This by far the BEST rendition I have heard of this beautiful aria. Neville Marriner has pretty much hit near perfection with this performance . Felicity Lott , the soprano has absolutely hit the nail on the head - just beautifully sung , no one else Ive heard has sung this better , & that includes renowned names like Natalie Dessay & Kiri Te Kanawa

I agree. I fell in love with this when I had the album. If only she had done it in German, it would be perfection. However, Marriner keeps the tempo true to Mozart. So many other conductors rush through all of this and the tempo changes. I understand now why this was included on the album.

I only just searched for this aria to recommend it to others. Then, just now, wanting to post a Thank You comment and give the vid a LIKE, I see that there are 12 thumbs-downs for the vid. Well, firstly, to Ryerson and all the Likes, or Likers, well done! Yet, to those 12 lost souls, I'd simply like to say that composition requires depth. Performance requires the ability to grasp that depth, apart from technique. Thus, in the end, to not like this masterpiece is to lack both technique and depth.

Yes, and Mozart set music to it. Unfortunately, it was left unfinished and is still only fragmented to this very day. It's musical styles, especially in the overture, look towards Mozart's next great German singspiel, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, K.384. Mozart wrote this work whilst living in Vienna, after his previous Italian opera Seria, Idomeneo, re di Creta. It's in only two acts, but contains some of his best and well-loved melodies, including the chorus from act 1, Konstanze's frighteningly difficult 10 minute long aria "Martern aller Arten", and the Turkish Finale. All three were included in Amadeus at some point in time, and were performed by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, directed by Sir Neville Marriner, with Suzanne Murphy performing the act 2 aria and the Ambrosian Singers performing the Turkish Finale. Zaïde is often paired with Mozart's later extremely short singspiel Der Schauspieldirektor, K. 468, which was co-written by Italian composer Antonio Salieri, of whom is portrayed in Amadeus.
