Hey Guys, Marty it definitely needs a tune. I have a MY 15 (built Dec 14) 6 spd Gti that I have owned since new and it’s a daily driver. I got a Revo stage 1 tune and a Sachs clutch. Transforms the car. 184 kw on a hub dyno. Other mods include a wavetrac LSD, xForce cat back, Golf R rear lights. Plan to go stage 2 and a BBK eventually. The jump between my old MK5 and my recent 7.5 was absolutely remarkable. On an ‘08 2.0 FSI, with an IC, downpipe, full host of bolt-ons and full software (ECU/TCU) upgrade, I was still 30-40hp below what my new 7.5 GTI can achieve with a simple Stage 1 remap. Couldn’t love it more.
STOP IT! I don't need your "help" trying to justify to my wife how much better for the planet it would be if I "just" had a 300bhp GTi (with remapped DSG, 'cos it would be rude not to...)
@@thomascarruthers4397 Indeed, my particular model year had a warranty extension up to 100k miles on the mechatronic units in the DSGs. I was fortunate to avoid any such issues, other than the beginnings of some clutch slippage around the time I eventually parted with the car, but at that point there was 175k miles on the car (around 120k after tuning/upgrading). But, yes, the 5 was a blast, but the 7 is quite practically a whole new level of car.👍

As someone who doesn't care much for VW in general, the Mk7 and 7.5 are exceptionally good. If you can only have one car and it needs to be fun, you can't go wrong with a MK7 even if it's completely stock.
The Mk1 Golf only ever had 4 cylinder engines, even the GTI. First few years had a 1.6l with 110 hp, but it was later switched to a 1.8l with 112 hp, both taken from the Audi 80.
@@wowdogeful For sure. I meant swapped v6 or even the engine from the r32. The vr6, from what I've read, is not much heavier than the mk1 engines so it becomes a great car! It's a very common swap for the mk1.
Pretty much every other cartuber has you covered there. Euros don't get as much love, especially VW. So it's a nice & fresh breath of air when it does happen.
In South Africa that, in that condition it would've been sold for as a new second hand... The automotive industry is not really requalated people do cut cars in half and sell them to customers who don't even know that the car has crashed before. I really love the Australia and America when it comes to car market and second hand car market.
Gotta love a MK7, whether that be a base model, GTI, R, or variant aka Sportwagen, like I have. Not my first golf, but is my first awd wagon. The mods are absolutely endless. Grats on the great find :)
Loved this review it kind of brought home a lot of the reviews around the 8 especially how much distraction is caused in the air con drag race. I feel like the golf has always felt substantial and that's it's appeal. I think the 7.5 did it best and feels like the ultimate evolution whereas the 8 feels like they are changing the mold maybe making interiors that are expected in Hyundai's but lacks the usability golfs used to be synonymous for.
“When you remove the emotion from the argument and just look at the facts and figures objectively” I don’t think I have ever herd something sound more like the manufacture talking. emotion is why we are all car nuts in the first place. Emotion is what drives us to modify cars. To buy old cars that are objectively worse then there newer counterparts and fix them up and modify them.
Mk7 owner here. I've done a decent amount of mods on my car, spread out so I could really tell the difference (and for budgetary reasons). A set of sticky tires, and beefy rear sway bar, and a tune (with clutch if manual trans) TRANSFORM this car into a canyon slaying beast. For the price, it really can't be beat. The classy interior and respectable mpg's certainly help, too.
having had a mk7 GTI perf package as a daily for 7 years and 100k+ miles, i have to say well done. Buttons FTW. First thing I had to do is disable the soundaktor so it stopped sounding like a VR6.
@@dreamcrusher112 My neighbour has a 2017 Golf R and his DSG just shat itself completely, he was 6 months away from having to pay that out of pocket, luckily he is covered by warranty. @@henrik1743 So I'm a "guy in his 50s" with a Golf DSG, who has owned motorbikes, a heavily modified WRX, a 911 and other fun toys. Did bike track days and car track days - and stuffed the gearbox on the WRX twice (3rd gear both times). The DSG in my MK7 GTi has been golden so far - but just for 120k kms... (no track days though, to be fair...) I do hate the plastic sump on the engine, but DSG is incredible in terms of gear shift speed, paddle access and "auto" capability. No issues for me so far, but I am not on internet forums for Golfs so haven't heard the horror stories...
Get proper tires and you'll be fine. If I can tackle snow in my E85 fed IS38 swapped FWD egg. A much skimpier Stage 1 car should have even less issues. FWD does amazing in the snow. You need the tires for it though.
@@Peylix I had proper winter tires. There was no trouble getting around in the snow at all. It just wasn't fun to spin the tires all the time when it wasn't snowing, and objectively RWD and AWD are more fun in the snow.
There's been a lot of regulation changes between these two models. Things the 7 could do the 8 had to find new ways. We test drove the EV version of the 7 here in Germany. It was literally a ICE and tank delete replace with an electric motor and battery pack. The 8 has been designed to be EV ready. So you could argue the 7 is the peak of IC design. We actually ordered a golf 7 comby from the factory. The order was delayed due to the regulation changes that meant all the engines needed upgrading. We cancelled the order and bought a showroom Touran, which is also baced on the golf 7 platform. 180kph is the top speed before the 1.4L engine gives out to the buffeting drag over the bigger body. The front right shock absorber was blown from the first test drive. And the ACC can easily get bumped out of calibration. Costing 400 Euro to restore. The panorama roof leaks and still needs fixing. Other than that a great car.
The MK7 and the MK4 are honestly the two nicest "modern" golfs we have. Every other one just looked wrong in some way. The MK8 is massive and looks more like a Crossover, every time I see one on the street I think its closer to a Tiguan. The MK6 has a less than flattering rear, same with the MK5, they're still heaps nicer than the MK8, but not as good as the MK4 or MK7. And the big one (for me) The MK7 and 7.5 were the last golfs to be made as a 3 door. To me, a Golf is a 3 door. Its just their best form imo
Do yourself a favor and buy a model year ~2000 Passat or an A4 B5/B6. Passat 3bs have the space benefit of being based on the model year equivalent Audi A6 chassis, both come with a bullet proof 1.8T or 1.9TDIs, just bolt the facelift K04 on the 1.8T and 180kWs are yours without the added electric gremlin hustle. 1.9 TDIs make stupid comfortable long distance cruisers for families and their caravan with corresponding fuel economy thanks to variable turbos and will with some minor tweaks make 180kWs also maintainining emissions. Whilst still having cash to spare for a good holiday compared to one of these Golfs...🤷♂
Too bad you blokes don't get the best Golf R, which is the manual Mk8. Today I test drove both a DSG and a manual, and sure the DSG is quick, but it's so incredibly boring compared to the manual, no driver engagement or involvement or fun.
I love this, I'm an ex MK6 Golf R owner, had it for 10years, when i was looking to upgrade we wanted to go from 2 cars to one so we needed something that does it all we ordered a 2022 Audi SQ2, this has the new engine with 7spd S-Tronic (DSG) from the current S3 has the latest version of the Haldex but no torque vectoring and most of all has the interior from the previous gen S3 with proper buttons and the latest Sonas audio so everything works inside. Check one out if you get the chance, i'll be doing some simple mods to ours over time but worth a look.

8:25 lol poor Moog's face, the second Marty started listing things that could be done for 40k Moog was speechless. Marty getting the 7.5 just to fuck with Moog is priceless though, clearly the better value option even if the 8 is overall a better car (when the quirks are fixed?)
The mk7 gti the best daily I’ve ever bought. FBO a clutch and a tune, and decent rubber Car makes 450 to the wheels, and always puts a smile on my face. And the mk7 gti is cylinder head is better than the mk7R head… There is a reason Vw went back and put the gti cylinder head on the mk8 🤙🏼 cheers to the Vag content made my day.
Why not a Stinger or an N? A fiesta ST? A Skoda VRS wagon? Cmon boys - try something different!!!
as a white MK7.5 GTI owner i'm excited to see where this goes!
Ditto my dude.
So will all the Mk8 GTI owners and Skoda Octavia VRS MK4 owners as we got the same engine as the Mk7.5 in Australia with IS20 turbo.
The mk7.5 was my dream car in highschool, now my dad and I both own mk8s, so I'm really looking forward to content with both these cars!
The picture and comment doesn't go together lol... you were probably in high school before the mk1 was ever dreamed up.🤣🤣🤣
@@weseethetruth158 just started my 65th year of highschool! This is the year I graduate, I can tell already!
That highway patrol police car looks like it should be on a NASCAR track with numbers on the side!!
Have had major mechanical problems which afflicted the early mk7 but still love the gti. Looking forward to see how your Gti turns out
As the owner of a MY13 mk6 golf GTi, the ECU and DSG Remap is game changing. The gear shift is so fast.
@@QuarkGluonSpasma the jump must be unreal. The mk5 was prone to gear box issues from what I read…?
@@thomascarruthers4397 Indeed, my particular model year had a warranty extension up to 100k miles on the mechatronic units in the DSGs. I was fortunate to avoid any such issues, other than the beginnings of some clutch slippage around the time I eventually parted with the car, but at that point there was 175k miles on the car (around 120k after tuning/upgrading). But, yes, the 5 was a blast, but the 7 is quite practically a whole new level of car.👍
This is actually insane and i still don't want to believe it - mk8 is a huge step back.
love you guys, just dont care about shopping cars. cant wait for the next mighty MOD
Nice, you put our old Turbos and TÜV plate on:-) Greetings Björn
I'm really looking forward to this. Bought my 2018 GTI for 28k usd back in March 2019. It's insane seeing what the Mk8 prices are.
Highest prio (probably no brainer) is getting some lighter wheels. Those stock wheels are close to 30lbs each.
I love my Mk7 for so many reasons - buttons included. I’m actually genuinely concerned I won’t like the MK8 R I have on order because the MK7 has been so good.
I’m just an old lady. But I honestly love the 8. All accept the seats that no longer have an adjustable head brace. And the plaid in the 7 is cuter.
Really love those seats in the MK7, They give such a retro charm and look pretty nice in a white car.
A car from 5 years ago should not be retro 😂
@@MrSamu923 it's an old design revived in a new model, That literally makes it retro in this case.
OH MY DAYS 2x Golf’s - starting to look like my garage boys!
So excited to see what you guys do to the GTI! I’ve got one of my own and I was got so excited when I saw the corner of the front bumper in the thumbnail!
Love that the boys have Golf's now. As a bloke thats only ever had Golf's they are such good cars. I now own a MK.7.5 GTI TCR
Holy shit I’m so excited to see what you do to the GTI. I’m looking at doing a 7.5 GTI or GLI, haven’t decided yet. But I’m pumped to see this.
I have a White Silver Metallic MK7.5 GTI myself since 2019 it is just awesome, put some 19' OZ Wheels, KW Suspension and a Remus Catback exhaust on👍🏻
@@kai_291 That sounds awesome. I know there’s more cool things available for the GTI but with the 2019 and newer GLI’s actually finally getting the same engine it really makes me want to give it some love. They have the potential to be highway weapons without looking like a ticket magnet, and that’s kind of what I’m gonna be going for.
@@HypnoticMilotic we don't get the Jetta's here in Germany so if you like to go for it, I bet they are awesome aswell
GTI if you don't have kids. GLI if you do.
Subie till I die but recently I found myself looking at either a Toyota Chaser or a Nissan Stagea, I would love a double unicorn R34 front end like mechanical Stiggs
I didn't like golfs until I bought one, and I changed my mind about them. They are brilliant cars 🤯
imagine how you would feel about other european cars as the vw is the entry point, european cars are really good but expensive daily drivers
@@alec5443 not in europe. cheap. lol but rs3 m140i or the pug gt are just as good. but generally speakin our european cars suck compared to the japanese hatches.
Some ricer tried to race my 18 GTI through a set of 3 roundabouts. That’s the first time I ever pushed it hard through turns. Incredible handling. Embarrassing for anything else
Agree, ended up with a GTD as my new E350 AMGline PP black edition Touring (stupid long name) was delayed...... I cancelled the Merc kept the GTD 4 years!!!! After 5 years.... I'm back in a Mk7 Golf R. I'm in love ❤️❤️❤️
@@kdotroy1 seat Leon cupra all day long
14:58 cops roll past you both 🤣 Moog probably freaking out a bit seeing them in rear view mirror lol.
As someone who doesn't care much for VW in general, the Mk7 and 7.5 are exceptionally good. If you can only have one car and it needs to be fun, you can't go wrong with a MK7 even if it's completely stock.
After the GTI it would be interesting to see how far you could take a base Golf 1.4TSI.
The mk1 gti with vr6 is a gem. When Marty mentioned it at the beginning, I thought he bought one! :(
Mate same I really wanted him to have one sitting there
The Mk1 Golf only ever had 4 cylinder engines, even the GTI.
I'd love to see you guys do a gtr or a skyline or supra or something big jdm I miss those times
Nah, it's been done to death. I wanna see them rocking a suzuki swift

Love my Golf S. That 1.8 is pretty stout, looking forward to tuning it soon.
Love the premise of this guys! Modded newish car versus brand new unmodded. Keen to see the results.
Should’ve bought an edition 40😅 but yeah the 7.5 gti is a great choice. You guys should look into galano flex tunes for the gti
He could've got a manual with the performance pack then too! Ik someone with a manual 40th and it's an amazing car
@@tally5k339 that’s what I mean, would’ve been a great car for Marty haha. I’ve got one and it’s absolutely crazy

@@ad_fletch true, but 40k is still cheaper than 80-90k 😂
“When you remove the emotion from the argument and just look at the facts and figures objectively” I don’t think I have ever herd something sound more like the manufacture talking. emotion is why we are all car nuts in the first place. Emotion is what drives us to modify cars. To buy old cars that are objectively worse then there newer counterparts and fix them up and modify them.
Great episode, really enjoyed it. Would you guys ever consider modding a Hyundai i30N?
Great times the VW Golf hits on everything you need for a fun daily car.
Except reliability with the DSG box, horrible, horrible reliability issues and failure rates.
Especially on your wallet when it will break.... Constantly
@@henrik1743 not heard of this with the more modern boxes
@@dreamcrusher112 My neighbour has a 2017 Golf R and his DSG just shat itself completely, he was 6 months away from having to pay that out of pocket, luckily he is covered by warranty. He is the only owner of it since brand new, he is a guy in his 50's that loves cars and had multiple Alfas, bikes etc. So he is not just some dipshit 21 y/o that bought a cheap one with 12 owners that trashed it. Served by the book at the dealer etc..
In sweden here it went so far with the DSG trannies even on normal VW*s that a lot of taxi companies if buying VW refused to buy the DSG transmissions due to the insane failure rates.
Stage 1 APR Mk7 GTI was a blast. Not so much in the snow unfortunately.
When Moog roasted the P plater crackle boys. I have been waiting for this for a very long time, pure truth from the man
Recently bought a Mk 7.5 as well and adore it.
I can’t wait to see what mods you guys do to Marty’s.
How much did you pick it up for
Too many newer cars lately were are the nuggets
I absolutely love my GTI. So much fun and so much practicality, I can do ikea runs, be comfy and still fast. Doesn't get better.
From JDM wars to VAG wars 💀💀
I firmly believe that you guys make THE BEST youtube content of any genre. Hands down!
And the big one (for me)
The MK7 and 7.5 were the last golfs to be made as a 3 door. To me, a Golf is a 3 door. Its just their best form imo
😂 Man I remember when Marty used to hate the the GTI’s and R’s. Now look at him 😂
I suppose with age comes wisdom haha , I’m not there yet I still buy rust boxes
Moog has Rick rolled us again
Damn, now we all have to buy golfs 😂
I already have the little sister. And even though it is the Diesel Gate version, I still LOVE IT.
PS: They´re lower in insurance too, because accidents only happen to people with AK47 tunez...

So stoked for this series as I've actually just picked up a MK7.5 GTI (2021 White Silver Metallic SE 6MT w/Performance Pack) to have fun with on the track and within reason on the street!
As soon as Marty said manual seats and no touch screen nonsense, I was sold. I'd rather have the 7.5 vs the 8. And that's even if they were identically priced. Add on the savings for future mods and it's definitely better.
Oh shit Marty has the same car as me! Performance pack, upgraded headlights, white, four door, dual clutch, Clark plaid seats. Only difference is I have upgraded rims. Such a perfect car, all the power you can use, all the practicality you could want. I am vindicated!
