Honestly I get it, as a writer myself it’s kinda fun to make a character go through 4 extremely traumatic events within such a short timeframe, right after 3 seasons of even more trauma off course!! But of course that’s also ignoring season 5, gonna be the worst one for Hughie 100%

People just love giving their characters trauma, just like how people love doing crazy dangerous stuff to their sims, breaking legos, or putting out all of the disasters at once in City Skylines. It’s why you see characters in most action media go through the most insane injuries and survive it (John Wick). Something about destruction (physical AND mental) just activates the ape brain inside us.
Honestly the "Firecracker statutory" came and went so fast I had whiplash. I'm convinced the writers realized "aw shit, what if people like this character for the wrong reasons, like Homelander" She's 110% justified to pursue her vendetta against Starlight. "I was just a dumb mean kid" doesn't make what she did any better. One of the few good things about this season is that it acknowledged that Starlight lost the moral highground a long time ago when she left that man dead in the road.
Yeah, i really hope Sam would be an unstoppable threat in s5 , like a terminator. The thing i liked the most about new season finale is how they made some of the supes feel really terrifying through action scenes, (my favourite was the second fight with doppelganger, she was also really cool character, and was killed before show's passing left her without some twist of mystery)
