Fukuoka, Japan, October 1, 2019 - Yuki Ishikawa sparked Japan with a match-high 19 points in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-21) victory over Italy at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup on Tuesday.
Japan coach Yuichi Nakagaichi: "We won the first match 3-0 with an excellent performance. This is pleasing to us. There are strong teams in this competition. We must execute. In the first set we disrupted their serve and were good on block-touch. Our side-out went well. We focused on quick pipe attacks. We lost points in the second set after long rallies. In the third set our service was not good."
Japan captain Masahiro Yanagida: "Our opponents were strong. We did our best in a great atmosphere. We want to keep the atmosphere in the coming matches."
Japan player Yuki Ishikawa: "It is good to start the World Cup with a 3-0 win over Italy. We won the third set despite losing momentum. It is a good sign for the coming matches to win like this."
Japan player Yuji Nishida: "It is nice to win 3-0 in a good way. I had some tough moments in the third set, but my teammates backed me up. I will have a chance to grow from this match."
Italy coach Gianlorenzo Blengini: "I’m not happy with the result. At the beginning it was difficult and we could not play good volleyball. This team is not together always. Some of the players joined only a few days ago. We want to get better and grow in this competition. We had chances in the first set but Japan defended better. My adjustments were not enough."
Italy captain Matteo Piano: "It is great to play against a good team. We did not have a good start. We could not stay close in the first and second sets. Our coach told us we have to increase our level in each and every set."

It always brings me to tears whenever the play reminds me that Ishikawa and Sekita have been playing together as teammates since they were in high school, then the college, even to this day in the national team fighting along as representatives...

I don't think I'll ever get over Japan's gameplay, they play some of the best overall plays in the tournament from my perspective.

5:57 Ishikawa serves, Italy receives it, sets, spikes it, Yamamoto digs the incoming spike, Italy chance ball, receive, set, feint, Yamamoto pancakes feint, Sekita underarm sets, Yamauchi rebound resets the ball from a block, Sekita underarm sets the ball again, Ishikawa comes in from the back for a spike but changes to a set mid air, and Nishida cleanly gets a kill. Sekita celebrates because I mean, the Italy blockers jumped to stop the incoming spike when he turned it into a set and couldn’t jump again in time to catch Nishida’s spike. Throwing off the defense for a split second can cost any team their points.
That sequence was really glorious, and Italy did a great job reacting quickly to the ball honestly. You can see them getting into place real quickly.
I still couldn't get that play out of my head 6:10.

E' sempre una gioia per gli occhi vedere il Giappone giocare... Difendono di tutto e noi non siamo stati alla loro altezza. Che non ci fosse la squadra titolare ( a parte Anzani) non è una giustificazione perchè nessuno di loro è un novellino. Anzani, Candellaro e Nelli sono in nazionale già da un po', così come Balaso e Sbertoli non è un novellino. Non siamo stati abbastanza bravi. IShikawa è un mostro di bravura. Era fortunata Siena ad averlo e ora è fortunata Padova!
