Oh my god...I knew it was coming...it was one of the moments I remembered. When this came out, I was living with my parents, recovering from a pretty bad car accident. Broken Femur and a few other things. Nothing life threatening, but...got a bone infection(which...I guess in retrospect was). In any event, had nothing to do for about 2 years but lay around and watch TV. My Dad doesn't really laugh much. He watches comedy shows and...I don't know why, but he just doesn't really laugh. He chuckles a bit, but he kinda holds back. But I remember when this one came on, it had him dying. Just laughing his ass off! Un-fucking-believable. Ehh...I don't actually know. They had me back in the Hospital for 5 days. The rod in my leg(which is supposed to be titanium, but clearly is NOT) broke and the bone stopped healing and started narrowing(so dying). I could tell as it was a year in and that's when you should be getting well along in your rehab...and I tried jogging and it was like I almost felt it break again. Went in to the Doctor, they originally said I had bone cancer. That turned out to be a false positive, but then they said it was a bone infection. This was a while back, so I don't THINK they said it was the bone marrow...but I don't know. I was so freaked out by the false positive for bone cancer. My Cousin who I grew up 2 miles away from me and who I spent 5 days a week going to wrestling practices and then Tournaments with had died from bone cancer...spread to his spine, then his brain. So after they said it wasn't cancer, I don't know if I paid attention close enough to all the details. By the way, this kid was 23, he was the #1 recruit in the Country, D1...and he quit school, started a business and solid it for over 10M by the time he'd passed away and was working on another. Died 6 weeks before his daughter was born. Went from 6'2 220 to 98 pounds. Horrific. So yeah, sorry, I don't think bone infection inherently means bone marrow, but I guess I didn't ask. They said it was serious, but caught it early and I needed to stay to get a course of...something, some steroid and antibiotics I assumed and then I was sent home and had to go back a few times a week for a couple weeks, then I was fine. Still had to wait another year for the leg to fully heal.

I am seeing a pattern in these comments where Karl says something stupid, Ricky and Steve laugh at him, then people claim that they were mocking him for saying something sensible. They don't laugh at him for saying that "technology makes us lazier," nor is that a profound point.
They are also playing devil's advocate with him to get more out of him. Karl has many good ideas but often doesn't articulate them well so they wind him up more.
Karl is actually right that a chip would make us "lazy." I would have worded it differently though. There's a study that shows that using GPS to get around reduces the size of a part of the brain that deals with spatial memory. A 2nd study showed that the same part of the brain is larger in taxi cab drivers. Karl is spot on...when we offload work to technology our brain reduces in the structures that usually do that work. Like muscles the brain is a "use it or lose it" structure, to an extent.
I know what you mean. I think the gist of his point is that you don't have to know anything about geography or road layout if you have a satnav. There's no effort or knowledge required to use one, you can just go where you want without thinking about it. Whereas lorry drivers 30 years ago would have had to make a concious effort to learn the network, since they can't be reading a giant paper map while driving. The satnav just tells you where to go. That of course extrapolates to other things.
There's another study that shows that heavy internet usage also reduces memory because it's quicker to just reference the internet (similar to how people today always says they don't know anybody's phone number since their phone has it saved). It might not actually be a bad thing though as it could conceivably leave the brain with more "energy" to perform other tasks.
It's very true... I went a couple of years without a phone because the one I had died and at the time I couldn't afford a replacement. Eventually I was glad to be without it. I found my attention span came back, my memory improved and my ability to recall information. I was a lot less stressed out, and the compulsion to check social media and to always be reachable faded away. I could still access the internet on my laptop at home, but there was no need to have access to it while I was out. For about a month I had no internet at all, due to a technical fault on the fibre optic cable to the house... At first that was really bad and felt very isolating. But after a couple of weeks I started to enjoy it. I started doing things I hadn't done for years, like reading books, watching movies, walking, coming up with ideas for projects, listening to albums etc, and being 100% focused on and invested in what I was doing. It's amazing how once you take away that easy distraction of social media and youtube, you find there is so much to do in the real world.
Gonna be so bummed out when you guys get to the end of these. HBO had SO much material to work with from the podcast its a shame they didnt do way more seasons of the animated version

It has been proven that we are more dopamine dependent, with lower attention spans, decreased sleep, reduced memory, with a sharp increase in social anxiety because of our constant interfacing with technology. If it were implanted into our heads and available 24/7 it could be catastrophic. I also think Steve is horribly naive to assume technology companies would not incorporate a form of advertising in relation to the implant - there would totally be dream advertisements if they could manage.

More like augmented or mixed reality. Virtual reality doesn't take the real world into account (other than perhaps make sure you don't bump into something). Augmented reality shows you the real world and pops artificial elements in there. Mixed reality mixes both AR and VR.

The glasses already exist - called augmented reality. Admittedly not as extensive in its scope as Karl has imagined, but not far off it either. One application is to walk around a city like London and see it how it looked like hundreds of years ago. They also used this so that people who couldn't afford to get into Wimbledon could "look through" the buildings and watch the tennis that way, in real time. Another idea is to decorate and place furniture into a house you're viewing. The house is empty but what you see is how you imagine it.

This is definitely true , we did this in history at uni , how our jaws have got smaller so our wisdom teeth no longer fit properly . In some countries they remove your wisdom teeth at a certain age , i think most countries you wait to see if they become a problem.
I used to listen to these podcasts on my 40 min walks to work in all weather conditions and I was always just howling. The fact that this doesn't have 40 seasons is a damn shame.
