    Just doesn't make sense how Bubbles gets to keep her stuffed octopus Octi yet Buttercup doesn't get to keep her blanket. Double standard. smh

      That's so true! He saw how happy Buttercup was to find her blanket, so clearly he knows that it means something to her. And he had to have seen the looks on Blossom and Bubbles's faces, looks that could only be to pressure Buttercup into giving up her blanket. How any parent could be okay with that I'll never understand.

      Poor kid probably just wants to be noticed and loved like Blossom and Bubbles are, but never really gets any individual attention unless she's in trouble or doing something wrong. Hard to blame her for wanting to lash-out...
      The more I think about it, the more it solidifies in my mind that Buttercup was/is the "Proto-Meg Griffin;" the show certainly seems to hate her enough...

      Joe Segal also for the fact she teases or bullies Bubbles, because as much as she seems innocent, but she's still mean and spoiled enough to get away with everything because of her cuteness, naturally she would give her a beating for that.

    I have a feeling that Blossom doesn't really like security objects in general because besides from Buttercup's blanket, someone pointed out in a later episode, Octi Gone where Bubbles loses Octi and suspects her sisters, a flashback shows Blossom telling her that Bubbles only wants Octi because she's insecure and needs to grow up when they're only 5
    Also if you look closer, when Blossom and Bubbles dragged Buttercup away to help them fight crime, Bubbles had a sympathetic look on her face, so you can kinda say that she did feel somewhat bad for Buttercup
    Also I agree with Bubbles getting away with too much. As much as I love Bubbles, her cuteness shouldn't be an excuse to let her get away with everything
    Edit: I just realised that Blossom does have a security object: Her bow, which make her a more of a hypocrite in this episode because I heard from a comic that she'll go crazy or something without it

    • @yanrokbowl28
      @yanrokbowl28 11 месяцев назад +2

      OK, this is going to be a long day explaining this...
      Blossom doesn't necessarily hate security objects, and as you acknowledged, she does have her own, and she doesn't react that much differently than her sisters do when they find each other with a security object.
      Blossom told Bubbles to grow up, because Bubbles was using her "needing" Octi as an excuse for herself to search for him, while inconsiderately keeping Blossom up with the noise Bubbles made. Coupled with sleep-depravation and impatience, it's implied that this has happened multiple times, and Blossom had to deal with it every time, and in the flashback, she had reached her breaking point. I see more people willing to harsh on Blossom's rant, yet Buttercup's threat to rip Octi into shreds just gets swept under the rug. And Buttercup had just as much reason to be annoyed with Bubbles.
      Blossom and Bubbles didn't really make fun of Buttercup for _having_ her blanket, they made fun of her whole "It gives me the strength to be a great fighter!" statement, because they knew she didn't really need it to fight.
      The worst they do was get annoyed at Buttercup at the end, with Buttercup still trying to act like she still "needed her blanket to fight", when the untold truth was that Buttercup loved having a blanket like any normal person loves having something of their to hold dear.
      When Blossom panicked about her bow being knocked off her head, her sisters were annoyed, then they exploit it for their own fun. with Bubbles making fun of Blossom for needing her bow, and Buttercup stealing her bow the next day, and barely anyone stepped in to intervene during that time. Take in the fact that Blossom was BORN with her bow on her head, so she has some justification for panicking when someone knocks it off her head, or harms it. It's practically a birthright that she wears.
      Haters can say what they will about Blossom, but at least _she_ never stole either of her sisters' security objects from them, nor did she made fun of her sisters when their special possessions were lost.

    • @yogalover2753

      @yanrokbowl28 Yeah, but Blossom could have helped Bubbles look for Octi in that episode so that she could get some sleep. Also, in this episode Blossom and Bubbles could have just told Buttercup that it wasn't the blanket itself that was helping her fight, it was the confidence boost that she got from having the blanket and from doing the affirmations. Instead, they started laughing at her, and that was really uncalled for because they should have been supporting her.

  • @warioland523

    I can actually see a sequel to this episode where Buttercup starts to doubt herself again because she no longer has her blanket and a bad guy gets the upper hand against her. The girls save Buttercup but she's injured. The professor sees this and he has a "My goodness. What have I done?" moment.

  • @1992holycrap

    The more I think about it, the more I agree that episode should've been structured a bit more like "The Mane Event." Not only would Buttercup finally get a heartwarming moment with the Professor, confirming to the audience that he actually does love his daughter, but the potential ways she could've used her blanket to beat the monster would've made for a more clever action scene than the one we got.
    For example: maybe Buttercup pieces together that the monster of the episode was singling-her-out because it hates the color green like a bull hates red while she's sulking and re-enters the fight dressed like a bull-fighter, using her blanket as the cape to lure the monster into a trap. This would not only be an interesting and unique way for Buttercup to use her blanket to save the day, it would also show that she is capable of coming-up with an actual thinking plan and that she isn't just the brainless brute most people think she is.

    I thought that Blossom and Bubbles wanted to teach Buttercup that she doesn't need her blanket to be confident and they are mad at her that she doesn't overcome her attachment. And the ending with the professor and narrator makes me chuckle. But otherwise, the episode was poorly executed with its message and the double standard when comparing Buttercup's treatment to Bubbles cannot be overlooked.

    • @Umbra_Magna777
      @Umbra_Magna777  6 лет назад +6

      I think that was what they were going for, but they didn't have to take away the blanket completely. Some people need comfort objects to help them feel better. I'll admit I use them sometimes (I'm on the autism spectrum and I get really bad anxiety sometimes), and they help me tremendously. You just can't force someone to give up something like that unless they have some kind of hoarding problem or something. If Buttercup had to give up her blanket, she would do it when she's ready. But nobody should be forced to give up something they love.

    This episode was so messed up! So I feel like everyone’s favorite powerpuff girl is Bubbles including the writer’s and everyone’s least favorite is Buttercup including the writers. For me it’s the other way around. I feel like Buttercup can be sympathetic she can be much but I love her attitude. Bubbles on the other hand is spoiled, she doesn’t even get a consequence. Although Bubbles is the youngest she is still the same age as Buttercup! The writers are making Bubbles look like the toughest fighter and making Buttercup look weak even though it says in the intro that Buttercup is the toughest! There needs to be a documentary or a movie about Buttercup’s life and ending with actual father-daughter moment from the professor. I can’t watch the reboot knowing that there will be favoritism for Bubbles and against Buttercup. They can still have Bubbles moments but at least even it out with Buttercup moments and give buttercup good some good endings and Bubbles needs some bad endings to balance things out. Also I want Buttercup to get a special power other than curling her tongue. 😢

    Considering how she's treated in this episode, "Moral Decay," many of her other focus episodes, and just in-general, methinks Buttercup's in desperate need of a new family, if not a whole new town...
    Does anyone else think she would've been much happier if she'd simply stayed with her sensei from "Makes Zen to Me?"...

  • @warioland523
    @warioland523 5 лет назад +9

    I feel kind of sorry for her to be honest. I know that they probably don't have many episodes focusing on her insecurities probably to maintain her tough image. The closest thing to someone being there for Buttercup to help overcome an insecurity or fear was from the nightmare episode where it's revealed she is scared of spiders and Blossom if I recall actually helps her overcome it. Bubbles is scared of dolls I think. And Blossom is scared of getting bad grades because she is the brains of the group.

    Yeah, I wasn’t a big fan of this episode and “Moral Decay” because, like you, I was a huge fan of Buttercup and still am. The episode could’ve been a lot better if there was a moment with the Professor and Buttercup. However, I think the thing to remember with kid shows especially ones that are episodic like The Powerpuff Girls is that the story always kind of “resets” at the end of the episode, so the story won’t necessarily have an effect on the next episode. And maybe the writers at the time weren’t intending for it to be taken as deep as a lot of fans take it. Don’t get wrong, I agree that this episode isn’t executed correctly, but with that in mind, I think it makes it easier to essentially pretend it never happened or that the Professor eventually gave the blanket back to Buttercup. Plus I think she eventually finds it again in a later episode.

    "Imagine how people would react to Bubbles being forced to give up Octi".

      Umbra Magna this attitude reminds me of how they treat a majority of the mane six in FiM. When they do something wrong, they get told off, but when 'sweet and kind and cute' Fluttershy does something criminal she gets off Scott free. So any crying scene she has we get to pity her. Frankly I'm becoming very wary of fanbases with 'cute and sweet' childlike characters. Another example is Butters from South Park. Even if I do like Butters, the fanbase writes off his wrong deeds as 'he's innocent and didn't know any better.' And if you say you don't like him, the South Park fanbase gets triggered. No Butters is no better then Kenny (Kenny's my fave South Park boy) when he goes along with Cartman's schemes. In fact I don't really hate any of the boys in that show. People just need to be aware NONE of the boys are saints.

      Kristie Kat - Couldn't agree more about Fluttershy. So many bronies and pegasisters put her on such a ridiculously high pedestal as this "perfect little angel" who can do no wrong when really all she does most of the time is serve as eye candy for the audience to fawn over how adorable she is.

      I don't really watch MLP to be honest, but I can definitely understand the situation with Fluttershy. It's all these so-called "cute" characters that hypnotize people into justifying their every little action, regardless of how heinously cruel or asinine they may be.

    @xavierkrantz1098 5 лет назад +7

    Ok, yeah when I was a kid, blossom was my favorite character, but after watching your top 12 worst power puff girls episodes, I had to change my mind. In the episode moral decay, I know buttercup is the aggressive one, but she would NEVER, NEVER go so far as to beat people up for teeth. And to be honest, buttercups punishment in moral decay is just too much. I get that they were trying to teach her a lesson, but this is not how you do it to a 5 year old, or six if she has a late birthday. And especially at the fact that the professor never shows any concern that buttercup got beaten up seriously. I know buttercup can be a bit of a psychopath sometimes, but at least she could see WHAT SHES BECOME. Also, the professor never shows any love or courage to buttercup. He doesn’t even say “I love you”, to her. Would’ve have killed him, too just say that one time, or or even twice or thrice? It’s like with Meg from Family Guy, pretty much everybody in the family values meg griffin the least.
    With Cover Up, I think the writers have gone too far. First off, why would bubbles and blossom, get mad at buttercup for having a blanket? And the fact, that blossom and bubbles laughed at buttercup about the blanket just makes even worse, because the episode excepts us to laugh with them and get mad at buttercup for having a blanket too. You know, if Bubbles at least show some compassion for buttercup about the blanket, the episode would have been much better. Also am I the only one who thinks it’s heartless to have buttercup get punished for doing nothing wrong? Yeah, not only is it heartless, but I literally got sad and cried, and not to mention got angry at Bubbles and Blossom. I really hate it when fans of bubbles value buttercup the least of three girls. It’s really heart braking and I can understand how that feels when you feel or been rejected. I think buttercup needs to have the same standard as blossom, then relationship between the sisters would’ve been much better.

    The only thing I like about this episode is that adds more depth to Buttercup. It shows that she does have a vulnerable side and she doesn't have as much confidence as everyone thinks she does. And it also shows that she's not all that tough deep down. Other than that, this is still a bad episode.

  • @jankokol9817
    @jankokol9817 11 месяцев назад +9

    This episode made me remember the episode "Mommy Fearest" where the Professor falls in love with a pretty woman and decides to let her live with him and the girls. The woman becomes more and more antagonistic against them; while regulalry claiming that it would be for the girls' best interest.
    One example is when the girls get ready to bed and the woman takes Octi from Bubbles, saying "And growing girls don't play with STUPID dolls". Of course, Bubbles starts crying. I immediately felt bad for Bubbles and despised the woman for that.
    However, when Buttercup lost her blanket in this episode (I first thought that someone might have stolen it), the writers expected us to feel the exact opposite of how we felt towards Bubbles for her experiencing the same sadness for losing her favourite toy as Buttercup did when losing her blanket.
    The writers of the show treat Bubbles and Buttercup just like how the screeenwriter of Harry Potter treats Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger - strong favouritism towards one and blattant disregard towards of the other.

    Buttercup: It's my blanket! *It gives me the strength to be a great fighter!*
    _(Bubbles and Blossom giggle)_
    Buttercup: What? What's so funny?!
    Blossom: That's ridiculous! *You don't need a stinky old blanket to fight!*
    I think *Cover Up* is a prime example of getting the message muddled at the end. Because I actually understand the _thesis_ of what they were trying to say. Buttercup having a comfort object was never supposed to be the problem. That's not why Blossom and Bubbles laughed. The problem was the superstitious belief that the blanket made her a strong fighter when she already _was_ a strong fighter. And this belief actually hindered her from responding appropriately to the hotline/solving crime, spending undue amounts of time in the closet, murmuring these affirmations to herself.
    This actually _did_ create a problem. An *intervention* was in fact necessary. So Blossom's _intentions_ were correct, but her _method_ was wrong. And it was _especially_ wrong to _force_ Buttercup to give up the blanket cold turkey like that. Especially when it _is_ her blanket. The Professor absolutely should've have gotten involved and he should've explained things gently to Buttercup, letting her gradually wean off of her attachment at her own pace. These things take time.

    • @Umbra_Magna777
      @Umbra_Magna777  4 года назад +2

      I don’t think her problem was necessarily being attached to the blanket. The problem was more that she believed she had to have it at all times to be a good fighter. I think the episode could have been better if she were able to learn how to fight without her blanket, but still keep it for when she was at home (like Bubbles does with Octi). You do have a good point, though. I can see how this episode could have been good, but the message was definitely misconstrued.

    • @rhondahoward8025
      @rhondahoward8025 4 года назад +1

      @@Umbra_Magna777 Yep, that's basically it. Honestly, the set up for the episode was just fine. There's a genuine conflict and a genuine problem that requires intervention on Buttercup's behalf. Blossom goes about it the wrong way and the first mistake was not calling her out on this, especially when Buttercup gets pretty hurt trying to fight the monster without the confidence boost of her blanket.
      The Professor's interference was quite necessary and the episode does suffer without his parental guidance.

    Honestly, this episode is more about luck superstitious.
    Blossom & Bubbles weren't laughing at Buttercup because she's attached to a blanket, they just thought it was ridiculous for Buttercup to have a lucky charm to help her fight when she's already a strong fighter.
    But if you want a better episode of Buttercup being addictive to something:
    There is a PPG comic story about Buttercup being addicted to garlic, up to a point where she starts craving for more like potato chips.

    • @1992holycrap

      +Keshia Anders
      While that may have been the *intent*, which is rarely ever applicable to the final product, it isn't conveyed well in the execution and makes it seem a lot more like a little kid getting picked-on for having a security blanket.
      While that sounds a bit better than what we got, didn't they do a similar thing in the episode "Candy is Dandy?"

      Josh Montemayor That's exactly what the episode wants you to think! I'm sure Bubbles would've reacted the same way if she had lost Octi. The difference is that the show would've justified Bubbles's behavior instead of making her look like a crazy little girl having a temper tantrum.

    • @HackiePuffs
      @HackiePuffs 6 лет назад +6

      Umbra Magna I don’t really think Bubbles is to blame. Okay I’ll admit that it’s partially because she’s my favorite character but I think it’s more of the Professor and Blossom’s fault for doing that. I’m actually thinking of making an animated series when I have the right amount of experience to upload it to RUclips. And one of the episodes is of Bubbles realizing that the way Buttercup feels about her blanket is like how she feels about Octi so when the others aren’t looking she secretly gets the blanket and gives it back to Buttercup. It’s not gonna be the main focus of the episode but I still decided to add it in.

    • @Umbra_Magna777
      @Umbra_Magna777  6 лет назад +4

      That is a great idea! I would love to see something like that! I can definitely see Bubbles connecting with Buttercup in this way, and it makes it all the more confusing why she would tease Buttercup for having a blanket. I guess you could argue that it's to get back at Buttercup for all the times she teased Bubbles, but even if that's the case, laughing at her just seems malicious.
      And yes, I agree that both Blossom and the Professor played a major part in this. To be fair, I don't think Blossom understands as well as Bubbles what a comfort object can do to help; in fact, I don't recall Blossom ever sleeping with a stuffed toy (correct me if I'm wrong). However, she had to have known the blanket meant something to Buttercup, otherwise she wouldn't have tried so hard to hide it from them or cried when she lost it. And Professor is certainly culpable in this case. How could he not see that his own daughter would need something to make her feel better? Buttercup may be the tough one, but even tough girls cry sometimes, and sometimes sensory objects like a soft blanket can help you feel better.

    • @HackiePuffs
      @HackiePuffs 6 лет назад +3

      Umbra Magna yeah I think Blossom has a thing against comfort objects. Not just Buttercup’s blanket. Because in Octi Gone one of the flashbacks showed Blossom shaming Bubbles for having Octi. And she said for Bubbles to grow up. I was like “So what are you trying to say?” That having a comfort object to help you feel better is childish? Bubbles is scared of the dark and without Octi she would have a hard time sleeping. So she would basically rather have Bubbles be scared for the night so Blossom could sleep. But she really didn’t have to wait for Bubbles she could’ve just did what Buttercup was doing which was go to sleep. That’s really what inspired that storyline in the first place I was just so mad at Blossom.

    Yeah, the series double standards towards bubbles is pretty annoying. Just because she's cute doesn't mean she can get away with most stuff (she used to be my fave ppg, now it's Blossom. I still like her though).
    PS: The way you sometimes feel about Bubbles reminds me feel the same way about Dee Dee from Dexter's lab (Dexter is my all time fave CN character) at times. I get that Dee Dee just wants Dexter to have fun in a more sociable way, but the way she belittles him, calls him 'weirdo' and constantly wrecks his stuff and gets away with it at times leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Yes I am aware Dexter can be a jerk and arrogant but at least when he does something wrong, he gets punished (in some eps by his parents) and has karma biting him in the back. Dee Dee often gets off scott free and have most of the luck because she's 'sweet and fun loving'. Yeah, even when she acts like a jerk and wrecks her brother's stuff and disrespects his privacy, she's 'cute and sweet'. -_-

    • @Umbra_Magna777
      @Umbra_Magna777  6 лет назад +3

      Oh my gosh, I totally agree! Dee Dee was so annoying!

    • @christabelk16
      @christabelk16 6 лет назад +2

      Umbra Magna She really was even if I don't completely hate her or don't like her either. And funny enough many compare her to Bubbles. Both have blonde pigtails, love ponies and cute things and (this next one is my opinion) are favoured by their universes while their sibling/s get punished (and I think Dexter is a lot more adorable than Dee Dee the way you think Buttercup is the cutest). While Dee Dee had her moments of kindness, the number of times she gave her little brother Hell (especially when he wasnt doing anything wrong in certain episodes) made the world turn upside down in her favour for no reason outweighed her kind parts (watch the episode Golden Diskette. She had no reason to ruin her brother's trip to Prof Hawk's factory). So I'd say this:
      Bubbles >> Dee Dee. At least Bubbles kind and cute moments outweighed her annoying ones.

      @Umbra_Magna777  6 лет назад +5

      It's funny you should mention that, because I've been thinking about how Blossom seems to favor Bubbles over Buttercup, especially when Bubbles and Buttercup are arguing. The Professor does this as well, but to a lesser degree.

    • @HackiePuffs
      @HackiePuffs 6 лет назад +6

      Umbra Magna it seems like Buttercup is just trying to connect with Bubbles but in a different way than what Bubbles is used to. Like take Sweet N Sour for example. Buttercup pounced on the stuffed animals and Bubbles freaked out. But I don’t think she realized that that was just Buttercup’s way of playing and she was trying to play with Bubbles. I actually realized this after I had a teacher who liked to tease me but she always did that to the students she liked. That’s what made me realize that Buttercup teases Bubbles in a playful way and it’s all in good fun. Yet Blossom shames Buttercup for it. And not in a “don’t play rough” way. She actually snaps “Cool it!” At Buttercup. Jeez woman let them work this out. I feel like Buttercup has a closer connection to Bubbles too. As she and Blossom always butt heads but not really with Bubbles. In fact there are a few times where Bubbles plays along with Buttercup. I just wish that Bubbles was able to see that and possibly build up their connection.

      I know what you mean. I've seen a bunch of nasty comments about people who like Severus Snape from Harry Potter, and he's definitely a controversial character to say the least. He's my favorite character in the series, and while he's not perfect by any means, I prefer him over James and Lily Potter, who are very loved characters that did bad things that almost none of the fans want to talk about. This definitely applies to the PPG fandom as well. If you dislike Bubbles, you are automatically seen as a horrible person. It's very unfortunate that people can be blinded from someone's bad deeds by their "cute" redeeming qualities. Same with Blossom. She's smart and (sometimes) a good leader, but she's also self-righteous and she has a HUGE superiority complex. Buttercup can be aggressive and impulsive sometimes, but she also cares deeply for her sisters and saves them on multiple occasions. She even has some really good ideas from time to time. Each of the characters has both flaws and good qualities.

      Umbra Magna I love Bubbles But you’re right she should’ve been punished for some of the stuff she did do. This is how I feel about Nikita in the RUclips original series Escape The Night. While some people were most likely to stick out Ro as the one who gets away with everything I feel like it should’ve been Nikita. She was always so salty to the team. She got moody when someone voted her into the death challenge even though it was gonna happen to her eventually. She caused fights in the group when they were supposed to be working together. But some people always defend her and say she’s justified in doing that simply because she’s titled “the troublemaker”. But everyone else is dressed as a persona like Safiya is dressed as an investigative reporter, MatPat is dressed as a detective and Ro is dressed as a Jet Setter but really the only thing Ro does that relates to her character is before they realize they’re in danger when they’re meeting Calliope one of their helpers. Other than that no one really cares about their roles. I will admit that some of her lines did make me crack a smile here and there like when she said “nighty night bitch” to the evil doll in episode 6 but I just don’t like her that much. And also like Buttercup the characters attack another character that I like in the series. Teala. She was trying her best but most of the characters still attack her and say things like “Teala pick the damn tile” and “how is she still alive”. And when she does get killed off no one even acknowledges it. I think that’s a reason why people stick out Ro as the one who gets away with everything but all she did was manage to find all of her letters that spell out the name of the man with no name (it’s Benjamin if you were curious) before Teala did. And when she recovered the blood gem she tried to let Teala know so they could escape together. As excited as I was that Ro made it I was still upset that no one even cared about Teala except Ro. And in the final episode there’s a comment made by MatPat referring back to the game of Jenga they played where he said “which too long Teala pick a block and stick with it” even after she died.
