  • Guitarist Larry Coryell has been a part of every movement in jazz in the last four decades, from fusion to the straight-ahead revival, to new concepts moving the music forward. He brings his “Strings Attached” multi-guitar band to Washington’s Blues Alley to celebrate the club’s 50th anniversary, and to perform for VOA’s “Beyond Category.”

Gone too soon, I was fortunate to see him play several times. Two times stand out. The first time I saw him play was back in his fusion days, about 1976 or 7. He was by himself and he had severe equipment failure right after he started so all he had left was an acoustic guitar playing into a microphone. So what he had planned for the evening was out the window. I wish I had a video of that show. He played some of the most stunning acoustic guitar I have ever heard. Then about twelve years ago I saw him at the Detroit International Jazz Fest and he was just doing an impromptu meet and greet after the show. I walked up to him with my son who was about 13 and a budding young guitarist. We had taken the face plate off his telecaster and brought it to the show in hopes we might get him to sign it which he gladly did. The real treat was that he talked to us and was so engaging - in no way aloof. Talked to us as if we were old friends. very special man and an elite musician.

I saw Larry Coryell live at Blues Alley in 2000. Approached him to say hello after the show and he was a super nice guy. Inventive and genius guitarist. May he RIP.

This is great. I've been a LC fan since the '60's. Only get to see him live once around '75 with the white-hot Eleventh House. The irony is this is a VOA event. This the same VOA that was/is the CIA world-wide radio presence. The same CIA that loved fooling around with LSD. Acid and Larry. Yeah

i have been at almost NO historic event...EVER...but i'm proud to say that i was there at the beginning when larry began to stretch his rock/jazz fusion legs as a member of the gary burton quartet as they made their very FIRST performance at the austin jazz festival in late march or early april of 1967...they were not THAT received--at first...the announcer begged the audience not to judge on first appearances...well, that kind of fell on deaf ears as they were roundly, if not loudly, booed when the curtain rose on this band of kids with shoulder-length hair looking like no jazz band ever...burton and coryell were the worst offenders...steve swallow had almost NO hair....hahaha...no one thought that a jazz quartet should look like the beatles...however, the audience quickly warmed to them and their then-new musical style as burton and coryell laid them low with the absolute mastery of their instrumentsthat would stand them in good stead for the next half-century...it was, indeed, the start of something big...larry's unexpected demise cast a pall over the entire jazz world...RIP, good buddy...

Does being a jazz guitarist mean that you won't lose your hair?
