    How gorgeous! I just got my first peacock gudgeon, and I really do enjoy his cichlid-like darting movements and curiosity with everything. Thanks for the info on sexing and breeding too; might be a fun project to try one day!

    This is my first lesson on Peacock Gudgeons! What a lovely fish! They are colorful, and busy- too rambunctious for my nano tanks. But I'll put them on the list for the bigger tank in my future! Thank you, Daniel!

    Dear Daniel:
    I thought about keeping these, but my water is too alkaline, although Pecktec lives just one state away from me and seems to keep his quite happy. His water is probably very similar to mine, but he has a reverse osmosis machine. He might use other methods to lower his pH or perhaps his Tateurndina ocellicauda were locally bred.
    Thank you for sharing your interesting and informative, species profile on this, fantastic, little fish.
    All my best,
    Sincerely,
    E. J. Brinegar

      I was going to suggest exactly what you said there bud; if you can find some that have been raised locally they will probably manage better with your water. 👍

    I’ve kept many different Gish in the past, just hot my first pair of peacock Gudgeons today. Sadly they’re just in a 21 litre atm, ideally a longer tank would be better gor then to really swim long ways. But for now it will suffice. The females out n about dusting out the tank but got dome reson the male has gone in hiding. Still it’s only been a couple of hours so Hopefully he’ll setting in soon.
    I’ll be hoping to breed but will need an egg tumbler unless I attach a small egg/fry net in corner (in thus small tank there might nit be enough room).
    I’d prefer a longer narrow tank approx 40 litres, so I’ll keep a look out on the local online sales spots.
    Do they mind a small amount of water current/flow or a more still surrounds ?
    Lisa from Perth West Australia

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  4 года назад

      Hi Lisa.
      They don't mind a small amount of flow but not too much. Weirdly the more hiding spots they have the more confident they seem to feel and the more you'll see them out and about. They also seem to do better in a small group of five or six and they would prefer more space as you say so if you can find a bigger tank for them you would be able to get a few more and you'll definately see better behaviour from them.
      If you add a couple of PVC pipes or some small Pleco caves that's what they like to breed and lay their eggs in. You can then remove the eggs from there.
      I'll bet you'll enjoy these great wee fish, it's hard not to fall in love with them.

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  Год назад

      I mean you probably could but if I'm honest I would say to be fair to the fish a ten gallon would be the absolute minimum for one.

    Will they thrive in tannin-stained water?

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  5 лет назад

      The pH range for these guys is 6.5 - 7.5 so as long as your water is in that zone I think they should be fine.

    Can i put these with a betta and some kuhli’s ?

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  4 года назад +1

      I have never kept them with either so I cannot speak from experience on it but I have heard cases where a male Betta has mistaken the Gudgeon for a female Betta and hassled it constantly which the Gudgeon did not appreciate. I've also heard accounts where Bettas would chase Gudgeon constantly and aggressively. That said it can depend totally on your Betta, they're all so different.
      In regards to the Kuhlie the thing that bothers me is that the both would want to use the bottom of the tank. If there's plenty of space for each it might be okay. Also Kuhlies can be quick and erratic but if it's not bothering your Betta I guess you have a quite relaxed one.
      I'm sorry I can't give you a better answer. My gut feeling is it isn't a good match but then you may try it and it's totally fine. If you do go attempt it I would certainly have a backup plan in place such as another tank to move the Gudgeon to or the store agreeing to take it back if it doesn't go well.
