  • Around the middle of the 17th century with the advent of the scientific method, a period of great change begins, called the scientific revolution. Many great scientists, with their theories and ideas, change our perception of the universe: Galileo Galilei, Copernicus, Kepler, Bacon and, above all, Sir Isaac Newton.
    In Newton, players take the role of a young scientist who wants to become one of the great geniuses of this period. To do this, they travel around Europe, visit universities and cities, study to discover new theories, build new tools, and work to earn money.
    The previous games on the designers list aren't my favourites to date, but maybe Newton can surprise me?

      He he, sorry but the unbalanced powers , lack of theme and ease of doing contracts vs travel, just didn't resonate with me.

    Students can't go backwards, because those are not actual movement of students on a map, but study choices and specialization along your studies : 1st year, 2nd year, etc. You cannot unlearn what you have learnt, you cannot go back in time. So thematically, it makes sense.

    As a PhD student that switched disciplines somewhere along the lines from physical sciences to humanities, I do kind of feel like, once you get started in one direction, it is very hard to "go back." I so the student track as academic careers, and once you started down one, forever will it dominate your destiny.

    Haven’t got this and don’t think I will. I like a good theme in a game. Thanks for reviewing it.

    Describing Lorenzo your words "how useless the yellow cards were" should be changed into "how I couldn't learn to play with yellow cards". Yellow cards are difficult to play, but I played a few times, when using "yellows" won the game. Did you play with the character cards? It changes a bit the game, but the expansion "Houses of the Renaissance" makes it great!

    • @TheBrokenMeeple

      Not a good sign if the game isn't balanced to have all 4 colours equally playable though. It's so much easier to win with green/blue. It's the GWT cow situation again.
      Tried characters yes but no desire to play the expansion. It's just too dry and restrictive for me.

      @@TheBrokenMeeplei don’t think you know lorenzo very well Broken. Yellow cards are really good. Sure some green cards are needed, but i always get yellows more than greens and win a lot.

    What do you think about the next upcoming game "Barrage" from this designer? Hugely one of the most anticipate eurogames for me in 2019, and for a lot of people too considering the numbers made during the kickstarter campaign.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  5 лет назад

      Haven't even heard of it actually, I rarely pay notice to Kickstarter as it's all just hype and no actual reason to love something. I don't love this designer either so I'm not exactly hunting down his games.

    I found at four players there was heated competition for the round tokens and the cards as they aren’t refreshed until the round end.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple

      It does, but that's just indirect interaction, luckily this game doesn't bog down even at 4.

    I don't know why people say this is not thematic. There are definitively other less thematic games. I'm thinking it's lack of imagination? You say that it's not like you're visiting universities etc, just moving on different tracks, yet you are moving your pawn on a map to cities and universities. And you can't study different things until you've visited certain places to learn things, meet people or aquire books. A combination of studies lead to publishing new theories. The tracks, work track and students track, are also well suited with the theme even though there is a hazy connection between teaching students and getting bonuses, but I would newer want a game skipping a tech-tree just because it's not exactly thematic. On the whole I think Newton is pretty thematic and I ask you skeptics: Really, what would it take for a game with this kind of theme (I'm not talking about switching to a popular, and in my mind probably boring, theme) to be thematic to you?

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  5 лет назад

      Students can't go backwards.....When a theme is one that could be easily replaced without much change too the game it brings up the question. The card mechanic is great and fun but let's face it, it's purely a mechanic. The use of "tracks" everywhere as well. Lorenzo was similarly lacking in the theme department but at least I enjoy Newton.

    • @JacobLikesMusic
      @JacobLikesMusic 5 лет назад

      Students are not walking on a map, they are learning, so going back would represent unlearning? Highly thematic! :)
      A tech tree or track is seldom gonna be thematic, but without some added mechanics games are gonna be really simple, which is fine for a gateway game. The cards are just the core game, it's the actions you take. It could have been worker placement, drafting, programming, action selection, etc I don't think any of it is more thematic. But what you do/accomplish in this game I think is pretty thematic, not like the most thematic but on par with Viticulture and Terraforming mars which people generally think are thematic. More thematic games are in my mind Snow tails, Castles of mad King Ludwig and K2.

      As a sidenote you can re-theme most games. Pandemic has the same game with at least 4 different themes. I don't think most ameritrash games would be that challenging to retheme either.

    I know it is possible for a euro to have a great theme , but they are few and far between. I'm a euro fan as is my game group. I think it would be safe to say that as for me and my game group we would much rather have a great euro game with a superficial-even boring theme than a good euro game with a great theme. Haha I can read a book/watch a movie if I want theme!

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  5 лет назад

      It is hard for them but then many can manage like a lot on my recent lists like worker placements for example. Euros are a dime a dozen and simply making "generic Euro" isn't enough any more.

  • @windyhillbomber
    @windyhillbomber 5 лет назад +2

    Again, questioning lack of theme with a strategic Euros! It’s like insisting Ameritrash games suffer because they are too heavily themed. Horses for courses buddy.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple

      Heavy theme tied well to mechanics will always be a plus point. Just look at most of Mindclash lineup or anything by Vital Lacerda.

    • @windyhillbomber
      @windyhillbomber 5 лет назад

      I have and love all of Lacerda’s games and yes, he does try to embed theme into different game mechanics. But, they are not my personal favourite Euros and tend to scratch a very different itch to say a Rosenburg game or other classic Euros. My point again for you to comment every time that a certain Euro lacks theme is like saying a certain Ameritrash game has too much.
      As always thanks for your excellent reviews and discussions and I greatly appreciate the effort you make to deliver this content.

      Euro games are, at their heart, a puzzle, not a simulation. That said, there is no reason that puzzle can't be strongly tied to a setting. There are a host of Euro games that manage to be a great puzzle and make sense with the setting.

    Didn't like this game, after just a few plays it gets repetitive and boring to dead.
