After nearly 60 yrs. they are ending their all news broadcast and ESPN will be taking over to be an all sports station. They will be WHSQ-AM. This will leave WINS news on 1010 AM and Bloomberg radio at 1130 AM . I remember we always had this station on back in the 60's when we were getting ready for school and my parents for work. They are trying to kill off AM like they are shortwave. Sad times.

I agree they trying to get rid of AM and shortwave because they want to please the younger generation and the young generation listens to FM HD and online digital. It's bad enough they took analog TV away. Please leave AM and shortwave radio alone!

@@chriswideman1218I am 33 years old and I want AM radio stations back 😢
Not Just the nostalgic of listening to music with AM Radio sound, but also because I live far from the downtown and FM radio can't come over. 😢

I'm 61 and can well remember when AM was the only game in town. FM was nothing more than a curiosity. If there'd been AM stereo starting in the mid-70s (when FM was starting to play music), no telling how many AMs would still be playing music.

El cierre de WCBS 88 es muy triste para la ciudad de Nueva York y la radiodifusión de radio en general.

I hope this soon-to-be historical radio piece stays. WCBS has a great history and the outreach the station had for decades. Unfortunately, the AM radio broadcast future is bleak.

Yes, in addition to WCBS, two other NYC AM stations that I really liked (WHN and WNBC) went to that great transmitter in the sky.

I remember loosing KQV here in Pittsburgh a few years back. "You give us 20 minutes, we'll give you the world".

    • @TheBrooklynbodine
      @TheBrooklynbodine 14 дней назад

Yes. They were one of the premier Top 40 stations. That era ran from 1958-75. I'm from Fairmont, West Virginia. The way I learned that KQV went all-news was in the summer of '76, when I turned on the car radio and tuned in 1410 (this was at Kennywood Park) and no music issued forth. 13Q did KQV in. KQV went to an all-news format on October 15, 1975 (49 years ago today).

Yes, we have WBBM 780 in Chicago. It’s a power house of a station, and love tuning in for weather and news. I listen to in Colorado when visiting family, that good of signal.

I can't pull WCBS out of the pile-up - however, I've been trying every night the last week. I'm getting a fairly strong Mexican station at 880 - using a CCRane Skywave SSB with the stock antenna.

AM Radio is still a thing down here in Mexico. Alas, the Mexican governament thinks it's "obsolete" and forced migration of AM Radio stations towards FM, which caused that rural villages and suburbs ended up isolated. 😢
Why? Unlike USA the flat land, Mexico is mostly mountainous, and only AM radio (longwave and midwave) is able to deal with the Mexican geography. 😅
Also, when there are hurricanes, AM Radio gets a clearer signal thanks to clouds, unlike FM radio. And, at nights, with a homemade modified antenna, I'm able to get AM radio stations from USA, Canada, northern Mexico, and even Caribbean islands. ❤
      Greetings from Oaxaca City. 😊

@@Xicohtencatl_Xayacate Thanks for replying - please subscribe! I love AM radio and go out frequently at night to search the airwaves. We get a lot of Mexican stations here in NW Louisiana. We're slowly learning Spanish so we can listen/understand the radio more and talk with the Mexican population here.

It's only been a few days but sometimes that was so instrumental to the news and information to millions of people, was just gone. It's a mayor loss. To be replaced by a sport station. WFAN is the best in the country. Why more sports ? Money is on top of these corporations. It's not about the people anymore, and those who are affected. This country has turned into what's in the pocket. As for me I wont be tuning to those stations. Will live but we won't forget and lay money in the pockets of those who don't care. 😢

Exactly as in Mexico. Here in Mexico AM Radio stations are disappearing...
The difference is that they are necessary as they can cover up a whole state territory, and Mexico is highly mountainous. 😢
