So I'm the guy that started the Pelican Parts Mulholland thread. I want to thank you for this video. It's really hard to explain what an impact the thread, Mulholland Dr, and Banning have had on my life and my car builds. Chris is an extremely nice and interesting guy, and it's been an honor to call him a friend for so many years now. And yes, I've ridden in "The RSR" a few times. It's a beast.
@themoscowcoupattempt hello my names Evan I've studied your post for the past 3-4 years with extensive screenshots and last week saw the car at The Petersen. If you could I would like to contact you and talk to you both. I'm an ex Porsche Apprentice Technician going to school currently for automotive training. Here is my take on a 911 drift build, my personal RUclips Channel is FourLugFilmz, here is Chris Bannings 911 suspension specs based on his own take and from photos he's shared on the thread mixed with my own tuning. I'm very passionate about his story and car and want to keep it alive in my own way. I share the same connection. Thank you for your time. ruclips.net/video/VuHC89vrBRY/видео.htmlsi=ftk08Xo1QeuPCsgk (UPDATE - I posted the wrong video, this is Chris Bannings RSR Inspired Build) ruclips.net/video/-LQzU_GJvhg/видео.htmlsi=wLtrnktVS62fhOPB

I used to race Mulholland back in the early 70's in my dad's 66 dodge dart slant 6., at least one hub cap would always pop off. Happy to have survived the stupidity of being an invincible teenager .
That’s so cool of Chris to talk to you directly on the phone about all the stories of mulholland. I had thought during the entire video that thevoice clips were from some kind of old interview you found. I love the “uh oh!” he would make when describing the stories lmao
5:52 I had a past friend say that he also became a better driver when he was under the influence. He also totaled four cars by the end of high school...
Street racing on Mulholland mostly ended in the 80's after they started paving in the view spots and banning parking at night. In the early 80's my friends and I raced our RD350's and 400's up there as well as our cars. A lot of friends had Datsun 510's and Rotary Mazda trucks or Capri's. There was a spot known as "Grandstands" between Coldwater and Laurel Canyon where I did witness a friend die after he struck a truck that was pulling out of the parking area. People from Hollywood mostly went up their in lower budget cars and the people from The Valley usually had the nicer cars. It was actually better to race at night because you could see headlights coming around the corners and knew when you could or couldn't use the entire road. I'm sure the residents up there hated us back then. Now there are tons more potholes than turns so all you want to do now is cruise and not go too fast. P.S. I wonder if Chuck they mention here is the same Chuck that I raced a few times. He had a green early '70's Javelin and I had a white '68 Caprice with wide wheels but, otherwise stock.
I've been fortunate to see Chris's beastly Porsche - as it currently resides at The Petersen Museum in LA, its incredible. Love that you did this story.
I was just there a few weeks back and I don't remember seeing it at all... I was down in the vault and don't remember it. I wonder if they had it in the back room waiting to bring it back out or something...
I used to go up there with my Capri around 1978. Also for those not familiar with the area, this video might be a little confusing. You see there is a Mulholland Drive and a Mulholland Highway. Both are fun roads, but the main focus of events talked about in this video were on Mulholland DRIVE. And more specifically between Beverly Glen and Laurel Canyon.
I also drove my 1973 Capri up there in the early 70's. 21 of us got arrested one night & one was a girl, Donnie Jones flipped a coin to see who he was going to bail out of jail....I won. It was all thrown out of court though.
Absolutely love these kinds of Folk Legends. Every area of the world with car communities has local “legends” and “ghost cars” which come out on occasion to dominate and then disappear. Great video!
I first learned about the Mulholland racing scene through stories my dad would tell of his trips to Mulholland Drive. Back in the mid 80’s He would make the drive from San Francisco to LA in his ‘79 Firebird Formula to race, getting inspired by the King of the Mountain movie. The story I remember the most was of him forming a sort of rivalry with a guy in a 356 speedster (very similar to the opening race of King Of The Mountain). The two of them raced a total of 3 times with the speedster winning each time. My dad doesn’t remember much else from that time, or specifics of the speedster, other than the owner being a really nice and chill guy. Since he got into the scene a bit later on after it’s Heyday, and also because he wasn’t an LA local, he unfortunately wasn’t able to witness either Chris or Charlie. But still, his stories inspired me to learn more about the story of Mulholland. Thank you for telling its story!
I am born and raised in Arizona, my father grew up in LA and would tell me stories about Mulholland Dr. Every time I go to LA, I make it a point to take a spin through Mulholland Dr. It definitely begs you to start hitting the corners, but I just cruise it and think about all the racing that has gone on there, and think about my father rippen through there on his motorcycle. Great video.
You should do a video on the Stockholm open street race in Sweden. 1320 video went and filmed it and it’s one of the most wild street races I’ve ever seen.
Can you make a video about bossozoku culture. And how the group 5 racing inspired their car build. The rise and fall of the culture too. Anyways, cool video as always
I've driven Mullhulland a few times many years ago. I also really liked King of the Mountain but had no idea it was based on real people. Thanks for sharing!
Driving these roads has always been one of my favorite things to do in life. Theres nothing like a twisty road that follows the natural terrain. I find it both calming and exciting. I once built a 93 EG Civic hatchback to be the "ultimate backroad" machine - but ended up making it a little too extreme and was very difficult to drive on the street. That car only wanted to go fast. But it was a learning experience and I really enjoyed building or upgrading every aspect of a car. So it was all worth it.
Civic and fast LOL. 2 words that never will go together. You can blah blah about handling all you like, they dont go, they dont turn, they are a commuter car for thrifty people
@borismcfinnigan3430 In the context of this video, any car can be faster over another regardless of the badge, make or model. The canyons don't care about your opinion.
I found about the Mulholland almost one year ago while trying to figure out what was the Banzai Runners(especially the V8 mid engine 930), but I didn't got any relevant information, thanks so much for making this amazing video as you always do, you're a legend man
What a fantastic historical documentary! I love to have a spirited drive on Mulholland, once I was going at a pretty good clip and saw in my rear view an M2 going at twice my speed coming up fast, and fully drifting every corner. Absolute monster driver. I pulled over to let him pass and as he hit the next turn in front of me he was completely sideways, rear tires in the dirt. And I'm no slouch, but not trying to die lol.
There is a strange 911 I saw for sale recently with a chopped roof that I found very odd. I realize now it must have been inspired by the Mulholland RSR. It was in pretty rough shape, glad to see the original is still kicking. Awesome content as always.
My extensively modified Datsun 350Z (Scarab) - powered by a Traco 355 cu in 488 HP LT-1 can be seen at :30 sec. At that 'particular' point in time the car was virtually unbeatable on the hill. I stumbled across King of the mountain the other day on RUclips and watched it. Not great but the car culture it captured was pretty cool. Now learning how it came to be makes it worth watching. Awesome stuff in this video!

I even strapped a kc headlight to a CRG 125 shifterkart and ran it through live oak canyon at night lol. Beats the crap out of going to the track and out of my 20yrs of street racing and 10yrs of canyon racing not one innocent person got hurt.
Having gone to the Tail of the Dragon this summer, this makes my heart sing. Driving roads are one of the last great treasures for us old school 3 pedal punchers. Thank you for this awesome look at what driving enthusiasm drives us to strive for.
@@01Z06guy People who call themselves "driving enthusiasts" are posers. Never heard anyone at the track who was any good refer to themselves as an enthusiast.
@@01Z06guy Not everyone has the money to go to a racetrack, plus there's so few racetracks that you'd be travelling hundreds of miles between them, in this economy, with the gas prices in this state? Are you crazy? 🤣
@@cookowa3256 If you can afford to build any sort of car, you can afford to go to the racetrack. If you are unwilling to drive a couple hundred miles, then you aren't really an enthusiat in the first place. You are a casual or a poser, just as I said before.
Dam I have all these screen shots of forum talks about this topic. As a socal canyon enthusiast I appreciate you putting this together. Best racing lore
I remember that thread. I commented on the shaving of the rain gutters if you didn’t notice. Someone remembered the car and contacted him. Convinced him to restore it. People from around the world contributed. Excellent thread. Great story. Miss my 76’ Carrara slick top with a 81 3.0 and 89’ intake and headers. Basic but really quick. Great to find this, forgot all about it. Cheers!
Used to do the muholland run from the 101 to the 405 every other night like at 3am so much fun now i do it on my motorcycle here and there. Had a couple run ins with the fuzz but they never caught up😂
Dave at TRE is one of the coolest mentors I ever had. All of what you hear in this video is very much some of what I heard from the TRE crew and just the tip of the iceberg - seriously awesome work!
Mulholland is one of my favorite places to drive. I love going in the morning with the POC/PCLA and hearing the screaming Porsches in the hills. To this day we don’t let the tradition die.
i've seen the rsr recently at the Petersen automotive museum, I will just say, what a beauty, considering the fact that Mr Banning had done major rework that influenced the chassis rigidity and overall car handling just for canyon racing, that is something people can not replicate today. Also learning German part is funny, because I know people who learned Japanese just so they can modify their NSX
Thanks for a awesome video I saw King of the mountain many years ago when it came out, but I never knew it was based on a true story! Thanks man, thoroughly enjoyed the video!!!!
i still have a decent copy .of king of king mountain. my brother and i, both car lovers, still enjoy that old classic even all this time later..the movie captures the time period and passion of driving..and harry hamlin was The Man...perfect in the role...the movie has that Certain Something that still hits the right chords, even today.
You can still run your headlights if you install a switch to cut off all rear lights. That's how we did it back in Arkansas growing up. When you get on a dirt or gravel road they ain't got a chance lol
That Porsche is so damn beautiful. Always loved these cars but there's something about that chopped roof that makes it look so sleek. Reminds me of the various outlaw 356s with chopped roofs.
In the mid 70s, I used to run Mulholland Drive with my slammed small block 65 Chevy Nova. If you parked in “the pit” you could watch much of the road between Laurel and Coldwater Cyn. At that time, Charlie was a well known figure. We had a club known as the Cladstaien Racing Association. As I got older, we moved from the Drive to Mulholland Highway, which ran from the Valley to PCH. Start at the Rock Store & Pit stop at Neptune’s Net on PCH. Rinse and repeat. Only do motorcycles now.
Great production, thanks. I wasn't aware that Crazy Charlie was a real person and that the movie King of the Mountain was based on real life. Cal has always been one of my favorite movie characters, and now that I know he's real, I like him even more.
It still very much so exists around the Santa Monica mountains to this day, you can't take a drive around Highway 1 without seeing a Porsche, Ferrari or some sports car at some point, and a lot of those people will take on the mountains, and it's not just them, Decker Canyon Road is a road that's sorta developing a scene as well as Stunt Canyon, one guy runs around Decker Canyon with a Saturn Ion at insane speeds for a FWD car
@@cookowa3256 Lol don't underestimate the Ion Redline since it's a cheaper Cobalt SS due to the plastic body and Saturn badging. General Motors really outdid everybody with all those sleepers they were making in the 90s and 2000s.
@@JorgeChavez-du5vm I drive a FWD car too, they can be great on passes, just kinda funny how there's that guy whipping ass on a Ion at breakneck speeds out there
Awesome stories, great Documentary, Awesome Historical Automotive Heritage. Hopefully, you are able to take that Drive in that Special Porsche 🏎🏎👨🏻👍🏻🏁🏁🚩🚩
We used to drag race back in the 70's on Instustrial Ave in downtown of Vancouver Canada. Muscle cars, beer, and gas was cheap. Both sides of the Ave lined with drunk teenagers - and drunk teenagers driving muscle cars going past them at 60 mph sideways. A miracle nobody ever got killed or injured
I was fascinated by this episode as a kid, had it on tape and must of watched it 100 times. Devil Dan Danko was the former king of the mountain who helps Hooker hot up his cop car so he can catch a criminal who races on the mountain. Yes, a legendary episode of a legendary show 👍
Porsche now: "uhhh we actually wont sell you a car until you buy a pair of our shoes and a watch, and own 3 used cars first" Porsche then: "yeah we gave our sensitive racing documentation to a street racer so he could beat up on tourists LMAO"

I bought my first car a 65 fastback in 81 and watched King of the Mountain not long after. I’d grown up on motorcycles since 7 and speed was my obsession . I lived near some unpopulated awesome long and winding roads. I went thru a lot of tires. But I always wondered what happened to this movie. Hard to find now I know the real story! Thanks for doing this video. I can’t wait for the update!

Beats the crap out of going to the track and out of my 20yrs of street racing and 10yrs of canyon racing not one innocent person got hurt.
its a good day when hunter's moon uploads a video
Having gone to the Tail of the Dragon this summer, this makes my heart sing. Driving roads are one of the last great treasures for us old school 3 pedal punchers. Thank you for this awesome look at what driving enthusiasm drives us to strive for.
Have you ever heard of a race track? That's where you can find REAL driving enthusiasts. Tail of the Dragon is for casuals and posers.
@@01Z06guy sounds like gatekeeping lmao
This vid brings back so many great memories I had up there on Mulholland Dr.
Great watch! Love these kind of underground Motorsports stories!
Dam I have all these screen shots of forum talks about this topic. As a socal canyon enthusiast I appreciate you putting this together. Best racing lore
Used to drive that stretch almost every day. Thousand Oaks Suzuki couldn't figure out why I ground off the exhaust shields on my GS so quickly... LOL.
Cheers!
We've heard the stories of track legends. Now, lets hear about the street gods. Thank you so much for this vid bro!
Another great piece of history. Amazing how liberty and creativity leads to.
Definitely glad to see this one pop up. It is a very cool car and also time/place in car history.
Mulholland is one of my favorite places to drive. I love going in the morning with the POC/PCLA and hearing the screaming Porsches in the hills. To this day we don’t let the tradition die.
Sits down for lunch and sees there is a new upload from Hunter's Moon, yeah its a good day.
I live close by and enjoy a nighttime rip on the exact route, an amazing road.
i've seen the rsr recently at the Petersen automotive museum, I will just say, what a beauty, considering the fact that Mr Banning had done major rework that influenced the chassis rigidity and overall car handling just for canyon racing, that is something people can not replicate today. Also learning German part is funny, because I know people who learned Japanese just so they can modify their NSX
My favorite channel 🙌
10:17 Carlsbad sweet. The internet makes things too easy. The old days you had to find it and then figure it all out. Hence dead man’s curve lol. 😮😂
In Jacksonville all we have for curves is on ramps its all about highway power, I love roads like that
Thanks for a awesome video I saw King of the mountain many years ago when it came out, but I never knew it was based on a true story! Thanks man, thoroughly enjoyed the video!!!!
He’s back!!
I’m currently studying mechanical engineering and this video is very inspiring to me. Love your videos!
Amazing video as always, plese keep doing what you're doing❤ Greetings from italy🇮🇹
i still have a decent copy .of king of king mountain. my brother and i, both car lovers, still enjoy that old classic even all this time later..the movie captures the time period and passion of driving..and harry hamlin was The Man...perfect in the role...the movie has that Certain Something that still hits the right chords, even today.
Thank you for the historical story of this road. I remember growing up hearing the stories but, just echoes with different outcomes.
Finishing my beer and heading home to watch!!!! Already liked!!
It's crazy to think that the U.S. had a mountain pass racing scene like Japan's togue scene
US racing in general is vastly overlooked outside of this region apart from NHRA, Nascar, and IndyCar but it's where it all started.
@@cookowa3256 Lol don't underestimate the Ion Redline since it's a cheaper Cobalt SS due to the plastic body and Saturn badging. General Motors really outdid everybody with all those sleepers they were making in the 90s and 2000s.
@@cookowa3256the red Saturn 😫
@@JorgeChavez-du5vm I drive a FWD car too, they can be great on passes, just kinda funny how there's that guy whipping ass on a Ion at breakneck speeds out there
Awesome stories, great Documentary, Awesome Historical Automotive Heritage. Hopefully, you are able to take that Drive in that Special Porsche 🏎🏎👨🏻👍🏻🏁🏁🚩🚩
Such a great video man! Keep it up!
A miracle nobody ever got killed or injured
thank you for the video 🖤
This legendary mountain illegal race was also featured in the legendary tv show T.J. Hooker !
I was fascinated by this episode as a kid, had it on tape and must of watched it 100 times. Devil Dan Danko was the former king of the mountain who helps Hooker hot up his cop car so he can catch a criminal who races on the mountain. Yes, a legendary episode of a legendary show 👍
This is your BEST video yet & King of The Mountain is the BEST car movie ever... bar none.
1980s and 1990s were great era of motorsports.
This channel deserves 10 million subs. I hope the greatest success for you, and I know it will happen.
Porsche now: "uhhh we actually wont sell you a car until you buy a pair of our shoes and a watch, and own 3 used cars first"
Porsche then: "yeah we gave our sensitive racing documentation to a street racer so he could beat up on tourists LMAO"
Great history, so cool of Chris to be part of it!
you re the best automotive channel in youtube, i get emocional with every video and history you reveal, thanks.
Great video-I’ve taken my 981 Porsche Cayman S and Ford fiesta ST on Mullholand a few times-i didn’t know what legendary stretch i was driving on but thank you for doing this video and showing the legacy and history of this beautiful road.
The video made me realise how much i need a chop top old school Porsche turbo 😮
Cool history of this location and some movies that where part of it.
Albon and Hunter's Moon drop in the same week?!? I'm in heaven!
As a s13 owner and love everything cars. I wanna say thank you. you can see the dedication and passion in your videos. Keep these mini docs coming brotha great work!
NEW HUNTER MOON VIDEO
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I bought my first car a 65 fastback in 81 and watched King of the Mountain not long after. I’d grown up on motorcycles since 7 and speed was my obsession . I lived near some unpopulated awesome long and winding roads. I went thru a lot of tires. But I always wondered what happened to this movie. Hard to find now I know the real story! Thanks for doing this video. I can’t wait for the update!
New to the channel and what a story, to me these guys are the real heroes of Motorsport and true innovators, I subbed to your channel too, watching in Wales UK 🏴.
Rnickymiuse was big with mulholland for motorcycles
Hunter Moon bring untold stories to peoples attention, keep up the good work!!!
Again another awesome and educational video! I love these old historical underground racing videos. Keep up the great work!
I was born and raised in West Hollywood I'm 62 years old I used to have Mazda RX3 turbo Carl Lawton who used to build cars out of a garage off of pico and crescent heights built my car for me. I used to go up there every weekend one some races lost some races. I'm up on Mulholland everyday with my business I have a mobile car detailing company now
This is like an old school American version if Initial D First Stage. Thus is awesome
