    Interesting! I went to a high school that was majority white. Myself and two of my friends started a step squad. It was huge. They hadn't ever seen it before. Other high schools (city and suburban) started creating their own squads. Soon we were having competitions. It brought heightened awareness, recognition and funds, not only to the school, but the teams and local agencies, via fundraisers. It brought SO many people together, that likely wouldn't have met or interacted otherwise. We were getting contacted by schools in towns I didn't know existed in my state, in the beginning. 😄 I'm glad this was before social media and we didn't receive any of this backlash. One of the best things I've ever been a part of.

    Where one goes to college is not a measure of blackness. Also, USC is actually very diverse in terms of race and ethnicity. There are more asian, latino and black students combined than the number of white students. There are also a significant number of international students across all races.
    I'm with Syleena, these young women can be black and embrace their culture ANYWHERE that they choose to. What Ms Fox fail to realize is that most HBCUS are private schools vs Public Schools. A Black Student will get STATE money for Pell Grants and Scholarships at a PWI for being State Run School. Then many Black school don't have to room and space to accommodate the flood of black students that apply to them. I live in Greensboro, North Carolina, home of North Carolina A&T State University. They are approaching 14,000 students. They have a severe case of not having enough room for these students. Thousands of other kids are turned away every year because they don't have enough scholarships for those students or room for those students. So many had to end up going to UNC Greensboro or Elon College or Guilford College. Or N.C. State, they get more scholarship money from State than A&T. I've had many friends that couldn't get scholarship money and go to go to A&T. So it's not that easy in some cases and kids have to go with another option. And being at these kids are on the west coast. Their isn't any HBCU past Texas or Ohio. Maybe sometimes those students want to stay closer to home if they from California. It's not always cut and dry.

    As a graduate from an HBCU for Undergrad and a PWI for graduate school as well as a member of the Divine 9- I just don't see the issue. I don't think PWI's are stealing black culture if a group of black women created a group on their campus that didn't exist for them. I liken it to Divine 9 Chapters that were started on PWI campuses (3 of which originated at PWIs and the other 6 at HBCUs). Their creation of their dance squad is not going to take away from the Legacy that was already built at HBCUs.

So, here is the protocol. After the drum majors, you have the majorettes or the baton twirlers (if the high school or college has them), the dance team, which is what people are referring to as majorettes, and the color guard consisting of rifle and flag twirlers. The dance teams are not truly considered majorettes in the true sense of the word unless it has changed over the years. They are just dancers..period. They don't twirl or spin anything. I wanted to go to an HBCU, but at the time my major wasn’t offered and I didn’t have a car to drive to class sooo… I went to the PWI that was 5 minutes walking distance to my parent’s house. The professors were great and both my major and minor was being offered. I considered pledging my freshman year, but with it being a PWI the Devine 9 was non existent, but the school was partnered with the local DST Chapter and I would be able to pledge that way. There are multiple factors on why some black students don’t go to HBCU’s. Also, a lot of them have bad reputations (ie known for being party schools) or they don’t have their accreditation. Let’s stop shaming black students for going to PWIs.

    • @ZebraLens
      @ZebraLens Год назад +1

      Your statement is very one sided and you can't generalize HBCUs for being party schools. I have attended both, HBCU and PWI. I could easily say Auburn is way more of a party school than Tuskegee TU, or Alabama State ASU (for example) but your statement serves no purpose. Let's not use the "bad reputation" as an excuse to make HBCUs look less reputable than PWIs. You can only speak from your perspective and cannot say (some black students don't go to HBCUs because they are party schools) they can speak on their own experience. If you only went to a PWI that is totally fine, but to put HBCUs in a negative light (because of what you assume other people think) isn't a very well thought out statement.
      It totally fine to go to either HBCU or PWI, every school has their strengths and weaknesses. We even have the Black Ivy League schools (look them up if you don't know)
      We have to remember that while times have changed (somewhat) we weren't allowed to attend PWIs at one point in time, so we created our own colleges. Things have definitely gotten better though. PWIs (to this day) still have to meet diversity quotas in order to receive certain extra funding and tax credits.
      At the end of the day, I love both and would *NEVER* knock one over the other by saying _"some HBCUs are party schools therefore they have a bad reputation"_ you can find a party atmoshpere anywhere at any school if you are looking for it. People go to college for an education, and people will go to the best option (whether it's financial reason, distance, a particular degree program.) So let's not knock any school when it comes to higher education, especially for HBCUs when they were created out of necessity. ❤️☺️

Did Majorette’s start at HBCU’s? Maybe this need’s to be researched, before we start claiming ..I do know it’s still very big at different carnivals all over the world even in European culture …. We stay correcting White folks for stealing & appropriating our ish, but are claiming this culture without research , because of my personal knowledge, and simple Google , and I’m seeing German, Swiss, etc back in the 1800’s were very big on majorettes. 👀

We all borrow from each other. As long as the original source is given the credit for the idea, I see no problem with it. However, I have to disagree with the idea that our HBCUs actually created the concept of majorettes. Majorettes actually started with marching bands and carnivals back in the 1930s. Look it up. HBCUs may have added some additional Flair and culture to the concept, but they didn't create it. I understand what Syleena is saying but I also understand Vivica’s side as well, the young woman has a right to start the team the issue could occur is that once she is gone/graduated, who will take the reigns not every black girl that will go to that pwc will won’t to be a majorette, what could possibly happen is someone that is not black heading this team and becoming a real life bring it on situation, where they are showcases that team on social media like it’s something they came up with and going viral when young black women started this it happens all the time others taking credit for what black women created

    1) Most of the top football and basketball players at USC are black, so why not have black majorettes helping to support and cheer them on ?
    2) Most college students are not kids, they’re adults who are treated like kids.
    3) Regarding “Cultural Appropriation”, all of the ladies in this video are wearing “Real Asian Hair” on their heads with White woman hair styles. If that’s not cultural appropriation, I don’t know what is.
