The Carolingian Dynasty was not named after Charlemagne. It was named after his grandfather, Charles Martel (the Hammer), who was an incredibly influential general. He wrestled the Frankish kingdoms from the Merovingians, and put them under the control of his son, Pepin.

I actually did this one myself recently. Stayed French and catholic throughout the playthrough. Ended up mending the Schism before restoring Rome and then just let it run until 1453
@idontlikerome2744 Before taking the thrones for myself I had Dynasty members leading the HRE and Byzantines. Who had been slowly converting land to French and catholic for about 150 -200years. Ended up controlling about 80% of the map in the end. Funnily enough I took all of Africa and India before actually getting HRE and Byzantines in my realm which I did around 1450. Basically French control of everything in British Isles, Iberia, Africa, Half the middle east and then all of India. HRE was basically Germany, Italy, Scandanavia and Eastward well into Russia. Byzantines had normal territory +Balkans as well as a fair bit of northern middle east. Overall was a very fun playthrough with me facing the endgame for the first time. The toughest part was crusading India facing absolute death stacks of hundreds of Champions. Far beyond the Muslim stacks that peaked at 260 Champions before I wiped them off the map.

There should be an achievement and decision by taking out the Karlings in the 867 start date. I practically conquer Europe or the Steppe. I do it with a Serer custom character every time I play or conquer the Maygars and then move them to Britannia and help the conquer it all.
Step 1 max out your domain and vassal limit as duke. Step 2 dissolution war to destroy France kingdom title. Step 3 join hre. Step 4 become king of Francia Step 5 become the hre emperor

I love merging the last of the Karlings with the last of the Wessex line. Oh the fun I've had reforming wonderful empires with this mix.
