Efficiency vs Coefficient of Performance

In the context of thermodynamic heat engines, thermal efficiency tells you how well the engine converts the input heat into work. The coefficient of performance tells how well the heat pump (could also be a reversible heat engine operating in reverse mode) heats up or cools down the desired system for a given amount of input work.
