All three Brahms sonatas burst at the seams with so many brilliantly original ideas, you'd think they were sets of pieces and not sonatas. This is not to say they are incoherent - quite the opposite! All three, especially the second, have a masterful unity about them that belies Brahms' youth. However, this unity often goes underappreciated in most performances. Richter senses this opportunity for unity in the face of thematic complexity (has he ever failed in this regard?) and brings listeners the presence of one indomitable, fiercely-burning whole. What a shame he never recorded the 5 movement iceberg that is the third sonata...
Right. The effect is unified, though they seem segmented. Excellent, insightful observations - refreshingly so given that this forum is so overpopulated with nonsensical commentary. Fantastic performance. J Katchen gets my #1 ballot, but then this is the first time I've heard the S Richter interpretation of this work (letting it sink in;-)

I have heard Richter live with this Sonata in the year 1985, it was breathtaking indeed!
Surely you mean 1986 since Richter never played it in 1985.But still:you are lucky to have witnessed that event!
