Thank you so much for watching! I went to Texas A&M and loved going to see the band. They have an incredible maneuver where they split into four groups, each goes to a corner of the field and then cross over in a big "X" in the middle of the field. I know someone will talk about Ohio State (and they do have a great band), but as for precision military marching, nothing beats The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band!
We're an Aggie family. At this game my son was an officer of the day.. he's the cadet standing with the 30 yard line marker (top right). To experience watching the band in person, is an incredible experience.
Nothing on Texas A&M but there are definitely lot’s of college bands that are just leaps and bound better and more entertaining in terms of music and drill. Take a look at Ohio State, Michigan, UMass, or UConn. In fact funnily enough UMass and UConn have pretty terrible football teams so halftime is the only part of the game that isn’t depressing.
This Teasipper agrees with you. I now have two sons who are Class of ‘10 and Class of ‘19, and we love Aggieland and the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band! #housedivided

Right, A&M stands for Agricultural and Mechanical. It's also a military school, so their band has always been famous for precision marching. Some of the band members can be seen wearing cavalry boots with their cadet uniforms.
@@usafvet100 yeah, those boots indicate they are seniors. Senior cadets (a little more than 500 total) in both normal outfits and band outfits wear boots.
As an "old-timer" in marching units, I have to say that the Aggies are an exceptionally fine marching unit. Today, no one else seems to do this style of marching. In the 1950's and earlier this was the normal style of movement for marching bands, drum and bugle corps, drill teams and etc. If you watch the old Clint Eastwood movie from the late 60's "Kelly's Heroes" there is a brief shot of a similar military band in the background part way through the movie. The style of marching goes back to ancient Rome, and is based on their style of shaping and moving on the battlefield, formation of squares, shifting of formations and moving back and forth from defensive to offensive formations. Watch the Aggies shift formation and see how much they change their shape, open files and close them and expose different fronts in 4 counts, 8 counts, 16 counts. Amazing. Everyone who confronted the Roman armies had to learn how to do that or be defeated by it. The use of these kinds of formations continued up until Waterloo. In the American revolution the early signs appeared that formation of squares and such was on the way out, but it took Waterloo to prove it, and the Franco Prussian war to put it to rest. Even in the beginning of WWI the strategy of motion dominated thinking. Never the less, training in motion has been an effective tool of discipline, and the logic of shaping the battlefield continues until today, though today the battlefield is recognized to include more dimensions and multiple symmetries. But, the logic of shaping the battlefield begins right where the Aggies have chosen to dominate in their style of marching. I've never seen anyone do it better.
I've never seen the Aggie band except on tv. Would love to see it in person-a great band from a great university. A great contribution to the military ranks. An old vet
I was a High School band kid. Learning drill was fun but also a bit difficult. This is S-Tier stuff. REALLY enjoyed it. Shout out to the Tucson High Marching 100!!!!!!!!!
The sentiment is the same here. Your fan base was great. Gracious, courteous and respectful and loved your team as much as we love ours. You also so left the Big 12 for the same reasons we did...lol that other school. God bless and thanks for the kind mention. Class of 88
The Texas A&M Football team came to visit my university in 1988, and the marching band came with them. They marched like this at our stadium and at the end of their performance got a standing ovation. The Aggie Marching Band is absolutely amazing.
"I didn't know this even existed, in my life. How have I not seen this before!" Now she's going to spend the next 12 hours looking up college marching bands. Just so you know, they give out scholarships to the marching bands as well. I don't know how much money worth of free education they give out, but it's not insignificant.
I live in Texas. We take our Football and halftime very seriously. You should react to Ohio state, U.T Longhorns, and other colleges. You’ll really enjoy them. Your doing a great job kiddo, keep up the great work.
@@fredloftonab You are a stupid idiot. None of those do close order drills; they just follow each other around like elephants and eventually form some script or cartoon character. You are entitled to your opinion no matter how stupid it is. The Goin' Band is decent at music, but can't march. OSU is a bunch of prigs, Arkansas smells and marches like Rice. The rest are just clowns.

Courtney, I’m not being college football band centric here, and I graduated from LSU: you chose wisely on featuring the Texas Aggie band. They are one of the best (the Ohio State guy who responded is a homer and OSU’s band is NOT as good). That being said, maybe review some vids of “pregame” entrances for different schools........ they often times capture the regional/local history of the school. Case in point: search Utube for a big game for Florida State University. Their mascot is the Seminole Tribe, who was indigenous to what is now Florida..... their pre game entrance is beyond awesome and captures the fierce warrior spirit of the Seminoles, which the Florida State University tries to honor. That is just one example.
I agree - there are different types of marching as well. I'm not an expert but I'm told that the Penn State Nittany Lions Blue Band performance of the "Floating Lions" is a complicated move and respected in the band world. I'm also told that the Blue Band is one of only a handful of schools that do high step marching. Although I could be biased since I'm an alum. I do appreciate the precision/pattern marching of the Aggies (pronounced like baggies without the 'b'). Penn State and Michigan performed together once and did Game of Thrones as the theme. I think the action marching (where the shapes they form have movement like planes/tanks/ships which they do on Veterans Day games). Depending on what you like, you'll find a marching band that you gravitate towards.
So cool to see you react to this and just a little fun fact for ya, there’s a saying at A&M that says “Aggies never lose, we just run outta time” gig ‘em! 👍🏻
I knew you were going to like that! And it is the largest military band in the world! It is incredibly impressive and seeing and feeling it in person is something I wish everyone could experience. Note that these are all college students in the Corps of Cadets at the university. A very large number of them will receive commissions in the armed forces upon graduation. Texas A&M Class of 1980 - Gig 'em, Aggies!
The statistic is 40-45% and when the Corps is as large as it is, that’s well over double, even triple other traditional schools (excluding the military academies and other SMC’s). No biggy but I don’t see the point in disputing this gentleman’s notable comment.
Thank you so much! I'm in the band currently and I love being in it and it brings me so much joy to know that people love watching us! Class of '22 piccolo ❤❤👍thanks and gig 'em!
Much as I'd love to have you watch one of their normal home game routines, Ohio State's performance at the NFL game at Wembley Stadium in London in 2015 is especially good.
Courtney thank u so much for showing this. My dad is a big Texas Aggie fan. He graduated from there and I have been going to that stadium since I was born. ❤️
Howdy Courtney! If you notice when the announcer announces the band the whole crowd repeats exactly what he says, which is “Forming at the North End of Kyle Field, The Nationally Famous Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band” and then we yell “Whoop”...it’s like our official cheer. Then, when the drum major is doing his commands, we yell “Whoop” after every command. Next, when the front line of trumpets show off their banner hanging from it, we “oooo” and “awww”. When the band starts playing, they start with the Aggie War Hymn and everyone sings along and towards the middle of the song the crowd links arms and legs and “saws varisty’s horns off” (which used to be our biggest school rival, University of Texas). If you get a chance, look up the “Texas A&M Student Section: Aggie War Hymn, Lamar Game. 9-6-14” by Ricardo Sosa. That video is a good video that demonstrates what we do during the war hymn. Whenever the guys with the Tubas have to do their turns, the crowd grunts because these guys have to almost kneel all the way down to the turn with out hitting anyone. That goes for the big drums too. And the other individuals with other instruments have to bow their head while still playing to make their turns. It’s pretty cool. Then, when the band forms a T, it’s called a Block T, it used to be the symbol for the school. They go back to playing the Aggie War Hymn when they form the Block T. Then when the band is done they have to run off the field and it’s time to start the 2nd half of the football game. These are some of the traditions with the Aggie band at the football games. One of the stories/traditions I’ve learned about the band is that when my dad was at A&M in the late 70s, no one besides band members were allowed to step on the band’s drill field, if you stepped on the field, you were run down and beaten up. There are so many traditions that are awesome to learn about and make you fall in love with Texas A&M, like Midnight Yell, Yell Leaders, Aggie Football, Reveille, the yells we say, and so much more. You should look up Texas A&M Traditions and do a video about it.... All the Best. Thanks and Gig’Em👍
@@CourtneyCoulston You should ask if anyone remembers when Texas A&M played Rice and the game where after the A&M band left the field to let the RICE MOB on (Marching Owl Band). Rice thought they could act like jerks around the Aggies and their traditions by having violin player, electric guitarist, and concert pianist as part of the MOB, but the MOB crossed the line and started making fun of the Aggies commitment to duty, honor and country and the Aggies broke ranks and chased the Relice Band back into the tunnel the Rice Band came out from, and the Aggies chased them in, except the Rice students did not think that A&M cadets almost to a person graduates and is commission into the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marines. So, the Aggies knew how to block the back entrance to the tunnel, there were no escapes, no prisoners and a lot of blood. Last time the Aggies took anything off a lot of long hair students who acted like unpatriotic fools, and the last time any other university tried to twist and Aggie's nose and get by with it.
The Republic of Texas was at one time an independent country. The agreement that brought Texas into the United States provides that Texas may divide into five states. A division into five states would increase Texas’s number of U.S. Senators from two to a total of ten Senators. Such a division would also add eight votes in the Electoral College for Texas.
Texas A&M graduate here. I had classes with several members of our band. I asked them how they did those maneuvers, and they told me that much of it was making order out of chaos. If this wowed you, then also consider the University of Tennessee's Pride of the Southland band performing their "Circle Drill." Another USA university band to watch is Ohio State University.
The A and M originally stood for Agricultural and Mechanical, that's where the "Aggies" nickname comes from. As of 2020, the school has the largest student body in the United States. The video was ok, but its best to see them during a live performance for the full effect.
Aggie fan for years . I still have same reaction as you . They’re still awesome lol on a side note one of the few bands where visiting fans appreciate them as well
"Aggie" is short for "Agricultural", (Farmers), and Texas A&M is Texas Aggricultural and Mechanical University. And since you are learning about America, have any other Texan tell you "Aggie Jokes".
I went to TAMU. Class of 78. There are few things in life that have ,made me swallow hard over and over. Watching the band is one. When I was there, A&M had no music school. The band drill field was hallowed ground and if walked upon, the dorm would empty and someone would be running for their life. I saw a few run down and thrown in the golf course lake across the road. They were great then too.
Devlon Chandler the prairie view A&M band is the only band that I have ever seen the Aggie fans give a standing ovation to. Was so fun and perfectly choreographed. Never seen Jackson State, southern or grambling but I’m sure they’re amazing
@@tomjenkins7246 Southern University's band got a standing ovation from the crowd when they played at The University of Georgia some years ago. Usually, the crowd go to the concession stands at halftime. Look up Southern University at University of Georgia; no one left the stands at halftime. They're THAT good, and this is coming from a Corps-style marching band veteran.
James Poss they are known for their power and range for sure. They are like the big dog of show bands/hbcu’s along with Jackson state. Their rivalry is always to see who’s the real big dog since they are in the same conference. (which is the SWAC conference)
The Ocean of Soul band from Texas Southern University was a really great band to watch when I saw them back in the ‘80s. They blew me away. I also went to an A&M game and was blown away by this band too, but in a different way.
yes, "aggie" comes from the original name of the university Texas Agricultural and Mechanical (I think that's the original name). "Aggie" rhymes with "baggy" or "Maggie" (as in Smith). The aggies also give their name to an entire genre of insulting jokes, similar to pollak jokes (do you have those in NZ?). "How many aggies does it take to screw in a light bulb?" "How many aggies does it take to (whatever..)?" I'm not sure when the jokes started (I'm 63 and my parents knew about them). In the rest of Texas, aggies are stereotypicaly dumb, which is ironic since A&M has one of the top engineering schools in the country. Aggies have an answer joke to all the other universities Question: What do you call an aggie two years out of college? Answer: Boss
One of my favorite A&M traditions is something called Muster which happens every April 21st. There’s a short 10 minute video that was released a couple of years ago about it called “softly call the muster” you should check it out!! A&M is one of 6 senior military colleges in all of the United States, so military history and anything germane to it is steeped within our university’s traditions. I love it
The Aggies' uniforms are based primarily on the United States Army's dress uniforms of World War II. Their ROTC program is the anchor of the university.

All these lesser marching bands are nice, but there is really one one Great College Marching Band. USC Trojans. No band has more Iconic songs, No band has more Original Songs, and No band has more songs. Add in the fact they have been in many, many Hollywood movies and it is the Best. No College Marching band can even come close to listing the accolades The Spirit Of Troy has...
Being out there on a football field doing these types of things (not to this level, granted, I was in high school at the time) takes a while to really get the routines down, then even longer to do while actually playing, but after a few weeks it becomes almost second nature. Keeping the music in sync is actually the hardest part, usually. When you're 40 or 50 plus yards away from the other end of the band, the sound is actually delayed just slightly, and it can make it difficult to get the pieces of the band in time with one another. Wind conditions from day to day can increase the effect, really making things tricky. It's really great for focus and discipline though, and it's a whole lot of fun!
Indeed. I was in high school marching band. Orange and black wool uniforms. They weren't cool in the summer, or warm in the winter (they were, however, very good at keeping the rain off you... up to a certain point), and the hats seemed to only come in two sizes... too big and too small. Also, I'm convinced that crossbelts were originally designed as torture devices for band members. 😂 Oh, and we had to march in the county fair parade and the Christmas parade every year. In my senior year, we were overjoyed to discover that we were marching just in front of the horses, and our crosstown rivals were marching just behind the horses. 😂
@@philiphitt7988 I am not an Aggie but an ex-bandsmen who truly appreciates the incredible discipline and dedication it takes to put such a fine product on the field.
The Texas A&M band used to sell compilation videos of their various performances. Don't know if they still do. Always nice to see someone new discover this incredible band. I have been watching and admiring them for over 40 years.
Some interesting notes: The Texas Aggie Marching Band is part of the ROTC at Texas A&M. The student body doesnt leave before the drill because of their support for the band. The blank seats about the 20 yard line is where the band sits. The drills are changed every week during football season. The drills get increasingly more complex as the season goes on. Generally the last drill or the bowl drill has menstrual drills where we put 2 or 4 people in the same spot at the same time. We call them that because people can get bloody as you go through.
I am a very serious Alabama Crimson Tide fan and I always felt we had a great band until I saw the A&M band. They are fantastic! Our band doesn't even compare to anything like that. I am definitely a major fan of the A&M band and watch their videos whenever I can. Go Aggies!
At 9:06 when you said, "Wow, it's weird to see them run like that," I laughed. I was a cadet at Texas A&M and graduated in 2017, and it's always weird to see band members run. Partly because they rarely do anything physical, and also because they got out of PT for the sake of practicing for these fantastic halftime performances. We were always making fun of the band until halftime; we'd take a 20 minute break from that when they were on the field. The other block in the stands wearing khaki by that entrance to the field was most of the rest of the Corps of Cadets, who are only slightly more socially capable than the band members.
Hi Courtney, the stadium is called Kyle Field, the last time i checked it is the 3rd largest in the US and 7th in the world. While A&M was designated as "Agriculture & Mechanical" it has grown to a major Veterinary, Nuclear/Petroleum/Chemical/Industrial Engineering school. It also holds the top 5 spot in private funding from either Public or Private schools in the US. Roku, The DVR and Fracking have roots at A&M........ Stay safe from the pandemic
@@CourtneyCoulston I guess check them out if you get a minute. Plenty of material on RUclips. They do something special every home game. Usually themed toward something different each game. Also Micheal Smith's TBDBITL is an acronym which means THE BEST DAMN BAND IN THE LAND.
One son is an A&M graduate, another about to enter. The marching style is called "6 to 5", meaning that every 5 yards (white lines) takes 6 steps. It also implies that the show will move mostly from end zone to end zone. There's another marching style which is "8 to 5", and is used by professional marching corps. Google Drum Corps International. It's a very different experience.

Imagine waking up to this at 6:00AM most mornings in the Fall. Howdy to all my fellow Ags! '08 🎉
It's even more impressive in person with the Ags singing along to the music (it's a bit hard to hear in the video). You should go to an A&M home game. There's a midnight yell practice before game day where everyone practices the yells (Aggies don't do "cheers") and songs. It's a hoot! Bring your fiance so you'll have someone to kiss when the lights are turned off at yell practice and when the team scores at the game (both are time-honored traditions at the school).
My three young kids in their Texas High School started playing and marching at their school band. They play during High Schools games on Friday nights up until before Christmas Eve.
GIG EM' AGGS!!! Freakin love seeing people who have never seen the band perform before, I love seeing their reaction. It's even better in person though.
You should see it in person Courtney, the tailgating, the ball game, and the marching band at half time. Texas A& M is superb, yes, but this goes on across the USA, every Autum Saturday, in various forms and fashions, particularly in the Southeastern Conference games, Texas A&M, Auburn, Louisiana State U, Alabama, and Georgia, to name a few. All have stadiums that seat 70,000+. It's a time honored tradition here.
I would also recommend RUclips Searching Blue Devils, Madison Scouts, Cadets, and Bluecoats. Those are Crum and Bugle Corps that are Texas A&M on steroids.
Courtney - Texas Agriculture & Mining (A & M). Very good band. Hundreds of hours practice. These kids play at a VERY high level. Both my sons were in high school band & it's damn hard work!

PS: I believe “Aggie” is their nickname BC they are an agricultural school
Right, A&M stands for Agricultural and Mechanical. It's also a military school, so their band has always been famous for precision marching. Some of the band members can be seen wearing cavalry boots with their cadet uniforms.
@@usafvet100 The ones wearing the boots are seniors.
William, I couldn't have said it better myself. 😄
@@usafvet100 yeah, those boots indicate they are seniors. Senior cadets (a little more than 500 total) in both normal outfits and band outfits wear boots.

I think we should make Courtney an honorary member of the Aggie 12th Man. Gig'Em Courntey!!!
An old vet

Geaux Tigers!
Good advice. REVIEW the material RUclips has to offer.

"Very large" isn't exactly accurate. A little under 40% of all cadets commission, and that rate is even lower in the band.
The statistic is 40-45% and when the Corps is as large as it is, that’s well over double, even triple other traditional schools (excluding the military academies and other SMC’s). No biggy but I don’t see the point in disputing this gentleman’s notable comment.

Much as I'd love to have you watch one of their normal home game routines, Ohio State's performance at the NFL game at Wembley Stadium in London in 2015 is especially good.
The "announcement" at the beginning is the preamble to the United States Constitution, our main founding document.

You should ask if anyone remembers when Texas A&M played Rice and the game where after the A&M band left the field to let the RICE MOB on (Marching Owl Band).

Such a division would also add eight votes in the Electoral College for Texas.

yes, "aggie" comes from the original name of the university Texas Agricultural and Mechanical (I think that's the original name). Aggies have an answer joke to all the other universities

And they do a different Drill every week. My hubby is Aggie Band Class of ‘94.

Some interesting notes:
The Texas Aggie Marching Band is part of the ROTC at Texas A&M.

You might see us leave PT and go to Duncan earlier but you don’t see us when we get up earlier and start PT’ing earlier.

Some few schools and universities are known for having an exceptional marching band. Texas A&M is one of them.
I’m a proud Aggie class of ‘87. I’m now 55 yrs old and I still get goosebumps when the Aggie band performs. They are truly one of a kind.
Agricultural & Mechanical College of Texas was it's original name, was shortly afterward renamed to Texas Agricultural & Mechanical University (System, although "System" was dropped shortly after THAT).
