  • Although they were left out of the Big Four, TESTAMENT has arguably created one of the most consistently pure thrash metal discographies of any American band. Their catalog features two key members across all 12 albums, plus a virtuoso guitarist onboard for every release and a rhythm section that has featured some of the biggest names in Metal to ever lay down the backbeat. Darcy and Mike signed up to tackle this discography with us so let’s see how folks rank over 30+ years of consistent Bay Area thrashers.

This was a good episode. A thrash band that in the later half of their career have now really got their respect and due. Honestly, for me the one of two of the old heritage American thrash bands to have stood the test of time with having a for the most part a consistent catalog and sticking to thrash. Those two being Overkill and Testament.
A few points I’ll comment on about this episode. Firstly, congrats on all of you for ranking the Gathering so high. That was a nice surprise. It’s actually my number 2 Testament album of all time. (Legacy being my number 1) The Gathering is a perfect blend of old meets new and done extremely well. It’s a brilliant album and catchy as hell.
You all made strong points. I’ll say an album like the Ritual isn’t quite as bad if you start comparing it to what was coming out in 1992 for more known metal/rock. Which brings me the point on their last 3 albums being formulaic and boring. Alan said they’re kind of doomed either way. Stay the course or experiment, but get chastised either way. I really think nostalgia is the main reason why someone would dog on later Testament, or? Like it. Obviously their later material isn’t going to hold up to the old. However, For a band of their age they still deliver, and deliver well.
This is kind of why I’m hesitant to watch your Overkill discography when it comes out because I know how that is going to go down. Praise, and give an in depth review on the first 5, hate a few in the 90s then? like the 2000 material on up to a point but give a vague review of it and say stuff like stays in the lane, comfortable, boring, too long etc.
Which it personally amazes me you will all praise the hell out of a Atlantean Codex record that clocks in at 65 minutes that to my ears is just mid tempo doomy galloping boring riffs that go absolutely nowhere and put me to sleep after 15 minutes, but complain a Testament or Overkill album clocks in over 28 minutes. 😂🤣 I’m obviously busting a bit of balls here. So don’t take it too personally. We all hear music different which is a good thing. I understand what you are saying about legacy bands over staying their welcome but some of us fanboys and yes, I’m a fanboy that probably likes too much for my own good and I want them to stay as long as possible because some of us look at it as a part of our youth that is still carrying on.
I just haven’t personally latched on to any band as strong in the last 20 plus years as I have to bands from the 70s throughout the 90s. Not saying there isn’t anything I don’t love in the 2000s on up. Witchtrap out of Colombia is one of my favorite post 2000 bands. I still however, like getting excited over a new Kreator or Overkill album. Not saying I’m going blindly praise it but what else am I going to do? Get excited over the next Undergang album? Nah!!!! I’ll take the new so called boring Testament or Deicide record! I call myself a Neanderthal for a reason! 😉
Take care and thanks for all the content as always.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to be there live, but no question, "The Legacy" is one of the greatest Thrash albums of all time and, as Marty rightly pointed out, comes from the era in which pretty much all the important Thrash bands had a completely unique identity and sound. In addition, for me Alex Skolnick and Chris Poland from the original Megadeth line-up remain the greatest Thrash lead players ever.

Great episode guys. I am with Alan on this, a band like testament cannot win everybody. I still find them interesting (same for Kreator and Sodom). not a real stinker or bad album
I agree with the fact that albums should be shorter, except if you do prog or atm black metal. on the other hand for band is a win win situation: less cutting. rearranging, decision making and they can milk that double vinyl for 15-20$ extra... oh yeah
Maybe you all should start listening to 70's prog if you are looking for something new : ) might be a nice idea for an "album challange"

Good points on the live shows now , too much money outside of the bar and theatre settings . espc in the USA where metal scene of all genres and live scene is quite embarrassing sometimes . We are to few and spread out like marty said . Also I have been taking notice new /young and even seasoned bands not having anything physical at shows other than 1 shirt ,which drives me crazy, that is sometimes the only reason for me to take the time and go check out the show is picking up the physical music .
    Cheers 🤘

The Legacy is one of the greatest heavy metal albums ever!
Seen them twice. First time around the Gathering. They were very good. Second time when Formation of damnation came out. Chuck, Alex and Eric playing the first 2 albums in full. Blew my mind! Incredibly awesome show! Young thrashers were stagediving and going wild.
I do like First strike still deadly. For a rerecording it's pretty good. I remember playing along to its version of Over the wall because it's tuned in D and my guitar was tuned that way.
And let's not forget Live at Eindhoven, recorded at Dynamo open air in my hometown.

Oh,this looks like a favourite youtubers episode. Love parts of the Testament discography and don't care about other albums. So much to write so please allow me to do it in parts. Off topic. Nice Riot shirt Alan. I was in Selb last thursday to see them live with the fantastic opening act Tailgunner. Sadly the Riot drummer had a medical emergency and was delivered to the hospital right before the show. Thankfully Tailgunner played a great full set and Riot did kind of an electric/unplugged set without a drummer. Weird but good. The new song Feel the fire sounded good that way. By the way, the new album is more melodic and very, very good. Maybe too melodic for you four ultra metalheads haha. Wendsday the Savage Grace+ Spitfire concert was although great. Fantastic singer this new Savage Grace guy. And I really like their new album. Now to the topic of the show, Testament....part 2

The chemistry and groove of the lineup from the debut to The ritual was so good. Louie was the perfect drummer for the style. The 1988 Monsters of rock show here on youtube is so powerfull. Before I rank the albums please let me tell you that I don't like it when thrash bands go death metal, alternative, progressive or they tune down guitars. But I have no problem when they become more melodic. So let's go:
      1.The new order
Together with Rust in peace my number one thrash album. Love the guitars. The concert with Megadeth, Flotsam...and Sanctuary was fantastic back then. Alex played his guitar all day long. In front of the hall. In a telephone booth. In the concert hall. What a nerd. Love every second but if I have to name the best songs it could be the titletrack, Deciples of the watch and musical death.
      2.The ritual
What a great album. Electric crown is my favourite Testament track. Love the slower songs like Return to serenity and The ritual. Agony and So many lies rock...

      3. Practice what you preach
Another great album. The concert with opening act Mortal sin was legendary. To hear Blessed in contempt, The ballad or Perilous nation live was unique. When it comes to the album I must say I love it but the clickdrums are too loud. Best song: Sins of omission. So happy I have seen Mortal sin as opening act on this tour. Remember Lebanon and I am immortal?
      4.The legacy
Every single song is a classic. The problem is the lo-fi production. It sounds distorted. Loudness wars before loudness wars was a topic haha. Not that bad on Raging waters, Alone in the dark and First strike is deadly. Other than the sound it is a great album.....

    • @thomashubner697
      @thomashubner697 5 месяцев назад +1

      5. Souls of black
Production wise it is on par with The lagacy. Means not really good. All in all still a very good album. Wish someday they will play The legacy and Face in the sky again. Best cover!!!! What a tour! Megadeth, Slayer, Testament and Suicidal tendencies.
      6. Dark roots of the earth
By far the best album after The ritual. It is more in the melodic style of The new order and Practice....The drumming is not bad for a Gene Hoglan album. Straight and not overplayed like on Titans of creation. Rise up and the titletrack are great. How long is this album? If you go to sleep the album plays. If you wake up the next morning it still plays. Lol
The rest of the albums are Ok (The gathering, The formation of damnation) or absolutely not for me (Low, Demonic, Brotherhood of the snake and Titans of creation). To be honest, Titans....has the most overplayed drums of all time. Not one second of room left for the other musicians.Don't understand me wrong, I like Time does not heal or Dark roots... but on Titans of creation he forgot to hit the breaks. Great show!

This is a great discussion. I jumped onboard with Testament with The New Order and first saw them live on the Practice What You Preach tour. The combination of Chuck’s voice, Eric’s riffs, and Alex’s leads is just thrash magic. It’s great that they still deliver the goods today….Unlike Barnes and this new SFU album…. 😂

Of course Testament records vary, and I'm no fanboy (even though I own all their records), but Metal Mickey is being too sardonic I think! I much rather prefer Marty and Darcy's approach to music. Collecting is fun! Everything doesn't have to be equally good as the first pioneering albums, but there's still something to enjoy. Usually. And bands can both evolve or stay about the same from birth to death. (A lot of painters did only small variations on the exact same subject their whole career.) It's also important to recognise at what point one became fan of a band. Some people will only accept the early material I guess, and can't/won't enjoy anything else, which is kind of sad... Not every movie is a 10, but it's still possible to enjoy them.
Funny, MM almost hates his number 6 and down, and Darcy loves his number 12 and up😄 Best be open minded! Well, that's my take on it.

Derrick Ramirez played bass on Demonic. All guitars were played by Petersen. At that time, he wasn't very good at playing guitar leads, that's why there were no guitar solos. That lineup was thrown together for "Testament" after the Billy/Petersen side project called D.F.G. was scrapped.

Ragging on Testament while talking about how good Nirvana and all that stinking shit was. I’m done now.
& why even have a death metal dude review a thrash metal band anyway?? Like, this isn’t Cookie Monster vocals so he won’t get it or appreciate it for what it was! Let me review dumbass suffocation or incantation!!!

Dont think sounding like James Hetfield qualifies as having your own identity much later on he developed one
#1 - Titans of Creation... Best album by far... finally developed a unique style... disagree, it doesn't need any editing
*Better than anything Metallicas done since 1991
    #2 - Ritual
Queensryche - ended when Chris Degramo left
$93 for a cover band... no way
