You Sir, are the Bob Ross of hydroponics. With the 'happy little greens'... Thank you for your thoughtful "talk-throughs". You provide wonderful insight!
OMG! My first living wall, 36 pockets, is up and running! So far I have planted radish, basil and cilantro, with beets, watercress, Asian greens and lettuce to follow as they grow large enough to transfer into the wall. I started with a few plants from the “living herbs” section of the grocery store since they are only $3 instead of $8 at the nursery. I wanted to make sure they would survive the 80 - 105 and higher temperatures that have been plaguing me out here in California’s Bay Area. Since it is dryer here than where you are in Florida, I used bubbler type emitters open wide for a fast water flow on each section. The drip types like what you are using were drying out way too fast and plants were wilting. Further, I have to leave the pump on 24-7 to ensure a moist overnight for the plants. Evening temps can remain as high as 80 so they were drying out overnight. I added another little refinement which is to prevent me from having to dig around each pocket to empty, wash and restore clay pebbles after each planting. I fill 5x7 mesh jewelry bags with the clay pebbles, pop the plants in and stuff the bags into the pockets. This allows me to quickly and efficiently retrieve the pebbles all at once by lifting out the mesh bags. Also, it allows me to quickly change the location of a particular plant by lifting out the bag containing all the pebbles and the plant for the location change if, for example, a particular plant is crowding a neighboring plant. So far, this system is totally changing my summer gardening by eliminating the loss of greens due to scorching heat. I put up a small shade to help with this. I will henceforth save most all of my dirt gardening for cooler times of the year - if EVER! This is so much easier! And I LOVE the variety. It is not only changing my gardening, but also my cooking, diet, health and gardening satisfaction. Thank you so much for sharing this priceless gift. ❤️😄🥳. PS. Have you tried strawberries? Mine in dirt are frying just like the greens did.
That's awesome! You probably have to run it more like Chuck on Together We Grow, he lives out that way, Arizona. I love that you work with it and adjust to fit your climate. You rock! I especially love the mesh bag idea, I will be sharing that with the community. Keep on Growin'!
I just wanted to jump on here and say how thankful I am for your channel. The skills to have learned from you have really changed my small family for the better you have no idea I'm definitely going to give this a try too
AWESOME! Thx so much for sharing all your experiences and experiments. I’m right behind you but starting slowly so as not to get overwhelmed. I am currently a bit frustrated due to excessive heat out here in the Bay Area of California. Significantly over 80 every day, sometimes as high as 100 in my yard so many things frying, dying, not producing, etc. Not to even mention significant wind which whips and thrashes taller greens, vines, etc. I’m going to slowly transition to microgreens and forget trying to outwit the weather. Thanks again. Your laid back attitude and methods are a tremendous inspiration! ❤️❤️❤️
The heat and humidity is bad. I live in South Louisiana so I understand about the rain and heat. We already lost a few plants. Thanks for the information.
This is so cool! I’ve got a lot of fence space so that would make good use of it. Maybe use a solar fountain pump for the water - I gotta do some research thanks for your videos!!!
Absolutely gorgeous and fabulous as always! Just love watching you and hearing about your thought process.... Besides your voice is so calming with great visuals to top it off !
I love this! Can’t wait to hear how it does as the temperature rises this weekend. I’m in SE Texas, so I get the heat issues. Thank you for all you do for us ❤
My first thought is "Can this be adapted to off-grid?" Like, could i install a large tank above the wall and let it gravity feed with a catch tank at the bottom? And i could manually refill the top tank after work? It seema plausible...🤔
Some of my wonderings from the video: How long do you intend for your greens to live in the wall? Is this to keep them fresher rather than harvesting and putting in fridge? Also wondering if direct sowing into walk would be beneficial, or is transplanting the way to go? Love this new experiment as I've wanted a living wall for over a year now. Not sure why i never considered hydroponics. 😂 Thanks for sharing all that you do!
Thank you. Yes, once harvested and put in the fridge, they stop growing. Putting them in the wall, they continue to grow, increasing my yields. We will be experimenting with direct sowing after the first few harvest.
I love this. I've always liked the living wall thing and have been thinking how to incorporate one. I was thinking just with jars - kind of like a spice rack, but this is even better. I'm going to be building an outdoor kitchen so this would be perfect to have on one side to easily grab herbs and stuff for cooking. wonder if you could get one with bigger pockets to do bigger plants like peppers and cherry tomatoes.
Love the idea, thinking how to adapt it for the extreme summer heat, storms, high winds and 0° freezes we now deal with in Texas in recent years. Basically a 100° temp range over a year. Keeping everything adequately watered in very hot weather is a big factor.
Maybe you can make an update video in about a month or two addressing the algae issues 🤔? Im curious to know how visible it will be on that black material. I suspect it will build up in that channel but that looks easily wiped out. And im curious to know if moss will adhere to that material? That would absorb any algae issues! Can you try that for me and your viewers? I look forward to your update video in a month! I already know it will do good thru the heat. Id like to put rows of these in my back yard back to back, to help cool my auqaponics garden. But they would have to be on a separate hydo system if they produce as much algae as i suspect they would.
I had never seen this before in hydroponics, I'm super excited to try this out as well. My only worry would be water evaporating since it's all open. How is your experience with this?
What about putting planting pots in holes in a board or plank so half the pot on one side and half the pot on other side. By doing that you can grow double the plants
this has been a major question for me. LIghting and HEAT. I'm in north Louisiana and the heat can restrict soil growing. thank you again for this!! with the moist pebbles and low flow of water do mosquitos get in there?
Ideally, this is a cut-n-come-again system. How do you keep it up with Microgreens where it needs continual replacement? Succession seed starting seems very complex for so many varieties.
I would really like to try this, but the problem is that I would like to grow outside but not sure how to hang on a vinyl fence. If I can't, i will have to grow in the garage, and I really don't want to. Is it possible to hang on a vinyl fence?
I'm curious how quickly the nutrient solution evaporates away. I'm watering my grow bags almost daily right now And I'm not far from you here in St Petersburg FL
@@largefamilylife9 it would work, why not.. So from what I understand ...we would just have to run a little hose off of the pump thats down in the reservoir , to the top drip tube, what an awesome idea.

I'll be interested to see how this holds up over a storm. My backyard space is the perfect size for this, but it can get windy.

OK Mike, I love the concept.
QUESTION: Where does a person go to purchase the felt grow bags?
Thank you for sharing!
Can usually find at Lowe’s or Home Depot sometimes Walmart. If they don’t have em there just check online shops
bunches on amazon

Yes, once you start looking around on Amazon, a lot of other suggestions pop up with different sizes. I am looking at a larger one too.
This is just brilliant!!!

Maybe consider heating the circulating water in freezing Temps?
Oh. And insulate your sump, or recess it into the ground. Helps against both heat and extreme cold.
Looks great.
I'd start a NFT system in the gutter along the bottom. Or more clay pebbles if you'd prefer.
Thanks. Yes, we are waiting for more to come in, used what we had. That is a great thought!
Perfect❤!
I was so stunned from all other nice things of this awesome wall, that i already forgot this thought!
Smart! I'd never thought to use them hydroponically! Very interested in how it works and trying it myself! TY! NM Desert 7B.

It's really easy. If I run out of one kind for a few days, what's the big deal? Just keep planting and having fun. Stress makes people quit.
Is the black fabric a concern in high temps, or do you expect the liquid to help keep it cool?
Did you see the digital thermometer?
I must have missed something. Too many distractions
Where did you get the wall great as always
Thanks. Amazon.
This is awesome!! Where do I get the living wall?
Thank you. The grow bag is on amazon. There are many different sizes. I will make a list of the other supplies I used if needed.
I can’t find the grow bag on amazon

What pump do you use?
Do you have a link for the living wall fabric?
Here is what I used: amzn.to/4fwR1jr
Any idea on the amount of clay pebbles used for that wall?
Not quite all of a 14lb box.
What percentage shade cloth do you use for Florida?
To be honest, I have no idea, I just ordered the first one that fits the size I need, lol.
@@KeepOnGrowin Great LOL, dealing with this Zone 10 is tough

Get what? The grow bag? Amazon
Which direction is the wall oriented towards?
south
I've not built one of these but a vertical orientation would be ideal and direction would be down and up, 🤭🫣
Where to buy this material? What is it called?
what are you referring to?
