In today's episode of "RUclipsrs Prove How Dumb They Are" Shady Doorags shows he doesn't know how to spell "indicted". Also I've been told Daria is on Paramount Plus.
I had a history teacher get pissed at me because I knew more about certain parts of history than she did and I had more enthusiasm than she did. We talked about Henry the 8th but I wasn’t trying to be a dick or anything I just raised my hand and said, “but I thought Oliver Cromwell charged her with adultery” She got pissed for some reason and said I was incorrect but to be fair she did apologize once she double checked.
Had a community college teacher that was doing civil war to modern American history. He was initially going to give us a take home final, but decided we'd do it verbally together as a class rather than make us come back just to hand in the paper. My friend and I sat at the back and looked like we barely paid attention till we started answering almost every question for the class, about half way through he said that was enough answers from us.
That happened to you too. I usually kept To myself. I was often doodling as I listened best doing that. Doodling kept me from spacing out. I would often participate in class a lot because no one else would and I felt bad for the teacher. I barely did more than anything than sleep and do homework and read. So I often knew the answers. No one else cared. So if I knew the answer my hand would automatically shot up no one else would try. My arm would instantly raise like It was like a reflex. It causes me a lot of anxiety to be paid attention To. But I felt so bad for the teacher trying to teach us putting in all that effort and nobody caring. I wanted to show that at least I cared, I was learning. Their efforts are not wasted. So I swallowed my anxiety and fear and instantly went to answer thinking I was helping the teacher, Helping the class. I also thought that if I participated that may be other people would want to As well. But I'd be the only one that participate, And then even I stopped after the teacher told me to stop participating so much and let others Have a try. That broke me. I was participating because no one else was. I stopped. And I teach your bag for anyone else to participate. No one did. So she started calling out on people. 😢 Stupid f****** teacher. Way to kill the only student that gave enthusiasm to your class. And actually respected you. I didn't really have friends and people ostracized me anyways so I had nothing to lose. I enjoyed learning, I appreciated my, teachers, the lunch ladies, The librarians, And the janitors, which i had always take the time to thank for all their hard work. I just wanted everyone to be happy and encouraged to try their best. I loved the show Daria. One of my favorite shows and she is 1 of my favorite characters.
I don't know if anybody else has already explained this, but it's been speculated that the lady doing the test intentionally graded Daria with "low self esteem" as revenge for getting smart with her. This is actually a recurring theme in the show: adults abusing their power to punish the students, mainly Daria herself.
Something about two ponies frolicking in a field, wild & free??? I wasn't paying attention because the vein on Mr. DeMartino's forehead was especially swollen that day, and I didn't want to miss the Aneurysm...
I don't know if this is a hot take, but I actually think the last season or so was pretty bad. Ever since the introduction of Tom Sloane, the show felt less like a satire and more like a typical teen rom-com.
Whenever I meet someone named Quinn I always immediately hear Sandy saying "Gee Quinn." I think it's one of the best depictions of high school life that I've seen. Depth takes a Holiday is pretty out there and might make for an interesting episode (though apparently a lot of the Daria fandom hate it).
@@wimsylogic65 Well, the Quinn from Daria's show *is* the most pertinent to THIS comment thread. 😏 (Though Dr. Quinn IS a entertaining character, and I take nothing away from her.)
The Social Studies teacher (Mr. Dimartino) makes several appearances in the series, and he is every bit as colorful as he is here. The characters remain fairly consistent throughout the series as well. And yeah Daria is not always in the right, and several episodes have her conflicting with herself as well.
Definitely need to go through the entire series. I've been friends with Darias va for years online now and even tho she doesn't do va anymore she still loves the character.
I just wanna say I love your awkwardness. Watching you stumble over "bite the bullet" made me smile, you have a way of being so personable every video feels like a conversation. Keep up the good work.
not gonna lie this comment made me feel better about my own awkwardness in my videos when I stammer or stutter, wish i had a viewer like you on my own channel
Mr. DeMartino is the best. If SD keeps up with this series, I'm hoping he releases a video just on him. Also, reaction video-wise, "Arts n' Crass" is amazing and probably worth reacting to.
His personality in this episode feels odd though. In the rest of the series he has any obvious respect for Daria, and considers her to be one of the few good things about teaching.
@@PoseurGoth This is true. This is kind of a typical pilot episode problem, not every character is fully realized yet. Also though, at this point he didn't know Daria at all yet, so had no reason to suspect she was any different than the Kevins of the world.
@@PoseurGoth As panpolypuff pointed out, this was the first time DeMartino had ever met Daria. He was used to his students being like Kevin and Brittany.
I’d love of you reacted to every single episode of Daria, as it was really fun watching this and feeling like I was sitting with someone that was finding one of my favorite shows as enjoyable as I do. 😊
The angry teacher's name is Dimartino and yes he is very enjoyable. Also, Daria's friend is Jane and I think the blonde you were referring to was Brittany.
Yes, the history teacher is a reoccurring character, just about all the characters with speaking lines come back throughout (except for the "therapist"). I really like Brittany (the cheerleader) because she's so shallow but isn't a bad person. Usually the cheerleader character is the mean girl the second episode "The Invitation" kind of shows this. If you end up reviewing episodes, I would like to see a review of "The Misery Chick".
Velma is just the latest in a long line of failed Daria clones, where the bad ones always go wrong is that they’re self-inserts so they get to be as rude and condescending as they want to everyone else and as a result everyone will basically shower them with praise and affection and never challenge their moral superiority even when they haven’t really done anything particularly good or righteous.
When I read your comment I was like "what do you mean!? Mystery Inc. Velma was amazing" and then like bad aftertaste I remembered Mindy's Velma existed.
@@TheMasterBlaze yeah I’m noticing that, clearly we’re at the forget it ever existed and move on to hating on something else part of the process now. I’m just not sure what it is we’re currently hating, new The Marvels trailer? The Mandilorian finale? One of the upcoming Star Wars movies? I know it’s not the new Super Mario Bros movie but it was really fun watching everyone try.
@@vergilmontiero2558 It was the rare show that had an ending, actually. It wrapped up its plot. Like a good story should. It did, however, leave things open for more unrelated adventures.
Yeah, her dad was trying to be nice to her, but he was just comparing her to her sister. You don't do that to your kids, and not expect some resentment. Also, Mr. DeMartino is easily one of my favorite characters, too.
I think one thing people don't understand about the show (those weird fans that said "Daria is so much like me") is that the series tries to teach Daria that even if she is in right that doesn't excuse her of being mean to other people. Oh! an interesting episode to react would be "Season 02 Episode 07 - The New Kid"
I don't know if they necessarily don't understand, I think Daria is an ambiguous character, and people can relate to a character without thinking they're an ideal role model. My mom has told me that she could be like that when she was younger (largely reacting to bad experiences, I had to be kept away from my material grandfather, and my mom had some abusive teachers), but doesn't think Daria's demeanor is ideal.
teenagers are mean for no reason sometimes thats like the whole point of puberty ur hormones are out of whack and it makes u a little mean nobodies perfect everyone has their mean moments🤷🏾♀️
That was awesome! For specific episodes… I Don’t with Helen’s family was a fun one. The art contest episode (Arts and Crass) was another good one that might be interesting. Misery Chick is one where they turn the lens back on Daria for her disaffect. Write Where It Hurts and The New Kid are also great!
I totally agree! I think he should start with Misery Chick first, especially as a 1st time viewer. It really does a great job fleshing out side characters, going into the Jane/Daria friendship and going into who Daria is vs others perception of her.
This was my first time seeing Daria too, actually. I was a baby when it premiered and MTV was a huge no-no in my houses. So my only exposures to it were the occasional glimpses of it from channel surfing or (eventually) RUclips clips. Now I mostly hear it referenced or regarded as a great example of how to make a rude but likable female protagonist. I actually laughed a few times at the clips you showed. I’m considering giving it a chance now :)
I'm much the same, didn't have cable as a kid so I never even heard of it. Will say, I had so many good laughs. Also, excellent job of making her not a horrid person. She's just mildly irritating but in a very believable way and a way that's very funny
I fully agree. I've only had passing knowledge about Daria, and never really gave the show a fair shake. But after this reaction video, I laughed way more than I thought I would, and ended up liking Daria herself more than I thought I would. Definitely going to give this show a watch sometime
There are two TV movies in that box set. Is It Fall Yet? takes place between seasons 4 & 5 and Is It College Yet? takes place at the end of the series. It is important to watch Is It Fall Yet? before season 5 because season 4 ends on a bit of a cliffhanger that is resolved in that movie, and isn't mentioned in the season 5 premiere. I would love to see reviews of : "Gifted" "Pierce Me" "Write Where It Hurts" (Season 2 Finale) "Through a Lens Darkly" "Daria!" (The Musical Episode) "Lane Miserables" "Jane's Addition" (Season 3 Finale) "Dye! Dye! My Darling" (Season 4 Finale) "Is It Fall Yet?" (1st Movie) "Lucky Strike" "My Night at Daria's" "Boxing Daria" (Season 5 finale)
With Daria, she pushes the envelope to challenge people, I don't think the idea is that she's malicious or even unfeeling, but has a perspective that's more realistic and not catering to social norms
I watched all of Daria 2 years ago, and loved it! It seems dull only on the surface in the first few minutes, but trust me, it's actually good and there is more than Daria and the cast than people give them credit for.
Hell yeah! Funny enough, I think Daria is closer to what King of the Hill stands for than what shows like Degrassi did, shows I saw side by side with Daria when it was on Teen Nick. It wasn't spearheaded by Mike Judge, but it definitely felt like it has the spirit of his humor. That's how I remember it, at least.
Saw an ad for this show one day about 15 years ago and then decided to just watch it online. Binged it and loved it, one of the best animated shows I've ever watched.
@@johnindigo5477 Yeah (well, about 15 years, might've been less actually), hadn't even heard about it prior to that. Maybe it wasn't as well-known in the UK or I was too young to remember it before then.
The thing about Daria is that she is portrayed as a teen and a well written one. She is very smart, insightful and has her own unapologetic opinion, but she is also inmature enough to judge things hardly through her own scope of morals and beliefs that are very rigid. She is a likeable character because this is not just her world, she learns and grows in the show, the show recognizes when she is right and punishes her when she is wrong and we see some of us in her trhough her strengths and weaknesses. And the show also takes the time to see the good and bad aspects of the rest of the cast. It's truly one of the best animations I've seen and a must see.
Well put. I remember the episode involving her treatment of the sheltered homeschool kid. He was such a genuinely nice, kind cinnamon roll but Daria initially views him through this lens of cynicism she developed. He makes her a gift to thank her for being a good friend and she rudely rejects it, thinking it has romantic connotations or thinking that accepting it will put her in social debt to him somehow. There were no strings attached though. He was only being kind. Daria eventually realizes her mistake and regrets pushing away someone who had only ever given her honest friendship. I forget his name but that boy never became a recurring character. I can see why though. He was too wholesome.
My favorite episodes of Daria are the ones where while she’s allowed to be funny and disillusioned, other people call her out and she has to actually care about shit. Off the top of my head: Gifted, See Jane Run, and Misery Chick all fall into that category and have some of the best stories in the series!
daria is such a good series. All of the characters are iconic for the time this show came out, and as the show goes on, it's really hard to legitimately hate any of them. Having watched most, if not all, of your KOTH reviews, I would LOVE to see you review Daria as well.
So happy to see you give Daria a shot! I truly didn't know if you'd like it. I thought maybe Daria's low-effort attitude could rub you the wrong way to the point you just couldn't enjoy it (like @3:04) and that was very much the 90's teen headspace they were going for. It's exaggerated, of course, but that really was the vibe at the time and watching it gives me the nostalgia feels lol Her attitude can be abrasive but she actually acknowledges when she's being a prick and when she was wrong. Her chemistry with Jane is amazing and the one-liners are fire. Coolest of all, over the course of the series you see legit character growth from nearly every character in the show with a name. The people evolve and change and that was just not a thing you saw in episodic TV at the time, especially not in animation.
thats the real point of shine of daria as a show tho, like it was a series really made to emphasize with the youth but also talk about when the "issues" aren't so much other people but themselves also being part of the problem without demonizing making mistakes and learning from it, tahts so hard for many shows to do even now days without either making the character look awful or forgiving way too easy people that actually did extremely wrong
So cool that you're finally discovering Daria ! It was so wholesome seeing you laugh! I hope you'll react to other episodes, there are so many good ones! And you'll get to see a lot more of your favourite teacher, don't worry ☺️
Her issue at the beginning with her dad in the car is that she gets that a lot. She's already exhausted by people before the show starts and she's already tired of her parents making her out to be "less than" because she's different. Happens a lot in the show. Yes, her dad was trying to be caring but to Daria, it's just another time where her dad has a "special talk" with her that her sister doesn't have to deal with.
So happy you get a chance to see Daria. One of the reason why Daria isn't streamed, is it's use of copyrighted music. So, while the dialog and shows rights are available, trying to get the copyright of the music is next to impossible.
I’d love to see Shady react or review The Misery Chick. It’s a season 1 episode and I think it handles the subject matter of that episode in a way we don’t really see often.
I’m glad you enjoyed the show. Shady! If you continue streaming these episodes, wait till you get to the episode Arts and Crass, because it’s Helen’s greatest moment.EDIT: title is Arts and Crass. Stupid auto correct
Arts and crass OMG yes. (Spoilers) "All right, Ms. Li, let me get this straight. You took my daughter's poster from her, exhibited it against her will, and are now threatening disciplinary action because you claimed she defaced her own property, which you admit to stealing?" BAD ASS Helen!!!!!!
@@joshuafranklin1399 Ah dang!!! WEll I was going from memory and it's been a few years lol. You took my daughter's poster from her, altered its contents, exhibited it against her will, and are now threatening discipline because you claim she defaced her OWN property, which you admit to stealing? There we go LOL
Oh boy looks like I need to rewatch this series in full. When it aired I had like... 3-5 years of ESL under my belt so had to rely on the translated captions and definitely missed so many jokes because of that.
Man I love your sense of humor, your laughter is contagious, and I definitely enjoy hearing your perspective! I try not to miss your videos. I watched this show growing up, it definitely gets better and I hope you enjoy watching the rest of it.
10:53 The Mexican-American War. Had to Google that one, 'cause much like you Shady, social studies and history was also not my forte in school. But I'm posting it here in hopes that anyone else stumbling upon this who is curious enough can appreciate that they happened across the answer from a comment.
Thanks for reacting to this show (the costumes almost always exist). It gets kind of weird, especially when a certain Charles shows up. The Velma comparison was excellent! Daria is a classic snarker. And don't worry, Mr. DiMartino is here to stay.
Season 1 Episode 7 The Lab Rat would make for an interesting episode. I like how the dynamics of the characters are shuffled around in that episode and it leads to a lot of laughs. Alternatively the finale Episode 13 The Misery Chick could be interesting because of how it addresses the idea of death and how different people cope different ways.
"I'm gonna watch Daria" This news makes me very happy I hope you like it, and if you talk about it just know that I will *FEDINITELY* be tuning in for that episode.
Great to see a first time reaction video from somebody who really gets the material. I was a teenager when it aired and kind of took it for granted, only really learning to appreciate it when I became nostalgic for the MTV era. Your response to characters like Quinn makes me feel eager for you to meet Sandi.
So happy that you've watched it and Mr. DeMartino is absolutely one of if not the best characters in the show, even best personality. He most likely WILL be your favorite character!
In the original 90's airing, they would actually play licensed songs in the show. I always try to find old TV or VHS rips from MTV when rewatching the show.
As a whole, you'd likely enjoy this show. Some really good episodes and story arcs that span a few episodes, if not a whole season. I was in high school when this show was airing so it definitely means a lot to me.
My favourite character is actually Quinn. She was introduced as a brat but in the end she was the antithesis of the pick me girl. She wasn't afraid of being bubbly and girly and being into fashion but she was also smart and sensitive like her sister and ambitious like her mother.
The problem is the music copyrights. They had to replace or cut it ALL. If you remember it with actual MTV hits in the 90s, it's hard to rewatch when you KNOW this scene has REM - Everyvody Hurts or another specific song playing and the DVD has silence.
Key episodes to consider reviewing or live reacting to as someone who used to binge Daria as my comfort show in College: -Season 1 Episode 06 "This Year's Model" -Season 1 Episode 09 "Too Cute" -Season 1 Episode 13 "The Misery Chick" -Season 2 Episode 01 "Arts 'N' Crass" -Season 2 Episode 06 "Monster" -Season 2 Episode 13 "Write Where It Hurts" -Season 3 Episode 02 "Through a Lens Darkly" -Season 3 Episode 09 "Jake of Hearts" -Season 4 Episode 01 "Partner's Complaint" -Season 4 Episode 08 "Psycho Therapy" -Season 5 Episode 04 "Camp Fear" -Season 5 Episode 06 "Lucky Strike" -Season 5 Episode 13 "Boxing Daria" Plus the two adjoined movies: Is it Fall Yet (which takes place between Season 4 and Season 5) and Is it College Yet the official series finale. The movies are on the last disc, so you'll have to take the disc with the early episodes of season 5 out of the player, change disks, watch Fall Yet and then go back to the prior disc. It's little annoying, but worth it to watch the series in order. There are more good episodes, but I wanted to highlight some of the best to talk about. Whether they have some great character writing, or showcase Daria being in the wrong, these are among the strongest episodes in the series to give special attention to. There were more good ones than just these, but it would defeat the purpose to hand you 20+ episodes of top quality must-view Daria. There are only 2 episodes that are non-canonical, and you'll know which two they are when you watch them. One of them is good. The other one.... Daria fans don't talk about that one.
ALL EXCELLENT CHOICES. The Misery Chick was the first episode that made me sit up and take notice. The show was not going to be pulling punches! Arts 'N' Crass is a phenomenal demonstration of the fact that, while she's busy and distracted a lot of the time, Helen has Daria's BACK. Write where it hurts also gets me every time--I take that last scene as canon (I know the artists did drawings of what the characters were like later but I refuse to believe it. Daria's short story is exactly how everything turns out and I will not hear anything else about it!). Lucky Strike is one of my favorites too! Quinn in class!!! And I loved how Stacey and Tiffany were like "Uh duh we knew that" LOL!!! Eat it Sandi. And Boxing Daria was incredible. When she finds the box in her bedroom that Quinn left there???? Such growth, omg. Because Quinn was whining about dragging the thing on flat ground with HELP--getting it up the stairs alone would've ACTUALLY been difficult, but she did it for Daria! Too sweet. I also loved the movies and the episode Fizz Ed (First episode of S 5) if only because the part where Brittany comes over in the soda can outfit and says "You can't build a human pyramid in these! Everyone keeps rolling off!" Makes me laugh no matter how many times I hear it.
@@joshuafranklin1399 Oof that one is so goofy. I usually skip it lol. I don't remember any other non-canon one though? Doesn't mean there wasn't one, just means I don't remember it
@@joshuafranklin1399 I JUST REMEMBERED it's the hurricane one. It's a musical. I forget what it's called but that's the other non-canon one. (The hurricane may have actually happened but the singing wasn't canon I wouldn't think)
I am so glad I got to witness your reaction to Daria, even if only the first episode. I grew up on this show, and am so sad the dvd collection had to remove all the licensed music, but I still love the heck of it. I definitely need to rewatch it again now! Hope you enjoy the rest of the show, Shady.
Daria was a great show, the kid wearing “The Head” t-shirt was a reference for an old MTV Liquid Television animation series, a very bizarre animated series… also look up “The Maxx”
The fact that Mr. DiMartino and Kevin are voiced by the same person never ceases to amuse me. (In the extras, when you see the cast interviews, you can see that the actor who plays Kevin is the closest to his character.)
I was born in the 90s and even as a young kid I really sympathized with Daria. A loner with more intelligence than the rest who was a bit socially awkward and with an attitude. And now was a bit of a nihilistic adult who hates modern society, I still sympathize with her
What's dope about this series is how the characters evolve especially in the last season. Some of the character are unrecognizable to who they were in season 1. If you liked the first episode you are gonna love everything that comes after it.
The alternate costumes are alternate egos that the characters have inside…sort of reimagining themselves but we don’t get to see these personalities within the show
It's so surreal since you were the Creator that really opened me up to Daria, and now it's one of my favorite series and now I'm seeing you and your first look into it, it makes me feel pretty appreciative on how media can unite others via experience
One of Daria's USP's was that it carefully reflected the mechanics of the generation at that time and the lead character/s were intelligent, observant than everyone else
😂 this is going to be one of those shows for you. the cast is recurring and all have strong and distinct personalities and actually over the course of the series and the comedy and social commentary is consistent.
Man, this brings me back. I used to watch this show when it first aired way back in the day. It was never a favorite, but I did really enjoy it. 3:07 As one of the kids who just didn't even try in PE, I totally feel her there. Sports were just not a thing I cared about. You could sometimes get me invested in winning, but that was rare. 16:17 Oh hey, The Head! 19:10 You know, that's actually a good question for that kind of thing... Though my answer would have been "whichever you want". 21:50 Man, I remember those credits! So many weird outfits and stuff.
I'm willing to bet we'll see a review of "Misery Chick" down the line. Great series, love to see you getting into it. It really is this uniquely competent sarcastic series that tackles the feeling of being an introvert in highschool at that time period. Good time capsule of life before social media.
Dude, I didn't realize till I watch this, but Velma is trying to be Daria. But the Velma show doesn't understand Daria. You should totally make a comparison video on this!
Should be noted that the original series had lots of licensed music. Some music chosen specifically for certain scenes and whatnot, as is the case for most Mtv productions. Daria is great without it, but I'd if you can find bootlegs of the original airings of Daria, you'll be getting an enhanced experienced for sure. The DVD set has some nice bonuses. "Making Of" type stuff, music videos, and they even include show intros in-between the episodes that were used for marathons. The best bonus is a digital copy of the script for a Daria spinoff about Mystik Spiral. The never made pilot episode would have been about Trent and the band moving out of Lawndale and making one last attempt to "make it."
There's only one occasion that comes to mind where the music change really does negatively impact the show, and that's in the episode "Road Worrier", where the song "Everybody Hurts" is a very important part of a joke, and being cut for the DVD release ruins the whole thing.
I'm glad you liked the series. I watched Daria all the time as a kid and it really influenced me. I hope you do make a video on the series because I know you'll enjoy it. My favourite episode is Arts and Crass which I think you would enjoy making a video on. When you do binge the series, there are 2 movies and you need to watch Is It Fall Yet? after season 4 because it aired before season 5 and ties up a plot point and if you miss the movie you'll be confused why spoilers happed. Is It College Yet? is the series finale.
One hypothesis I have since a Daria rewatch back in 2014/2015 is that the parents from Rick and Morty are based on Jake and Helen in Daria. The more you watch the more the "Put upon sadsack/over bearing control freak" dynamic shines through. Also, as you mentioned, Daria is very clearly what Velma wanted to be. It felt to me like it was written by a person loved Daria but didn't really understand WHY it was funny. Also the character Ozzie in 'That 90's Show' has a few lines that are references to Daria. As he is their resident disillusioned Sarcastic 90's Kid.
Hey Shady, thanks for reviewing another new (old) show! I’ve never seen it before either, it just never appealed to me but I’ll gladly listen to your thoughts on it 😊😊😊 Thanks for the new video Shady and go hug your furbabies all 💙🐱💙
Super glad you did a video on Daria. I've watched your videos on King of the Hill and Miraculous Ladybug and loved your videos on those two series. I hope you continue episode reviews for Daria! A couple pretty hilarious episodes that I think you'd enjoy that I'd recommend would be S1 EP8: "Pinch Sitter" or S1 EP12: "Teachings of Don Jake" Also, so you know... Your laughter is very contagious.
I dare say Daria is one of the best written female characters ever in animation and she came as a Beavis and Butthead side character, Just like the inspiration for Hank Hill.
I’m in my 30’s and seen Daria during childhood because my mom liked it, saw it at teens, at mid 20’s & recently a few months ago and found the following: I always liked Daria but Jane is just amazing I wish i was as free as Trent but… I see myself everyday it passes in Jake’s shoes, i have a good relationship with my dad but i find Jake’s neurosis and distraction really relatable I wonder what i’m going to think in 5 years
In today's episode of "RUclipsrs Prove How Dumb They Are" Shady Doorags shows he doesn't know how to spell "indicted".
Also I've been told Daria is on Paramount Plus.
also the brake fluid vs transmission debate.... lol. Great video
Fuxken love you Shady!!
You're not alone lol. I pronounced it the way you did the first time I saw the show back in the day.
in your defense, that's a particularly weirdly spelled word. doesn't follow any language's convention that i'm aware of.
Didn’t you JUST say on stream how English was your best subject? (I can’t spell for shit either)
As someone who got told to give other students an opportunity to answer, that “DARIA STOP SHOWING OFF!” was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen.
Yeah I know how you feel
I had a history teacher get pissed at me because I knew more about certain parts of history than she did and I had more enthusiasm than she did.
We talked about Henry the 8th but I wasn’t trying to be a dick or anything I just raised my hand and said, “but I thought Oliver Cromwell charged her with adultery”
She got pissed for some reason and said I was incorrect but to be fair she did apologize once she double checked.
I enjoyed learning, I appreciated my, teachers,
the lunch ladies, The librarians, And the janitors, which i had always take the time to thank for all their hard work.
I just wanted everyone to be happy and encouraged to try their best.
I loved the show Daria. One of my favorite shows and she is 1 of my favorite characters.
@@wimsylogic65 yeah I hated that to, after my mom failed me, I tried to better but it wasn't appreciated
I don't know if anybody else has already explained this, but it's been speculated that the lady doing the test intentionally graded Daria with "low self esteem" as revenge for getting smart with her. This is actually a recurring theme in the show: adults abusing their power to punish the students, mainly Daria herself.
Interesting, haven't seen the show yet but that's something to keep in mind.
Yes, it is that exactly.
Teachers do that to autistic kids all the f$&ing time. Can’t stand authority figures, especially when it’s undeserved
"She's forgotten more about self-esteem then I will ever know"
that turn of phrase is amazing
Something about two ponies frolicking in a field, wild & free??? I wasn't paying attention because the vein on Mr. DeMartino's forehead was especially swollen that day, and I didn't want to miss the Aneurysm...
Please continue reacting to Daria, the show only gets better from here and your commentary is very fun
Facts
So much facts
This 💯
I don't know if this is a hot take, but I actually think the last season or so was pretty bad. Ever since the introduction of Tom Sloane, the show felt less like a satire and more like a typical teen rom-com.
Yes, I really suggest he reacts to a season 3 episode honestly because the characters are more set in their personalities
I was a disaffected teen in the 90s. I WAS the target demographic for Daria.
I was but a disaffected gradeschooler in the 90s. I couldn't relate to the social conditions of high school in the show. Never got into it.
Me, too. I was kind of a Quinn who THOUGHT she was a Daria, tho. lol. I was a Daria poser.
@@SaltpeterTaffy man my schools were just like this way before high school.
@@mmmuuuuuuuuiiiiiiiiirrrrr like that adorable girl from the camp episode?
I was also a disaffected teen in the 90s, and by disaffected teen i mean nonexistent. Still the target audience tho
I've ADORED "Depth" from the minute that I first viewed it!
It's the ULTIMATE holiday special, and you don't even have to buy a stupid card.
😉
I think of the Quinn from Daria, or the Quinn from Quinn Medicine woman.
@@wimsylogic65
Well, the Quinn from Daria's show *is* the most pertinent to THIS comment thread.
😏
(Though Dr. Quinn IS a entertaining character, and I take nothing away from her.)
I love that episode ❤
or Quinn from Glee 😂
Shady cracking up at the "wild ponies" part got me tickled far and beyond the actual joke.
That was a great joke
"I like having low self esteem. It makes me feel special." Is one of my all time favorite lines
The Social Studies teacher (Mr. Dimartino) makes several appearances in the series, and he is every bit as colorful as he is here. The characters remain fairly consistent throughout the series as well. And yeah Daria is not always in the right, and several episodes have her conflicting with herself as well.
Isn't he a history teacher?
@@MadameChristie I think he covers both. They are often lumped into the same category.
Definitely need to go through the entire series. I've been friends with Darias va for years online now and even tho she doesn't do va anymore she still loves the character.
Ayo forreal? Tell her that I said hi!
AIN'T NO FUCKING WAY.
How??
She defined my youth.
That’s wack!
I still say that.
I just wanna say I love your awkwardness. Watching you stumble over "bite the bullet" made me smile, you have a way of being so personable every video feels like a conversation. Keep up the good work.
I can't agree enough with this comment!
right
not gonna lie this comment made me feel better about my own awkwardness in my videos when I stammer or stutter, wish i had a viewer like you on my own channel
he dont seem awkward at all
Mr. DeMartino is the best. If SD keeps up with this series, I'm hoping he releases a video just on him. Also, reaction video-wise, "Arts n' Crass" is amazing and probably worth reacting to.
Mr. DeMartino’s design makes me think of a Jhonen Vasquez character.
I agree, that'd be a good episode to react to! :D
Ahhhhh..........Britany......
You got your wish
@@TheMasterBlaze yeah I liked mystery Inc. Feels like it ended too prematurely imo.
@@as3957 the entire series is trying to make Daria a better person
@@rafresendenrafresenden.1644 I agree, I just don't know if the people you're talking about necessarily don't understand.
teenagers are mean for no reason sometimes thats like the whole point of puberty ur hormones are out of whack and it makes u a little mean nobodies perfect everyone has their mean moments🤷🏾♀️
@@lillysarethebest409 mean for no reason? they just want clout.
I think you'd have a genuine love of the episode where Daria and her family go camping XDDDDD total classic from start to finish
"Sick, twisted people."
"I know! I had the same neighbors."
"I don't know if this teacher is coming back but he's becoming my favorite character."
Me: Ooooh yeah, he'll be back and he's hilarious every time.
It's so very, very good.
I would love to see reviews of :
"Gifted"
"Pierce Me"
"Write Where It Hurts" (Season 2 Finale)
"Through a Lens Darkly"
"Daria!" (The Musical Episode)
"Lane Miserables"
"Jane's Addition" (Season 3 Finale)
"Dye! Dye! My Darling" (Season 4 Finale)
"Is It Fall Yet?" (1st Movie)
"Lucky Strike"
"My Night at Daria's"
"Boxing Daria" (Season 5 finale)
The angry teacher is a very common character in the show. Glad you enjoyed. It’s a fun ride all the way through.
With Daria, she pushes the envelope to challenge people, I don't think the idea is that she's malicious or even unfeeling, but has a perspective that's more realistic and not catering to social norms
Daria was a amazing show and still holds up really good to this day
I watched all of Daria 2 years ago, and loved it!
I suppose because whoever created Daria was watching Beavis and Butthead and plucked a character from his show.
Saw an ad for this show one day about 15 years ago and then decided to just watch it online. Binged it and loved it, one of the best animated shows I've ever watched.
DAMN RIGHT ❤
2008?
It's exaggerated, of course, but that really was the vibe at the time and watching it gives me the nostalgia feels lol
Her attitude can be abrasive but she actually acknowledges when she's being a prick and when she was wrong.
19:06 "or if we died suddenly and unexpectedly"
And then a few episodes later the show hits you with the episode that. really. makes. you. think.
I think seeing Shady laugh is peak content.
Based
So cool that you're finally discovering Daria !
Ah that sucks. I swear copyrights really screw up a lot of stuff.
The Beavis and Butthead fate
@@AuralayKristine you forgot about changing the content of the poster

Oh boy looks like I need to rewatch this series in full. When it aired I had like... 3-5 years of ESL under my belt so had to rely on the translated captions and definitely missed so many jokes because of that.
The teacher was being petty by putting Daria in the class.
It's funny how now she has a partner in crime because of that petty move.

The Mexican-American War.
Ahh yes! I can’t wait to see Shady’s thoughts on Daria.
"I'm gonna watch Daria"
This news makes me very happy
I hope you like it, and if you talk about it just know that I will *FEDINITELY* be tuning in for that episode.
I want to let you know that Mr. Dimartino is a reoccurring character in the series. He's always a delight to see!
My favorite Daria gag is how they're always eating lasagna for dinner.
Can't wait for Shady to binge the series and the movies and then get to Boxing Daria. That episode at the end of the run always kills me.
This was my absolute favorite cartoon back in my teenage days. Thank you for reacting - Love your content! ❤
your backdrop has Hal Jordan and Sinestro fighting over your RUclips plaque and I'm here for it
I absolutely love Daria. I'm glad you made this video. I believe it's on Paramount+. I'd love to see more Daria vids!
The problem is the music copyrights. They had to replace or cut it ALL. If you remember it with actual MTV hits in the 90s, it's hard to rewatch when you KNOW this scene has REM - Everyvody Hurts or another specific song playing and the DVD has silence.
Key episodes to consider reviewing or live reacting to as someone who used to binge Daria as my comfort show in College:
-Season 1 Episode 06 "This Year's Model"
-Season 1 Episode 09 "Too Cute"
-Season 1 Episode 13 "The Misery Chick"
-Season 2 Episode 01 "Arts 'N' Crass"
-Season 2 Episode 06 "Monster"
-Season 2 Episode 13 "Write Where It Hurts"
-Season 3 Episode 02 "Through a Lens Darkly"
-Season 3 Episode 09 "Jake of Hearts"
-Season 4 Episode 01 "Partner's Complaint"
-Season 4 Episode 08 "Psycho Therapy"
-Season 5 Episode 04 "Camp Fear"
-Season 5 Episode 06 "Lucky Strike"
-Season 5 Episode 13 "Boxing Daria"
Plus the two adjoined movies: Is it Fall Yet (which takes place between Season 4 and Season 5) and Is it College Yet the official series finale.
What's the other non-cannon episode, I know the first one is Depth Takes a Holiday ( The Less we take about that, the better).
@@joshuafranklin1399 Daria! The musical episode. It's not canonical.
Don't worry! Mr. DeMartino is indeed a recurring character, and he is glorious each time. (I relate to him more than I probably should, lol)
Daria was a great show, the kid wearing “The Head” t-shirt was a reference for an old MTV Liquid Television animation series, a very bizarre animated series… also look up “The Maxx”
Daria started on MTV as a character on Beavis and Butthead. Beavis would almost always say "Diarrhea, cha-cha-cha" when they saw her.
The fact that Mr. DiMartino and Kevin are voiced by the same person never ceases to amuse me. (In the extras, when you see the cast interviews, you can see that the actor who plays Kevin is the closest to his character.)
As someone who recently binged the whole series I'm glad to see your enjoying it as much as I did👍
My new life goal is the find things that make me laugh as freely as Shady laughs when he’s watching Daria.
I was born in the 90s and even as a young kid I really sympathized with Daria. A loner with more intelligence than the rest who was a bit socially awkward and with an attitude. And now was a bit of a nihilistic adult who hates modern society, I still sympathize with her
this was great, id like to see more of you reacting to Daria episodes
Daria would be awesome for a character deep dive
Bro, as a devout green lantern enjoyer i must say, those sinestro and hal jordan plaques in the back SLAP
Watching Shady giggling with glee was just fantastic. Im glad he doesnt hate one of my all time favorite cartoons
My AP US History teacher was a carbon copy of Mr. Demartino
Thank you. I'm going to start rewatching Daria tonight. It was my favorite show in school.
One of Daria's USP's was that it carefully reflected the mechanics of the generation at that time and the lead character/s were intelligent, observant than everyone else
I LOVE LOVE LOVE when the teacher at 11:20 talks in the cute voice to Brittany. I couldn't stop laughing for about 10 minutes afterwards.
Agreed on Misery Chick, really good episode and worth a mention
Good prediction
I miss the 90's MTV back when it was cool. I don't even know what is on MTV anymore because I bailed when Teen mom and jersey shore made their debut.
You know it’s worthy of watching a Shady Doorags video when he’s laughing his ass off! 🤣
Idk that class for "low self esteem" reminds me of that class that Dewey from malcolm in the middle was in after he tested incorrectly for it.
The "emotionally disturbed" class😂
Dude, I didn't realize till I watch this, but Velma is trying to be Daria. But the Velma show doesn't understand Daria. You should totally make a comparison video on this!
I always took the end credits as the crew having fun
Asking a room full of people with low self-esteem to actualize their day dreams seems really dangerous.
I've been watching Daria on Pluto. It's quite satisfying.
I’ve never seen it before either, it just never appealed to me but I’ll gladly listen to your thoughts on it 😊😊😊
Thanks for the new video Shady and go hug your furbabies all 💙🐱💙
Super glad you did a video on Daria.
Plz do more episodes this show is underrated it's gold
I LOVE Daria, I used to watch it when I was like 5 or 6 xD
I dare say Daria is one of the best written female characters ever in animation and she came as a Beavis and Butthead side character, Just like the inspiration for Hank Hill.
@@joshuapannell8131 I second that statement! 🔥💯
I’m in my 30’s and seen Daria during childhood because my mom liked it, saw it at teens, at mid 20’s & recently a few months ago and found the following:
I always liked Daria but Jane is just amazing
I wish i was as free as Trent but…
I see myself everyday it passes in Jake’s shoes, i have a good relationship with my dad but i find Jake’s neurosis and distraction really relatable
I wonder what i’m going to think in 5 years
