@EntityXeno never heard the word used to describe Hurricane Helene.. It's a West Coast thing. Instead of saying a Typhoon, Hurricane, or a Super Cell, it's a Bomb of a Storm. Looking at the radar imagery, I would say it's a low level Hurricane.

We had one of those come through Colorado several years ago. It did a lot of damage. Lost power, knocked down trees, and the snow blizzard was so fierce that you couldn't make out the houses across the street. There were several deaths also, but didn't get the media coverage that this one is getting.
I have cousins with families who've lived there for about 25 - 30 years or so. They say it's pretty much like any other early winter storms they've had in that time. Lot's of wind and rain. Trees down, some flooding.

Living in Oregon and it's been a really beautiful long fall this year. One of the mildest I have ever experienced. Beautiful, overcast and no wind here today. I'm not sure where the News is getting their footage.

In the interior of Alaska we are having unseasonably warm temperatures with sleet instead of snow. Usually it’s below zero…but now it’s much higher . I have never seen such strange weather in the more than 30 years that I have lived here. It rained most of the summer night and day. It is usually hot and dry in this area!
Having been present for the Columbus Day Storm, the Snows and Ice Storms of the late 1960's, the flooding of the mid 60's, I have to say this is actually not quite so impressive.
I’m in Spokane and we just got a little rain ! I’m actually trying to move over to the west side but maybe I should stick it out here in Spokane it’s so much drier
Used to be that only hardy folk lived next to the sea and in the mountains. They accepted and lived with both the beauty and the ugly that mother nature gifted them. Where did those people go?
Accidents & fatalities are biggest worries in natural disasters like this. Next is economic, monetary, social & health loss. Next is disturb in daily routine or life. Next is illness or spread of infectious diseases.State should help victims all the way
A cyclone is more than just rain. A bomb cyclone shows up out of seemingly nowhere. Like tornados around here. One minute rain, next minute hail and then tornado. Within minutes of each other. Except bomb cyclones don't give even that much warning.
May they be treated better than Tennessee in North Carolina who are still waiting for help. If it weren’t for a good hearted, citizens and Christian groups, they’d be abandoned.
It's NOT a "bomb" and we should not be using hyperbolic language like that to describe weather.
That's the official term for this weather event..
All the same the previous correct designation was air burst.

I’ve never heard of this ‘bomb cyclone’. I’m sick of media making up new stupid terms for weather to sensationalize crap.
According to NOAA, a bomb cyclone “is represented by a drop in millibars, a measurement of pressure used in meteorology.
Also, it's not unusual for but unusual for wintertime.

The term "bomb cyclone" has been around since the 1940's so it's not "new" at all, just bc YOU haven't heard it before.
