I really enjoyed this video,I remember years ago my late husband who was a tattooist/university engineering student really wanted a tattoo by Jack Rudy, he use to see his work in magazines and thought he was the best tattooist in the world.
Miss you lots "Get Down" Mike Brown..as he was affectionately known to his friends.. something many people don't know is he had a strange..to me..habit of jumping out of perfectly good airplanes..sometimes multiple times in a day..his absolute #1 pleasure after he got clean..RIP Mikey
The first tat I got was from here during a vacation I took with my cousin. Had it done on a spot with a pretty nice sunburn and it came out excellent. Shoutout to patty boy! 🤙
I just got a tattoo done at Slarry Jerry's and I didn't even know the history. Best experience so far getting a tattoo done great people in the shop too. Meat a old timer there he had great stories about jerry.
Old skool tattoos are still going Oliver peck is amazing these guys are gods of the tattoo world sailor jerry and Mahoney gangster grey super cool old skool artists I love old style tattoos the older they look the better like my grandads tats are amazing
@@moodfm5673 The correct spelling of "Old School" in tattooing was always "old skool" in the magazines and whatnot (although it fell out of favor in the late 00's) and "new school" was spelled "Nu-Skool" (like nu-metal). I see what you're saying and agree, but there's a chance this guy has been around tattooing long enough to remember the original spelling, which is awesome and should be celebrated. If he is a kid, I'm just glad he appreciates REAL tattooing, there are enough art school dropouts doing hand poked micro tattoos.
Wow and i thought tattoos were getting better now days, and i thought that all the tattoos iv'e seen on old folks were crappy because it wasn't as evolved back then but i guess these dudes were very few good tattoo artist from back in the days. Dope ink work!
There's something about contemporary artists that shouldn't be mixed with art (google Richard Serra or Damien Hirst); tattoo, though, is a great form of visual art.
damn I remember when I went into mikes guys shop when i first moved to hawaii, with absolutely no idea who he was, and asked for a quote for a tatt and he said something ridiculous LIKE 300 for lettering on my arm, I thought he was crazy, now that I see his history i understand why he charges what he does lol
As much as I appreciate seeing my home state represented on Vice or youtube for the world to see, all that beach-y, ukelele, luau and roast pork shit is totally out of the loop and not what we see, experience, or prefer on a regular basis. I know it makes for good material and b-roll, ok, but just know this isn't common stuff for anyone besides tourists here lol

I find that hard to believe considering you called it a tattoo gun. If you really had a original sailor Jerry machine I think you’d know it’s worth and that it’s not a gun.
Scaring the skin is the oldest form of "permanent" expression that we still pratice today, sorry...pre historic mummies have been found with them and neanderthals were found with evidence of artistic scaring perhaps rhythm predates tattooing but not "music" and tonality. Music is different from simply. I think the understanding that a scar is permanent would have been one of the first things early man would have understood and therefore scaring probably happened before other mediums.

To all you documentarians out there.... don’t put yourself in your film. This isnt a documentary about you,,nobody wants to see you,...nobody cares about you we care about the person you’re doing a documentary about. It’s not even a documentary about sailor Jerry.
My only tattoo was a $12 ($15 w/tip) given to me by Sailor Jerry in Apr. ‘73. Maybe one of the last he ever did b4 passing.
Legendary 🔥
Thats wild man
i got a tattoo from Mike back in '98. Mad respect to him and all the old skoolers out there still inkin.
What a great interview. The interviewer made Mike feel comfortable and he just let him talk. Perfectly done.

Great video. I would of loved tattoo work done by Mike Brown! Nice work
I think he passed away a while ago
And Vice pwns my ass by having a narrator that agrees with me 100% and filming in shady Chinatown within the first 2 minutes. Awesome!
I like the Bill W. necklace
R.I.P Mike brown.
I got my first tattoo at skin deep while in the Coast Guard in Hawaii over 30 years ago. Doesn't seem like the shop has changed in all the time.

If he died in 1973 how is there a photo of him with the tag (2008) over it.
