I really love this concept of creating the same dish two ways in parallel-it's so helpful! I love Hot for Food so now I'll definitely check out Vegan Huggs too!
Your channel has actually kickstarted my healthy diet for 2017 - I'm not even a vegan but half of the meals I prep in a week now are veggie based and you just make it look so fun for me to try out these things! And this is coming from a person from who really didn't eat a lot (or any) vegetables before so thank u
oh my gosh congrats on your health goals for 2017! Mine are similar :) I'm definitely trying to meal prep more often, I feel like it really helps save time while still eating healthy.
Same! It makes the process a lot more fun I think and motivates me to eat more healthy food - if I don't have anything on hand I just get tempted to buy a ready meal or something. Good luck with your health goals! :)
These comments make my day seriously! I grew up eating just a few kinds of veggies (broccoli, asparagus and iceberg salad) and you're so right, learning how to cook with more veggies is so much fun! Glad I can help you along your health journey. :)
Made these last night BA-BAMMM!!! So awesome that my "not yet" vegan hubby was all over them. I made a sauce with coconut cream - lemon/lime juice - minced onions and dill.... yummy! Thanks for making vegan delicious - satisfying and FUN!!
I made the hot for Food ones with artichokes in water and they came out awesome. (Mainly bc I don't like marinated ones) They tasted so much like crab it was crazy! Watching hot for Food is what made me go vegan so her recipes are always a go to for me. 👏🏻
Just made the chikpe and hearts of palm version... they are DELICIOUS! And my picky toddler finished all of his plus his dads plate when he wasn't looking lol... thanks Sara
Hi Sarah, thank you for making my vegan crab cakes. I'm so happy you liked them. I'm a huge artichoke fan, so I'm excited to try out the Hot for Food version. They look delicious! Love your channel :)
These look so yummy! Can you make a video showing some tempeh recipes? I just bought some for the first time and would love some inspiration on how to cook it :)
But in the meantime, my fave is to add a little soy sauce or Bragg's aminos, maple syrup and liquid smoke (or smoked paprika) and crisp it in strips in a pan to make tempeh "bacon."
I've made the hotforfood version and they are soooo crispy and light!! They really satisfy your crabcake craving with the mouth feel. love the honest review!!!!
I just recently discovered your channel a couple of days ago and I love all your videos so much! The recipes you make look really delicious and simple to make and you explain everything really well !!!
I LOVE Hot for Foods krab cakes sooooo so good holy moly! the artichokes make it so good! I have made that recipe probably 8-10x now, and my dad who is an avid meat and cheese guy loved them as a krab "po boy"! Now that I have heard your review from Vegan Huggs tho...I gotta try!!! LOVE these vids Sarah, I am still dying to make the "lox" bagel with the carrots!!!
I really love your channel! I have been vegan for about a year and a half now. I try to not cook with or eat added oils as much as possible. But sometimes it's near impossible. I am so glad you tried the crab cakes without frying them in the oil - I have wanted to make hot for food ones (love them and their recipes!!!) for a while now but knew I would be baking mine and wondered how they would turn out! I would love for you to try some vegan "burger" recipes. I search for those and have yet to find one I love. The comparison is a great way to do the videos! 🤗
I usually just eat the gardein crabless cakes because I'm lazy af, but you've convinced me to try one of these recipes. Way healthier lol. Love your videos!
Sarah's Vegan Kitchen I think I tried almost every gardein product during my vegan transition lol. No shame 🙌😂 They're all amazing. You'll love the fishless fillets!
I love watching your recipe try videos. I was going to make the Hot for Food crab cakes but wasn't sure how it would compare. Glad to see your thoughts. I tried a recipe of theirs before and it didn't exactly turn out the way it was described so I hesitate more now. Plus do more recipe videos. I love your channel and make stuff from here alllll the time
I've never tried making vegan crab cakes. They both sound like good recipes to try out. Thank you for road testing them. You're right about getting out of your comfort zone, it's good to mix it up sometimes, otherwise I'd live on rice and lentils!
i never really liked real crab cakes before i was vegetarian but these look sooo good and i am willing to try these 💖 i love your channel by the way it has helped me alot with finding recipes
Thank you SO much for doing this. I was just pouring over videos and wondering whether to use hearts of palm or artichokes. I was further debating about whether to use frozen or marinated artichoke hearts should I go that route. You confirmed my thoughts that the marinade flavor would come through. I want something that more closely approximates the real thing, so now I know what to do. Yay!
Maybe it's been a long time since I had crab cakes, but I actually made the hot for food crab cakes a week ago or so and I thought it was sooooooo good and I thought it tasted exactly like a crab cake, I loved it. My only issue with it is I didn't refrigerate my mixture so it was crumbly battering it and frying it up, but I loved them so much. They're also much simpler to make and I am all about simplicity loll
The recipe is great! I think maybe I just love artichokes so much I can sense them. Might try it again with the water-packed ones, and maybe add some seaweed.
I have tried the hot for Foods recipe for the crab cakes. I will have to try the other one with the chickpea and hearts of palm. I did like the hot for Foods one, but I added two or three sheets of nori to give it some fishy flavor. Plus I used the artichokes in water and not in the marinade. It did make a difference in a good way
Yum! We've tried the Hot for Food recipe a while back ago. I agree completely that they are more like an artichoke patties. I've been trying to find a good recipe too. I'll have to try the other one! I love that you do these too!
This would be great with a vegan tartar sauce. The Old Bay seasoning kinda makes the crab patties. I'm down with artichoke patties too. I need to get me some of those non-slip baking mats.
I'm not vegan, but I did make the hot for food crab cakes and I loved them! I definitely want to try the other version now, too! :) I love your videos, by the way :)
These look amazingly delicious and easy! Thank you-your vegan channel is the best I’ve ever seen! Adorably genuine and sweetly beautiful (including every guest you have.) I hope you get a million+ subscribers and you could have your own tv show so talented omg😊💜🌟
i found a recipe on pinterest for "chicken nuggets" which i made into patties and thought of crab cakes as soon as i ate them it was a combo of chickpeas and artichoke hearts (in water) with corn meal and garlic powder and panko and the dredge was almond milk with ground flax seed and then the crust a combo of panko and corn meal so good!!
I'd really like to see you try different ultimate healthy, oil-free, sugar free (I preferably only use date sor bananas for sweetening) vegan chocolate cake and/or brownies! I have had such a hard time finding a good recipe. They never become quite as I like it. :/ I do understand it very specific, though!
I have been looking for a good sugar-free, oil-free recipe too for brownies... Tried a few things and they always turn out gummy or bland! Starting to think maybe raw brownies are the way to go for something sort of "healthy." But I will keep experimenting!
Sarah's Vegan Kitchen I have had the exact same results! I think you're right! Raw brownies here I come! I find chocolate banana bread being a pretty good replacement, though. I have a blog, "The Veggienator" and will be posting a recipe of it soon!
I love using the okara (pulp from homemade soymilk production) as crabcake base. Try it out because it is really convincing! Either the recipe from "Marys test kitchen" or from Miyoko Schinners book "vegan pantry"
Ahh I saw the Fab cakes recipe in Miyoko's book -- I was skimming it at the bookstore this past weekend. I might buy it! I have her artisan cheese book.
Both sound good, but I have to try the Vegan Huggs one as that appears to me more like a crab cake. I also liked that you baked them as I would have done the same thing.
I've tested something similar, it was with artichokes. God i hated it so bad... I didn't know i couldn't stand artichokes..... Never too late to learn !
I used to love crab cakes! I was gonna try the Hot for Food one, but it's hard to find chickpea flour where I live so I may try the Vegan Huggs recipe. I've always eaten the Gardein crab cakes, but it didn't taste like a crab cake (though a good substitute). I'm so glad you cooked them in the oven for a healthier alternative, I'm trying to cook healthier (hehe).
You could probably do the Vegan Huggs one with artichokes instead of hearts of palm too, sort of like a cross between that and the Hot For Food. I just found out Gardein makes crab cakes! Mind blown.
I have a recipe that uses tofu, vegan mayo, celery, old bay seasoning, oyster mushrooms, wheat bread crumbs, kelp and onion. They are pretty tasty but I have a hard time keeping them to stay together.. so I may be trying one of your ideas
OMG also i saw soyaki in TJs and had to get it bc of you. BEST DECISION EVER!! i mixed it with some of the TJs sweet chili sauce and marinaded some tempeh in it! i felt like you #goals
I've made the hot for food ones for a vegan family dinner- everyone around me eats meat and they were a huge hit! I definitely added way more old Bay then the recipe called for though and I think that really helped I'm wondering if you could do a mash up of the two of them adding in the Nori to the hot for food one and then maybe adding a little extra liquid maybe that would work?? Also I did not fry mine I baked them in the oven
I really enjoyed the bot for food crab cakes. instead of adding some of the brine from the artichokes I added some mayo. I also added more old boy than what they called for. I want to try the other recipe though. crab cakes were one of my favorite foods before I went vegan.
They both look great! I was just thinking of making "crab" cakes this morning and had no clue how to go about it. The baked ones look surprisingly good. Did you find them dry at all?
A little more dry than the fried ones but still good! I think the mayo/chickpea liquid/artichoke marinade helped them stay moist. I've for sure made veggie patties before that were super chalky and dry. Ick.
I've always been so tentative about vegan seafood, and I've always been scared to try it haha. These look yummy though, I might just have to try them out! Love your videos
Haha I know what you mean. What scares me the most is vegan "duck" that a lot of vegan Chinese places have. Some of them have the fake skin on them...freaks me out.
It looks yummi! I live the concept of the test kitchen. What about trying homemade soy milk? Or a special of plant based milks, perhaps? I havent found my favorite yet. Thanks.
Have you tried the Gardein crab cakes? If so, how do they compare to these recipes? I didn't like the Gardein brand ones, they were mushy and tasted nothing like crab cakes.
The baked ones are what I tried on camera. They were a little less moist than the fried ones, naturally, but I actually preferred them. They were still very crispy!
That is very welcome news! I like you prefer to bake things over frying them due to the fat saturation that occurs with frying. My next step will be putting these on a bun, and making sliders out of them! :) Yum..
I haven't made any faux fish sushi yet; I usually just do avocado and cucumber rolls. But if I could find a way to make vegan spicy "tuna" or california roll...I would be so excited! I might see what I can do.
It was the baked ones I tried on camera! I ate the fried ones afterwards. The baked ones were just as crispy, just slightly less moist than the fried ones. I prefer them though, much lighter. :)
I love your channel Sarah! My request would be an authentic Indian curry. I often use a store bought curry paste and add coconut milk, and although it's good, it doesn't come close to the food served at Indian restaurants. Do you have any tips? Thanks and best of look to your channel!
I will try to make naan soon! With Indian curries, I find I get more "restaurant-style" results when I mix my own curry powder with cumin, turmeric, coriander etc. and garam masala. Many of the bases of their dishes are onion, garlic, ginger and green peppers either pureed or finely diced, and sauteed for a VERY very long time until they are completely caramelized, almost to the point where they are so soft they melt in your mouth. It's really time-consuming but worth it to take this step. Also, Indian restaurants are REALLY not shy with their oil! So sometimes if you try to make the dishes a bit healthier at home, they just aren't the same texturally.
I tried the Hot for Food one and I thought it was too tangy. The brine plus the lemon juice was a lot. So I've altered it since and just season how I would make real crab cakes.
Lol it's kind of hard to explain but I would say it's like a cross between tuna salad and ... a fish stick or chicken nugget? I know that sounds weird, but they usually have celery, onion, mayo and mustard like tuna salad, but the flavor isn't as fishy.
I really love this concept of creating the same dish two ways in parallel-it's so helpful! I love Hot for Food so now I'll definitely check out Vegan Huggs too!
Glad you like it! When I look up recipes I always want to know how they stack up, so it's fun to share my opinions. :D
Me too!
Your channel has actually kickstarted my healthy diet for 2017 - I'm not even a vegan but half of the meals I prep in a week now are veggie based and you just make it look so fun for me to try out these things! Congrats that sounds wonderful! Sarah’s try out recipes always intrigue me, I mean vegan crab cakes????
Not vegan, but love your channel. All the vegan recipes looks so good!
Same. Not even a vegetarian, but her videos are really good, and vegan cooking is such an interesting science.
same!
Well, ever dollar spent on plants is a vote to save a life! Plus her recipes are really amazing! I highly suggest trying some!
Made these last night BA-BAMMM!!! So awesome that my "not yet" vegan hubby was all over them. I made a sauce with coconut cream - lemon/lime juice - minced onions and dill.... yummy! Thanks for making vegan delicious - satisfying and FUN!!

Yeah I love Lauren so much! She seems really cool.
Thanks for the genius recipe! I have already used the chickpea/hearts of palm mixture again to make a mock-tuna salad. So good!
I use it for a mock tuna too. :)
These look so yummy! Can you make a video showing some tempeh recipes? I just bought some for the first time and would love some inspiration on how to cook it :)
For sure! Must admit I've been eating just tofu lately, so it will be nice to mix it up with tempeh again.
But in the meantime, my fave is to add a little soy sauce or Bragg's aminos, maple syrup and liquid smoke (or smoked paprika) and crisp it in strips in a pan to make tempeh "bacon."
I've made the hotforfood version and they are soooo crispy and light!! They really satisfy your crabcake craving with the mouth feel. love the honest review!!!!

i knew the vegan huggs one was gonna be better because of the addition of nori. i really wanna try this!
This recipe is so creative! and it looks so good!!!
I'm making the Vegan Huggs recipe tonight! So excited to try it!
I went to a restaurant in LA that served jackfruit crab cakes. Probably the most amazing vegan crab cakes I've ever had!
Gotta get my hands on some jackfruit! Might stop by an Asian market this weekend. :)
I make my vegan tuna with chick peas ,so i really excited to try the chick pea version of the crab cakes.
thanks SassyVegan
I usually just eat the gardein crabless cakes because I'm lazy af, but you've convinced me to try one of these recipes. Way healthier lol. Love your videos!
Whoa I didn't even know Gardein made those! I still have yet to try their fishless fillets -- I gotta get on that.
Sarah's Vegan Kitchen I think I tried almost every gardein product during my vegan transition lol. No shame 🙌😂 They're all amazing. You'll love the fishless fillets!
How do you do it!! You always amaze me lol
:) Youdabest. Also, finally finally finally sitting down to film the tag tomorrow to upload this weekend.
I love watching your recipe try videos. I was going to make the Hot for Food crab cakes but wasn't sure how it would compare. Glad to see your thoughts. I have fooled my family with the Hot for food one, where they thought it was fish cakes.
I've never tried making vegan crab cakes. They both sound like good recipes to try out. Thank you for road testing them. You're right about getting out of your comfort zone, it's good to mix it up sometimes, otherwise I'd live on rice and lentils!

glad I could help! that's exactly why i make these kind of recipe showdowns. :)
I made the hot for food ones and everyone loved them, but you are right no fish taste. I will try the vegan huggs version, sounds great 😀😀😀
Maybe it's been a long time since I had crab cakes, but I actually made the hot for food crab cakes a week ago or so and I thought it was sooooooo good and I thought it tasted exactly like a crab cake, I loved it. would love to see an amazing, tasty recipe for tomato basil creamy soup. have only found a great version one place so far, and i've been to many!
Thanks for doing recipe comparisons :) I spend unnecessary time in the grocery store looking up different versions of the same recipes as I shop
Exactly my dilemma!
Yum! We've tried the Hot for Food recipe a while back ago. I agree completely that they are more like an artichoke patties. I've been trying to find a good recipe too. I'll have to try the other one! I love that you do these too!

aw thank you so much!!!
Sarah's Vegan Kitchen 💖💫
Thank you so much, this is an oldie but a goodie!!!! Thanks for doing both and a baking version too!!!!
i found a recipe on pinterest for "chicken nuggets" which i made into patties and thought of crab cakes as soon as i ate them it was a combo of chickpeas and artichoke hearts (in water) with corn meal and garlic powder and panko and the dredge was almond milk with ground flax seed and then the crust a combo of panko and corn meal so good!!
oh and chopped onions
That sounds so delicious! I definitely want to try that! Thanks so much!

These look amazing!!! I love heart of palm
The perfect recipe for crab cakes definitely have to try these I really like the ones with the nori 👌👌👌 THANKS FOR SHARING 😊😊
Both recipes you tried looked really tasty. I’m going to try making crab cakes with jackfruit. 🤞
The artichoke cakes are great! I'm thinking about serving them at my wedding. They feel fancy enough for that, to me at least!
Ah congrats on getting married. :) And I agree, they would make a great appetizer for a gathering like that.
Tamago try making it with jackfruit! It doesn’t really taste strong so you can flavour it however you want (:
I like your condensed video of Hot For Food's recipe.. it was easier to follow. Great shots and editing! Very helpful!
I want to try the second one with the nori
I'm not vegan but I love watching your videos. Good recipes and you're really beautiful!
Just discovered your channel! I used to watch your makeup tutorials, and was excited to see you're a vegan. 😊
Omg I can't believe that haha. Sometimes I miss how simple RUclips was back then -- I filmed everything on a webcam. :)
I've made zuchinni "crab" cakes that were pretty convincing! I'll definitely have to try the chickpea one.
Ooh I haven't seen the zucchini ones. That sounds good!
Mind blown.
I just made the Hearts of palm "crab" cake. Oh My World they are the best. I cooked in a Air fryer. Keeping this recipe.
I saw a recipe for "pullet pork" with jack fruit but I wonder if it would work with artichokes
I have tried the chickpea and heart of palm recipe. My husband couldn't believe it wasn't a real crab cake!
Yessss soyaki is life! When I run out I feel empty inside haha.
I never tried crab cakes when I wasnt vegan so I wouldn't be able to judge those, but they look yummy!! :)
Ah we've made these before. I loooooove them so much. Yours look amazing
Thanks I'm going to try it.
Hi cant find Hearts of palm in Australia... any alternative for that?
Hey! which hair color did you use?! thanks! love your videos! :) im looking for a vegan one ofcourse
I think you're right! The nori for sure made a difference.
I worked at Disney and we did a carbless crab cake and they were really good
I really enjoyed the bot for food crab cakes. instead of adding some of the brine from the artichokes I added some mayo. I also added more old boy than what they called for. I want to try the other recipe though. crab cakes were one of my favorite foods before I went vegan.
Mayo instead of the brine was probably a good call!
I want to try the second ones! i love nori
Ick.
liked and subscribed! I love your channel and the food you create- it's so inspiring! Xx
wow, these all look so good! really smart to bake them too :)
_Finally_ someone else who dislikes parsley, woohoo! #cilantroftw The combination of chickpeas and heart of palm looks delicious. :)
For some reason I only like parsley in falafel! Everywhere else I can't stand it.
I hate cilantro and usually sub it with mint.
I Honestly want to change my diet and seafood is a much thing in Maryland especially crabs so I'm excited to try this recipe
I will try making the palm heart version but with artichokes.
im not even vegan but i love your videos and youre so pretty!
3.1k👍‼️I’ve used jackfruit for “crabless crab” cakes with 2 “flax seed eggs” and my own breadcrumbs for binding .😋‼️
instead of artichoke hearts can i use banana hearts?
Hey Sarah i was wondering if u could make quinoa and spinach and tofu soup
I've always been so tentative about vegan seafood, and I've always been scared to try it haha. These look yummy though, I might just have to try them out! Love your videos
Haha I know what you mean. What scares me the most is vegan "duck" that a lot of vegan Chinese places have. Some of them have the fake skin on them...freaks me out.
What were the results of the baked ones?
I am looking for a tasty falafel recipe!! 😁please! Lol. Great video 👍🏻
It looks yummi! I live the concept of the test kitchen.
What about trying homemade soy milk? Or a special of plant based milks, perhaps? I havent found my favorite yet.
Thanks.
*love
This would be so much fun. I bought some organic soybeans months ago for just this purpose, but I never got around to it. Maybe this weekend!
Anyone knows a good way of making mock tuna?
Add ground kelp..seaweed to these ideas
Have you tried the Gardein crab cakes? If so, how do they compare to these recipes? I didn't like the Gardein brand ones, they were mushy and tasted nothing like crab cakes.
you are gorgeous, love your style and that blazing hair! i am totally making these with the chickpeas and baking them, these sound delicious!
I want to try the one with seaweed- do you know if being allergic to lobster, shrimp and crab if seaweed could possibly have any bit of those on it?
I am not 100% sure but from the quick Google search I just ran, it seems to be safe.
These look really great! I am very interested in making the Vegan Huggs version.
How did the baking vs. frying turn out?
The baked ones are what I tried on camera. They were a little less moist than the fried ones, naturally, but I actually preferred them. They were still very crispy!
That is very welcome news! I like you prefer to bake things over frying them due to the fat saturation that occurs with frying.
My next step will be putting these on a bun, and making sliders out of them! :) Yum..
Sarah!!! I love you girl! Is there such recipes for vegan sushi?
I haven't made any faux fish sushi yet; I usually just do avocado and cucumber rolls. But if I could find a way to make vegan spicy "tuna" or california roll...I would be so excited! I might see what I can do.
Sarah's Vegan Kitchen Yes you are awesome! Maybe you can make a vegan salmon roll using the same recipe you did with the carrot locks yummm
Have a good day as well Sarah! :)
aww you didnt try the oven baked ones haha i was hoping for the taste test on those too ;)
It was the baked ones I tried on camera! I ate the fried ones afterwards. The baked ones were just as crispy, just slightly less moist than the fried ones. I prefer them though, much lighter. :)
OMG REALLY OK YAY
Ooh these would be so yummy in tacos!
Would love to try the chickpea crab cakes but what can I use instead of palm hearts as I can not find them where I live. Thanks
You can also use artichoke hearts or jackfruit.
I was legit craving crabcakes for the first time in years yesterday! Manifest Destiny!!! lol
Haha that's funny. I always liked crab cakes if they were served at a party, but I never had a random craving for them.
Can I use Artichoke in your second recipe?
What about combining those two recipes?
try brushing or spraying the cakes with oil before baking for a nicer finished crust.
I love your videos!! Big hug from Africa
Wow, Africa! Thanks so much for watching. :D
I love your channel Sarah! My request would be an authentic Indian curry. I often use a store bought curry paste and add coconut milk, and although it's good, it doesn't come close to the food served at Indian restaurants. Do you have any tips? Thanks and best of look to your channel!
PS; and since you;re good at baking, maybe your also have recipe for (garlic) naan bread
So sometimes if you try to make the dishes a bit healthier at home, they just aren't the same texturally.
i think u can also use zucchini instead of hearts of palm
I wonder if you could combine elements from each of the recipe to make an awesome recipe?
I was thinking this!
Sarah's Vegan Kitchen
Ring me when you make the new recipe. P. S. I am so grateful for vegan recipes. It is the wave of the future.
The way you say shallots is soooo funny:) im from the uk btw so I say it like Gordon.
Haha I literally always hear his voice in my head when I use shallots. Can't help it.
I tried the Hot for Food one and I thought it was too tangy. The brine plus the lemon juice was a lot. So I've altered it since and just season how I would make real crab cakes.
I enjoy your taste test videos; they are truly helpful in deciding which recipes to try myself. Could you please try some cheese recipes for us?
I've got a cheese video coming up this week! :)
the second one looked real real good. send me a few in the mail 😘
I never had crab cakes or anything like that prior to going vegan...what is the taste supposed to be like???
Lol it's kind of hard to explain but I would say it's like a cross between tuna salad and ... a fish stick or chicken nugget? I know that sounds weird, but they usually have celery, onion, mayo and mustard like tuna salad, but the flavor isn't as fishy.
