Wow. The fact that the puppets have masks! Fascinating! For some reason this has more humanity than many performances I've seen. I would absolutely love to see something like this in Chicago. So poignant, so touching.
You're right. An inescapable part of being human is presenting a mask to the world, and this staging works on that uncomfortable truth. It's a wonderful concept for an opera about illusion.

This means that dramatic realism is less important, but rather it is important to create situations in which different emotions can come to the fore. These operas strongly captured the imagination of the audience, not least because of the ability of the baroque opera stage to be 'spectacular'. This certainly applies to Alcina, the story of a sorceress on an enchanted island. There seems to be an analogy here with the story of Odysseus and his men with the sorceress Circe, told in Homer's Odyssey.
Like Picasso, the mask maker is able to isolate the facial features that convey an emotion isolate them and then exaggerate them, to give the mask the power of one of his portraits(e,g. the crying woman). Brilliant and so powerful. Beautiful singing too. No vocal blemishes. Give me more of this!

Más o menos ese fue el cuento que me hicieron, porque yo no estuve allí ni fui testigo de los hechos...... Ese fue el cuento que me hizo un Tío que acostumbraba a andar con un tal caballero de la Mancha.
