Laurie, a tip you might want to consider. I bring one or two cardigans to mix and match with my tops but I use the carigans as tops by themselves with a silky scarf. Because the scarves take up little to hardly any space, I have more wearable options.
    I really enjoy your videos.

I started to take pictures of myself in the outfits before going. That way when I’m tired from traveling and can’t remember all my outfit ideas I just have to look at my phone. 😂 it also helps me to organize my packing list to what I know I will wear. I used to have these cute ideas for outfits and then never wear them.

I'm a frequent (very) long-haul flyer and I love your videos! Many years ago, i discovered a cheap black bag/backpack that's designed for mums carrying baby items and diapers. It has a b&w striped wipeable lining and multiple pockets (not too many, though). It also has two spaces for bottles on the outside, in one of which i keep my eye mask and sunglasses case. I sewed a couple of small d-rings to the outside just above one of the bottle spaces to which during the flight I clip lip balm, hand cream, and a tiny torch. They don't dangle around because they fit comfortably beside the mask and case inside the bottle space. I also sewed a piece of wide elastic to the back of the bag. In the airport, I slip it over the pull-out handle of my cabin roller. That way, the bag sits on top of the cabin roller without sliding off. The best thing about this bag is that the zipper to the main compartment is on an angle, so when you open it you can see most of the contents of your bag straight away. After trying out so many personal item bags over the years, I finally found the perfect one.

I am just finishing a 3 week European trip in a carry on. 😊 I didn't think I could do it. Merino wool dresses saved the day and it was 80-90 degrees. Also I marked packing cubes with contents which helped keep things orderly (sharpie on painter's tape).

@@brendaendries8584 I packed a capsule wardrobe based on navy & white 5-4-3-2-1 method. The weather was much warmer than I had expected (end of September), so “travel” outfits were a bit warm. If I were to go again, I’d pack more natural fabrics like cotton or linen and accept the wrinkles. Make sure you have good shoes for walking. Did laundry along the way. (5 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 “overs” like light jacket or sweater, sun protective clothing, 2 prs of shoes, 1 dress). Just used carryon and personal bag; best to keep it light and simple if you are planning to travel by train. Hope you have a great time.

BTW, I reverse the first step - I pack only one other pair of shoes (and flat slippers/beach shoes - fitkicks, which take up virtually no space) , but 2 bottom pieces (1 pair dressier pants, 1 pair capris or skirt or leggings, depending on weather). All bottoms are the same colour, usually black, so all tops go with all bottoms.

Hi Laurie - I know this is not really relevant to this video content but I wanted to share for other viewers. I have just traveled from London to Paris and Brussels to London via Eurostar trains. I was in Standard Premier class (right in the middle). Everywhere I read that I would be able to access the Eurostar Lounges in the train stations using my Amex Platinum. However, when we tried to enter, we were told that, although Amex Platinum cards do entitle holders to entry, if the card is issued in the US they will not let you in. Just want to give others a heads up! Thanks for everything you do!!

On my recent 4,000 km trip to visit my mother, I did check the weather, and got my clothes and shoes down to 1 carry on. The trouble is, it ended up being warmer than had been forecast, and the guest room had no air conditioning and was an oven. I had 2 short sleeve tops with me, but they did not dry quickly enough. I ended up getting Mum to drive me to her local Marshalls so I could pick up a couple more dressier T's. What I learned from that is to have more short sleeve/sleeveless tops, and only a couple of longer sleeve ones that could layer over those. I never wear a top twice without washing it in between, but if you have a long sleeve top over a T, it can be worn more than once between washes. Also, I am learning to do more with silk scarves - not just wear them around my neck or as a shawl, but styling them as tops, cover ups, even dresses. They take up virtually no space for packing.

Just jumping in here to say that I had the same experience! I've always had recurring nightmares about planes. I was in agonizing knots with fear about flying for an family emergency trip, but that video eased my mind so much I was able to fly from FL to IN (with layover in ATL) round trip -- four plane rides total -- and each one was easier than the one before. I just kept thinking about the info that planes are over-engineered for safety and turbulence is basically air speed bumps. Thank you SO much to you and your husband. I can't believe it, but I'm actually excited to fly again! Never, ever thought I'd say that.

One tip I heard that I find useful is to take out your kitchen scales while deciding what to pack and individually weigh items - its surprising how much heavier certain fabrics are than others. Things like lightweight blouses weigh far less than most t-shirts for example. That way you can often fit in more items

So agree with you on packing. Because I wear a ton of colors, I pack black bottoms and tend to go in summer to Europe so it works great. I don't wear my Florida flamingo shirts but at least purple, reds or some type of colors and everything goes together as you have said. Also, I wear earrings at my destinations so everything coordinates with those chosen colors. I like the idea of less and though I differ in your color choses I go with the same amount of clothes. Thanks so much for your helpful advice and hope you thrive!! Enjoy!

Something I've done for several trips - Alaska, Australia, Costa Rica & Portugal is pack 1 outfit that is NOT what you expect the weather to be! In Alaska we wore shorts in Anchorage for a bike ride around town. Also on another Alaska trip the weather was warmer than usual & others wore sweaters & were so miserable. We'd checked weather one day before departure, & made some changes. Going to a warm climate? ONE long sleeve/long pants outfit for the chilly air conditioning or weather change. Mother Nature has a perverse sense of humor!!

We are heading to Israel in Nov. like a couple of people here. I've been watching tons of your videos. I picked up your recommended Peeps eyeglass cleaners, which are great and the flat bendable phone stand. The stand is so handy for other items too. We are sharing one medium checked piece, and a carry on along with backpacks. My plan is to put our CPAP machines in the carry on luggage to avoid extra items to keep track of, so minimizing what we bring for clothing will be very important.

Again a great video - thank you very much - love your videos. ❤ I have now tested packing again with your advice of colour combinations. I just put out a thicker sweater and put in a light cardigan and so I got additional space for two more shirts. Together with your folding methods of another video, it worked out perfectly. Result of weight still the same, but more clothes 😊 packed: 7 kgs (15,5 lbs) carry-on (20" light carry-on suitcase) and 2 kgs (5 lbs) personal item (very light weight shoulder bag).
Here is a tip for bulky clothes as I already told in folding video: For my international flight to Seattle (carry-on and personal item - weight restriction total (12 kgs/26 lbs) I will take with me my beloved woolen cardigan (hand-knitted by my granny) - just putting it in a zip pillow cover. So, I have an additional pillow for flight, it does not count as personal item and fits easily between handles of my carry-on suitcase.

I just got some Rip Skirts to wear next time I travel instead of pants since they take up very little space. This opens up more room for other items and souvenirs for the trip home. I like the long black rip skirt because it goes with almost anything. They have some thin shorts you can wear under them since they are wrap skirts but I find unless it is super windy, they cover well. I always look for items that will do double duty so I can pack less. Less stuff = less things to worry about on a vacation. Less worries = more fun!

If I have a packing restraint on a trip, I will often pack an appropriate sized compression cube with a handle in my carry-on or personal bag that will accommodate anything I need to “wear on the plane“ just to get it on the plane. Then, when I get on the plane, I can put all of those items in the compression cube for safekeeping on the flight. When it’s time to get off the plane, I have a small loop that hooks to the handle of my carry-on or personal bag that I can then thread through the handle of the compression cube so that it doesn’t get lost as I go to my next flight or leave the airport. If I’m someplace where I’m going to need a coat, gloves, hat, etc. I can put all of those in the compression cube so that they’re easy to get out when get to get to my destination.

If I am packing for cold weather I wear 1 pair of pants and pack 2. Then I pack about 5 tops that can mix and match. I pack 2 pairs of shoes like a dressy pair and slides for the pool. I wear my gym shoes. I do pack 2 pairs of underwear per day. I do pack bulk on underwear. Lol. For warmer weather it's easier for me. What was challenging for me was packing for cold weather. I have packed a carry on and underseater and took that on trips. The carry on goes in the over head bin, , and the underseater goes under the seat. If I want the extra space to bring stuff back. Never had a problem with taking both the carry on and underseater on the plane. Thanks Laurie for all your tips. They have been very helpful.

Tip for wrinkled clothes: pack an empty cosmetic size spray bottle. At your destination, fill with water and gently spray wrinkled clothes. Most wrinkles will come out as the clothes dry. However, don't try this on delicate fabrics like silk as it may leave water spots.

I never wear everything I take, even after years of packing as minimally as possible. 😂 Minimal for me means wearing a couple of tops plus an oversized outer layer, and a pant or jean, and my heaviest shoe on plane. Then in my bag is just one more bottom and maybe a dress and sandal if it’ll be warm, pajamas, and one extra panty and socks. If I can do laundry at destination, I try not to take more than that because nobody will care if you wear same piece every other day, as long as it’s clean. 😂 Taking too much just robs you of space to bring back souvenirs. 😊 But it’s good to see all different styles of packing because some want to have different outfits every day, I guess.

Hi! So you cannot wear anything extra or have anything in your pockets while being screened. My tip is to designate a pocket before you arrive at the airport where you can quickly put your ID and phone/ticket. Then find an inner pocket to secure your wallet etc. After security, then you can get organized and pack those things in a final, more secure location.
