Soaps were so ahead of their time. Black cast members were main characters. There were interracial relationships. First kiss between a black and white character. Gay relationships. Suicide. Things that weren’t seen until years later on network television. And the grueling work schedules. Five shows a week, 52 weeks a year. Fine acting. My favorite was Another World, shot in Brooklyn. So many fine stage actors in roles between stage roles. Even more fun when they popped up on episodes of Law & Order. I never was a fan of the evil genius kidnapping characters to his remote islands, but I do miss the soaps that are now gone. I know I sound pathetic, but the Cory’s, the McKinnons. the Love, Felicia, Cass; they were like family.
I agree with you. There was something very special about the East Coast soaps too. I didn't start watching AW until Vicky Hudson days with Anne Heche, but it was head and shoulders above other shows of the time. I am having fun seeing these episodes with people who were name dropped often in the late 80s-90s though.
I remember watching this with my grandmother in the 80s and loved it. It would come on right after I got home from elementary school. Glad to see other fans of the series out there. 1980s to 1990s is the era I am most familiar with. :)
I started watching Another World with my mom back in the late 70s. I'd just finished college and was trying to find a full-time teaching job. When I could, I'd stop by and my mom would make a cup of instant coffee and we'd watch this show together. Life was so simple then! I'll be 70 years old soon and can't tell you how much I'm enjoying all these familiar shows. It's almost like going home again. Even a cup of instant coffee sounds good to this old coffee snob! Thank you so much for sharing these. They are a precious and rare treat! Kind regards❤
The scene of Rachel, Amanda, and Mac talking sailing was precious. I watched Another World with my Granny, but I was born in 80. My earliest memories of the show are from the later 80s, so this is so fun to see. I loved seeing Ada again. These characters were Granny's family and she always spoke of them as such.

Yes, we were very blessed. In my life time I had 2 sets of grandparents and a great grandmother. They are all gone now. The last one that passed away lived to be 102 years old and with a sharp mind. She used to tell me that she was ready to go, but she felt the pull of her children. I told her that I could not help her with this and that she need to talk with Jesus. Yes, we were very blessed both sets were very big on family, extremely close!
Wow...these episodes are incredible. It's hard to believe the 1980 - 1981 dropped nearly 2 ratings points (departure of Beverlee Mc Kinsey and change of time slot from 2:30 - 4:00 to 2:00 - 3:00) with such good writing and developed characters. Also hard to believe is what the show would go through in the next few years.
@@Chase4everChase Absolutely. The network seemed to lose faith in the show and allowed it to flounder much to the frustration of loyal viewers (and at least one lead actress).
I would have to agree with Richard here and it's amazing when I am looking at the end credits to see all these familiar names. Like Bob Calhoun or Tom king. Or Susan Keith who a few years later would go to loving and meet her husband James kibbard. And they all have connections to Paul Rauch or harding Lemay or even Doug Marland.
@@richardlee2642and Richard after reading some of your other posts about bev McKinsey and the later years of iris and the whole Dennis Olivia iris scenerio where Olivia was pregnant. I understand your comments so for example if bev McKinsey had been back as iris. Back in 1991 or 1992 I imagine her iris would have gone after Olivia for her reckless behavior. In the same way she went after Mindy on guiding light as Alexandra Spaulding after she slept with Roger thorpe and then got involved with nick McHenry lujacks twin. And from I saw from some clips from Texas went after another charecter after she got involved with Dennis. And for lying to Sam and then lying to Dennis at first about bieng her baby's father then probably would have went after Olivia and got custody of the baby where Dennis was the dad. Kinda like Colleen zenks Barbara when she was crossed. But then again Donna swajeski might have pissed off bev McKinsey. Like what happened at guiding light when bev McKinsey wanted to reduce her work schedule as she was starting to get worn out while jfp was there. And did not want her performances to suffer.
I still am not sure I totally buy the ratings system back then.. they had no way of knowing who was truly watching... wasn't it just an estimated guess based on a small group of scattered neilsen families? I mean, now they actually KNOW who's watching... then they didn't.
@@One-Day-After-Another Much like today, there were enough Nielsen households to represent an accurate sample size. From there, statistical analysis was done. Often, Nielsen studies showed some shows performed strongly in one part of the country vs. other parts. All of these regional variations were taken into consideration.
Russ a cardiac surgeon RX’s a sedative for Mac, a patient with a recent head injury with loss of consciousness & concussion! And also for Rachel in early pregnancy. Both contraindicated.
