am having trouble - I do it orthodox slowly, then flip it round. Hope you are keeping well! 👍

    I enjoyed this vid! Since I'm equally comfortable in both... As a surfer I'm a 'Goofy foot', which means a 'South Paw'. We place our right foot forward on the surfboard, vs 'Regular' which are the 'Orthodox' surfers. Yet in boxing at first, I tried to keep the same stance as the opponent. Now I like mixing them up. Many times, I may pivot and come back in the opposite stance. So thanx again for making me think more about the subject...

    I think an interesting way of going about it is not getting too in the weeds about being an Orthodox or Southpaw fighter. It takes two to tango and tactics are dependent on your opponent. Whether if your opponent is same/closed or opposite/open stanced (heck even switch hitting); they're an outfighter, infighter etc; counter puncher, swarmer, etc. It'll take practice to see what works with the help of your coaches and gym-mates.
    Greatly appreciate the vid!
    I'm wondering if you've ever come across the cross guard. I know in the past it was much more common and have been wondering what's been the influencing factors to why it's changed over time? Did how refs/judges rule/score change and affect the sport? Similarly for long guard tactics Foreman-esqe.

    • @myboxingcoach
      @myboxingcoach  2 года назад +2

      Archie Moore was a great exponent of that guard, but I think he was just an all-round amazing fighter who could make any guard work. Norton and Frazier also. I just think it wasn't as effective as a solid double arm cover or half guard (what some call 'The Philly Shell'. Plenty of shots could get though, especially uppercuts and body shots

Because by doing this it helps keep you at perfect range not to far not to close an my first round ever I noticed my advantage rite away.

  • @aarkproductions
    @aarkproductions 7 месяцев назад

    I particularly began as a southpaw even though I'm right handed because I understand the advantage, training to spar orthodox,
    yes my goal is to take advantage of their jab, and yes I understand that once I can take advantage of that jab, I can come in with a combination,
    But I'm still susceptible to their cross, you have to be a bit understanding that it's just not that easy to flip everything on a mirror and how many coaches forced me to go into orthodox,
    When my intentions were clearly educated and for the purpose of getting that edge, another problem is once I face another southpaw,
    It's almost like I'm a beginner again, like a beginner Orthodox against another beginner orthodox, the problem with boxer's in particular is that alot of them are purists,
    "You can't cheat boxing" they say
    Yes from one perspective you're correct, but in my experience you learn to play by the rules so you can break them, so for some to say I'm cheating boxing by purposely training to have an advantage when the goal eventually is to find shortcuts is sometimes hard to stomache,
    Especially when you've racked up a decade into martial arts and everybody is right to a point but there's always a yes that's needed,
    In your experience you probably have to deal with alot of beginers that say
    "I'm more comfortable as a southpaw"
    And you know they have no experience, and they say nonsense, so I get the frustration, but guys who made it big as southpaws have particular trainers who know what they're doing, and atleast need advice, that's it I've said my peace again I understand the frustration

      Box in your natural stance. He even says in the video that the advantage is familiarity. If you spar an equal number of times, talent aside, chances are the southpaw is much more familiar boxing in the southpaw stance against all manners of opponents, whereas if you're switching it up all the time, you're going to have less familiarity.

    Sir, I don't want to advocate for the guy who asked you to make more videos specific to soutpaws, but generally speaking most youtube boxing videos are not suitable for southpaws indeed. Why? Because most videos are made for same stance vs same stance boxers (i.e. orthodox vs orthodox). Southpaws have an array of questions after watching those videos and rarely anyone is giving them answers. Allow me to put it this way - from southpaw newbie perspective during his first sparrings: "Mhm, this guy's liver is 2 meters away from my back hand.. And my liver is just within his lead head reach, fck, now what?" or "This 1-2 combo is not landing the way I saw it lands when two ortodox are fighting. I feel my jab is delivering way more power then my cross. Not sure that supposed to be that way.." Those are just few real examples about many issues southpaws are facing. I personaly use both stances, I am ambidexterous, so I can relate with southpaws' whining because they (we) do have way less available videos about tactics against different-stance boxers.
    P.S. Fran, your book is awesome, thank you so much sir.
