President Biden faced protests in Michigan this week over his ongoing support for the Israeli assault on Gaza. Michigan is a crucial swing state that could prove decisive in this year's presidential election and is also home to the largest percentage of Arab Americans in the United States. Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, who refused to meet with Biden's campaign manager last week, says it's inappropriate to consider electoral politics as U.S. policy supports an ongoing genocide. "For us, the lives of Palestinians should not be measured simply in poll numbers," Hammoud tells Democracy Now! We also speak with veteran pollster James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute, who says the Biden team is "cut off from reality" if they believe people will forget their outrage over Gaza by the time of the November election. "The White House is taking for granted that they've got support - and they don't," says Zogby.

The ceasefire deal calls for thousands of prisoners to be released for each IDF soldier that is a hostage. That is ridiculous. Palestinians still have hostages. Yet all people can seem to do is call for a ceasefire. How does the Mayor of Dearborn propose to get the hostages back.

Tbh I really think that's comparing apples to oranges. Gazans keep breaking ceasefire agreements. They don't exactly have a good track record. And the "prisoners" are people who were legally arrested for various crimes, and sentenced, or are being held until a hearing can occur. There's a ton of violence. The laws in Israel guarantee rights to any human on the land, independent of citizenship. If a teenager from Gaza attempts to murder a man at a bus stop, yes, that kid will be arrested and have to face justice. Being held in legal custody for an actual documented crime (also entitled to legal representation) is not the same as breaking into someone's home, abducting them, and holding them hostage. Is there corruption? Absolutely. But Israeli cooperation with PLO authorities makes it very significantly less likely that shenanigans will occur. There is also international oversight and humans rights inspections of Israeli prison and detention centers. That doesn't really exist for the hostages being held in Gaza.
As the true continues to unfold, we will see the true depths of evil on both sides.
