- This is how I'm Finally Getting HUGE Guitar Tones (my signal chain). I didn't mention the guitar because I use different guitars through this chain depending on the video I'm making. It's a Gibson Les Paul Custom though in case you were wondering. Thanks for watching.

Thanks!!!
I think the moral of the story is, no matter how expensive your gear is, if you don't know how to mix the sound (in context of multiple instruments, or multiple takes with a single instrument), it will sound like crap.
You also need to know how to play your instrument. Love watching people put videos on you tube and Facebook, sounds like my 3 year old playing when he first started.
Amen!!!..
0:04 when you get referenced in a video = instant like! For more EQ mastery my friend like to drop the 1,000hz-ish frequency to cut out this hiss noise from amps! Makes a HUGE difference. Thanks for this tips in the video!
Step 1: buy the biggest size guitar, cable, amp and pick. Everything should be planet sized.
haha 😐
😆
Play a bass?
HUGE sound !
Or in the case of buying a Les Paul, it must weigh roughly the same amount as a planet.
My first amp as an adult was a Rolabd Cube 30. That was OK. Then I upgraded to a H&K Triamp with matching quad. I've never struggled with tone. These days I'm using the Triamp still, a Mesa TA-15 and a Marshall SV20. And a shite-ton of EQD fuzz pedals.
nice I've still got my Cube 30 original release. great practice amp built to last. I used to want a warp 7 when they came out
The world of double tracking opens so many doors. using different guitars for each side, different amps or settings it's all wonderful
Thank you Mike here from the Art of Guitar..... I really wanted this video, ur tone is really full.
Dude it’s so great when a genuinely nice person achieves success. Good on you your content has helped people navigate these challenging times. Peace
Awesome setup and overview explanation. 🤘 what hit me was, your fader settings.. It all comes down to the ears
My first real tube amp was also a jcm 2000. I liked it okay. Today I have a VHT and I recently bought the quad cortex for doing all my quiet playing in the home studio stuff. The quad cortex really is pretty damn amazing.
Engl is the brand I gravitate towards for my own tone. I love hearing 5150's and Dual Recs and 2C+ and all those, but my favourite to play through is Engl Savage. Love the way the gain sounds.
🤘🏻Awesome video. Your tone is always killer, I'm always seeing comments asking about it.
and thats that. Always questioned how you got that killer tone. it's in the engl. Love engl myself also. got a engl se and the engl inferno. Those amps sound killer straight in. no drive pedal or such needed persay. Nails that early megadeth tone really well, that marty friedman tone and such. You've got a awesome channel and are truly a really cool dude. Really loving what you do.
Michael Romeo from Symphony X is also using ENGL amps and both his clean and distortion tones sound like a dream. Definetly one of the best guitar tones I have heard in my life. By the way can you do cover of a Symphony X song? Would love yo hear the ENGL head on a Michael Romeo riff :)
I love Romeo and SX but it’s some of the worst produced and terrible sounding guitar tones ever. It’s like he is still using his shitty Line 6 setup from years ago 😂
@@JL-mi4nj yes! Absolutely love Romeo...but his tone sucks! Always
I feel like everyone has a perfect imaginary tone that plays in their head.
Nice! It took me a while to get both my amps dialed in. I finally feel like I have them to where I want. I see you have a string butler on your Les Paul, I have one on mine as well. Love your videos man!
That symphony destruction made me smile 😊
That was a killer riff you made up for this megadeth song. I couldn't find it. Keep it up
It's on my Instagram now. :)
@@TheArtofGuitar cool.
Double tracking any guitar part makes it sound incredible! Highly recommend
my first "real" amp was the JCM2000 also. I still use it often. I like it. variety is good though.
I bought the 2000 also. I had the dsl, I wish it had a master volume, I bought a metal zone for low volumes but I started using it all the time cause I didn't think the Amp had near enough distortion. Every once in a while I'd try it and ppl always said my amp sounded great and my pedal sounded bad. I didn't much care for the pedal either but it was giving me the distortion I thought I was missing. After like 10 ppl telling me, I tried micing and listening back. And revelation my Amp sounded great, great distortion my pedal like crap way too much distortion. So kinda like hearing your voice back. Also part of it, was I had to sit in another room with my door closed, cause the mic was picking up my picking even turned up loud. I think my hearing and feeling the strings, messes with me actually hearing what's coming out of the Amp. I really liked the deep button on that Amp.
That's a sophisticated set-up and it pays back. I could not set up a 4x12 and mics in my room, so I am happy, that I can record with a Kemper.
I use UAD and send my two mics, to another bus with a touch of Precision Delay and the EMT Plate and you have yourself that overdub huge track in just one tack...and you get the huge sound live, low latency while using the UAD console/Luna.
Best amp I ever had was a Mesa Boogie Mark III combo with ext. cab. I regret selling it.
The ENGL amps are famous for absolutely impecable tones, one of the bands that have used them is Blind Guardian, could you show us some BG riffs one of these days?
To get the Fender cleans and the Engl modern Gain, one only need buy a Mesa Boogie Mark V. It is the most versatile amp out there.
Thanks for the video. Using 2 mics is really a game changer. It would have been nice to hear isolated tones from each mic. We could really hear what each one is contributing to the overall tone. As far as clean tones, that would be cool too, but come on, its all about the gain! Thanks!
I use the Engl 60w MKII into a Marshall JCM900. Love love LOVE ENGL!!
Dude, that Les Paul Custom is the sweetest looking guitar you have. I'm so jealous. 😋😋😋
sound and tone is awesome, noticed the change recently... i play acoustic, no kit required 🤣😂
Symphony of destruction.. excellent!
You know that gif of Steve Brule pretending to understand “ohhhhh” That’s me watching this
my first big amp was a mode 4 that I purchased new when they were released. it was actually pretty good I played many gigs with it until it died. now I have a mark v and 6505 that I run through the mf400 cab I still have. great cab loads of low end. double tracking with these heads blended sounds incredible
I use a Sennheiser e809 and Royer 121. But this sounds pretty cool
Sounds sick mike!
Try playing that Fender amp with the Engl. Saw someone do this with a Fender and a Marshall. Because they are voiced differently, the sound is rich and creamy when dialed in.
Your tone sounds great, Engl Amps are definitely solid amps. Your Custom sounds sick!🙌🤙
I am new to your channel...but I will say "Heartbreak BLVD" by shotgun messiah was rockin! Neve preamps destroy.
Great stuff. Nice tone
Dude, one of the biggest problem on tone lies over a very simple setting on the amp: volume. To get the best out of it you need to boost the volume close to the max. Then use an attenuator to bring it down to the necessary loudness.
Is that true for both solid state and tube amps?
No way? It's like Eddie Van Halen did that exact same things back in the 70s. Don't act like you thought of that on your own lol.
@@NoName_NoTitle just for tube.
The engl retro is a really underrated head, almost non existent behind the engl amp front
Love your videos Mike!
Your setup sounds better than my Gorilla amp.
Would be great to hear you live instead of through the speakers on my smartphone.
I would hope so😂
@@markrosenquist8259 Gorilla amps are awesome! :D
sounds real, real good!
Solid sound!
You should do a Boston Artist Series- Tom scholz is really unique especially with his melodic hooks and riffs
Glenn Fricker would call that dual tracking. I do something similar with a tc electronic MIMIQ Doubler and two practice amps. It's a hell of a sound.
Hey, i've been eyeing up that mimiq pedal to hopefully get a nice doubled up sound. Would you say its necessary to have the full size one for the stereo effect? Or is the mono sound good enough for me to just get the mini version? Thank you.
i always feel like the odd one out when it comes to amps cos i prefer the compressed fizzy kind of sound you get from a cranked solid state
In my humble opinion, the Peavey XXX and Peavey Joe Satriani signature all tube heads produce the finest sounding metal tones ever - to me anyway. I'm all for new technology but I will probably never use a plug in or software of any type as a substitute for just miking the real amps which many people do now. It's like give me the Millennium Falcon and the Tie Fighters, not a new digital representation of a spacecraft. To me it's not really an advancement in the technology as it's a whole new technology taking the place of the other technology. But that's OK, if it works for people, its all good. But what you said about just getting the best sound out of the amp first is not only how I feel, but Ed Van Halen said the same thing, and if that's what Ed thought, well, there's nothing more to say.
Buy a two notes captor x and bypass all the mics and stuff….comes with an awesome cab plugin and IR loader
Sounds great, I've been having a hard time dialing in my electric for recording
great tutorial
Lol I had that same Peavey PA starting out👍🏽
Now I’m looking for one of those fat head ribbon mics😉
Hey Man, your tone is awesome, but I personally think that the compression you add in your daw kill the dynamics of the amp. I would remove the compression there and add a slight bit of gain on the amp to get the compression there without loosing the amps dynamics. Also you could add a little more presence or treble to give it more bite
Depends on the situation. Once the guitars are in the mix I make adjustments to fit. More gain on the amp is great sometimes but other times it makes it more lost in the mix. Mixing is such a balancing act.
@@TheArtofGuitar this is true i'm not talking about much gain, I'm talking about if your gain is on 5, put it to 5.5
@@TheArtofGuitar at least to get that symphony of destruction tone ;)
Buy any EVH 5150 III head or combo. You will have really good guitar tone.
Engl's are monsters!
You could do the Metallica thing and put a low volume DI or Fenderi track down the middle, to give more clarity
It's the best head! (he's ever used)
I've been using Korn's woodstock 99 soundcheck to set the levels of my midi drums and I'm really surprised by how quiet the guitars are. They even turn them down more than my instinct tells me is too quiet. I don't know if that's unique to their band but it has me more comfortable setting lower guitar levels.
I only briefly liked korn when I was kid but IMO that's one of the best concerts any band has or will ever have.
Great video
You should put links for the equipment you use! Love the videos btw!
Doubling guitar tracks is key to get huge sound.
nice vid.
Is it possible to have a similar result , with all the UAD amp simps . Let's say the savage 120 and maybe others.
Sounds good
A little chilly in the studio today?
Noticed you're using a string butler, worth giving a go?
That LP has a lot of noise for the amount of distortion you're putting I can hear it every time you attack the strings. You got everything shielded there?
Have you experimented with different mic placements for recording?
I just played the fart of guitar after 5 beers in my buddy's garage. (High five)
Sweet
Maybe I missed it but I dont think you mentioned the exact model of your ENGL? Looks like the Retro Tube 50/100? Either way very satisfying Marshall style crunch 😎
It says on the video thumbnail plus I mention it in the video. Retro Tube 100.
I could never, ever figure this out...lol. way too much involved to wrap my head around. Seams almost like you're making it more complicated then it has to be. Probably not, just looks like it to me...lol. i have a microphone in front of my cab that goes straight to a Barringer mixer, that goes straight into a tuner with a cd burner...that's it. Old school shit. 🤣 We burn a cd and done. That's the level of my sophistication of recording..lol. Could it sound better??..sure, but not by me. RESPECT!!! Love your vids bro🤟👍🍻🍻
I am a simple man, I plug in my marshall and turn the gain all the way up
IMHO, there is too much bass and not enough mid/treble. I learned in my first recording session that the bass player was there to play the bass notes
Sounds really good man. I've reverted back to my Marshall JCM 800 with a Donner EQ pedal before my Digitech rp500 and a Behringer noise reduction pedal after before going into the Marshall. It's simple but effective. Bludgeoning, to be honest.
EQ pedals are a sleeper. Its like hiring a sound manager😂
Do you find the fathead gets easily overloaded in front of a loud speaker?
Just noticed the string butler
Curious... How loud are you running the Engl? Any attenuator or do you have the luxury of playing loud there?
Around 3.
Awesoooome
how much sound proofing if any do you have for this set up? It doesn't look like you have any but maybe that's just clever camera trickery
This video was great, but I just want to say thank you for not wearing the contacts anymore. *giggle*
Why would you add limiter on guitar bus? I imagine you dont have any peaks with distorted tones.
Thanks
It's on the master buss for when I record with a full-band set up. Boosts the volume at the end of the chain a bit.
Would anyone be able to help me with how to setup dual amps please? I have a 50w Plexi and a 50w Silver Jubilee hand-wired clone amps. Can I connect both these amps to my 4x12 cabinet and blend the sound of them together? How exactly would I wire that up? Both my amps can do 4/8/16 ohms, and my cabinet has 3 inputs: an 8ohm Left stereo input that is also a 4ohm mono input, an 8ohm Right stereo input, and a 16ohm mono input.
I'd like the tones of my two amps to be blended. What about my effects? As an example, would I put my pre-amp effects like overdrive and wah-wah in front of the Plexi, and then all my other effects like reverb and my EQ pedal in the FX loop of the Jubilee? Or is this basically going to necessitate buying another 4x12? Thanks!
me watching this when all i use is a iphone garageband a irig and tonebridge 🤣
Is that a UA Engl plugin?
Tone is in the fingers…and a Marshall stack
What are the speakers in the cab?
What song is he playing at the end there
With the track pan it sounded like Alice In Chains
I thought the Princeton chorus was your secret amp? 🤫
No, that's just my newest nostalgia amp. :)
@@TheArtofGuitar I had one. 2x10 speakers if I remember. Played metallica through this. The clean chorus was great for sanitarium
Yes but how manly is your EQ?
Cheat Code: Boss Katana
Sounds a ton like Jerry Cantrell
rich kid, the OPX by neve is like $4k, the guitar is like $3k, the amp set up with cab is like $3k with the mics and what ever did daddy buy for you ? oh I see a Flying V in the background $2k, then your rich boy Apolo, pro tools subscription all which add up to another $4k, and you recommend this to everyone? lol!
So all we need is like $6,000.00, not counting a guitar. That's cool....
Closer to $2500 if you go used.
Mike your hairs lookin a little messy 😆 can't wait for next stream!
Physical gear is nearly obsolete.
Hey walker eat cheese
The TSL's sucked.
I don’t know any of this. This is another language.
I watched the whole video. Why?
Give me amp plugins, I'll create damn great tone in an hour. Give me a damn expensive amp, I'll only be able to produce a cheap tone out of it.
I'm the opposite. My ENGL plugin is great but there's something missing that the amp gives especially when double mic'd.
