  • In this video I show some ideas on how to make an analog-like pad using the amazing free VST synth Surge, going in the process through some of the features of the instrument
Here's my Gumroad, with a bunch of packs of Vital patches, and soon patches for other plugins too

Great video - if you do a couple more Surge videos, I might really get into using Surge. The analog features are very impressive (classic osc, warm tone, osc drift, tape effects). That makes this synth a good complement to Vital when you need those warmer tones.
One thing I struggle with is how to dissect an existing preset to make small changes. It was good to see how you modulated parameters with the LFO, but how can you get a quick overview of all the modulation in a new preset? It doesn't seem as obvious as Vital's "mod circles" and mod matrix.
I agree that FM routing would be a good next topic. I'd also like to learn more about the filter configuration and the effects routing.

I think, to put it simply, you can't. There is no obvious way, as far as my understanding of the synth and its manual go, of knowing all the modulation routings, you'll need to go one by one through your mapped mod sources (which luckily are colored differently once assigned) and see what they are modulating, studying a patch and understanding it is significantly more difficult than in Vital. Still, as you mentioned, it does analog emulation very well, and not only that, there's plenty of exotic possibilities; and even though I wouldn't say it sounds "better", I would go as far as saying its sound engine is in most scenarios more musical to my ears.
They're imho two very different animals, I would probably never even try to program a complex sequence in Surge, and I'm quite unlikely to try making a growling bass on it (though it is perfectly capable of doing both), but also, for practical purposes, there's lots of sounds I can think of for which Surge would definitely be my tool of choice.

You’ve probably seen what good news are there now in Surge XT, but for those who haven’t: there is now a modulation list with filters and whatnot, allowing you to see what modulates what and edit all of it right in that window too.

Platipo, I love your videos, but for the next one can you please keep your levels for Music/speech more balanced, when i want to hear your voice I have to ride my fader to avoid blowing my ears out ... thank you

Duly noted, constructive criticism is always welcome. I'm a bit perplexed though, listening to the video it doesn't seem to me my voice is significantly lower than the synth, I will get my synth levels a bit lower anyway
