Absence of bodily fluids doesn't necessarily mean it's clean. Bacteria won't illuminate under the UV light

as someone who used to work as a house keeper just, just dont touch walls in hotel rooms. we do not wash them its already a pain to clean the floors in every room. everything else is clean but not those walls.

Thanks Grant this blog was informative I understand how important it is to have a clean enviroment.I too have stayed in hotels & motels including Best Western. After having past jobs doing custodial & having a mom who was a nurse & taught me how to clean as part of chores I'll notice where cleaning hadn't been thorough. I'd be scared to death to go over the locker room at my gym with one of those uv lights after seeing how sloppy & careless they are. The key is thoroughness, clean cleaning supplies & tine.
So bottom line I guess? .. stay away from the walls and use light switches with caution?

The funny thing is if you did this test in most people's homes it would be 100 times dirtier. Yet we worry about a comparatively pristine hotel room just because it's other people's dirt.

I used to be one of the people who cleaned those rooms. Some messes are really difficult to clean up, so the messes you found are no surprise to me. I was always hesitant to clean the walls because sometimes the paint would start coming off. I have to say this UV flashlight would actually be a really useful tool for people in that line of work.
I'd also like to say that if any of you people reading this ever went on spring break in college, I can assure you that you made the housekeeping staff's jobs a living nightmare.

A Canadian tv show did a hole episode about this. They also did one about how when you get your oil changed and they say abunch of other stuff is wrong they're screwing you over.
The show is called marketplace
some oil change places dont even change your oil... nor your oil filter... or they don't put the correct oil in your vehicle.. That's why I change my own oil :)

It's irrelevant what tap water can contain. Bottle water is largely just tap water, often bottled locally to you.
I just got the uv light that grant is using on this video and man it is the best one I have ever used real high quality.
That's why every time we go to a hotel we bring disinfecting wipes and we wipe down everything we'll be touching: Light switches, handles, remotes, the strings and rods for the blinds, faucets, microwave, etc. And we NEVER use the coffee pot. I've heard horror stories of people peeing in them and they rarely get washed. And if they do, its still almost impossible to get the inner tubes and stuff very clean.

This actually doesn't show how clean the hotel is. That isn't how it works.
You're seeing all sorts of things. Clean or dirty. Lots of things show up under a UV light.
You would see much more if you used the methods used at crime scenes or professional sanitizing teams.

Then it'll be the exact same thing. VOSS is already bottled tap water. The only difference is that this time the tap water came from America instead of Norway.
It is filtered though, the limit on TDS for purified bottled water in the US is 10ppm but tap water is usually 150+
its actualy water shipped all the way from norway. Norwegian high end water, still not the best tho

The cleaner is amazing. I've found some dirty stuff in hotels. Aside from a bed bug and roach experience, the worst was probably this one hotel that didnt change sheets of the people checking out didnt put the all the bedding/sheets on the floor. Hair all over the bed amd pillows. Even in the blankets in the closet. Dirty kitchen and dishes.
That motel did great! They deserve business if they do everything as well as cleaning

Just saying, it's not like UV light makes bacteria show up bright green.. Clear laundry detergent glows bright colors under a blacklight. The light switch could be that color from cleaning solution getting stuck in between the holes of the letters, and the holes of the screws. So in a weird contrast, you could actually be witnessing a LACK of cleaning in the cheap motels? Just an idea, not trying to criticize!
Or in a counter-contrast, it could also be a potential over-cleaning in the expensive locations, which in turn caused more resistant bacteria, that just so happened to be luminescent in UV light as well...? Eh, maybe not.
I suppose the only way to find out would be further testing.

I worked for the Best Western Chain, they are some of the cleanest you can stay at. Their housekeepers have their own UV flashlights on the cleaning carts and have strict standards for the brand to be cleaned even if it appears to be clean, they are so strict that the hotel may loose franchisee rights if not kept up to the brands standards. They are much higher than other hotels I've worked for (such as the Wyndham Group)

I work at a MOTEL and we bleach and wash the walls and ceilings twice a year when we deep clean the rooms. I used to work at a Holliday inn and we never deep cleaned a room haha.

you would see everything flourescent better with some glasses, that block blue/uv light
Pee is the more common bodily fluid in hotels, and it also glows. Delamintaing plastic can cause weird glowing spots, some plastics, glues and grouts/joint compounds have weird glows... some detergents glow and the pillow may have had hair products on it... Usually the walls are the grossest part of any hotel room, but you don't need a UV light to prove that.

Hello! friendly neighborhood hotel housekeeper here!!! if the walls are textured the housekeepers can't really wipe them down so they do tend to fall by the wayside. the sheets will most likely always be clean. where you really have to worry about is the towels and the bathrooms. bathrooms are always risky business.

I've always preferred medium priced hotels to super pricey hotels. My favorite hotel has free breakfast, dinner, Internet, soda, and tv but some expensive hotels don't even have wifi free.
