  • The Lakhe Dance is a vibrant traditional dance from Nepal, often performed in villages during festivals. Dancers dressed as the mythical demon "Lakhe" wear colorful costumes and masks, depicting a fearsome yet playful character.
According to stories passed down through generations, majipa lakhey is supposed to have fallen in love with a girl from Majipa. So, the demon takes a form of a human and enters the city to see his beloved. Upon knowing the fact that the person is a Lakhey, the people capture the lakhey and present him to the king.
The Lakhe meaning demon believed to be arrived from South India in 11th century is worshiped for its divine power and cherished with other deities during a great Indra Jatra festival is one of the distinct intangible cultural heritage within Newar community of Nepal.
Indra Jatra is also believed to have been started in the 10th century, during the reign of Gunakama Deva, who, according to Bajracharya, also started the trend of Lakhey and Pulu Kishi Pyakhan (dance) during the Jatra.
