Not being from Texas or the valley belt, it’s genuinely fascinating, as an outsider looking in, viewing this world. This regional, language based culture and stardom.
I imagine it’s kind of like, Quebec and the rest of Canada. Quebec has its own language, its own tv shows, it’s own stars and culture. And unless you’re tuned into it, you would have no idea, and could be living just across the river from the province.
This was a great interview. Was nice seeing him totally comfortable and confident in this kind of setting.
Would love to know more about the drama, and his broke years lol.

Two things Carlos has to understand about the N-word:
1. Kids using denigrating comments to one another in the school yard in ignorance, without understanding its meaning, history and impact, is not justification to use that language as an adult.
2. There is no other word, in any other culture that can be used against any ethnicity or nationality that holds the same power and historical impact as the N-word in America.
There are other derogatory ethnic slurs that have fallen out of use, but they have not been re-claimed in popular culture by the targeted ethnicity. So it's complex, and part of the power of reclaiming it is the fact that black people alone can use it, and nobody else.
For me growing up in the urban east coast, it was a term of endearment to anyone. And everyone could say it and no one got mad. It's still strange to me that it's offensive now. In the east coast it's about the context of how you say it, and whether it's with the er or not.

Don't remember. It was Selena's dad who saw him perform the joke and got him banned from Laredo for a few years.
