I am so glad that I came across your channel. I have been curious about getting my Vagabond 17 to self steer and the rigging you are using looks like just the thing. Thanks and I look foreword to seeing your next adventure.

Thanks for info. I had a Precision 18 which had a Tiller Tamer. I could set it to hold course for 10-15 minutes in relatively constant wind conditions. The key is to set it so it slips to allow roundup if a gust hits, you don’t want it over tight!
I sold that boat and now have a Montgomery 17 which I just launched (June 23’) this tiller also has a tamer so I’ll see how this one behaves but i ordered the suggested book and plan on adding your method for my mostly single handed sailing on Lake Erie.
M17 Strawannza which sailed So Cal to New Zealand had a wind vane you can see pictures if you search the name.

Good explanation, thanks. I've only tried sheet-to-tiller using the jib sheet in very gentle wind, & in those conditions that seemed to work fine. Need to try the mainsheet version.
