For me, it’s not the size of the needle at all. It’s not even the pain from the needle. For me it’s the entire procedure. It’s the cleaning of the arm, the tourniquet etc. it’s not the pain, its the knowledge that someone is going to stab me. My fight or flight kicks in. I won’t fight but I may get out of there.

How you can tell I'm afraid of needles:
    Crying loud af
    Shaking really fast
Trying to avoid being touched by a needle
    Why i'm afraid:
    It's really pointy
They do it really slow so it brings suspension
    It brings me pain
(Crying distracts me from the pain)

To everyone who’s afraid of needles:
Stop saying you’re childish or you’re too old to be afraid! Fear is something everyone needs to survive. If we weren’t afraid of anything, we’d all be dead. Needles are a perfectly normal fear, especially from a bad experience. I had an awful bloodwork experience and I’ve been so afraid of needles and blood ever since. It’s a scary environment and it’s so normal for people to cry. Tons of people, including myself, overthink shots and that’s why we’re afraid. That’s completely normal too. How can you not? Just know that you’re going to be okay. Your feelings are valid. You can do this.

  • @marinavelaz

You, ma’am, are a God-Send. I have an extreme needle and blood phobia. It started with a traumatic experience when I was a baby; my mom (an RN as well) explained that a nurse stuck me about twenty times in the arm before realizing it was supposed to go in my foot. (I don’t remember it, but trauma can remain in your subconsciousness forever.)
My life has consisted of going cotton-eared, turning GREEN, throwing up, passing out, and crying any time I get injections or even just talk about or see blood and needles.
In my short adult life, I have gotten a lot better and have found ways to ease the symptoms: informing the nurse, distractions, bringing a loved one to hold my hand, looking away, laying down before and after, playing injection games on my phone beforehand, lots of praying, taking a motion sickness pill, etc. It’s nurses like you who help me get better. I have had so many people and medical professionals laugh, roll their eyes, and make me feel so childish and pathetic, which just make it 10 times worse - I already know it’s completely ridiculous and debilitating and don’t need reminding!
Thank you for being kind towards my fellow phobics and educating your fellow medical professionals. We appreciate it. ❤️

They'll end up treating you like a child, which ends up making it worse. It's embarrassing enough without someone who understands this fear is illogical.

I remember I had a male doctor tell me I had to “get over it because you’ll be getting poked a lot when you’re older” , but I had multiple female nurses help me calm down before getting the shot. Their go to was either using a shot blocker or always telling me the needle size was used for babies which made me feel the tiniest of bit better. I’m 22 now and I’m still afraid of them now because when I was 14-16 I had a doctor literally stab a needle in my arm which felt like she scraped my bone. I’ve always been scared of needles ever since I could remember.

I remember I was 7 years old when I built up the courage to deal with needles. I still shed tears, but I didn’t break down crying as I had before. I was telling the nurse that I had a toy needle in the Fisher Price doctors kit at home. That was a big breakthrough for me to deal with needles that well. I did have one time when I was at a blood drive, and my blood pressure was a bit high because I saw the needles were quite a bit bigger than what I was used to. They looked like they were 3/16” thick. I just remember they were bigger. I haven’t done a blood drive for a long time now. I can sympathize more with the fear of needles more than I can with fear of drills at the dentist office. They numb you! I think it’s the winding and squealing of the dental tools and blood that gets to people. I’ve had my share of cavities and fillings like most people, plus one ingrown molar extraction. That was interesting. I’m usually interested in the drill bits they are using or the jaws of life they used to pull my molar. I was bummed out I didn’t get to see it before they threw it out. I don’t like when I have cavities because I know they will put pressure on me to floss. They never told me what happened to the cool Turkish dentist I had before, and caught me off guard when this big, Jay Leno looking guy came in. I was like… “Where’s Dr. Sarlak?”

Years back, I didn't even have my blood tested because how terrified I am thinking about it, so past few years i mustered the courage and took a blood test. I tried not to think about it but I can't! That feeling..of the needle getting closer and closer to your soft skin and pierce through it, really send shivers and cold sweats. I hope anyone who is suffer from this, good luck and take care

I'm terrified of needles. There's a reason why I don't have tattoos. I had to get blood work done to get tested for R.A and nurse stuck me 7 times in the hand to look for my tiny veins. I told them outright that I am terrified of needles, like cold sweat, crying, terrified of them. I cried in the room afterwards and have not been back to that office since then, my NP is a darling. I told her about my phobia and she accommodates me for it!

I am 18 years old,I just came back from my covid vaccination centre and I wasn't able to get the vaccine because I started crying and moving away from the injection. You don't know how much I wish I had a nurse like you, all my life I've come across the nurses telling me "Oh you're such a baby" or "I've never come across any patient like you" or "you're a grown up why would you be afraid of a needle?" and my parents always just want me to go in take the injection and come out like other people but they do not understand how hard it is for me to just see that needle. NO ONE UNDERSTANDS MY FEAR EVERYONE JUST LAUGHS AND IT HAS LITERALLY INCREASED MY PHOBIA.

My needle phobia developed after I was mishandled at 8 years old, the nurse was counting down numbers and she stuck it in before the countdown was over I guess thinking that I wouldn’t notice she’d done anything, but me being that young had put my whole trust in her and she broke it because I was sincerely waiting for 1. The same day I had to get a catheter :,)
since then anytime I even think of a needle it’s a hard cringe, and if i talk about them it’s a hard cry, if I see them it’s nausea in my stomach and fear in my heart(also accompanied by sobbing) and if it’s coming at me then it’s time to run

I just walked out of a blood test because I couldn't cope. I can just about tolerate a needle shot that goes into muscle tissue (also helps a lot if I can't see it), but going into a vein to draw blood is the absolute worst for me. The doctor wasn't very helpful or sympathetic and told me that I'd had the same test 6 months ago. All I can say is that the other doctor must have done a brilliant job talking me around. This doctor, not so much.

I have trauma from blood draws, and although it’s gotten better over the years, I’m still going to provide my insight on how to potentially keep a patient calm.
    1. No matter how irritating It may be, DO NOT let them know you are getting irritated, they are probably just as irritated with themselves, if not more.
    2. If you are getting irritated/have to move on to a different patient, let them know calmly.
    3. If they are getting antsy to the point of needing to hold them down, then maybe have them come back another time. I would only get more hysterical if I was held down in any capacity.
    4. Do NOT discount their feelings in anyway, I’m just as mad at myself
These are based on my own experiences, but I think they hold up pretty okay in most circumstances.
I’m aware nursing is a thankless job, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make someone comfortable in a retraumatizing situation.

You sound amazing but in my case I prefer to just get it over with.
    1. Don’t show me the needle and maybe numb me.
    2. Don’t talk to me about anything else, or at least don’t make me talk, because I’m 300% focused on getting it over with.
    3. Let me know a second before you insert the needle so I can take a breath along with the needle going in.
    4. Make it go as quickly as possible from start to finish, after it’s done, I’m relieved and relaxed again, not before or during.
    That’s all.
I have a huge needle phobia.
And thank you for caring. ❤️

    NEEDLE STORY/OPINIONS
It's not the needle or the pain. It doesn't hurt. it just feels sooooo wrong? The prolonged feeling of "theres a needle in me". When it's in my arm, i feel like I'm going to vomit instantly, I've fainted often and once had gone temporarily blind. (About 45 sec-minute) I've experience the vasovagal reflex alot too. It's the worst feeling ever. Also, I dont have a fear of hospitals or surgery but I do have a fear of an i.v. being in my arm after waking up. I developed a coping mechanism, which doesn't actually help much. I once went to give blood with a best friend while trying to overcome my fear and she sang disney songs to me. Then I fainted. Now, whenever I interact with needles, I reflexively start singing whatevers in my mind (last time it was the spongebob F.U.N. song) and promptly hyperventilate and then usually faint.

as someone with Trypanophobia. NEVER USE THE WORD NEEDLE OR INJECTION shot. use something like administering medication etc. also it would be nice if the doctors have a little note saying that i have this condition in my medical file so they don't use the trigger words around me. for me smaller and pointier the needle the worst. I rather be knowingly fooled than seeing the syringe that's gonna stab me. if it was between a knife vs a tiny needle. ill choose the knife. This may seem a bit odd but I used to have debilitating needle phobia, I am not exaggerating I missed many immunisations in school becasue of it as I had a bad experience as a child with an iv in my hand. Since curing my phobia I have had injections and ivs in the hand and arm. This may seem really simple or stupid but what I did to cure it was compare it to a paij I already knew, maybe this is tmi but I pop pimples on my face all the time and some times I really have to put alot of pressure and it is very painful, but I wouldn't flinch at doing it (I know I'm not meant to don't come at me, i have no scars don't worry) once I correlated the two in my head sit really helped for some reason you are basically breaking the skin in the same way and the pimple popping is actually much more painful. Try to compare it with a pain you already know

I am absolutely terrified of needles. I have been since birth pretty much. When I was little I’d end up getting stabbed up to SEVENTEEN times just for Bloodtests. My veins are hiders as well as movers! I would always procrastinate when it came to immunizations and local freezing. My Covid shots went okay, I was shivering while we were in the lineup but the docs ended up talking me down and distracted me. It helped that I had my service dog Jester with me. I could tell by his posture if he did or didn’t trust them. Shots 1 and 3 were administered by a doctor, went so smooth i couldn’t believe it. Number 2 was delivered by a nurse and I could immediately tell before she even touched me that he didn’t trust her, by his posture. Sure enough, she treated me like I was a human dart board and laughed when I jumped. I’m having major surgery 2 weeks from today and my doctor wants me to have an IV while awake. I warned him point blank that the last time I went through that it was pure h*ll. He suggested it be started by a professional anesthesiologist. I’m more nervous about being awake while getting the IV than I am about the actual surgery!
I DID somewhat conquer my fear of needles by getting my first tattoo in January. I was numb and didn’t feel a thing.

For me it’s not the pain, it’s the experience of knowing that a needle is going into your skin and could possibly not come out. What I mean by not came out is I personally have extreme trypanophobia and when I think of needles I cry (I’m crying rn) and when I get shot I tense everything up I kick, scream, cry, and have both a panic and anxiety attack at the same time. The doctors seem really pissed and tell me to just relax but it’s not that easy. I’ve tried to Relax but I just can’t. I have to get physically held down to get the shot because I am moving and kicking everything and everywhere to where they can’t give me the shot. I have this fear bc when I was younger I had to get blood tested for the first time ever. I was extremely nervous but I finally let the doc do it (this was before I had a fear of needles) when she stuck the needle in my arm she kept moving it around and re sticking it back in until my mom had to tell her to stop. We had to get a different doctor and I was in the worst pain and I was screaming. So that is why I have a fear of needles it was just a traumatic experience.

I sort of had an opposite experience years ago. I don't have a fear of needles or blood. I went to my doctor for a check-up and the nurse was going to draw blood for tests. First the office had no tourniquets so they improvised one by cutting off a finger of a glove. And then when she does put the needle in she scoffs at me and says, "Ugh! You're one of THOSE who likes to watch."
Bonus: I requested a flu shot and she preps me and she's 1/4" from stabbing me with the shot she quickly pulls her arm back and gasps, "Are you allergic to eggs?"
    My reaction was, "N-n-n-n-n-o-o-o-o-o-o! Why?"
Then she rolled her eyes and explained it had egg albumen.

I had a very bad experience when I was about 7 or 8 years old. I went into the hospital to get a CAT scan and was told numerous of time I wouldn't need to get a needle. My Mum asked numerous of times to the doctors and nurses at the hospital and they all said no needle needed. So I went into the machine and kept perfectly still. After quite some time the machine stopped and the bed started to move out of the machine. I thought I was done. My Mum had to go to work and my Dad took over waiting for me. I then sat on the bed and then suddenly pinned to the bed and told it was needle time. I started screaming and yelling No no no. I was trying to get away from the doctors and nurses grip but they were all ganging up on me. I saw everything what they were doing. They even strapped me to the bed. I then felt the coloured band around my arm and saw the needle sticking into my arm. Ever since then it has been impossible for me to go to the doctor and get a jab. I was diagnosed with PTSD and have been going to hypnotherapists since then just to get any injections. When I go to the doctors I hyperventilate, I faint, U say things like no no no, I get flash back and I can't keep still. It's very embarrassing for I feel ashamed when that happens. What more could I do to try to get over this phobia.
