  • This time tents are NOT in the park but camped on the sidewalks or streets.
    The Downtown Eastside (DTES) is a neighbourhood in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. One of the city's oldest neighbourhoods, the DTES is the site of a complex set of social issues including disproportionately high levels of drug use, homelessness, poverty, crime, mental illness and sex work. It is also known for its strong community resilience, history of social activism, and artistic contributions.

    This is literally my front yard. I can't get OUT of my doorway, walk on the street as I CANNOT walk on the sidewalk. I was homeless for many years here, would NEVER have pitched a tent on Hastings. But it is the same bullshit as back then; the city, the Parks Board, and VFD(it was CP rail back in the day, (where we used to be), all passing the buck, and getting nothing done. So now-fast forward 10 years, it is on HASTINGS. bUT THESE KIDS ARE lazy. And violent. AND FIFTY PERCENT OF THEM ARE NOT HOMELESS, BUT EXPLPOITING THE SITUATION FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE. tHAT'S MY RANT.

    It really is everywhere huh? I remember my ex girlfriend moving to Canada and telling me how clean and safe it was. I strongly believe the root cause of this homelessness crisis are hard drugs. Yes rising housing costs play a significant role as well. Now if you get addicted to hard drugs you're on the streets. I remember back in the day even drug addicts could usually find a cheap shady apartment somewhere. Not sure about the rules in Vancouver BC Canada, but in Portland Oregon in the USA you have to make 3 times the rent of an apartment *after* taxes to legally be allowed to move in and studios now start around $1,500 per month. When I moved into a studio apartment in Portland in 2021 it was $1,250 per month and that was one of the best deals in the city... now that very same complex 1 year later, the same unit is $1,450 per month. There are a *lot* of jobs that don't pay 3 times that or $4,500 per month after taxes like blue collar work, retail workers, restaurant workers etc. Investors/private equity firms have made the housing situation pretty bad. In my opinion if you work 40 hours per week in the USA even if you're working at McDonald's or Walmart or something you should be able to afford a studio apartment. Right now in Portland Oregon you have to make $54,000 per year *after* taxes or something like $80,000 per year before taxes just to afford an apartment. I read a survey that showed people who make 100k per year in the city are barely scraping by. It's getting out of hand with real estate and rental prices... all so some investors (many foreign) and private equity firms can squeeze as much profit out of us as possible.

    • @ExploreVancouverCanada
      @ExploreVancouverCanada  2 года назад

      We're neighbour....different rules and policies but ended up the same SHIT....nowadays we face inflation in grocery, gas and rental. These 1 2 3 essentials drive all of us (middle class) going crazy and nothing we could do about them. Sitting at home to save gas, eating less to save the grocery, and turn off all electronics to save the hydro bill, but I could not do any. Home rental in Vancouver may be a bit more expensive than Portland. I don't know much about this because I don't pay rent. Keep working as a bee to avoid ending on the street.

      @@ronwatts5827 Yea let me rephrase that. A lot of the people you just see on the street at daytime don’t face chronic homelessness they’ll be living in SRO’s or live elsewhere and just come down to Hastings to be with the bustle. Majority of the tents are people who are homeless except the ones in the Merch tents closer to Carol. I believe everyone has the right to housing and I agree with you in that mental health/ Addiction are the most prominent factors hurting DTES. A place like riverview or with the new St. Paul’s they might do sanction housing in the hospital is needed with support staff, addiction counsellors, therapists etc.

If not for a once in a lifetime health crisis, i.e. Covid-19, that park and the disease, crime, fires, assaults would be tripled by now. This is a national crisis...aided by actions by Vancouver city hall and Victoria. A survey taken by the city 4 years ago determined that nearly 80% of the "homeless" (most addicted or severely mentally ill) were from outside BC. If we believe these folks called "advocates", that the answer is housing...we are being conned: show me an addict who has recovered from the addiction because he/she had a roof over their head (silly talk). Or the same for those suffering from schizophrenia.....how does housing address schizophrenia...These people need intense intervention and treatment....not a place to lie their head down. (i wish it were that easy...no don't be conned, it is a serious problem, that takes serious action to address)

Drugs, Homelessness, class and race segregation with out right abuse. There's a large portion of people that are completely ignorant (by choice) to the insane problems in front of them and they help perpetuate. The ones that help have their hands tied politically over and over and over. The way everything is set up by the govt is to divide and control. I think if they are relocated it will bring new buisnesses into that street and help growth people want to work and not be afraid to go to work. This is a problem in a lot of countries but you can't expect the government to be blamed everytime a person can't get thier life on track after years provinces can't afford to pay for everyone and everything your responsibility is to make what the province offers you work. Other countries would never tolerate a person that paid for a buisness not being abe to open it.

    Before 2016 when fentanyl and meth took over. All the drug addicts stopped waving and slumping around cause they stopped selling heroin and cocaine. Those two drugs made them do this kind of dance. People called it the Hastings Shuffle. Now you don't see one person doing it. Doing the Hastings Shuffle could get you into trouble cause addicts with no money it would trigger them. Go down there and see if you can find cocaine.

    4:47 It's ugly but it holds a gem that some elderly are aware of. Around 11am there's a corner where all the thieves bring there stolen meat. You can buy high quality beef for half price. Me and my dad bought 400 worth of prime rib steaks for 200 $$$. Lot's stuff my dad brought back that amazed me. I come to protect my dad not from the homeless there but the other people looking to buy meat cause fights break out. It's who's got the cash first.

    It sad to see but unexceptable, business and citizens need to stop paying taxes that affect there business until the city takes down these tents. Vancouver is one of Canada most popular cities this is totally unexceptable .The city should never have let this situation get this far out of control. It a embarrassment not only to citizens of Vancouver but Canada. The sidewalks are for all public citizens not just these people who believe its there home. It only allows promote crime for citizens in the city. 1 week notice is enough after that all belongs confiscated and destroyed for health reasons. Wake up politicians of Vancouver do your job.
