- EFF leader Julius Malema has taken his party's campaign to Stellenbosch in the Western Cape today. Athi Mtongana spoke to the red berets leader.

My perspective of Stellenbosch is different. I am a Malawian and I did my masters degree at Stellenbosch University. I was warned of racism before I joined the university. I was told that I may never be able to finish my masters. I was so scared. But lo and behold, I had a very amazing experience. My Afrikaans professors (Brand, Punt, Nel) were just amazing. In times of financial hardship, I accessed miscellaneous funds for my basic survival. In my second year, I was given a research grant which propelled the research process. I had an exquisite apartment within the city. I finished masters with a distinction and in a record time. If I can find an opportunity I can go back to live and work in Stellenbosch. I didn’t experience even an ounce of racism. It was a mountain top experience.

You don't possess any threat to white people because you're foreigner who's just here to study and build a better life for yourself. They are being racist to Black South Africans because they know they've stolen our property and they also know sooner or later we're going to reclaim that property. Now you cannot tell me that the millions of South Africans are crazy when they say white people are racist. According to the World Bank, South Africa Is the most unequal country IN THE WORLD and the inequality is racially based. When we say white people are racist we mean they are Institutionally excluding Black South Africans from economic activity, they don't want to share the wealth of the country. They are predetermining the future of a lot of black people and that's racist. When you say "I" you're individualising the issue, this is not about you and your experiences. A white high school teacher once said to me he likes me because I'm not like the other Blacks. Does that mean I should suggest that white people are not racist? We talking about 40 million people complaining about white people and you have the nerve to suggest that this is not true just because of your experiences. This is another reason why Black South Africans don't like foreigners, you guys are having it easy in our country.
