  • I try to break my jinx with Waxwings and finally get a good view of one after over decade since my last good views, covering 2 attempts in Chafford Hundred, Essex, with some bonus views of Foxes!
The following (and better!) encounter I had with Waxwings is here: • Waxwings AND Short Ear...

Hi Neil. I’m glad you finally had your Waxwing fix! It would not have been right if you had drawn a blank in such a good “Waxwing year”. I had my Waxwing fix with the long-staying Colchester birds in early January. By the way, absolutely gorgeous Red Foxes too. Richard.

Love those foxes. I reckon sunny days in February are a good time to catch them sunbathing! Glad you caught up with some Waxies! 👍🤓👍

Yes was a relief. I actually walked all the way down to the foxes again on the next visit but they were not there that day.

Brilliant! I loved seeing the foxes so close up. Pleased for you that you eventually got some waxwings - great to see them on the aerial - a bit different from most other pics I've seen of them on trees and bushes.

The Dorset Bird Group site is peppered with photos of the Upton Eight. Eight waxwings feeding at glamerouse sites (Asda car park) around Upton, Poole. Off to Arne this morning for more delights with my new setup. Nikon Z8, 600mm f6.3 and 1.4 TC. I am loving the stills results I am getting and the extra reach of the 45mp sensor. My OM-1, 30pmm &1.4TC is now my summer rig (all rounder) for insects and birds. Looking forward to your next posting.

Excellent. Loved that the only other upload for these guys featuring them on an aerial is with your good self. The grooming fox pair is a truly wonderful piece of footage - this, I can assure you, is a very infrequent and seasonally sensitive piece of behaviour. Outside of immature individuals, adult foxes are almost totally solitary/autonomous in behaviour even within the family group. Hardly ever being tactile with each other which is a big marker of separation between them and other canid cousins such as wolves who often mutually groom and of course hunt together. Just now of course - and for the last few weeks, the only call to bond is upon them so you can get these rarely caught glimpses of dog and vixen being close and tactile. Again, terrifically enjoyable and high quality stuff, ace dude. Si.

Thanks Simon, I speculated it might be related to the mating season, but wondered if it was last years cubs as I know they can hang around for a few months longer than normal, and even help with next years young in some cases I believe?

@@ukwildlife You probably already know this but yes, absolutely family units have subordinate adults generally from previous years youngsters. Tend to be predominantly female though not always. Post Autumn and into Winter any tactile behaviour between them dissipates pretty quickly, certainly by breeding season from the radio tracking tracking of Brighton and Bristol individuals they're autonomous nearly all the time. Bolstering defence of the territory and assisting with the new litter. The bonus being of course, especially with the vixens, that they are perfectly in line to become dominant as soon as an opportunity arises. I've actuality seen a very old (7yrs) alpha female surrender the role to her 1yr old vixen from the previous years litter. With dominant/alpha females screaming for attention just now it's a real soap opera of males being being true to territory and defending but then also, often, straying. Gene warfare lol. Either way tactility suddenly goes through the roof. I've seen it last up until a few weeks after the cubs are above ground but then it generally dissipates and by July when all assisted feeding of cubs is through completely diminished. You won't find footage of grooming adults hardly anywhere, you have a real gem there. I have 10 mins or so of dog and vixen curled together and sleeping just the once. Dimpsy fading light though - not like your awesome low front lit footage.

Calling the police about the trespassers would have been better than cutting down the tree or bush ... how sad. On a happy note, enjoyed the rest of the video.

Yes true, if they would have attended such an incident and its a bit of an overreaction to cut it down. Equally though the 2 people leaning over the wall should have been more respectful.
