Daria is a legendary sitcom because it did a very good job focusing on tough subjects but through the character’s perspective. What I love about the show is that Daria is very smart and has a gift for relying on logic and reasoning to understand what’s right and what’s wrong. Watching her blossom from a shy, pessimistic girl into a bright, intelligent woman is what made this show so great.
Restrictions can be a hinderance to creativity, but they promote innovation. A truly creative person should look for ways to accomplish their goal regardless of obstacles.
@@PrimeofPerfection To be fair to you, you have a point: While creativity is good, RULES ARE IMPORTANT. So many creators these days forget that there are rules to creativity, including deadlines. Some works are just better when there are rules, both in the creative process, and in the work it self, like the rules of how things look, how lore and stories are written, etc.

When you added music after hinting that Daria and Tom would be better together I laughed so hard 😭🤣🙃 waiting for your review on this betrayal patiently
Oh yes, the 90s was the boom period of desktop publishing and affordable multimedia software. This episode aired in 1999, when splash pages were the norm, and Newgrounds and browser game/movie websites of its ilk were en vogue. Don't forget about Macromedia (pre-Adobe) Director and Shockwave!
Yeah this is when you really see the great character work kick in. The Daria/Trent interactions are excellent to have in the show, precisely because they're all at close enough ages that attraction isn't unexpected, and it ultimately shows them handling it in appropriate ways that fit the characters. Trent outright saying "if you were older" is a good healthy boundary to communicate. "I like you, but it wouldn't be right" is good to see... instead of "people 4 years older should never interact with minors ever at all" crap you see. It's GOOD for people of varying ages to end up social, and it's good to learn how to set healthy boundaries and spot what is and isn't appropriate.
I somehow read this comment as that part of the video was playing. Like I started reading the comment right before Tom popped up. This happens to me so often on yt it freaks me out.
That probably explains a mystery I couldn't figure out. From what I understand, the box episode was the series finale, but I remember when I was a kid, I caught an episode of Daria at my cousin's house where she graduated high school.
Can't wait for you to cover the season 4 finale. That was definitely the ultimate, and arguably, final test of Daria and Jane's friendship. And I can't help but love the scene where Daria confesses to Jane about kissing Tom, it felt so natural and well done, other shows would try to overdramatize the reaction to confessions like that... but Jane's reaction looked and felt natural: she becomes completely shocked, and in disbelief asks: "What?!!" But doesn't raise her voice or yell, combined with the look on her face until she turns and runs away.
@rpproductions6241 thanks... I know at a minimum he WENT not graduated from their school... there was definitely a moment when Mr. O'Neil vaguely remembered him...
@kelllee7647 Yeah I looked it up. He's 21 at the start of the show, and Daria is 16. Which makes sense cause I think there's a couple points you see him out drinking.
@@rpproductions6241 Daria doesn't take place in Eastern Europe either so that certainly wouldn't fly....outside a few states in America where the AoC is 16 Man with deadpan humor, there would certainly be plenty of attempts at commentary, especially since the guy acts approximately and doesn't come off as a creeper like it'd be in most media, dude is trying to help and doesn't want anything like that.
That Fidget Trent did that you mentioned, I wonder if it's not so much being alone with Daria as just not being around one of his veteran homies because in one of the movies, when Jane was talking about going to college, Trent seemed upset, and later said it was because "you would be there... and I would be here". Sure, it's not like he's with Jane all the time he's out in public, but the times he isn't with Jane he's usually with his friend, so when he's with neither I think his difficulties in functioning come through more.
God, Trent immediately became 100 times more relatable. My friends are all going to college and I'm not. They're going on to do their own things and here I am. Home. Trying to find some way to make my own road. It's terrifying to know that one day, every one of your friends are gonna leave you. They won't abandon me and we'll always stay in touch, but damn. It's a thought
@@hypnoticskull6342 I know the feeling. When I saw my older brothers' friends kind of drift apart as they got older and went off to college and/or joined the work force, not having time for each other anymore, I swore that I'd never be the friend who never had time for anyone. I really loved Daria when I was a teen and my mom always told me "You are just like Daria" and I thought "sure, I'm reserved and I like books, guess I'm like her 😊". Now that I see it like an adult I'm not that happy with the comparative. 😅
Rizz is short for Charisma, so being persuasive or likable in general, however Rizz is mostly used for seducing/attracting people in a romantic way. Hope this helps and keep being awesome ❤
Personally, I always saw Tom as the more “social” version of Daria (with Jane being a middle ground between the two of that front). He’s just as clever as Daria and Jane, but also has a tendency towards charisma to others and rarely is antagonistic towards others/those of different mindsets/tendencies unless intentionally provoked (as opposed to unintentionally with a lot of other characters). As a hot button character as he is to the fandom, I’m firmly in the “pro-Tom” camp and felt that he added a bit of balance to the dynamic of the core characters that was starting to feel needed, without being so different that he just felt less like a core character than an important side character like say Brittany or even Quinn.
I don't oppose the idea of Tom but in execution he did come across as super bland and lacking in a certain humor compared with the girls. If he had had self deprecation the way that Jane constantly both acts as a release valve and a gentle challenge to Daria's ego in turn with her humorous reflective comments and jokes to Daria's angst
@@StewNWT I think Tom's angle was that he was a smart guy with self-confidence. Enough to counter Daria's mood. It borders on hubris given that he jumped from Jane to Daria. But this is on the writers. Nice that Daria got herself a handsome guy before high school ended.
I'm generally pro-Tom as well. I get all the reasons why he's the most divisive character on the show and the Jane->Tom->Daria arc did a get a little squirrely, but I think it was overall a positive thing for the necessary character challenges it posed to Daria herself. If I have any critiques of Tom, it's that he's a little too perfectly mature to pass as a teenage boy for me. Not saying there aren't mature boys. By most people's standards as I was as close to one as you could get. But Tom talks with the emotional/relational maturity of someone 5-10 years older than him. While it always sounds odd, I think it works because if Daria at this point in the show was actually going to try and get in a long-term relationship with someone and not have it turn into a total train wreck, it would pretty much have to be with someone like Tom. He's the only guy in her sphere who can go toe to toe with her wit and anybody less put-together wouldn't last more than a week with her believably .
@@ariwl1 He is sorta born n bred that way. Goes to a private school where education is more demanding plus he is a kind of pre-Ivy league archetype. Which is there to contrast with Daria's middle class lifestyle and principles.
One of my most memorable episodes for the "Lady Or The Tiger" which I ... reference a lot in my personal life and not sure how the universe keeps setting me up for those ... but also an episode that makes me really mad at my favourite character. Jane is a MENACE in Dye, Dye, My Darling lmao. (I just looked it up and she's referencing a short story from 1885. And we thought DARIA was well read! How does Jane even come across some of the shit she references?)
@@mesektet5776 Oh! I grew up in a particularly rough educational climate so it was never something I was made to read. I missed out on quite a bit of "required reading". I guess the joke had a wider audience than I realized.
Daria avoiding consequences for her attitude problem is probably her persistence and insistence on using monotone, from personal experience, especially in highschool, it's quite effective at pushing people away in a hasty manner, though attitude and snarky comments can often have the reverse effect and cause people to hang around longer, language is funny like that I suppose.
There's an episode where Daria takes lessons from Brittany on how to sound enthusiastic so she can read to the elderly, but Daria fails at it hard. She's not doing the monotone on purpose, she just lacks the skill to sound interested in what she's talking about, something that most people can do naturally.
@@ShadyDoorags Makes me wonder how much of it is a character quirk(?) and how much of it is "what would be funnier/more interesting?" because Daria may lack tonal conveyance for various things, can handle sarcastic perfectly fine, she is very visually expressive and part of that charm only works because of how she is typically, especially when compared to Jane for instance :)
I graduated in 2001 and after getting my Bachelor's, I became a substitute teacher from 2006 to around 2014. Granted, I loved DARIA as a teen (as its run was RIGHT in my High School years), but becoming a sub-teacher made me appreciate this show even more; while fashions and fads change over time, DARIA perfectly got the varied range of overall "Teenhood".
I graduated in 2021 and high school was a lot like this. Grand army is the most accurate but Daria and my so called life gets a lot of the angst right. Just being overwhelmed while also insanely bored
mental health professional here: to take it one step further, this episode is one where daria starts to have a bit of an ego death. she is confronted with the reality that jane is an independent being inherently separate from herself, and that makes jane capable of making decisions for herself that don’t center daria and can be possibly hurtful (such as ditching daria at a concert to go hang out with a boy). daria becomes passive aggressive with tom and jane out of fear of being abandoned and hurt, she’s unable to reckon with the fact that she doesn’t have inherent control over jane as an autonomous being. through talking with tom, daria is able to accept his reassurance and ground herself back in trust for her friend. however, with trent, she’s also able to realize that he is someone incapable of honoring the kind of commitment she needs in a close relationship, and because she cannot control that she realizes exploring a romantic connection with him is not sustainable. i think this was a great episode where daria is actually able to learn how to accept the world as it is (rather than continuing to hold contempt towards it, which stifles her capacity to connect with others).
I kind of want to add something here. I was Daria's age when Daria came out, watched it as it aired, and was told by more than one person that I basically *was* Daria. In a really weird way, I still kind of am. Everything you said about this, about Daria, her responses, how she feels about Jane and how painful it is when you think you might have to make a new friend because the one you have maybe just won't care about you anymore.. it all hits like a truck, especially if, when you get down to brass tacks, you aren't even sure how you managed *this* friendship. Maybe you've never known what to make of it or how long it can last considering how insufferable you know you can be... but some of that insufferable attitude is really only to compensate for the self-fulfilling prophecy that this person *will* get tired of you. It was a tough episode, and I remember at the time that I was frustrated for everyone involved. At the same time, I was in high school in the late 90's. The idea of letting my also-underage friend leave a club with a stranger in a shitty car was almost *viscerally* terrifying to me, no matter what her brother thought or how cool Jane was. It was a lot to grapple with while watching this as it aired, because on one hand, yes, Daria was being shitty and it's her defense-mechanism calling card, but on the other she had a *real* legitimate concern about Jane just up and getting in the car with someone neither of them knew anything about. Getting in touch with someone if your date goes bad is hard; it was a *lot* harder then. So on one hand, yes, everything about Daria definitely stands. On the other hand, I could not figure out why the concern of Jane's actual, literal, physical safety was so casually brushed off by everyone they knew, and it distracted a bit from "this is clearly Daria's problem" by adding in a touch of "why on earth does it feel right now like no one else gives a shit about Jane."
"I speak introvert, and I know what that phrase actually means." Spoken like a true expert there. Good review! I'm actually kind of a Tom fan and it was pretty refreshing to see him stand up to Daria. As fans, we tend to see ourselves in Daria to one degree or another, which makes it easy to forget how unpleasant she can actually be at times. It's to the show's credit that they address this, especially in the later seasons. You also bring up a good point early on when you mention how Daria doesn't like change. It's not something I see commented on very much, but it's pretty apparent. While she might not like her world, she's relatively comfortable in it and is often content to coast along. Jane, on the other hand, is much more willing to upset the status quo and try new things. Might also be because Jane doesn't have as cushy a home life as Daria does, so she has more reason to try and break out of it. I also never noticed how Tom sneaks up on people. It's a little eerie.
Not sure what you mean by "cushy home". Jane's house is a similar size to Daria's. Her parents are very successful in their craft to the point that they take many spontaneous vacations. Jane's parents also give their kids nearly unlimited freedom even in adulthood, hence why Trent still lives with them.
16:46 the “Are the voice actors contractually obligated to have one line per episode?” line is even funnier if you know that Helen, Quinn, and Jane have the same voice actress.
Ahh, I love this. I wish you had seen this in the 90s/early 00s bc the soundtrack used popular 90s/00s music and it really added to the scene, in a way the music in the series just doesn't now. Anyway, I'm subscribing now can't wait to watch your other vids
with some instances of pirating it and also DVDs, it is possible to get the good OG music. i actually (allegedly) watched daria for the first time through some pirate site in 2019 and got the good music, and when i bought a DVD set recently bc attempting to stream my favorite cartoons is exhausting, the music seemed the same! which is great, honestly not having the music it aired with is such a robbery to people streaming it today
There's an important part of Daria's frustration you leave out - imagine you're trying to coordinate a school assignment with your friend and she leaves in the middle of it to go off with some guy she just met. Imagine you're hanging out with your friend and she just invites this guy you don't know to sit with you without even checking with you first. It's uncomfortable and annoying. Maybe you wanted to spend time with your friend and not have to deal with feeling like the third wheel to her new boyfriend, but she didn't give you the chance. Daria shouldn't have been so hostile to Tom, but it's gross that neither Tom nor Jane ever seemed to consider maybe Daria just didn't want to hang out with Tom.
Tom did consider it. When he visits Jane at her house, he tells her that since Daria is already there he's going to leave, but Jane insists he comes in. And at the pizzaria, Tom was only stopping by to say hi. Jane invites him to hang out, but he declines, saying he's planning on leaving soon. Jane certainly overlooks Daria's potential feelings, but Tom is almost always considerate.
Daria was greater than the character, she was the conscious of the community. I always admired Daria for standing out in spite of all the peer pressure that surrounded her. I will never forget the episode where Quinn and Daria had a Freaky Friday moment where Quinn tried to be deep like Daria, but realized it wasn’t for her and Daria got all made up and looked way better than Quinn. Like the saying goes “a smart person can act dumb, but a dumb person cannot act smart” 😂

As someone who is working on last minute college work cause I work full-time, sleep full-time and take college animation part time. This episode really speaks to me about my college work. It really does take me time to think about what I'm going to make and then carry it out. It doesn't help that I was hoping I could pick up some pointers to animation that would help me do better and now I'm going into junior not really having much improvement on my work. It gets so draining doing my college work that I don't even have the energy to do things I like to do, be it drawing, writing, or even make RUclips videos. Goodness, when was the last time I made one of those.
Charles Schultz once said you can't wait for inspiration to strike, otherwise you won't get anything done. That's not the exact quote, but I'm too lazy to rewatch a video to get it. Also, not sure if it was mentioned, but the episode title is a reference to the band Jane's Addiction. While that may seem obvious, they're not quite as popular now as they were when this episode aired.
Like quite a few others here, I graduated high school in 2001, and saw Daria’s Season 4 finale as it first aired. The funny thing is how I got into the show: much like Daria and Jane, my parents moved us from Silicon Valley to the Pacific Northwest in the early 90s, as part of that first California Exodus after the ‘89 San Francisco Quake, the ongoing droughts, and the rising housing costs leading the booming 80s tech sector to relocate north, where Intel, Microsoft, and HP already had a foothold. We met the next door neighbor kids, and like Daria and Jane, became inseparable for years. So much so, when my father and I got into dirt bikes, the neighbors followed suit. When my dad cashed in stock options to get a speedboat, the neighbors followed suit. We spent summer vacations on the island chains on the river together, weekends blasting up and down sand dunes on bikes, and went to the annual car shows and air shows together. It was the neighbors who got my sisters and I into Daria, which became our “Sick Sad World” we’d watch religiously as our childhood came to an end.
So that quote "That's the kiss you give when it's over" was so familiar and was stuck in my head for days after first watching this video. I finally tracked down where it's from. Quality reference there
You should do the King of the Hill episode “Peggy Makes the Big Leagues.” It personally puts people on the side with Peggy because she has the moral high ground. Which is ironic because Peggy is often the least liked character in the show. Yet in that episode I was really sympathizing with her. You can also talk about how Hank really violated his own morals just because he had preferential treatment to a student athlete. Shady if you’re reading this…I hope you do this episode.
I love that scene in the diner with Trent and Daria. It perfectly tied everything up. The talk about the failed project felt like a metaphor for their hypothetical relationship - there's no way this coul have worked out. :)
So this is it: the episode we have to thank for Shady adding Daria to his schedule 😄😄😄 Thanks for the new Daria video Shady and hug your furbabies all 💙🐱💙 (14th!)
I think Tom would have had more benefit if he had been introduced earlier in the show (say the beginning or even the middle of Season 3) and that the audience got to know him better. He gets a lot of unnecessary hate in the fandom because they think he ruined two top ships (Daria/Trent and Daria/Jane) but his biggest problem was not being able to admit the truth to Jane about his feelings about both their relationship and towards Daria. It’s “easier” for Tom to get all the blame and conveniently forget about Jane and Daria also being at fault.
i love daria and grew up with the show, i just recently started rewatching it again and still absolutely love it, im at 11:54 where Tom is being rude back and you were saying i dont know why no one really sees her rudeness, but i think the whole idea of the show is about how she is just totally against the norm, like total teenage angst and is more intellectual than all of the lames in the world and that's why her and Jane become besties because Jane has the same disdain for everyone as daria and i think here she is just mad that her cool friend she can relate to is actually into a dumb guy, goin "gaga' over him but really failing to see that he is cool like the two of them , like teenage girls usually do. i love every bit of it! lol
I somehow completely forgot that they had Daria officially get over her crush on Trent in the exact episode that introduced Tom. No wonder the fans pushed back so hard so fast on that plot point... the writers weren't exactly subtle with where they wanted to go.
Oh please do the I Hate a Parade episode. I just watched all your Daria videos and you have great commentary that makes me enjoy the episodes more. I’ve watched the series 3-4 times, but never cared much for the first two seasons. Your coverage of Misery Chick was super interesting and insightful:)
Thank you for starting reviews. This is one of my top shows and to me as a Gen X this show is just all peak my generation. The sarcasm and her parents.
Tom really was a polarizing character, especially after he and Daria started dating. Personally, I always thought of him as an unnecessary third wheel that caused friction that didn't need to be there, like adding another second gear to your transmission, but that's just me.
It's no kidding about the algorithm being cruel to people. As of right now you are a channel I have to manually check up on to look for new episodes from. But hey, your quality is good enough that I remember to check in when I haven't seen anything for a while!
Want to make a second comment after finishing the video, thank you for your comments on introverts. It feels really good when someone talks about it seriously instead of just making jokes about it. Especially as it was on how difficult it is for us to make new friends
Ahhh! The clip of "It's Hard to be the Bard" from "Something Rotten!" I love you!! I mean I love your channel and your videos anyway but it was a treat seeing Shakespeare here!
Trent doesn’t like Daria the same way that Daria likes him. He’s an adult and he hints at that fact often, by bringing adult woman into his proximity in front of Daria. He lets her down low and slowly
I found your channel because of your Daria deep dives and i love it. I recently started a channel with my best friend and i currently edit and i now see exactly what you described about that balance between the creative wave and the deadline. One i had the hardest time with took me 8 months to come up with something i liked enough to post. I made myself get up loaded before the end of the year, and on 12/31 i finally posted. Anyway, looking forward to the rest of the series and checking out more of your videos.

It's really great to hear you explain your perspective on this show. You're very thoughtful about the emotional story playing out, very keen understanding of characters, and that's particularly tricky with a show that's subtle like this one. Thank you for sharing! It's not often I can find a youtuber that helps me better understand character writing!
A funny thing about deadlines in creative projects. while I almost never reach them myself, having one does tend to increase my productivity. Even after the date. So for some they can be a important creative tool, ESPECIALLY if your a perfectionist. As it becomes a new criteria you have to adhear to, keeping you from waffling on decisions that need to be made.
I really hope you review my favorite episode, Fizz Ed. Not being able to complain unless you make a genuine attempt to fix it is something I’ve tried to incorporate since hearing that.
17:17 😭 I've never felt so heard! My projects and tests always fall flat because I run out of time to do them properly! I can't even make amazing animations or art like I know I can because school put me in the mindset of rushing through them. Then again that could also be me not wanting to spend more than half an hour working on something that'll just be fed to the internet get a few comment notifications and never be seen again. Edit: after watching the rest of the video I can definitely say commitment is lost on me. I don't even finish watching the pile of long videos I have in the depths of my history....
Your commentary about deadlines (specifically referring to youtube) really hit home for me. I've been trying to do youtube for about 7 years, and i have periods where i can produce content rather quickly sometimes with multiple videos in a week (though admittedly i could learn a thing or two about summarization and editing because.......well let's just say it's a weak point); but there are also times where i feel completely at a loss and what i would normally be recording for content sake i end up "not" doing that because i just need to do it for the fun of it. It's impressive to me when some creators like yourself hit their stride and just make it work, and honestly I'm always happy for those types because they prove that this media has a lot of viable formats. Personally I guess i've not found that groove just yet (probably because my brain wants to try a little of everything), but even so I've stuck it out almost like a hobby rather than profession since it gives me an outlet to not only express myself but try to entertain others by showing myself doing what I enjoy. Again though the editing thing bites me in the backside because most of the time my stuff is WAY too long... in part because i've not quite hit that balance of "early credits" and "post credits". Truthfully it's very fitting that it's a Daria review that brought this topic up. When i was younger I didn't quite "get" some of the conversations of the series but I watched it on occasion and somewhat related to Daria thanks to her being somewhat a loner. Looking back I see way more to her than i did previously... that also means i see some of my own shortcomings but perhaps that's a good thing. It was worth the wait to see you cover a Daria related review since it gave so much to analyze and discuss (and yes I know you did one before but i forgot to watch it when it came out due to an influx of other content that made my brain go "ooh shiny"). Great job Shady, not just on this review but all of the ones i've seen of yours so far; you really bring a fresh self-analytical perspective to the content as both a professional and as a fan that I greatly appreciate & dare say admire.
I am in full agreement with you on this. In previous videos where you commented on Daria's behavior and ideology you obviously hadn't gotten to a point where you had seen pushback. Her receiving pushback is an important point, though earlier episodes set up who she is and what she believes, and that usually ended up with her being more intelligent than most others. Later in the series her viewpoints become challenged, and she grows as a character. I personally love how her relationship with Quinn evolves over the series.
If there's a Daria episode I want to see you talk about it would be the Season 5 episode Lucky Strike where Daria becomes a substitute teacher for Quinn's english class, granted it's the peak of Quinn's character development but it is one where the Principal Ms. Li gets most of what's coming to her
That was... really enjoyable. This is my first point of contact with this channel and I have to say, I like what I'm seeing. Hopefully the analysis of Daria episodes is part of an ongoing series that I can binge on but, even if not, I'm checking out the rest of the channel. Cheers from Romania.
I'm still a bit sad Trent X Daria never happened. I can see why it didn't though because it would have been cliche. It could also be the show trying to be realistic like just because a character has a crush on someone that doesn't mean they will end up together.
I think that scene in the diner perfectly tied everything up. The talk about the failed project felt like a metaphor for their hypothetical relationship - there's no way this coul have worked out. :)
That's what I've been waiting for!!! Lol glad you've been enjoying Daria I watched through the entire series like 2-3 years ago and really cool finding people still talking about an older series from the late 90s keep it up with the great content Shady
3:20 I wasn’t looking at the video when this happened, so the joke already caught me off guard. Then I came back to rewatch the video and burst out laughing; Timon and Pumbaa’s personalities would work surprisingly well with Daria and Jane’s.
This is a great episode and a great review of it. Once again, I really enjoyed your humor and your insight on these characters, their outlooks, and how they choose to interact with each other.
Ive always loved this show, I was once persuaded to buy a pirated version of the whole series that apparently was recorded with the original music, before their licensing expired. Aaah memories lol. Thank you for the video!!
Something this episode highlights that not many people notice is the fundamental difference between Daria and Jane: While Daria is very antisocial Jane is actually extremely social and very willing to put herself out there, and Daria often holds her back by being overtly judgemental which eventually starts putting strain on their relationship; instead most fans lump their hatred at Tom's feet, as if he's some kind of evil interlooper who knowingly set out to destroy their friendship, but he says it himself, he's just a guy who met a cool girl and dated her for a while until they started getting bored of each other.
Sounds awfully familiar...sigh...I won't get into it but I can see why a certain friend of mine loves this show as she's a real life Daria...and I'm more of a Jane...

Good job on explaining the introverts and the friendships they make and how hard it is to find a new friend after losing an old one.

There were two: Is It Fall Yet? and Is It College Yet? They're in the DVD set and probably can be watched online.
They were "Made for TV" movies on MTV. But yes they are considered movies due to the movie length runtime.
That probably explains a mystery I couldn't figure out. From what I understand, the box episode was the series finale, but I remember when I was a kid, I caught an episode of Daria at my cousin's house where she graduated high school.
They are good
Can't wait for you to cover the season 4 finale.
10:57 “Hey Daria did I _say_ I wanted to go see the movie with you?”

What awkwardness? He had an off and on girlfriend who had her own band? He was just hanging out with her and usually with Jane involved.

WAKE UP BABE A NEW DARIA REVIEW.
Wake up babe, DOORAGS IS DOING DARIA xD
Have you noted that Daria's love interest names start with 'T'? Trent, Ted (somewhat), and Tom.
Oh, these writers.

@@mesektet5776 Oh! I grew up in a particularly rough educational climate so it was never something I was made to read. I missed out on quite a bit of "required reading". I guess the joke had a wider audience than I realized.
@@YokaiEnthusiast that short story is quoted a lot. Used as an example.
Now we, as an audience, we are forced to acknowledge her autism

@@ShadyDoorags no doubt it was a potential foreshadow of their relationship, Tom was almost always considerate of Daria.

I never forgave Daria for getting with Tom.
i love daria and grew up with the show, i just recently started rewatching it again and still absolutely love it, im at 11:54 where Tom is being rude back and you were saying i dont know why no one really sees her rudeness, but i think the whole idea of the show is about how she is just totally against the norm, like total teenage angst and is more intellectual than all of the lames in the world and that's why her and Jane become besties because Jane has the same disdain for everyone as daria and i think here she is just mad that her cool friend she can relate to is actually into a dumb guy, goin "gaga' over him but really failing to see that he is cool like the two of them , like teenage girls usually do. i love every bit of it! lol

I love your Daria reviews. I also love your King of the Hill reviews as well. Could you review De-Khanstructing Henry S3 E13?
Daria is an amazing show. I’m glad you’re talking about it man. Keep up the great work and take care!
I'm a Shady man. I see a simple video, I click.
A 90s style joke for a 90s show.

😭 I've never felt so heard!
Daria's and Jane's completed project was hilarious
I love that the shark theme at 15:28 basically highlighted the envitable flux that occurs in Dye! Dye! My Darling
Also he's an adult while she's a teenager
"Life is unfair" "no one finds happiness" - the main ideas laid down by the creators of the show.
I think that scene in the diner perfectly tied everything up. The talk about the failed project felt like a metaphor for their hypothetical relationship - there's no way this coul have worked out. :)
No.....Trent has some issues..... wouldn't be healthy. Daria would eventually leave and become more pessimistic
No thanks...16 and 21 is weird
That's what I've been waiting for!!!
Lol glad you've been enjoying Daria I watched through the entire series like 2-3 years ago and really cool finding people still talking about an older series from the late 90s keep it up with the great content Shady
I literally just finished watching the show, and only did it after seeing your other Daria videos.
3:20 I wasn’t looking at the video when this happened, so the joke already caught me off guard.
Then I came back to rewatch the video and burst out laughing; Timon and Pumbaa’s personalities would work surprisingly well with Daria and Jane’s.
Man this episode is relatable. I'm in this situation myself.
God, I love this show! I love the subtle humor in shows like Daria, King of the Hill, Bojack Horseman, Mission Hill, Archer (kind of), etc.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wow the deadlines segment absolutely was a gutshot for me
This is a great episode and a great review of it. Once again, I really enjoyed your humor and your insight on these characters, their outlooks, and how they choose to interact with each other.
I just finished watching the other videos about Daria before I got the notification for this video.
Daria wiki actually does list the places Mystik Spiral plays and this one appears to be a place called The Zon. Which had me chuckling when I saw it
15:40 backhanded compliment
Ive always loved this show, I was once persuaded to buy a pirated version of the whole series that apparently was recorded with the original music, before their licensing expired. Aaah memories lol. Thank you for the video!!
As a teen and even as an adult, I related/relate a lot to Daria, but I also can and do relate to Jane, too.
So glad you are doing more, and it will be interesting to see which ones you choose to cover.
Shady, I don't know Daria, but I do know Burn Notice. Thank you for putting in a quote from such a great and underrated show in here. And keep up the good work, when I see one of your videos I can never click on it fast enough.
Omg , how does he go from Jane to Daria?! If there’s an episode for that please do a commentary on it 😮 the tea is hot
Plus the episode’s title cleverly plays on the name of a popular alternative rock band :) ✌️
The passive aggressive version of niceness is called "Texan" lol
Never watched an episode of Daria in my life. After this analysis - good lord that must have been a hell of a show!
Please make sure to watch the movies between seasons to see more of Jane and Daria’s ultimate reconciliation
Daria is a show that is both the exact product of it's time, and is timeless and still relatable to this day. More even with the vanity of today with social media and marketing taking over everything. It handled these topics, social issues, and deep relationship issues so well. I watched the show last year and was immediately drawn in despite being born in 2000.
Awww, I like you reviewing this series. But it makes more sense to have us watch the show
Why did I miss this? Shady reviewing Daria is my favorite thing to listen too
He roasted himself into Janes room and roasted Daria into her room
14:25 this. this right here. I can relate with this so much...I just suck with words, but this describes my social awkwardness so well.
Hoping for more Daria content. The fandom is small, but active and mentally unstable. Perfect for engagement ;)
I come back to your channel and see an Avatar and a Daria discussion episode? It must be my lucky day! Please do more of both of those shows!
