John Galliano In Conversation With Nick Knight On The Future Of Fashion

  • John Galliano joins Nick Knight in conversation to discuss creating S.W.A.L.K. , a fashion film cum documentary for Maison Margiela Artisanal A/W 20. Here Galliano describes mourning the fashion show as we know it, and creating a new blueprint for fashion's future with Knight. The frequent collaborators discuss their over two decade long artistic relationship, and how this led to a new imagining of Maison Margiela. Describing fittings with Galliano’s muses, the atmosphere on Knight’s set and illuminating the core values of the house to the world via film, Galliano details a desire for transparency and new beginnings for the Maison.
Made in collaboration with SHOWstudio, S.W.A.L.K. opens the doors of the Margiela Atelier like never before via a myriad of film and surveillance techniques such as GoPro’s on the heads of the petite mains and drones flying into the studio. The process documentary features Knight's signature image manipulation and brings in such disparate references as the 80s club scene Blitz Kids, the veiled marble statues of the 1800s, and mysterious happenings in the Margiela Maison.

Definitely one of the greats. I’m loving what he is doing at Maison Margiela now too. He has shown such a versatility to his aesthetic and vision. It was his imagination and story-telling that always set him apart. His craftsmanship, cutting and sense of history, arts and culture are also sublime.

Sneaked into his shows in Paris, back then as a student. When this was still possible, in the late nineties.
It was amazing. Theatre, cinema,.. not just models walking down a line.
Clothes were colourful, immensely creative and handcrafted masterpieces.
The Cleopatra/ Egypt show for example. Nowadays ppl would shout “cultural appropriation”.😱
I call it cultural exchange. And i love it. 😍

Galliano, you're the number one. We will never forget what you did at Dior's house. Collection after collection you are also taking Margiela to the next level. It's nice to see that you feel now more comfortable to speak in public. Hope you are well deep inside, beautiful soul.

For anyone who likes paraphrased points of discussion:
    - Recognize the power of music in the creative process. It can affect both designer and muse during cuttings and fittings.
    - More suppression, more fantasy. (The political landscape can be suppressive. How do you respond, fantasy wise?)
    - Creating a blueprint for a new collection and the work that goes into it in a new way is appealing.
    - Let others see how you work. Transparency is a good form of messaging. It allows the reinforcement of ethics, everything a brand or house believes in...ex. sustainability, regicla (? ) [ If anyone knows that term JG stated, please comment! ]
    - Talking about what you do with passion and knowledge combined is engaging and illuminating. Can totally revolutionize the way someone perceives your fashion.
    - Be who you truly are when in the light.
    - NK asks JG if the cameras and its voyeurism changed the designs at all. JG says not the design itself, but more so with the swatches and their fabric allocation. Concept already took shape, but working with the beauty of all the fabrics doesn't often register in real time. With the cameras however, it did. JG saw from that extended perspective and perceived them to be more divine. Fleeting seconds and moments that are missed when under the runway schedule are now better felt, captured and less taken for granted. There is further enhancement and liberation of the fabric. The film captures how a simple technique can greatly transform it.
    - NK seeks the artistic interpretation, thought process, and mind and heart behind any designer, especially JG.
    - Energy, energy, energy! All creative energies on deck can lead to spiritual moments. It's like a journey, beginning with a pedestrian rhythm, slow perhaps difficult, but then it takes off and becomes a very spiritual, metaphysical state where creation feels natural and not hard.
    - It's all about connection. When the teams are balanced, especially mentally, there is more potential for joy and connection because all are in the right mindset, in the right place, and at the right time.
    - This energy fuels the fantasy.
    - So much so, that even the muses can then join and take part. Can get lost in the make believe world where childlike energy is at hand.
    - In order for different, collected energies to be released from everyone on set, there must be TRUST. It is a chosen family.
    - Trust creates the space for the entire team to feel the connection and allows it to be magical. Provides the muses a new opportunity to embrace a new role, one they've always wanted, but never knew.
    - You see with your heart when on set. It is during playback or checking photos where the eye opens.
    - During the creative process, it is crucial to incorporate play. Play equates to liberation. Deconstruct, reconstruct, try upside down, inside out. You don't need illustrations to make a design. What matters is the concept and idea.
    - Once you push your idea outwards into reality, never stop building on it. Doesn't matter how it looks on first try, keep pushing the idea out.
    - With fabric and cuts, you never stop learning. There's always a physical dialogue with the tools of our trade.
    - Pour energy into this pool of creative freedom. Then things pick up naturally and add themselves.
    - If you let go and play, then so can your muses. It is important for them to assimilate their experiences. To feel the shaking after what is done and to talk about it, rather than them being rushed to the next job.
    - Defaults of clothing can lead to a whole new way of cutting and exploring. Ancestral hand me downs are good because they involve history and heritage. It is nice to point that out. An individual's character can greatly influence the design and work of John Galliano.
If you've made it this far, thanks for being here. Peace

IF one were to compare him to a painter/artist they might compare him with Salvador Dali, as to that which he imagines in his mind, mental processing system is quite unique, intrinsically interesting, intriguing. As such, the conversation about fashion changing, the industry changes, the changing of the individual/guard, all that which reflects how change occurs and while individual comparison is what happens, an art student painting their own portrait or a design student making their own clothes, is as it is. It might not be a JG design, it might not be a SD painting but it is an original. Whenever the population finds/discovers a talented creative they appreciate the individual all the while finding a sense of disappointment they can not be cloned. As it is, as it were, they can not be cloned. Everyone can still appreciate art, the arts, the artists, the creative, the creativity. It is possible, as so long as it is in order, as it should be, ethically. Humane, humanity. As JG is busy making a legendary legacy of himself. 😊

  • @ittonohara5327
    @ittonohara5327 4 года назад

    I was thinking about it.
This can start very strange kind of thinking.
    I found the anchor in
    the model that felt liberated.
First association I got after that, was the video by David Lynch
    Bird of flames
    ruclips.net/video/gGjJFRPtdDI/видео.html
Entering the world of the lady with the face gown.
    How did I get there.
    The stations that led there.
It started in Death Valley, CA.
    Zapriskie point.
    The film by Anthonioni.
    Blow up.
    David Bailey.
The portrait of Cecil Beaton by David Bailey.
The alta moda collection of Dolce and Gabbana.
    S.W.A.L.K.
What I took with me: I learned, that Cecil Beaton got an Oscar for my fair lady.
That this is his story too. He too got into High society -¨through fashion.
There is a tremendous amount of his energy in this film.
He too had to undergo a transformation to get there as Elisa Dolittle had to do.
Elisa Dolittle entered first at Ascot with a tremendous hat on her head.
    White- and little less black.
    The beginning of her transformation.
Bailey showed old Beaton in his beloved garden, he knew from childhood on, playing around with his white straw hat.
Familiar to the lady with the huge white hat at Ascot, but quite the opposite, what the transformation process ist concerned.
Bringing Beaton back. To nature. To roots.
At the alta moda collection of Dolce and Gabbana there was a hillariously huge straw hat, which I found very funny, but did not know why.
After this interview I knew. This hat can be considered as the result of the fusion of Audrey Hepburns Ascot hat in my fair lady and Cecil Beatons garden straw hat.
In S.W.A.L.K. what irritated me, were the ballet-like shoes made out of Chiffon.
Ballet is such a torture for the feet, especially the big toes, ballet looks so elegant, light and easy and is such a torture to the feet.
Maybe what David Bailey did to Beaton
David Knight did now to John Galliano
But it is not about hats
    it is about shoes
Whatever S.W.A.L.K may actually mean, to people not having a clue, it is about some sort of walking...
    etc
    etc
    etc.
