  • This is a tutorial explaining how a synth actually works.
    www.psy-conversion.com
    www.coffeeparkmusic.com
    I am not showing you how to do a specific type of sound, I'm just telling you what each knob actually do.
    I am sorry for my awesome English as I am a French Canadian from Quebec City. I could have done this video in french with subtitles but I wanted to give you a better experience as most of you probably don't speak French.
    I don't have a tripod I know, sorry about that.
    I will surely do more tutorials in the future like "How to do a specific sound", "How to do a good loud psytrance mix", "How to mix vocals/guitar", etc.
    Thanks for watching!

    Good job. Thanks for giving me more intuition on the knobs. I've got a 2X also (bought used for $950), which I love (the pitch lever is unique). I haven't explored too much out of the patches yet, partly just because the factory patches are pretty cool as is! BTW your English is fun. You've got a great presentation style, very relaxed. And I think your explanation of ADSR is the best I've heard or seen. And I love that last demo, awesome! Keep up the good work!

    Yes it is, an enveloppe shaping the whole sound + a volume knob to mix it with up to 3 other patchs. Nord call this section the amplifier. But after that 'amp/env' there is the actual amp/master volume knob (on left of the keyboard). Hope I answered your question.

    Sorry for late response, for FM I would suggest using FM8, amazing VST, there are some very very very good tutorials around here on youtube :) On the Nord there is FM but you can only choose one algorythm! So it is a matter of turing the "only-one-knob" lol... this knob only affects the intensity of the second OSC modulating the first one . . . if you really want pure FM goddess, FM8 is the way to go by far! You can make your very own algo and morphing is super easy :)

    Hi, i play lots of 'acoustic' instruments but i always struggle with synths. I've bought an Alesis micron and to be honest, i know nothing about it ;) What do you recommend for beginners? This seems easier than the micron because you have all the knobs within your reach.( i like those background sounds, you hear in pop / rock bands quit often and i want to make my own sound in stead of running through presets. ) thanks ;)

    Thanx for interesting explanation buddy! I have several question (maybe answers to them already were in this video but I could't understand everything you told, sorry :). Personally it's easiear to understand in text).
    1) Is Lead 2x plugged to PC? And if it is, in such way? Could you use all it's advantages live while recording in cubase (I mean all this knobs and other stuff)?
    2) Do you know anything about Nord Lead 4? What's the difference between them? is NL 4 worth it's money?
    3) Can you upload sound banks in lead 2x or not? Like piano or strings samples.

    • @AXIMETRIK
      @AXIMETRIK  10 лет назад +1

      Hi, thank you very much :P
      1 - The only way to record the audio is by plugging the audio outs to the input of your soundcard. But you can also plug it in midi and use it as a midi keyboard. So in your DAW you can make an audio track and a midi track. In the midi track you can record "knobs movement" and then hit record on the audio channel and the nord will play by itself with automation. I hope this is not too confusing XD
      2 - Never tryed it. Seems sharp and got lots of options. Some people say it is not as good as the Nord 2 for sharpness, raw sounds. Personaly, I would consider the NL4 if my 2X would break.
      3 - No soundbank in Lead 2X, Lead 4 I have no idea. Lead 2X is just a pure synth.
      I hope I answered all your questions! Feel free to ask new ones anytime :) and spread the word if this tutorial really helped you, I am glad to help people ^^

Back when I was choosing my daw it was mostly a battle between Live and Cubase and after trying both I ended up with Cubase. Many great artists today use FL. I try to assign canals to play the VST of STUDIO ONE but i allways make something wrong !!! As you can guess, I'm a beginner in the MIDI world... Can you help me or have you a tutorial about that ? Thanks and greetings from Belgium.

    • @AXIMETRIK
      @AXIMETRIK  9 лет назад

      Morgander Hey what's up :) Thanks for the good words! Using the Nord Lead as a midi controller shouldn't be too complicated but be aware that the knobs might fuck up your VST sounds if you touch them while it's plugged in MIDI. Both the keyboard and the knobs send midi data but the thing is you don't know what data the knobs send. Maybe the filter will be mapped on the OCS 1's pitch in the vst lol. So if tweaking a Nord Lead patch, I'd recommend unplugging the MIDI cord first.
      Now for making it work. You need an interface/external sound card with MIDI in/out or a MIDI in/out-to-usb interface. Something like that. I guess you already have that. So pout the Nord Lead's MIDI out into the MIDI in of the interface, then in windows, be sure your interface is set as the main audio interface. Then (never used studio one, so let me guess) go in Studio One and go in preferences or something like that. There will be a menu where you will be able to choose your audio in/out and midi interfaces. In the midi in list there will probably be the name of your interface. Choose that. Then it should work.
      If you have more questions please ask, I'll always do my best to help! Have fun with the Nord ! :)

    • @AXIMETRIK
      @AXIMETRIK  9 лет назад

      Morgander Oh I don't mind discussing it here as it might help others in the future :P What is your problem? As I said I never used Studio One so I can only assume how the preferences menus are made.
      Is your problem on the hardware side of things or the software/windows/StudioOne?

    • @morgander4930
      @morgander4930 9 лет назад

      Samuel Dallaire Thibault ok ! My problem is simple...i can't use my Nord lead !!! Everything is set up in studio one, when I play a key, I see Studio one receives the MIDI signal but i can't hear anything. I don't even know how to set Local on or off on the Nord ! Even with the user guide. So how using it as a master keyboard in order to play the VST ?

    • @AXIMETRIK
      @AXIMETRIK  9 лет назад

      Morgander Ok, maybe it is about the midi channels. You have 16 MIDI channels, maybe your nord isn't sending data on Channel 1. Maybe it sends data on Channel 2 or 16, etc.
      I think that in the manual of the Nord they tel you how to see that from the Nord screen.
      You probably can just change the midi channel on the studio one channel directly too.
      If Studio One registers the notes from the Nord as you say and that you have selected a midi track with a vst loaded in it. Other than different channels (VST might listen to only channel 1 for exemple) I don't really see what could be the problem.
      Hope this helps

      @AXIMETRIK  3 месяца назад

      @@cnovasalmanhussain751 It's a legendary synth for sure with its own tone but it's very primitive and simple. I would not say it's must. Actually no hardware synth is a must honestly.
      You can do almost anything with Serum and Filterverse (love that plugin atm!).
      I use hardware because to me they are inspiration machines. The limitations and the feel makes me do things differently. Automating parameters manually helps too to make it sound different from vsts.
      My absolute favorite synth atm is the Roland System 8. I love the sound of the Oscillators and the filters. They sound so good! It's imo the best sounding subtractive virtual analog synth. And in fact behind the scenes... it's a vst! You can install it on your PC and it sounds identical (I tested it).
      So my recommendation is, if you want an hardware synth, check videos on RUclips of people making sounds on it and pick the one with the most inspiring workflow for you!

      NORD LEAD A1 and a
      ROLAND SYSTEM 8?
      The both are head to head against each other basically the same price, same size...

      @@cnovasalmanhussain751 I have no experience with the A1 but I remember thinking it was too limited for me compared to the Lead 4. But all synths have limitations honestly. They're just different.
      But I love my System 8 and would never trade it. It sounds really musical. Roland are good at that.
      I also love my Hydrasynth but it's much harder to program and have less "sweet spots".

    est-ce que tu sais comment faire un son de mélotron avec le nord lead 2X stp? Denis

    • @AXIMETRIK
      @AXIMETRIK  9 лет назад

      Jamais essayé mais pour une flute à la mélotron j'imagine qu'une combinaison noize + triangle serait un bon point de départ :P J'utilise la librairie de Kontakt pour du mélotron habituellement.

      Si tu veux avoir le son du melotron, tu sera beaucoup mieux avec le Nord Electro. Ecoutez les examples sur leur site :)

  • @AXIMETRIK
    @AXIMETRIK  12 лет назад

    Not at all... on a musician's point of view, you will get to know how your sound is affected by each parameters... you will train your ear over time... but, as a sound engineer, it's always fun to actually know how your soundwave is affected technically ^^... but no need of that to produce great sound! If I'm not wrong, Infected Mushroom have no engineering background... as for deadmau5... and I concider those guys among the best in sound creation

    Should I buy the Nord Lead 2x in 2015 or will it become outdated?

    • @AXIMETRIK
      @AXIMETRIK  9 лет назад +1

      Hi, it really depends on what you want to achieve. This video is so old (it was even with my old PsyTrance project lol). I could make very interesting stuff with the Nord now and I actually plan on making videos again.
      That said, today's VSTs are really good. If you want a custom FM solution, you go with Sytrus or FM8. (Sytrus's my favorite). If you want a granular synth, Absynth is really cool. Wave tables? Serum is amazing!
      Now, if you want a subtractive synth, there are many solutions but I still go with the Nord. And Harmor. The thing is, I'm not really sure the Nord Lead sounds better because it's hardware, I think it just sounds different. I think having different solutions helps to cut into the mix.
      Now if you are an hardware freak like me, well you will enjoy the nord. The nord lead 4 is out and seems pretty cool but there are many purists who still prefer the 2X. But seriously I think the 2x is the best sounding synth with no effects. It's super good even before you add reverb or delay and stuff (no effects included in the nord itself btw)
      It is still a lot of money to spend and today I would personally invest in a modular and create my very own tone instead. I've heard people saying there are many VSTs sounding like the Nord Lead (Discovey Pro, Sylenth1) but I bought mine a long time ago so I still use it lol.
      In the end I could talk about my experience all day long and wouldn't really answer your question. I'd say go try one in a music store. Keep in mind that it's just a good machine at making basic tones with a few (but really cool) modulation possibilities. It does few compared to many of today's VSTs but it does it so well. I really love its sound. But like I said, that amount of money would go in a modular today. I'd say check on craiglist for used one, you'll save a lot of money and if their is a synth in this world that is built to last a thousand years, it's the Nord. All metal, hand assembled in Sweden. Best keyboard for live shows! :)

      Samuel Dallaire Thibault My budget is 1k so I might just go with the Nord lead 2x instead of the 4. But I have one more question. Will I need anymore instruments like Drum Machines etc or is the Synth enough.

    • @AXIMETRIK
      @AXIMETRIK  9 лет назад

      MyLocalMars Well there is a Drum Machine in the Nord and I did use it but it is limited. It depends what you want to do. Are you starting up making music? I personally use VSTs 90% of the time.

    • @mylocalmars2633
      @mylocalmars2633 9 лет назад

      Samuel Dallaire Thibault I do want to make music, yes. But as a hobby not as a profession. I'll just upload the tracks to soundcloud.

      MyLocalMars Well I'd recommend getting FL Studio 11 (comes with free upgrade to 12). Get a bundle, it fits in your budget and it will come with all you need. I use a lot of their products and think about literally switch to FL. They are really good.

    the nord lead 2x is low on polyphony, its a shame that such affordable synth is so limited

    • @AXIMETRIK
      @AXIMETRIK  8 лет назад

      +o c Yeah I know but at the same time the nord lead is such a simple synth. It just sounds good in its simplicity. So I never got to the point where I needed more voices really. I guess it depends on what you want to do.

    Why isn't the Release Knob called the Dettack Knob? Would make more sense.

    • @AXIMETRIK
      @AXIMETRIK  9 лет назад +3

      Aidan Stewart The terms (attack, decay, sustain, release) don't apply only to synths. They are older than synths and are everywhere. They are used to describe sounds physically. A piano for example has a hard attack, a long decay, a very soft sustain and a medium/long release depending on the use of the sustain pedal.
      Violins have quick attack, quick decay, loud sustain and very short release.
      "Release" means you released the key or the string and it's the time before the sound goes off.
      Hope that helps.

    • @Sixalienasa
      @Sixalienasa 9 лет назад

      The point I was trying to make was that the Release Knob functions like the Attack Knob only in reverse, or am I wrong?

    • @AXIMETRIK
      @AXIMETRIK  9 лет назад

      Aidan Stewart Yes, the attack is the time when you hit the note, the release is the time after you release the note . . . their name come from the action more from what they do if you will. You attack then you sustain then you release the key
