If Sony ever does bring back Playstation All Stars, I hope they keep the map crossovers. Quite literally some of the most hype shit I've seen in a crossover fighting game. Especially that soundtrack bro 😭
@comicrandomness3289 EXACTLY. The only issue I had was the amount of content you can play in the game, tbh it wasnt a lot. But overall I still think it's an 8/10 game.
I feel like I was one of the few that loved the game to death but didn't like the maps crossing over bc it ruined the soundtrack for that world but also the map it just looked messy I would have rather had a fully dedicated stage for every character
Playstation Allstars Battle Royale is the PERFECT example of an "Over-Hated" game. This was before Smash was effectively finished as a franchise (At least for the time being) and the world was a LITTLE MORE ACCEPTING of "Smash-likes". Before the game even dropped, I distinctly and specifically remember how much hate it accrued for simply TRYING to exist. You couldn't go to reveal or promotional trailers online without the comments being FILLED with livid comments from Smash fans denouncing it as a "Smash clone" and deriding it from the top down. But then the game came out, and it DIDN'T play a whole lot like Smash; it had built in combos and strings and actively encouraged somewhat of a facilitated "Competitive" element (I put this in quotes because in the dev's own words, they WANTED it to be competitive), didn't rely on Ring-Outs as a method for defeating the opponent, Items and stage gimmicks were a little more nuanced and utility centric and its control scheme was not as intuitive as you'd think it would be. None of that mattered though, people went INTO the game expecting it to play like Smash due to their criticisms of it being a "Smash clone" and were ultimately disappointed when it DIDN'T play enough like Smash. It was incredibly frustrating for someone who JUST wanted to playa Brawler with Playstation Characters and didn't CARE about any of that or that it was a B-Tier game. But that wasn't enough, because in the background of this you had the other debates about its roster, people whining and moaning about Crash and Spyro not being present. Well, they TRIED. The devs were sweating in the background to get these IP's and people kept shutting the doors on them, and Sony was not backing them either. They were out in the wild with a game literally carrying the name "Playstation" in its title but NO ONE was willing to help them outside of the handful of IP's they did acquire. Had the game not been roasted from the start and been allowed to accumulate a fanbase, it could have potentially secured some of those IP's. It might have GOTTEN a sequel that would have allowed them to followup on their original ideas but with more support from Sony. But none of that happened. The entire thing was a passion project that everyone collectively turned their back on then gawked at its failure. And the people who actually ENJOYED the game or JUST wanted a Playstation Brawler were cucked. Right idea, wrong time. I don't think PAS is coming back. It was too negatively controversial and people crapped on the poor thing too hard. Sony looks back at this thing with shame and supporting a sequel is just going to be seen as a huge financial risk. I've love for it to return, but I have no faith in that happening.
I think the biggest reason for that over hate is the gameplay loop left people a bit cold. I enjoyed the interactive stages, the rival system, when it was done well, was a neat idea, and the roster was actually fairly good for how small it was, each character felt unique and fun to play as, with the obvious exception of the two Coles. But the actual gameplay loop felt.. strange... why have stage hazards like pitfalls when the only way to remove a stock is to use a characters super move? Why not just make a standard fighting game instead of a platform brawler if that's the route you want to go? It felt like a game at odds with itself.
You couldn't have explained in better words everything I though about the game ever since I got my hands on it not too long after it was released! I think it was within the first year. And how disheartening it was to see all of that going down as it did and looking back. 💔
Its also even sadder when u see that they litterally had more DLC Characters in Development before canceling them. They wanted to include some Good Characters (especially Shadow The Hedgehog and ICO)
@FizzieWeb Yeah, the game was definitely middling. I still found it greatly enjoyable and played it for about a year straight just as a casual thing to have fun on, but after months on end of dead silence after Isaac and Zeus dropped and me checking to see if any future DLC was releasing, I found out it was dead in the water and only played it for a little longer after that. In terms of their efforts, I don't feel the team did anything wrong. The gameplay elements were a little wonky but not so much so that you couldn't have fun. If they made a sequel with more funding I don't doubt they could have improved upon it; it was effectively an experimental idea like N64's Smash. Uuuunfortunately that isn't even going to happen. Smash was made at a time before mass corporatization of games and people took a lot more risks, big game devs like Sony these days don't like risks at all and PSA was sorta've the end of the "experimental" phase they had. I don't consider it a coincidence that all big budget games basically started trying to be Uncharted after that.
All the hate comments really pissed me off but it was such a fun game. People would shit on it calling a smash clone but then bitch when they didn't see the game play like smash like wtf do you want?! So effing backwards i swear. Getting your own kill instead of piggy backing off someone else work to get the KO was so good.
“The right game made at the wrong time.” A perfect explanation of this game as a whole. Had Playstation All Stars came out now, especially after the Smash Ultimate hype has died down, the game probably would’ve been so much greater and more people would’ve been interested.
I think a good hook point for this kind of crossover would be to go firmly into a meta route. Have these characters in a game just BE characters in a game with no established "universes", because Playstation also happens to have their own IP where the crux of it is that it's taking place inside a playstation: Astro Bot. Whereas the first game had Polygon Man clawing his way from the brink and pulling characters from across different universes together, have some kind of virus disrupt the data in a Playstation console and scramble all the game data together. Astro is available as a navigator and potentially playable character to tie it all together, but the characters themselves could either be raw data acting on what they're programmed to and just not acknowledging that Aloy is now fighting Ratchet in a meaningful sense, or have them be fully self-aware and trying to get to the bottom of it while butting heads with eachother, like Joel being willing to do whatever it takes to see him and Ellie to the end while Kratos is doing much the same for Atreus. For a final boss, you could have either the virus itself as a new character, either as a domineering mastermind or a feral monster that's trashing the place, or have one of the bigger, potentially more obscure villains merged with the virus like Dr. Nefarious, Sweet Tooth, or even a completely out of nowhere pick like Vex, Gol & Maia or the return of Polygon Man.
That honestly sounds like the most unfun thing ever, if I can be honest. At that point, if the characters aren't even the real characters, what's the point?
@@DarkOverlord96 The point is that they are just as real in the game as they are in the real world; AKA not real. Thus, you don't have to worry about the clashing tones of their universes or how to explain the big crossover as much by treating them as actual universes. Interdimensional travel means certain games would NEED to be a major focus to justify the whole ordeal, lest the game start meandering too much. But having it all be a single messed-up Playstation is an equalizer. Anyone can have any relevance that's needed for the game's plot to work.
@@DarkOverlord96 If all the PlayStation references in the most recent games amount to nothing, what's the point? Like, I doubt any of the armor thrones on Iki Island, the multiverse records and Kvasir poems lead to anything. All of this just happens so don't see any reason why PlayStation All-Stars 2 would have a problem in that department.
I think that it's more that it's a fun way to contextualize it. Having it all play into the way that the PlayStation demos usually work and use that as a cohesive aesthetic would help to give a concrete starting point to then have all the crossover stuff be built off of. It gives you things like the tone, art style, design principles, and a good idea of what the story should center on, and how to work the characters into that. From that foundation, you can build characters designs to fit into the game, make their character moments around the light hearted nature of the setting, and have meta moments that directly reference certain parts of the games that characters come from. I'd definitely say that the idea of having the characters "be raw data acting on what they're programmed to and just not acknowledging that Aloy is now fighting Ratchet in a meaningful sense" wouldn't be fun, but if they went the other route and had the characters "have them be fully self-aware and trying to get to the bottom of it while butting heads with each other", I could see it working really well. I'd love to get to see these characters interacting in a lighthearted, meta setting, eventually taking on some kind of big bad, and then going home to their universes. Most importantly, it gives the game a base identity. The problem with the first PlayStation All-Stars game was that it worked backwards, getting characters, and then building a game around them having the characters. Not the characters themselves, not an aesthetic uniquely PlayStation, or even some crazy crossover idea, just the feeling of having the idea of the characters in a room together. By having a base way the game should look and feel, the game won't feel unnatural in the same way the first one way, with characters interacting in a void with no real reason behind that. Instead, the game will put all the characters in a concrete setting, and then work out from there to create fun things for the characters to do. The story can use the characters in setting that use them. It can build a theme and vibe to work for, and work with who the characters are to make it work for them. It would create an environment that feels concreate, real, and most importantly, uniquely PlayStation. Or I don't know. That's just my thoughts
All-Stars deserves a second chance! For what it was i loved the original game and in fairness currently i think i'd rather replay it than Smash Ultimate
I really like All Stars (I even bought the VITA and PS3 versions separately) and would enjoy a sequel. But I do feel it's unlikely to come out since it doesn't seem as likely to be a smashing success as I feel most Playstation gamers aren't as "interested" in different Sony IPs as much as Nintendo's players are. Or perhaps the better term would be "isolated from the different IPs". Looking at Smash Bros, Smash Bros is a success in part that Nintendo has a higher proportion of 1st party IPs that are beyond household names, but also because Smash Bros appeals to Nintendo users' tastes. Like, a person that plays Mario Sunshine or Mario Kart Double Dash or Zelda would be more likely to be into Smash Bros since Smash Bros carries the same kind of energy, feel and appeal as these other franchises even if the genre is completely different (it helps that people like Miyomoto have had a hand in different Nintendo franchises so that "feel" is present in different games). I mean, if you're someone that bought a GameCube instead of a PS2 or Xbox, you're someone that already likes what Nintendo's doing as much or more than what 3rd parties typically do. The appeal of the PS2 was the massive 3rd party lineup with the exclusives being more of a bonus after all (at least at first. It's hard to argue against a console that launched with GTA3). In contrast, a huge, if not majority, of Playstation users have more attachment to the 3rd party games on PS systems than Sony's own IPs. On the PS2 for example, the best selling games were stuff like GTA, Need for Speed, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Tekken, Madden FIFA etc. Only Gran Turismo is the Sony IP that was the juggernaut on the sales chart. The other best selling Sony IPs on the PS2, God of War and Ratchet, although very successful, are still behind these other franchises. It's a bit different for the PS3 with Uncharted, GOW, TLOU and Gran Turismo dominating the top spots with GTA, COD, Final Fantasy and Dark Souls scattered about. And we saw how despite that, it wasn't enough for All Stars 1 to do amazing. But with the PS4, while in terms of sales, it resembles the PS3 with more of Sony's own IPs in the top spots, we know from player counts that games like COD and most of Ubisoft's open world games actually have higher player counts. Sidenote: but this is why I feel the PS1 Classic had a bit of an uphill battle and it would only get harder for any future PS Classic consoles. Because of the large presence and impact of 3rd parties on Sony platforms, very few players have a consistent experience or lineup of games on something like the PS2. So picking the 20 or so games to represent the platform will be different from player to player compared to the SNES, NES and Genesis but I digress. Back on topic, I feel this means that for the average current PS4/PS5 user, they don't have as much attachment to other Sony IPs which makes it harder for a crossover fighting game to appeal to them. A fan of Horizon doesn't seem to have much interest in playing Killzone despite being made by the same studio. An Uncharted fan doesn't mean you're also a fan of Jak and Daxter despite being made by the same studio. So it would be harder to sell a God of War 2018 fan, fresh off playing their game with gory combat and focus on cinematic storytelling to play a cartoon-y fighting game just because Kratos is in it. Interestingly, there have been a few cases where such "cross polination" of fans have happened in Sony's past in a large and noticeable way. One such example was how many Ratchet fans were also fans of Jak. Who were also fans of Sly (likely because of the similar "feel" of all 3 games as mascot platformers despite their different developers. We also know all 3 were influenced by each other to some degree during development). Even Sony recognized this which is why there were crossover games starring all 3 such as with PS Move Heroes (and also why they often cameoed in each other's games). But that was then. And Jak and Sly didn't sell amazingly well afterwards. The only modern case of this is arguably with Uncharted and TLOU given Naughty Dog has developed them both and the 2 franchises do often trade and share mechanics and ideas between them. Maybe also GOW and Horizon which is debatable. But aside from that, there doesn't appear to be as much cross polination of fans between Sony's current IPs. Which means a crossover fighting game is a harder sell to these players. Interestingly, we saw the opposite happen to Metroid, F Zero and Star Fox. Smash Bros is unquestionably the most exposure and popularity Samus, Captain Falco and Fox have ever had. Yet the success of Smash Bros didn't translate to greater sales for Metroid, F Zero and Star Fox games. Likely because these games didn't appeal as much to people that played Smash Bros.
@@FraserSouris If Sony did a crackdown and got their studios working on more classic IP's I feel it could happen again. That same problem I think also extends to XBox too. Chiefly because aside from 3rd parties they got nothing. Halo's Dead, So is Gears of War, and they don't make an effort to do anything new for platformers with Rare, or revive any old series or make sequels. Sony has games their studios just don't make them, it's one of the reason's why I don't dust off my ps4 much anymore and why I personally skipped the PS5.The only 3rd parties I play anymore are indie games with the occasional Resident Evil or whatever catches my eye but that's it. Killer apps like Ratchet and GOW are coming to PC further justifying the lack of want for the console, and to be honest as much as I liked GOW4 I didn't have the need to play 5 immediately it's like whatever. Even playstation exclusive 3rd parties don't happen anymore because of companies like Konami going tits up. Ape Escape is gone, Nobody Cares about Metal Gear without Kojima at the helm (I hope) plus Metal Gear is multiplat with the exception of Solid 4, Castlevania has gone to gambling mobile games and games as a service with the occasional re-release which doesn't guarantee all the games there's still 11 games unavailable on modern Hardware. Without emulation some of these games have pretty high price tags too. Resident Evil's gone Multiplat so that's out even when they make a good game. Sony needs their first parties that aren't just TLOU, Uncharted, & Gran Tourismo, to have at least some form of lasting power. In the ps4 era Sony marketed the playstation as the "FUN" console while Microsoft tried to go all dull, boring, and "Edgy" (for lack of a better term) which is ironic considering the output of PS4 exclusives games was rather Dismal in presentation. Knack failed as a new IP despite becoming a meme, The Ratchet movie game was fun as usual nothing to write home about though, Bloodborne was awesome and my favorite souls game and the only one I really like (hope it gets a remaster or sequel) GOW4 was different but still good even in the context of the classic games which I all love. Also the Physical release of OKAMI Remastered on Ps4 was AMAZING and definetly sold that fun factor while calling back to where the game first launched (while having the updates and tweaks from the Wii version) Aside from those and the racing games they had mostly third party. The whole point of a console would be the rest of their exclusives and they don't really have them anymore. People would go nuts over a new Sly or Jak and Daxter game just by looking at how much people talk about it. It definetly won't be new Triple A resurgence especially in sales, but companies should be smart enough to know they don't need to make multi-billion dollars from a single product alone but we're past that point it seems so it's up in the air. I don't think the problem is sales it's just greed, typical triple A bullcrap, and general laziness (imo) Ian on the CU-podcast put it best at saying the only console you need now is a nintendo for fun quality games (as well as mobile gaming too ) and a PC for everything else. I love my retro consoles but playstation and xbox now don't got shit
@@daisukegori2112 No but no can say they aren't the gold standard. Just look at all the games that were like it that died recently. Brawlhalla is still around but the nick and WB one died.
10:00 ALLEGDLY Hideo Kojima requested Raiden over Snake to make it stand out from Smash but given the Dante and Crash situations I’m skeptical of that claim 10:25 a Superbot representive said regarding Crash “It Takes two to tango” so Activision likely either said no or asked for way too much
He may have requested Raiden, but I'd say it's more of a promotional angle due to All Stars having the at the time new reboot Dante and even Big Daddy from Bioshock... with a stage(s) based on the at the time new Bioshock Infinite.
actually yea! Activision was bargaining too much for Crash and while the devs wanted Classic Dante, Capcom insisted on using the "rebooted" version because I'm guessing they wanted this to be their Dante going forward (it didn't work out, DMC5 happened for real, rest is history)
I recall hearing that Kojima didn't want Snake and Raiden to fight each other, though maybe I'm wrong. In any case, it would at least be a little easier to get Snake now considering Kojima no longer in control of Metal Gear.
This is honestly tough. Because when you think of a fighting game, most people’s eyes go to Smash due to its casual and hardcore appeal. It has the introductory factor for newcomers, the level of depth for the hardcore gamers, the replayability nature for longevity, the IP recognition for novelty and most importantly a foundation of what the brand stands for. Now Sony too has a foundation for their modern day brand, but most of its timeless IPs are either dormant or with another studio outside their publisher. And to reintroduce them with potential fans getting pissed off may not go well. They could try a 3D fighter, you rarely see many of those. If they can do it right, might become another genre they can corner the market at.
Yeah kujo has a point here. When I think of fighting games, Street Fighter and MK come to mind. Smash is an afterthought. I've never heard anyone say otherwise.
@@greekieshion4501 My mistake on the wording, not to put down all the other fighting series out there. What I’m referring specifically is that Smash(depending on the times) as fighting game, resonates to more of a wider player base in comparison to Street Fighter or even Tekken. Since Smash 5 has concluded and the recent SF6 and T8 are starting to get more of its legitimacy back, its player base has started to recover and gain more popularity to its audiences. What I’m trying to argue here is if Sony tries to go for the Smash route again, there’s already going to be some hefty hurdles is gonna leap. Character recognition, Story Mode, 2 or 4 player focus, Arcade mode, Unlockables, etc. Now they have some templets they can choose from such as Smash, Street Fighter, Tekken, Mortal Combat, Marvel vs Capcom, just to name a few. But it’s uncertain if Sony has enough of a prestige legacy to make their fighting game on the same level as some of those other fighting game franchises. I’m not saying it can’t work, but how can modern day Sony make it work?
@@demetriusnp49 Ehhh...I mean considering Nick-All Stars and Multiversus both tried to appeal to the Smash market by making their game similar to theirs but failed because of the hurdles you mentioned, it feels more like something that unless met with proper support, won't live past the month it released. And tbh with you I wouldn't really consider Smash a true fighting game, but that's a sidetrack. That and, most of the hardcore appeal, and therefore the competitive side of Smash, is with Melee, a 20+ year old game that's aged like sour milk. Going through a different route can work, but unless Sony really puts in the work and gets the know how to make a fighting game (be it 3D, traditional, or Anime) either from themselves or a company with experience (capcom, bandai namco, arcsys), not to mention be willing to spend money to make sure the product gets updated for a long period of time? Yeah, it'll probably be too much work for Sony.
I always love the idea of crash and Spyro sharing a character slot, (crash riding Spyro as a reference to their crossovers and the fact that it would help flesh out their moveset easier.
Playstation Allstars was first conceptualized as a capture-the-flag style of game. And years later it just makes sense now. The PlayStation has the identity of the "over-the-shoulder action shooter" even if most games aren't like that. Pan the camera similarly to games like Ratchet, design maps based on the franchises where styles of characters can take advantage of it. Let's say Sly Cooper is a stealth-style character, so he could instantly jump onto a cornice to scout or get out of trouble. Other characters with the same skill would be Jin in Ghost mode and if we are lucky, Joker from Persona and Spiderman. Let's say other characters like Deacon can place traps around the team's bases, Kat can run on walls, Cole and Delsin can hover and Radec specializes from far distances. All of this with its proper balance, so if Kat's wall running is too much then it would serve as a passive with a cooldown. But this isn't just a hero shooter as many since first of all most of those are FPSs. While many characters have guns as it's one of PlayStation's most common genres, it's not enough to kill an enemy from afar. You need someone with mobility to secure the kill with some kind of execution (similar to how it happened in TLOU's multiplayer) So let's say Drake is really good from afar due to having machine guns and magnums. But getting closer may be difficult. That's where Sweet Tooth comes in with a berserk mode that allows him to run through the enemy fire to kill the enemy that Drake downed. Characters who don't have a lot of mobility would have options as well, let's say they go with Norse Kratos so instead of moving dashing with the boots of Hermes, he would have the option to menacingly move forward with his shield and once he gets closer let's say that Joel really won't stand a chance even if he would be one of the most capable close fighters from the ranged bunch. I don't want to write more but to me, a game like this one makes more sense than a platform fighter. I would prefer a traditional fighter but I also rather have Japanese developers or really hardcore fans doing those, so a capture the flag sounds fun for a Sony-made game.
Something that they could learn from smash is the idea of shadow fighters. Like with Colonel Radec that could have Sev, Narville, and other Helghast soldiers, and with Nathan Hale with Resistance they can add Capelli, Cartwright, Grayson and others. It also frees up the roaster as if they ever add Cole again they can just have Good and Bad Cole as skins.

I played it and I thought it was okay. The supers kill thing made matches go on a bit too long and some characters were just plainly bad to use like sir daniel
Time Battles were the way to. And once you got really good at the game, you could do one combo and have enough for a super just like that. It's just skill level
one of the major positives that this games has is its Crossover stages, seeing stages in the background slowly crash with other game ips was honestly a really cool concept which i have not seen smash done.
The visuals in both the Spider-Verse movies shows that you can have varying art styles and still be cohesive and I think that it could benefitted a PlayStation crossover.
No, it’s better to do something cohesive with the art style. Spider Verse’s characters don’t exactly blend well together, but that’s kind of the point. Even then, the major characters have basically the same visual style.
When you have something like Astro's Playroom making people point at the screen Leonardo DiCaprio style, you know this idea is too good to let it rot. Adding to this, I think there can be a tonal middle ground if you go the Astro Bot route, that being actually show what happens inside the console, think of Wreck It Ralph but without the arcade terminal. In Smash it's a kid's imagination. In Marvel Vs Capcom... to be honest I wish to have an answer without having to drag Infinite to it. Point is, focus on the weirdness of it all, it doesn't need to have a story mode (unless you are really careful with it) but you can have something like MvC 3's epilogue cutscenes as a reward for arcade mode. With PlayStation having more confidence on their IPs more than ever, so much so that they are on the marketing fore front from time to time, I think something like this can have the chance of being a moderate success.
Fat Princess was actually a pretty fun game. It was a fairly popular offering from the PlayStation Store, so it was cool so see one of their digital titles.
@Matt-md5yt so crash , you wish want to sleep for the rest of your life, wish granted *throws crash into a coffin and puts him in the ground* I am Calypso, and I thank you for playing playstation all-star
I think a platform fighter is fine, the combat and movement just needs to be way more polished. I can see 2D fighting because of all the human characters, but it would be awkward when it comes to the cartoony characters
as a young whippersnapper back when this game came out, I can definitely say that, even without owning the game, it made me aware of a lot of PlayStation characters/IPs that I wouldn't have been exposed to otherwise. that's how I learned of PaRappa's existence, for example.
You acknowledging PSASBR’s unique strengths at 10:41 where most other YTer’s fail to is why I always find your PSASBR videos a treat, TBP. Respect! Ultimately, your analysis is spot on. I considered myself a hardcore PS fan, who knew literally everyone on the PSASBR roster. PSASBR’s failure helped me realize just how few hardcore Sony die hards there were at the time (especially on PS3)…they just never really sold their company that way. I remember tons of gamers in high school assuming that Uncharted/GoW would eventually end up on Xbox like GTA/DMC/FF eventually did…Sony just wasn’t good at clarifying which were first party exclusives & which were third party. Ultimately though, I still think PSASBR’s sequel should continue its unique take on the arena fighter genre. If you think about it, it’s not really a “platform fighter” because falling off the platform isn’t the ultimate loss condition. PSASBR’s offense-focused, “dying-doesn’t-matter-as-much” system could lead to tons of unique gameplay ideas for the genre: score attack, team supers…heck I even think it’s SP mode could make a really neat rogue-like similar to Hades!
I managed to go back this year and grab the Platinum. Luckily I had finished the online trophies since the servers went offline years ago. I would do unspeakable things for a sequel to PlayStation all stars
I think the platform fighting would fit. As you said, these characters have vastly different tones, but people already associate platform fighters with crossovers. So, when people see this as a platform fighter, they will probably understand that this game won't take it self seriously despite the roster, making it more acceptable to see Jin Sakai fighting Sackboy without being immersion breaking
If MultiVersus can have Arya Stark, Agent Smith and Jason Voorhees fight Bugs Bunny, Steven Universe or Shaggy Rogers then ofc Kratos could duel Ratchet and Clank
The opening statement is why games like croc aren’t as remembered as games like banjo despite croc selling JUST AS much as Banjo. Nintendo fans played the Nintendo games while the Sony fans mainly played games that just happened to be on the PlayStation. People who grew up with the n64 all played the same games where as people who played psx played all kinds of different games and rarely played the same stuff
I wouldn’t say rarely. Back in the day games like Final Fantasy Seven, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro were talked about a lot by PlayStation owners. I think the reason was that Croc wasn’t that good. Even something like Vagrant Stories get talked more about Croc outside of some pissing contest against Banjo Kazooie.
The biggest obstacle to this game's success came from Sony themselves. They went to the trouble of making an entirely new studio -- Superbot Entertainment -- then failed to give them the budget they needed to make this game a success. Then when the game didn't reach Sony's expected sales numbers, they broke ties with Superbot. And Superbot made one more game (a mobile game, at that), before closing their doors. So the most glaring problem with making a sequel to PSASBR is that it would either need to be done by another studio (the most likely route), or Sony would need to rebuild a LOT of burned bridges (highly unlikely). To be fair, it's not as if Superbot didn't have other problems. Want to know why Crash Bandicoot wasn't in the game? Because Activision was charging 18 MILLION DOLLARS FOR HIM. I'm pretty sure that's several times the game's entire budget. Cloud Strife and Lara Croft were vetoed by Squeenix. Donte was used instead of Dante because Capcom wanted to promote DMC. Kojima recommended that Superbot use Raiden instead of Snake...the list goes on. That said, the game does have a cult following (myself included), who would love to see a sequel. I'm confident that Sony could do it...IF they learn from the mistakes of the past. The game needs a decent budget, for starters. They also need to make sure that they get a decent number of characters into the roster, and support the game post-launch with DLC. EDIT: Oh, and this should go without saying, but making PlayStation All-Stars 2 without Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Cloud Strife, Lara Croft, or Solid Snake would be a death sentence. The game can survive without one or two of them, but all five? Don't even try.
Skyrim and Elden Ring are too multiplatform for them to be considered Playstation IP. TBP added the Hunter because Bloodborne is the only Soul-borne game(ei FromSoft game) that lives only on Playstation. But I would love, for plotlines, to see both Elder Scrolls and Elden Ring representation. Sadly, they most likely wouldn't fit in this game
If by a snowball chance in hell they make another Playstation All Stars game. They, without an excuse, need to add an Oddworld Rep, Abe or Stranger spacifcally. It was a sin they didn't add Abe in the game.
This game deserves a second chance, it was almost perfect but tried a little too hard to be different in the wrong areas and given platform fighters are more prevelant nowadays it wouldn’t be too ridiculous to try this again
I’d say a warriors type game could be a good genre for this type of crossover. By definition, it’s already tongue-in-cheek, and it would be pretty easy to adapt various characters move sets to the Warriors battlefield.
I feel like Sony's over reliance on massive AAA Ips is unsustainable in the long term, no matter how iconic they may be. They have fairly massive gaps in kids games and smaller, more niche games.
@@DarkOverlord96 Sakurai said that a big inspiration for smash is the King of Fighters series. So if All stars 2 never happens, at least there's KOF 15.
I do see a traditional fighter possibly working, though their biggest IPs may be too dark for anything short of an MK clone with fatalities and such. A PlayStation Heroes 2 could also work.
Surprised Astro's Playroom wasn't brought up as a recent example of a game celebrating PlayStation history. It certainly felt like a better love letter than PSASBR did.
A sequel, or at least a reboot of this game would be a GREAT idea. The only thing I'd change would be how you get KOs by damaging players until you can send them flying, rather than just eliminate them with a special move.
I like how bioshock, sly cooper , jack and daxster, and a couple of others are left to rot just waiting for a new game that might never come and the more popular games like god of war, Rachet and Clank, and dead space are getting popular with all these reboots and new entries to the franchises
I’ve been praying for Sony to make an all stars sequel for 10 plus years. I been telling people this for years all stars was just released at the wrong time. People weren’t ready for a new platform fighter at the time so a lot of people didn’t even give it a try. People are much more open now multiversus, brawlhalla have proved that. Sonys ips are at a all time high right now. Plus smash dlc is done until the next entry so now would be the best time to do it. All star 2 is my most wanted game of all time I really hope Sony realize that this is one title that needs another shot.
I think Sony has a lot of unused forgotten IPs that they can pull from if they ever make a new crossover fighter. Not only do they have LoD and Okage, but they also have Tomba, Siren, Puppeteer, Syphon Filter, SOCOM, Wild Arms, Jumping Flash, the list goes on. Tbh at least half of the roster could be taken up by obscure characters considering the amount of IPs that Sony has not touched in years.
@AbstractInhuman My only issue with Tomba is I have no idea who owns the IP. Whoopee Camp shut down in 2000. People say Sony does, but they renewed Legend of Dragoon around the time PSAS was out, and Tomba is older than LoD. And I can't find anything regarding it. I wouldn't be surprised if even Sony doesn't know, since they seem more concerned with re-releasing Last of Us.
@@napalmblaziken Oh yeah I forgot that Sony might not actually own Tomba. Still tho, I think it'd be cool to at least have the character as a 3rd party rep because I always associated the games to be part of the PS1's legacy.
While I’ve always been more of a Nintendo than a PlayStation fan, I have often found myself wondering how things might go if Sony or even Microsoft tried their hand at a big self-crossover again. As you said: it doesn’t even need to be a fighting game. Can you imagine like, a turn-based Sony RPG? Kratos as a tank, Aloy as like a rogue/hunter, etc. Could be fun to mess around with, if nothing else.
This is a game I go back to with some friends, it had flaws but I liked how finishers work and the maps were pretty cool merging IPS together, I would love a another attempt.
I actually had an idea like this a while back, and I also had a fun idea that Astro, from Astro's Play Room, could be a sort of 'Kirby', in that there's not actually a MAIN character, but there is a default! He'd also be exempt from the rivalry system because of that! So the roster, accounting for rivalries [With some reasoning for oddball pairings!], would be: Astro Crash vs Spyro Jak vs Ratchet Sly vs Nathan Drake Parappa vs Spike Kratos vs Dante (Classic, DMC1, 3, or even 5) [Hack and Slash Combo Gods from PS2] Lara Croft vs Aloy [Oldschool vs Newschool badass female explorer fighting Dinosaurs] Needles Kane vs John Tanner (Driver) [Cars] Cole MacGrath vs Raiden Heihachi vs Kage-Maru (Virtua Fighter) [Fill the Fighting Game Niche] MegaMan Volnutt vs Jill Valentine (Resident Evil) [Fill the Capcom niche] Kazuma Kiryu vs Joker (Persona 5) [Fill the Sega niche] Rayman vs Abe (Oddworld) [Fill the weirdo niche] Klonoa vs Sora [Classic lighthearted, colorful cute platformers with a lightearted darkside niche] The Hunter of Dreams vs Jin Sakai Knack vs Sackboy (Little Big Planet) [Cause you gotta have Knack, babyeee] Alucard (Castlevania) vs Sir Daniel (Medievil) [2D vs 3D Gothic Explorers] Kat (Gravity Rush) vs Robbit (Jumping Flash) [I have too soft a spot for Robbit, and they both TECHNICALLY use gravity] That comes up to 35 combatants total! ...Maybe a bit much, but this is a dream roster! I think the rivalry system scratched the biggest crossover itch we usually don't get from these types of games, and I really think it'd be interesting if they leaned into it more! Just... Don't have 2 Cole MacGraths with one of them fighting Fat Princess!
Makes sense for another game, but the only major problems we face with this are: 1. Whose gonna make this game? 2. Will Sony ever want to come back to this idea?
In the time since this video Nick All Stars got a sequel that improved on just about everything from the first entry, so TBP was a bit pre-mature there. Between it, Brawlhalla, and Rivals of Aether, there is a space for platform fighters outside of SSB.
Another thing that really hurt it was it came out right before the PS4 came out in 2013. I think this game would have been so much more appealing as a unique PS4 launch title. It also would have been the kind of game to get people to buy extra controllers to play locally since that is when these games are best.
To solve the tonal whiplash, you can just redesign the characters to fit a unified tone. Multiverses did this with their Game of Thrones rep and she fits in with the rest of the game.
wonder if they’d be able to add Spider-Man, since his solo games are PS-exclusive. I guess if they made his design explicitly from the Insomniac games, maybe.
My main suggestion would be to not make it too much like Smash. I would also recommend Team Asobi for the developers, they proved with Astro's Playroom they can do games like that well.
Honestly, the biggest reason I didn't play the game was the gameplay. The whole idea that the only way to defeat your opponent was super moves made the super moves feel less special. It was no longer a cool option, it was a necessity. It also let to potential to be totally screwed over because another character was getting the crap beaten out of them. Seriously, if you were playing free for all, you could play perfectly but then get totally destroyed because the most aggressive player went after the least skilled one and overcharged their super meter.
If I remember correctly, PSASBR was originally going to be some sort of team arena game, I think the main mode would be 'Capture the Flag'. Personally speaking, I don't think capture the flag would work as a main gameplay mode, but the arena concept could work. A lot of Playstation games tend to be over-the-shoulder action games, weather they be shooters, beat-em-ups, platformers and so on. So with enough tinkering and tight-nit gameplay mechanics, I could definitely see PSASBR 2 be some sort of tag-team arena fighter. Something along the lines of classic Tenkaichi.
There were a couple of different capture the flag games in quake like freeze tag where you get frozen if your killed on the enemy side and need a guy to unfreeze you right next to you. Sometimes the flag was a ball to score on the other teams net too.
Kinda sucks that this game failed because I like the concept other game companies putting put their own characters into one big crossover like SSB but since this game failed we will probably never get to see other companies even attempt their own SSB and that's sad because SSB is awesome concept for a fighting game and I wish more games would copy its style of gameplay but also make it their own game as well.
If they do make an all stars 2 I hope they keep the stages and just add more different stages and keeping the stage and music transactions between fanchises, easily on of the best thing from all stars, hearing the music and other characters invading the stage was great to me. Dollface flying in Columbia, haven city crimson guards vs the twisted metal contestants, or the hydra in metropolis was so fun for me to see
I've had a thought on this for a while now. The thematic tonal dissonance is not nearly as great as the game play tonal dissonance, so I would almost argue you'd need two games that tie into each other, like many series did in the 6th and 7th gens between their console and handheld arms. One game can be a sort of Power Stone-esque arena fighter and the other can be a Quake/Halo-eqsue arena shooter. Another aspect comes from a number of PS IPs not having iconic *characters* but instead iconic *factions*. Nobody remembers Colonel Radec, they remember just the Helghast generally. I think that could fit the shooter one more, and the more individual characters could fit the fighter more. Maybe have the shooter have various factions crossing over, like the Helghast fighting the Chimera from Resistance, or Thugs-4-Less from R&C fighting Shinra from FFVII. Then, in the fighter, you can get your iconic IP characters like Ratchet and Sly and Cole and actually get Cloud or Squall or Lightning or Alucard or Solid Snake.
I feel like the big consequence of PS finding it's "identity" is that it's current lineup lacks variety as they tend to cater to the same niche of cinematic games, really the only series outside of that that Sony is still making are GT, R&C, LBP, and the Playroom. When I think about it, it arguably makes more sense for a PS crossover to lean heavily into third-parties than Smash because of how important those companies are to it's legacy compared to Nintendo's self-reliant nature. For gameplay, I know the obvious solution for a lot of people is to just make it a full on Smash clone or to make it a traditional fighter, but I honestly got into what was there before, so I would just take that and make it better (healthbars, maybe that scrapped "sumo mode," or a dash to make the characters faster). A new one could have an advantage because of that niche I mentioned earlier, in that they could craft a good single player campaign if they bring in some of PS Studios' best writers at the moment.
"Dear PlayStation gods, we mere mortals are desperately awaiting the glorious return of a PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale sequel! We've been deprived of epic character mashups and chaotic battles for far too long. Please bless us with another round of mayhem, because life without a sequel feels like button-mashing without purpose! #BringBackTheBrawl"
Honestly, I still think it being a platform fighting game could work. We have realistic characters in Smash alongside cartoony characters. I think an aspect that could make or break your fighter is presentation. You see, the only reason every Smash character easily coexists with each other despite looking different is because the design process for these characters include making them work together in one style. The most realistic characters have to be toned down and less detailed, while the more unrealistic characters need more textures and details in them, so they can all work together and be cohesive. PlayStation All Stars didn't really have that. Sure, there were times where they did implement this idea (Spike and Parappa come to mind), but not a lot of the more realistic characters were toned down or changed enough to fit with the cartoon characters, and vice versa. They all need to blend in and work well together, and that just didn't work there. It's why Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite didn't really work either, despite it having great gameplay.
I found myself loving the clashing artstyles tho, it makes it clear these are characters from different worlds and it make really look like these guys were literally taken from their world and into this one.
Whenever a crazy crossover like this happens there's always the subject of the Unifying Artstyle, and I had this idea for a while now. The art-style should reference the polygonal look of the Playstation 1. Just look at projects like Bloodborne PSX and other modern animators who have managed to master that artstyle One thing that bothers me about Multiversus is that while it tried to bring everyone under a banner of a cartoony artstyle, it lead to realistic characters being turned into cartoons but cartoon characters remained unchanged. It felt kinda uncanny in a way
@@KaminoKatie not... Exactly? While each character is inspired by a different animation style, they are all still represented in the Spider-verse artstyle Spiderham isn't 1:1 to an old-timey cartoon Neither is Peni 1:1 to an anime character They just look very similar to their inspirations while ultimately being drawn (or I guess, modeled?) in the Spider-verse St's artstyle And that's just a case of having a unifying artstyle
No, PS1 and N64 era games look like shit. They don’t age well like pixel art. There’s no reason to have that type of style outside of nostalgia baiting that most players aren’t going to care about
I would personally pitch a 3D action brawler inspired by JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven and Super Smash Bros. (The camera would always third person over the shoulder like in most Playstation titles, instead of locked on to the two characters though.) However, the arenas would be built like Super Smash Bros stages instead of being completely flat. The combat would also be changed to be more like Super Smash Bros. (For causal appeal), but for the most part the respective characters would play as they do in their own game series. For a story mode, I think the approach you described as far as pairing up tonally consistent franchises with each other (E.g., Ratchet and Clank with Crash Bandicoot, Horizon with Uncharted, etc.) to give them each a good story would be the way to go. As for the stages, I would recommend doing Hack-&-Slash/Run-&-Gun style levels with platforming elements, since the gameplay style I'm envisioning for the Versus mode would still work as is. (Basically think of going through God of War levels as Alloy or Uncharted levels as Joel and you get the picture for how story mode would play.)
I really like this idea and I can’t really help with the game design because I’m not that experienced with it but I can help with story. One idea I thought of is like a chapter thing starting with Astro bot. Basically Astro bot is investigating the things from the other worlds appearing and runs into sackboy who is just very confused on what’s going on. Every chapter could follow Astro bot finding other characters or someone else as they go through Astro bot’s world. Another story could be the basic choose a character and fight. Here’s the change as you play, you can unlock partners and they relate to the character like Joel getting Ellie, Kratos getting Freya, or something like Carmelita getting Chris redfield. There could also be cutscenes for getting these partners like Delsin being happy that he gets to work with Cole Macgrath(for story, Cole is good because that’s the canon version but his gimmick is he has a karma meter affects him). If there are rival then it should be an enemy of the character. An example of this would be Kratos fighting a young version of himself or Ellie fighting Abby.
Speaking of similar to Jojo's Eyes of Heaven there should be a dual cutscene or dual heat (like the ones happen in game) where two characters does an interaction with thier partner and does an incredible combo attack.
A variation system could be interesting as well. Like for Kratos he could have a Greek variant which has moves from the Greek era and a Norse era which focuses on his Norse game play. The blades of Choas would be in both.
The reason why Square did not give permission for Cloud is more importantly, Lighting and credibility (this because they were a new studio). SE where in the Middle of doing XIII while BR was in development and as the rest of third parties, they wanted the money AND publicity for the new games. The same for Lara croft because they where in the middle of the survivor reboot. Also Crash and spiro would be almost impossible now because of Microsoft owning both of them. Most likely if they were going to do a crossover game it most likely would end up being a 3rd person hero action shooter LIVE SERVICE with some characters just using meele attacks
With the exception of Spider-Man, because he's Marvel and not Sony, I wouldn't mind that roster in a new Playstation All-Stars. My main thing though is that that they should abandon the Smash Bros mechanic and go to a Power Stone 2 fighting style. Specifically Power Stone two, as that allowed more characters, but also stage transitions that could be interesting gameplay wise. We could even add in a similar way to unlock more weapons and items that have to do with Sony exclusive games like gravity bombs from Silent Bomber or materis from Final Fantasy VII. A story mode is very much needed as it takes advantage of the crossover element and gives what the fans want, unlike the halfassed story we got in Smash Ultimate, but something more like MVC Infinite but good. The Final boss however should still be Polygon man, but this time he summons and uses a ton of peripherals famous on the Sony consoles to help him defeat the players like gaming glove to control a large mech from Metal Gear, use a multitap to create clones of himself or the 6 axis controller to tilt and spin the stage.
I literally shouted "ABE!!!" when I saw him in your list. Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey is such a fantastic game and Abe is the perfect choice for a game like this especially with the release of Soulstorm and Abe's Odyssey Remaster. Recognizeable design, funny personality, and of course a potential for a great moveset.
All-Stars 2 should have the campaign have all the characters separated into different units/teams and you could send out on missions (maybe some of them could have exclusive missions/side quests to one another) like rescuing survivors, destroying enemy bases, and just generally having a wide-variety of missions. Also, idc for the gameplay, as long as it’s a fighter that isn’t like one of those bargain bin anime arena fighters that goes into the 3-in-1 deal basket at game-stop, I’m happy.
I think that if PlayStation All-stars Round 2 were to be an arena fighter similer to War of the Monsters, that could work. Most of the characters here already have some kind of arena combat segments in they're games.
i think the reason they went with Raiden is because Smash already had Snake in their games so they went with the second option Characters that can be added: OG Dante(DMC) Vergil(DMC) Leon Kennedy(RE) Crash Spyro Demi-Fiend(SMT) Jin Kazama(Tekken) Nightmare(SC) Sho Minamimoto(TWEWY) Zagreus(Hades) CJ(GTA) Tidus(FF) Yu Narukami(Persona) Any specific builds from a FromSoft game Doomslayer(Doom) Ezio(AC) 9S(Nier:Automata) Minion(TM)
We absolutely do need this game to come back with a sequel it should probably come back next year or 2025! Because next year or on 2025 is gonna be PlayStation‘s 30th anniversary! I should 100% highly agreed for PlayStation! To Finally make a sequel to the game for their 30th anniversary coming up next year or on 2025!
The PlayStation world has been split into two factions, the destroyers and the Conjoiners. Destroyers (Kratos, Sephiroth, lady dimitrescu) are trying to destroy the realms to protect their own. The Conjoiners (Parrapa, Ratchet, Joel) Try to build connections in the hope that peace between them lead to the best outcome. Asymmetrical game like Dead by Daylight with 1 destroyer vs 5 Conjoiners.
I would honestly love a sequel to this game. I had so much fun with the original and I think the time is nigh for a second try. Also the fact that the game is 11 years old and people are still asking for a sequel really goes to show how much we need one. If they can put Kratos in Fortnite, I think they can do another all stars. By the way, I think they could solve the tone problem by having a visual style that complements both sides, like cel shading or something to make each character feel more believable in the game's world and make people stop complaining about the 'the game doesn't work because the characters are from different franchises' nonsense.
Sony should do 2v2 or 3v3 3d team-based fighter rather than what they did last time, and throw in some dimension lord as a final boss. However unlike last time they should have a story/adventure mode like Brawl or something like that.
The best things about this game were the rivalries and stages. Everything felt so commected. I dont agree with you at the end, everything should be connected just like the first one. Seeing characters like Fat Princess preparing to fight Evil Cole was honestly hilarious
All Stars would work well as a Chrono Cross plus FF Tactics style game where you recruit a bunch of characters and use theyre diffferent abilities in a tactic RPG. idk it sounds cool in my head lol
This game deserves a sequel! 🙌 I wanna see crash bandicoot, spyro, Lara Croft, Gex the gecko, rivet and kit, miles morales and lammy in the roster, plus an adventure mode like smash bros brawl where teams of three or four characters team up to take down an even greater threat.
One thing I love about games like this IS the tonal whiplash. Seeing Sackboy get into an argument with Big Daddy was great.
Sir Daniel Fortesque Vs a British sci-fi Nazi
Exactly! Always been one of the things I loved the most about these games too!

If this game ever comes back they HAVE to keep the rival battles
If Sony ever does bring back Playstation All Stars, I hope they keep the map crossovers. Quite literally some of the most hype shit I've seen in a crossover fighting game. Especially that soundtrack bro 😭
Some people hated the maps because of the hazards but you can turn hazards off. People complaining about this game are stupid. It's a good game.
@jonyleche3549 Well just turn off map hazards and your wish is granted🤷♂️
Dosen't it still cross over the map anyway. Last time I checked turning off hazards only makes it so u dont get hit by background events
@FizzieWeb
Yeah, the game was definitely middling.
“The right game made at the wrong time.”
A perfect explanation of this game as a whole. Had Playstation All Stars came out now, especially after the Smash Ultimate hype has died down, the game probably would’ve been so much greater and more people would’ve been interested.
Playstation All Stars also had some of the most unknown characters in the game no one knows who Papa rapper Spike the catand fat princess
@@DarkOverlord96It works for Smash!
If they changed the dumb supers only kill then I think it could be better
Nintentards and game jornos gave bad press claiming that Nintendo invented that formula. They did not.
@@daisukegori2112 No but no can say they aren't the gold standard. Just look at all the games that were like it that died recently. Brawlhalla is still around but the nick and WB one died.
10:00 ALLEGDLY Hideo Kojima requested Raiden over Snake to make it stand out from Smash but given the Dante and Crash situations I’m skeptical of that claim
10:25 a Superbot representive said regarding Crash “It Takes two to tango” so Activision likely either said no or asked for way too much
He may have requested Raiden, but I'd say it's more of a promotional angle due to All Stars having the at the time new reboot Dante and even Big Daddy from Bioshock... with a stage(s) based on the at the time new Bioshock Infinite.
actually yea! Activision was bargaining too much for Crash and while the devs wanted Classic Dante, Capcom insisted on using the "rebooted" version because I'm guessing they wanted this to be their Dante going forward (it didn't work out, DMC5 happened for real, rest is history)
@@onihaiena6152 The reason Dante was rebooted is because DMC 4 didn't sell well enough and Capcom wanted to compete with God of War.
I recall hearing that Kojima didn't want Snake and Raiden to fight each other, though maybe I'm wrong. In any case, it would at least be a little easier to get Snake now considering Kojima no longer in control of Metal Gear.
considering how MGS4 is a PS3 exclusive, it's kind of dumb how Snake or even Old Snake is completely absent from the roster
Who are the people that go “oh smash” when you say fighting game? Not Mortal Kombat or street fighter? “Most people’s eyes”?
Either Smash or MultiVersus.
I would prefer a traditional fighter but I also rather have Japanese developers or really hardcore fans doing those, so a capture the flag sounds fun for a Sony-made game.
ehhhh idk I would prefer it to be a platform fighter over a traditional ANY day of the year
Something that they could learn from smash is the idea of shadow fighters.

This game was so fun, people I've talked to who shit on it 90% also say they never played it
I played it and I thought it was okay.
Spiderverse shouldn't be a fuckin' standard.
I mean didn't Smash already prove that with characters like Toon Link
@@lightdarksoul2097 Kinda, Toon Link in Smash doesn't have his cell shading.
Some people complained about that. I loved the different art styles. It showed creativity with how they blend them together.
If they make a sequel. I bet Calypso would be in charge of the tournament. Maybe he's working alongside sephiroth
I'd pay for that.
I could see that unironiclly. Calypso does have some tricks on his sleeve
@Matt-md5yt so crash , you wish want to sleep for the rest of your life, wish granted

I'd pay for that but I'd also like to see GOWR Odin in charge
“That Raccoon Thing” had me cracking up. Thankfully, we all know you mean Rift Raccoon.
I feel like a 2d fighter like Marvel vs Capcom would be cool
I think a platform fighter is fine, the combat and movement just needs to be way more polished. I can see 2D fighting because of all the human characters, but it would be awkward when it comes to the cartoony characters
as a young whippersnapper back when this game came out, I can definitely say that, even without owning the game, it made me aware of a lot of PlayStation characters/IPs that I wouldn't have been exposed to otherwise. that's how I learned of PaRappa's existence, for example.
One correction, Sony owns Bloodborne.
As a hardcore That Raccoon Thing fan, I appreciate you naming him only as "That Raccoon Thing" in this video
That Raccoon Thing and That Raccoon Thing’s Girlfriend are some of my favorite characters

With that company dead and buried would it be the same though?
I think the platform fighting would fit. As you said, these characters have vastly different tones, but people already associate platform fighters with crossovers. So, when people see this as a platform fighter, they will probably understand that this game won't take it self seriously despite the roster, making it more acceptable to see Jin Sakai fighting Sackboy without being immersion breaking
If MultiVersus can have Arya Stark, Agent Smith and Jason Voorhees fight Bugs Bunny, Steven Universe or Shaggy Rogers then ofc Kratos could duel Ratchet and Clank
in no other game can you punch parappa the rappa in his goofy face with Sweet Tooth, the rivalry with him and Kratos was perfection
I think Lara was considered, but they wanted to wait till DLC, and DLC was discontinued after wave 2.
Yeah Big Boss like the MGS3 version would be a great substitute for Solid Snake but rest are irreplaceable.
Let's not forget Jin, Aloy, Joel and Ellie, Deacon St. John, and the Hunter from Bloodborne.
with all the new video game characters, it sure as hell be awesome. From Kratos, Aloy, Tarnished, Dovakhin, Ellie, Jin Sakai, and the list goes on.

Never forget: this is god of war canon
The modern PlayStation brand definitely doesn’t work for a PSASBR2 sadly. The lighthearted and campy exclusive IPs simply aren’t prioritized anymore
Exactly, PSASBR just felt like it was made at the right time just without the proper execution.
If a platform fighter doesn't, how about a 3d arena fighter like Power Stone
I just wanna say thank you for acknowledging LoD exists. I see so many people ignore it when making a PSAS roster, and it makes me sad.
I'd love to see a sequel. Imagine Kratos looking around, seeing Sweet Tooth and they both sigh and go "not again!" Before they run at each other
While I’ve always been more of a Nintendo than a PlayStation fan, I have often found myself wondering how things might go if Sony or even Microsoft tried their hand at a big self-crossover again.
So the roster, accounting for rivalries [With some reasoning for oddball pairings!], would be:
Astro
Crash vs Spyro
Jak vs Ratchet
Sly vs Nathan Drake
Parappa vs Spike
Kratos vs Dante (Classic, DMC1, 3, or even 5) [Hack and Slash Combo Gods from PS2]
Lara Croft vs Aloy [Oldschool vs Newschool badass female explorer fighting Dinosaurs]
Needles Kane vs John Tanner (Driver) [Cars]
Cole MacGrath vs Raiden
Heihachi vs Kage-Maru (Virtua Fighter) [Fill the Fighting Game Niche]
MegaMan Volnutt vs Jill Valentine (Resident Evil) [Fill the Capcom niche]
Kazuma Kiryu vs Joker (Persona 5) [Fill the Sega niche]
Rayman vs Abe (Oddworld) [Fill the weirdo niche]
Klonoa vs Sora [Classic lighthearted, colorful cute platformers with a lightearted darkside niche]
The Hunter of Dreams vs Jin Sakai
Knack vs Sackboy (Little Big Planet) [Cause you gotta have Knack, babyeee]
Alucard (Castlevania) vs Sir Daniel (Medievil) [2D vs 3D Gothic Explorers]
Kat (Gravity Rush) vs Robbit (Jumping Flash) [I have too soft a spot for Robbit, and they both TECHNICALLY use gravity]
That comes up to 35 combatants total! ...Maybe a bit much, but this is a dream roster! I think the rivalry system scratched the biggest crossover itch we usually don't get from these types of games, and I really think it'd be interesting if they leaned into it more! Just... Don't have 2 Cole MacGraths with one of them fighting Fat Princess!
Not bad
Makes sense for another game, but the only major problems we face with this are:
1. Whose gonna make this game?
2. Will Sony ever want to come back to this idea?
Correction:
Project X Zone is more of a Namco-made thing, they just get the license to use other companies' characters.
I think they should make a unique art style.
Similarly how mvc3 had this comic book art style with all their characters and made them fit in.
In the time since this video Nick All Stars got a sequel that improved on just about everything from the first entry, so TBP was a bit pre-mature there. Between it, Brawlhalla, and Rivals of Aether, there is a space for platform fighters outside of SSB.
"That Raccoon Thing" 😂
Another thing that really hurt it was it came out right before the PS4 came out in 2013. I think this game would have been so much more appealing as a unique PS4 launch title. It also would have been the kind of game to get people to buy extra controllers to play locally since that is when these games are best.
I just enjoyed Sweet Tooth getting mad at Kratos for knocking an ice cream cone out of his hand.
I'm still VERY upset that the game got its development stopped right as they were finally bothering to remember Legend of Dragoon existed.
To solve the tonal whiplash, you can just redesign the characters to fit a unified tone. Multiverses did this with their Game of Thrones rep and she fits in with the rest of the game.
Now also Jason Voorhees.
wonder if they’d be able to add Spider-Man, since his solo games are PS-exclusive. I guess if they made his design explicitly from the Insomniac games, maybe.
They would have to pay marvel since they actually don't own the game rights they just get first bidding for them when they want to be used
This should age well. Nick All-Star Brawl 2 just got announced. 😂
17:48 Well that aged interstingly...
Would absolutely love a sequel! They can add and do so much with another game! 🙌
SuperBot did try to get Crash and Spyro but they were too expensive
It CAN work. Just needs another go.
*Reads the video title* HELLLL YEAH IT DOES! I'd be all for it!
"That racoon thing" I have never felt so personally offended for no reason in my life.
If they do make an all stars 2 I hope they keep the stages and just add more different stages and keeping the stage and music transactions between fanchises, easily on of the best thing from all stars, hearing the music and other characters invading the stage was great to me. Dollface flying in Columbia, haven city crimson guards vs the twisted metal contestants, or the hydra in metropolis was so fun for me to see
This game was a large part of my childhood
This game finally gets the love that it deserved
To be fair, Playroom includes plenty of nods to other older IP in it, while GoW didn’t start off as an overly cinematic game but became one over time.
All-stars remake being a 3-d fighter could be interesting
Just look at projects like Bloodborne PSX and other modern animators who have managed to master that artstyle
One thing that bothers me about Multiversus is that while it tried to bring everyone under a banner of a cartoony artstyle, it lead to realistic characters being turned into cartoons but cartoon characters remained unchanged. It felt kinda uncanny in a way
@@KaminoKatie what the hell does Spider-verse have to do with what I said above
@@KaminoKatie not... Exactly?
While each character is inspired by a different animation style, they are all still represented in the Spider-verse artstyle
Spiderham isn't 1:1 to an old-timey cartoon
Neither is Peni 1:1 to an anime character
They just look very similar to their inspirations while ultimately being drawn (or I guess, modeled?) in the Spider-verse St's artstyle
And that's just a case of having a unifying artstyle
it would look cheap
@@KaminoKatie How exactly are you planning to do that? Sly and Kat barely got their cell shaded look.
No, PS1 and N64 era games look like shit. They don’t age well like pixel art. There’s no reason to have that type of style outside of nostalgia baiting that most players aren’t going to care about
Psabr was so sick and the combos and mechanics could be suprisingly technical. One of my favorite games of all time
I would personally pitch a 3D action brawler inspired by JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven and Super Smash Bros.
An example of this would be Kratos fighting a young version of himself or Ellie fighting Abby.
so like Anarchy Reigns or Bleeding Edge in a sense?
@@onihaiena6152 Yeah, sort of like that.
Speaking of similar to Jojo's Eyes of Heaven there should be a dual cutscene or dual heat (like the ones happen in game) where two characters does an interaction with thier partner and does an incredible combo attack.
Changing the genre entirely defeats the purpose of having a Sony version of Smash, which was the only reason people were interested in this game
I think it would be best for this game to be a Assist fighter like MVC imo
A variation system could be interesting as well. Like for Kratos he could have a Greek variant which has moves from the Greek era and a Norse era which focuses on his Norse game play. The blades of Choas would be in both.
If they made a PlayStation all star 2 I wanted to play like power stone. It will be a pretty good crossover fighting game if it plays like that.
No way you actually put Dart Feld on that roster! I would buy that in a second!
That game went so hard.
It still hurts me so bad that both dreams and gravity rush had low sales while horizon zero dawn is the forth most success IP of playstation
After watching your Sly Cooper videos I can see why you called him a Racoon Thing.
i think the reason they went with Raiden is because Smash already had Snake in their games so they went with the second option
Characters that can be added:
OG Dante(DMC)
Vergil(DMC)
Leon Kennedy(RE)
Crash
Spyro
Demi-Fiend(SMT)
Jin Kazama(Tekken)
Nightmare(SC)
Sho Minamimoto(TWEWY)
Zagreus(Hades)
CJ(GTA)
Tidus(FF)
Yu Narukami(Persona)
Any specific builds from a FromSoft game
Doomslayer(Doom)
Ezio(AC)
9S(Nier:Automata)
Minion(TM)
He was requested by Kojima.
I think Chris makes more sense over Leon as RE2 and 4 were on Nintendo systems too but the first RE was a big deal for playstation
@@lightdarksoul2097 It also gives Capcom an excuse to keep implementing Chris "boulder puncher" Redfield into their fighting games.
@@dragondelsur5156 Hey the man is super buff when we get to see his arms.
Lu Bu(Dynasty Warriors ) like also need to be in the game too
We absolutely do need this game to come back with a sequel it should probably come back next year or 2025!
I am still hoping for a sequel for this game. It had great Ideas but at the wrong time.
Activision have crash and Spyro
Microsoft but Activision
Lu Bu ( Dynasty Warriors ) would be dope
Yay! Tactical covering a PlayStation All-Stars video.
