    let me clarify , weld 4 bolts to deck where u want your crane, put a nut on each , put the crane on, adjust to where you want it level, , spot weld in place, then cut out steel plates and proper angel weld to crane base and deck of boat, simple no math involved, place 4 nuts on top tighten down. Keep up the good work your almost there.

    Cut the base off that crane and make an under/through-the-deck socket into which you can drop it or remove it, with no fuss. You can put more sockets wherever you want, for use and or stowage. It could come in handy for prop-work one day.

      Probably 5 ways to deal with that. For 1 I thought a metal cap with a rubber knob kind of thing on the bottom for a tight fit. I would want it to be as flush as possible to the cap would be the same size as a flange welded on the crane post.

    • @mgclark46
      @mgclark46 5 лет назад

      Another benefit would be that you could build an in itemediate socket post if you ever need to use the crane in a higher position. Just put the intermedeiade post in the socket and plug in the crane.

    • @mgclark46
      @mgclark46 5 лет назад +3

      You could make benches, chairs, or gear lockers that could pop right in the sockets as well.

    Today at the saw mill picking up some logs for a handrail job, I spy an old motor laying in the weeds. It was a Detroit diesel just like the one on your boat. The blower on the side and the rusty piston in the front. It was funny as before your video I would have known nothing about that motor. I almost wanted to pick it up and take it home to put in my boat. But I also learned from you that these engines are thirsty, expensive to fix and most importantly heavy. So I left it there. Stu: your Route 66 plans brought back good memories. I rebuilt a 1962 Triumph TR4 and drove from Philly to LA 10 years ago. Long sections of Route 66 are not navigable, so you have to go on a newer highway nearby (Rte 40) for parts of your journey. When you pull off 40 to a town to eat or stay, you'll be back on the original '66, with art deco hotels and old gas stations. The topographical and vegetation changes are amazing as you approach and cross the Continental Divide. You will have a great time.

    Put 4-bolts through the deck and then add two nuts on each below and above another plate that the crane is mounted onto. Then you can adjust based on actual boat deck angle or varying loads. I hope that helps Stu. (BTW - you also have Canadian friends and we use metric - eh! )

    Hi Stu. Just a thought about the deck pad to level up the crane/hoist. I think that the pad should support the whole area of the base plate or bigger with the thin end of the wedge at least 1/2 inch thick to support the lift. that will avoid dig in when you swing inboard with weight, you know what they say about the thin end of the wedge. Just worth a think about mate.

    Suggestion: Level the boat ? Once the boat is level you can use your magnetic level to ensure the crane is vertical. Leveling the boat will also help with fitout. So glad you are keeping the Drover !

    probably the best scrub bashing 4wd I had was an old ex Oz air force firefighting 63 long wheel base LR that I found parked under a half fallen down shed on a bush property I bought in the NT Oz . . it never once lost out in grubbing out tree's up to 6 inch's at base that I wrapped a chain around & floored the accelerator , We spent a few years next to the Hawkesbury at Avalon in the early 70's , nice area .

    Gearbox looks to be a PRM 601 and the bit that is snapped off is just an breather vent they do break very easily. Water in the oil could be from the oil cooler pressure test it before re fitting it all back in the boat. Great videos / project.

  • @the_omg3242

    An easy way to get your deck angle would be to put your angle gauge on one side of the boat and zero it then check the other side. Half of the relative angle should be the angle from level. (assuming they built the boat symmetrical)
    Those gauges are really handy. I use them at work all the time. Stick it to a long piece of angle iron to ignore any little bumps and dents in the surface you're checking. (they usually have magnets to stick them to stuff)

    Hi Stu, great idea for the crane, do as the military does for transporting the ammo around. Put a track on your bridge then too your crane. that should make it sturdy and capable for hauling the eng up and down.. Make it so its a quick disconnect. Round eye, with a pin and lock then out to the crane with the same connection on top of the main leg.

  • @DoRC
    @DoRC 5 лет назад +3

    Hate to say it but if there's rust on the outside of that bearing race then there is probably rust on the inside of the race which means it's toast. You've come this far I say pull the gearbox apart and go through it.

    • @robp7652
      @robp7652 5 лет назад

      Just change the oil after about 20 hrs of run time you will be golden. No wobble on that bearing.

      @DoRC 5 лет назад

      @@robp7652 the bearing being loose and the race being pitted are two different things. Once a race gets damaged it's just a matter of time until it fails.
