I'm 56 years old and remember when I first saw Steve Val back in the 80s when he was originally with Frank Zappa's band and then his forays with David Lee Roth and his amazing solo projects...But I'm also a gamer and when I heard his solo on Halo 2....it was riveting, amazing and expansive, a big sound to mesh with a huge and fantastic game. Lightening in a bottle..you only capture it once...
Starting to play Guitar and getting into Steve Vai Halo being my fav game and still is :) Halo 2 came out and I was obsessed with Steve Vai. Hearing the Halo 2 theme and Knowing instantly it was Steve Vai and absolutely loosing my mind in amazement. Halo Game soundtracks are IMO the best ever created and adding Steve Vai on Halo 2 and Anniversary was just so amazing. No other game soundtracks comes close to it...
Amazing Steven !!! I watched your studio cut when I was much older.. I am so glad they recorded that.. it was legendary performance. I’ve played halo a long time and everyone in the halo world knows halo 2 has best music.
Halo2 was an epic win for gaming and music. I still remember loading it up on my console and hearing that intro theme music was amazing, I was just getting into guitar myself and played an acoustic at the time and I didn't know That was Steve Vai! I just knew it was a killer melody and riff. Then there were many more surprises along the way, I remember playing the mission in the hall of the Arbiter and I nearly immediately recognized Breaking Benjamin playing a rocking tune(Blow Me Away) to an epic encounter! Halo 2 was done right, I didn't feel that way again about a game until Doom2016
I was the biggest sad when they removed all the dlc song on guitar hero...that destroyed a part of me that wont come back unless i get pc guitar hero but still its not the same
Yeah he nailed that intro on the first take too. The screen that has the Bungie logo. The rest had some editing and placement but the dive-bomb at the beginning and that first lick just freaking happened.
Steve is a good chunk of why I love Halo 2, Marty and Nile had great minds to involve him in the soundtrack. even Nile playing on Broken Gates and some of the other tracks is just awesome, also if you didn't know Nile Rodgers used to play Halo and is part of the reason he was involved himself, same thing with Breaking Benjamin, damn that soundtrack is awesome.

"I don't know if I fit into that kind of music" - Steve Vai
*Makes the biggest, most badass rendition of a game theme song*
Insane.
At the time he probably didn't catch on that video game soundtracks had evolved past chiptune sounds.
Steve Vai has been an absolute legend. Him coming into the Halo scene made me complete
and funny enough, he aint no "has been" 😉 He's still killin' it.
Mjolnir mix is one of the best things that ever happened to halo
