What's even more heartbreaking in the context of the war is that there are STILL a lot more horrendous battles to come (the Battle of Arras took place TWO days after the events of 1917): Passchendaele, Cambrai, the German Spring Offensive etc., throwing into doubt all the characters we've encountered throughout.
That’s the point of the end of this scene. General MacKenzie makes the disappointing (albeit true) point that just because Schofield managed to relay orders to stop the attack, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he changed much in the long run. If anything, he just merely delayed the deaths of many of these men involved. The general had hoped that today would’ve been the beginning of the end, only to be met with word that nothing was going to end anytime soon. Both men are right, here. That’s the solemn beauty of it.
This scene was just so powerful. One soldier who wasn't going to let anything stop him by taking the order to the Colonel. He knew that he had a mission to prevent further bloodshed and stop what was essentially a slaughterhouse. He was bloody brilliant in the film. 1917 for me was actually really entertaining and the cast was amazing. Benedict yet again delivering brilliant voice acting. I imagine that all high ranking officers were completely oblivious to how suicidal the frontal attacks from commonwealth troops were becoming during the early years of The Great War. And yet, all it takes sometimes is the will of single man to do whatever was neccessary and to accomplish the mission! You can all have your opinions as always but I loved the film! Sam Mendes yet again delivering
Not-fun fact, modern plastic/reconstructive surgery was developed in direct response to a need. Some of these guys were getting non fatal but absolutely DEVASTATING facial injuries. Harold Gillies was the pioneering surgeon… he would go on to give *5000 men* their lives back.

Why is that girl crying top right 2nd she is so dramatic
Oh, I don't know, maybe because it's a very emotionally charged scene that the entire film has been building up to, perhaps
whats wrong with having emotion? u're weird af lil bro😂

Why is she crying
She really dislikes violence. She cries during most movies for different reasons.

The 1917 was boring, nothing like SPR.
You wanted an SPR rip-off? 1917 was incredible, seeing it in cinemas would change your mind. Also of course it's not like SPR wrong war
that reactor crying is overdramatic. She is acting way too hard, and it shows.
