When I was younger (10-16) we used to do this as a festival every year in huge 20 gallon cauldrons. It would take from 8 pm till 6 am of constantly stirring these huge cauldrons on campfires. It is honestly one of my best memories growing up.

The wife used to make this with her grandma growing up in a copper pot. I'm yet to convince her to take a whole day to make a big batch. Love the small batch you made, will try it.

The underside of your foodmill is where the best apple stuff is. Make sure you scrape that before you are finished with it.

Dave, if you are ever near Burton, Ohio in October. Stop by the Apple Butter festival 1st weekend in October @ Burton Century Village! They make it BIG BATCH style in copper kettles over a wood fire, everything in the kettle at once simmered in apple cider... that store bought stuff don't even come close! and warm apple butter on a slice of fresh Amish made bread? DELISH!!!

Greatly enjoying this new series. Takes me back to the "journals of the yurt" & "on the waters edge" videos from a decade ago. I wish you'd do another series "on the waters edge" :)

Dude, I’m getting fatter just watching your cooking videos! Grew up a Tuscarawas County farm boy. We had a cider press just outside the village where I grew up. Fresh cider and apple butter on toast was just this side of heaven. My Wife still makes a small batch of apple butter for me and cans it. It’s so much better than store bought stuff.

I adore this series! This is my third time through it, and it is awesome each time. Understanding that you are a very busy man, especially at this time of year with classes and other videos, I was wondering if there was any chance of you coming back and adding more recipes, I watch anything I can find on your channel, but I especially like the cooking videos. Thank you so very much for all that you do to teach us these vital skills and techniques. So appreciate your teachers, your school, and the products that you put out, but most importantly, I appreciate you for showing this world what a man, and masculinity can look like.

Dehydrate some apples. Blend or use a spice grinder after they are dry. Add a little water or even better some apple juice and heat up for a while. Done and no worries of burning.

Howdy Dave. Noticed you've been doing quite a few food vids lately. 👍
Haven't been able to watch em all yet, tho.
My granddad use a big copper kettle to cook his apple butter down in. Of course he started with 10 or 20 pounds of apples, and jarred it up for later. We use a 6 quart slow cooker at our house, covered with a grease spatter screen, so the steam can escape and apple butter can reduce and thicken. It has to cook over night pretty much, but works great. Apple sauce, (no additives) can be used as a starting point if apples are out of season. GFS has #10 cans of it fairly cheap.
    Good luck in your endeavors.

if you put it in the jar while still hot and put lid on. Turn jar upside down on counter and let it naturally cool off. It will seal the lid. Then don't have to put in fridge till you open it
