Good stuff!, I went through the similar kind of assessment you did about half way through last year and determined that grinding, arc welding, and nasty HV experiments are a serious fire risk due to clutter and drums of fuel oil and hydraulic oil in here!. hence why I keep banging on about needing to sell some stuff and make room in here :P Thus, I keep it to an absolute minimum for now and hang around for a few hours after "Hot work", because, well, that is a great time to sit down and enjoy a few alcoholic beverages, and reply to comments :D. if something is on fire, I will know about it before shutting everything down cold for the night. Keep up the great work Andy!, a lot of people do this kind of thing at home, and to be honest, I hear of more terrible fires and deaths from working on cars and small engines at home due to fuel related fires and explosions!. same with oxy-acetylene kits in vehicles. 2 people died in Melbourne last year when their vans detonated, killing them and leveling the structures nearby!. -Ed

Get an e-cig. Or try it. I've been using one for about 3 months. In that three months I've smoked maybe 50 cigarettes. Big difference from 20 a day. The e-cig doesn't completely eliminate the craving but it helps tremendously. Besides, e-cigs should be right up your alley. I bet you could make an e-cig better than any one you could buy.

IDK. A lot of smoke detectors use air density or something similar. The one in my apartment building can get set off by heavy rain.
