I have to agree with you. I was angry and sad with the ending, not surprised. I also felt like it was both the conclusion that fit with the rape culture the film was depicting, but also the only possible end for the specific character, herself. For her to be so full of hurt and so damaged by her experiences, and to also be pursuing the form of justice that she was, I couldn't really see her getting a "happy ending" not matter the outcome. I think that's the great thing about this movie, it really brings the message that some things are so horrific that they change people forever. Every survivor will not have this story, obviously, and a crucial part of their moving forward is crafting their own narrative, but I feel like this movie is most effective in demonstrating the damage perpetrators and enablers can do, and how they are able to rationalize and justify it.
truly a crime that you're the first person I've seen to put birds of prey on their list. it was robbed of oscar noms for costuming, makeup, AND best original song (can you IMAGINE living in a world with oscar award winner DOJA CAT?)

i’m so glad to see somebody talking about his house! i don’t think i’ve ever been so genuinely horrified at a film before. the way it uses horror as a device to communicate its themes rather than exploiting the trauma the characters go through for cheap scares is so rare and so well done.
Agreed. The imagary was so precise - most horror movies it feels like they were just "what would be some gnarly shit to jump out at you in the dark?" while here it's all personal to them.

You are seriously one of my favorite critics ever. I just saw one critic's review of Promising Young Woman and it was literally, "I watched the first few minutes then just started skipping through and eventually turned it off." And then felt he can comment on the ending. I like that, unlike this critic, you actually give each film a fair and objective chance while still bringing something personal and honest to each review.
@@nasecoo Yeah. I don't really understand how he can claim to view art/film objectively when his tastes are clearly an influence on how he rates a lot of movies. Honestly, that's the way it is with most critics. If they don't like the movie that's fine, but they shouldn’t just skim it and then assume they've consumed the entire piece.
Also *Promising Young Woman* - I know it was quite dissatisfying to see what happened to Cassie. But the ultimate result uses the revenge trope to highlight the issues in how we talk about rape & sexual assault. Yes, if Cassie had not put herself in that situation, she would not have been harmed, but at the same time-all her attacker had to do was admit his own wrongdoings and take responsibility for them. But because he refused and we have a system that constantly makes excuses for male attackers the same way they would for this one, the only way to bring him to justice was to literally have him arrested.
I saw Tenet in theaters. Renting out a while theater in a suburb during Covid is surprisingly cheap and my wife did that for my 40th birthday. She likes spy thrillers, I like the metaphysics of time. Between the two of us, we enjoyed it. That said, encouraging people to see it in theaters, that was terrible and Nolan was rightly criticized for it.
*promising young woman spoiler alert* *also this comment ended up being longer than I thought, sorry!* The director of PYW stated that originally the ending she had in mind involved Cassie surviving, but scrapped it because she knew that that would just not be realistic. At the end of the day, Cassie was putting herself in an incredibly dangerous situation. She was in the middle of the woods with a large group of men who all had the strength to overpower her (as seen in her death scene), it's almost obvious that something was going to happen to her. The ending gave us one last gut punch of a message, by showing us what realistically happens when an average woman enters a situation like that (as opposed to what happens in other female revenge movies), while also giving us a satisfying scene where the bad guy finally get arrested for his crimes. And that's what I love about it. The way I see it, the ending reminds the audience of the sad truth of the effects sexual assault and violence against women can have on their victims, and how common their sad endings are, but then immediately after shows us that things can change, and we can start bringing justice to said victims, by listening to women and working to change the system (this bit is represented by the lawyer who, after realising the error of his ways, follows through with his apologies by helping Cassie when she needed him).
See I read about this too, and to be honest that's what kind of ruined things for me. If the goal is to deliver a grim, realistic ending to the movie then the least you can do is stick to it! Make the audience sit in that feeling. But instead they gave Cassie one last gotcha from the afterlife moment that trends closer to a big Hollywood finish, in my opinion. I felt that the ending was really uneven. It didn't commit completely to realism OR catharsis, but gave us some of each. Also, the concept of a happy ending that hinges on putting faith in the cops almost feels like a complete joke (especially given the statistics surrounding how many cases of rape/sexual assault get dismissed). Obviously no one can have an objective view of this movie, and I totally understand and respect people who liked it and felt vindicated/empowered/triumphant watching it. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. Casting and aesthetics were perfect though!
"You're a good kitty who does bad things!", you know that's a good cat parent right there, refusing to ascribe the word "bad" as intrinsic to the kitty no matter what kind of hell they raise :>
I feel like Promising Young Woman is in a fight with its marketing department. Serge is absolutely right that movies don't need to - and shouldn't be asked to - provide moral clarity to the audience. The trouble is, the Oscar push for the movie has been full of "free screenings to sexual assault survivors" and "interviews with the writer/director about how revenge is distasteful" and "ad copy insisting that this movie is a feminist triumph." If viewers weren't being told so frequently and loudly that they should view the movie as moral lesson that they're good people for enjoying, a lot of the backlash would probably be a lot more muted.

Every single one of them could go to the police, but the only time the cops actually do something is when they're literally told about Cassie's possible murder, which is basically saying that the sistem only works once it's too late. Anyways, loved your list and cat
A physical place that you can still go to for movies, that usually has a pretty eclectic selection, is your local library. The only downside is that you have to wait a while for new releases, but not really any longer than you had to wait at Blockbuster.
Birds of Prey has literally been one of my biggest sources of joy this past year. It was the last movie I saw in theaters before quarantine. I watch it at least once a month. It just makes me so happy. Seeing all the negative reviews it got made me feel ashamed for my love of it. But seeing your video on it validated and my love. Thank you so much for that!
Checking in to report that I finally watched Kajillionaire on your recommendation! Sure, it was only after a streaming service put it behind a paywall (HBO Max), but still. And yes, it was deeply good, often bizarre (the whole thing about tremors ...), often heartbreaking. I'm so glad I saw it, and I wouldn't have even heard of it without this video. Thank you for this~
I’m 20 years old (gen Z) I miss blockbuster so much! All my other younger gen Z siblings miss it as well(they are 13-18). I just wanted to show that young people today remember it lol
Spoilers for the end of Promising Young Woman: I thought the ending was great. Firstly, I think it made the movie into a true tragedy ( in the classic Greek sense) as opposed to a melodrama. Some things can’t be set right and both Cassie and Nina’s fates were doomed that night at Forrest. Second, it realistically shows that if you are constantly opening yourself up to violence, eventually you won’t be able to escape it. Finally, the scene were Joe comforts Al after he finds “ the stripper” dead is the peak of the writing in this movie. As Joe tells Al that it’s not his fault, he’s going to be okay, he doesn’t deserve this, he is perfectly mimicking what survivors of rape SHOULD hear, but don’t. The supportive shoulder to cry on the next morning is reserved in society for predators, not their victims
I know it takes you ages to make these videos and I really appreciate it! I love that your taste in movies is unpretentious - you just like the movies you like and that's very refreshing. Also I got super excited seeing all the Jurassic Park stickers on your desk 🦕

I think I've rewatched your last video twice already. I'm so glad I found your channel. (your excellent politics and good looks don't hurt, either)
Woah, did not expect to see His House or The platform on any lists. Those were surprisingly incredible movies that left me pondering over the themes long after endcredits.
2:23 yeah, that was a great thing about Blockbuster. That and realizing that they really did not know that just because something is animated didn't mean it belong in the kids section. And then we got Anime that was next to that.
Promising Young Woman is a film that just really hurts me, but in all the right ways. As someone who has experienced this trauma, knows others who have also, the ending was one that was both devastating but so accurate that made it even more painful. Justice is rarely gained without further violence against women and this film shows the realities of that in a cruel and painful picture - Carey Mulligan and Director Emerald Fennell did an incredible job
I tried to get a job at Blockbuster. One of the interview questions was, "what's your favorite movie?" What a question! I pondered it for a moment, and knew they were impatiently waiting for me to answer. I said, "Probably my favorite movie I've seen recently was 21 Grams." The interviewer said, "I've never heard of it." I did not get hired.
Thank you so much for bringing Kajillionaire to my attention! That was honestly one of the most powerful movies I have ever seen. Don't think I'll ever forget it, will definitely be coming back to it. Thanks again! You have a fantastic taste!

Promising Yong Women: the ending is not the massage. The whole movie is the massage - don't be a bystander, don't stay passive. A physical place that you can still go to for movies, that usually has a pretty eclectic selection, is your local library. The only downside is that you have to wait a while for new releases, but not really any longer than you had to wait at Blockbuster.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is based on a play by August Wilson!
10/10 cat extras at the end and her asking for pets is truly a cinematic masterpiece.
I'm like you but my 14 yr old brother doesn't remember it at all, how long ago did the blockbusters close near you??
@@susannarita4259 the last one closed down in our area in 2014 I believe
@@liallialcroc same here I was a freshman in high school when the blockbuster's in my area closed down
Spoilers for the end of Promising Young Woman:
I thought the ending was great.
Finally the love for the platform. I have been trying to get my friends to watch it for so long.
will this man ever have a bland and non-insightful take on anything??? evidence suggests not
I know it takes you ages to make these videos and I really appreciate it! I love that your taste in movies is unpretentious - you just like the movies you like and that's very refreshing. Also I got super excited seeing all the Jurassic Park stickers on your desk 🦕
I feel the need to say just how grateful I am for your videos. They never fail to brighten my day, even when you're discussing dark or depressing or unpleasant subjects, because I enjoy listening to your thoughts and insight so much. I think I've rewatched your last video twice already. I'm so glad I found your channel.
(your excellent politics and good looks don't hurt, either)
im here as an Eva Green stan first and subscriber second, really
Woah, did not expect to see His House or The platform on any lists. Those were surprisingly incredible movies that left me pondering over the themes long after endcredits.
I'm really glad there are people like you who are actually able to talk about movies without having to hate all of it. Thanks dude!
I was just binging ALL OF YOUR VIDEOS and then you post a new one :) made my Sunday evening
I tried to get a job at Blockbuster. One of the interview questions was, "what's your favorite movie?" What a question! I pondered it for a moment, and knew they were impatiently waiting for me to answer. I said, "Probably my favorite movie I've seen recently was 21 Grams." The interviewer said, "I've never heard of it." I did not get hired.
thank you for including anything for jackson it's such a fun time
I really enjoy your content and the quality and editing is so pleasant. This one's for the algorithm, and this is me, off to watch The Platform.
Thank you so much for bringing Kajillionaire to my attention! That was honestly one of the most powerful movies I have ever seen. Don't think I'll ever forget it, will definitely be coming back to it.
Thanks again! You have a fantastic taste!
I absolutely adore your cat and I'm glad it got a cameo. I've been watching all of your videos sense watching your breakdown/review of Birds of Prey and have your movie on my watch list.
YEs!! I love kajillionaire and I've barely seen it mentioned anywhere!
thank you so much for talking about his house!!!! It's so underrrated
THE FROME MYSTERY IS ANSWERED
YAAS! I was so excited when I saw your story on Instagram a couple weeks ago.
Not even watched this yet but I am screeching cause a new upload by Serge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU ARE THE BEST FILM CRITIC ON RUclips I HOPE YOU KNOW IT
We are approaching Dominic Noble levels of cute with that cat, I'm just saying
I cant believe the Iconic christmas wedding planner got a shoutout
1:15 The answer is "Waterworld" and the fact that you don't immediately stop on that and watch it hurts my fragile little heart... with gills... and a tattoo on its back... showing a map to Mount Everest.
Love the positive vibe in this video. And a kitty as a bonus! ❤️
Will definitely check out these movies later. Eva Green is a good reason as any to talk about a obscure film. And yes! Finally someone who also likes JP3! Excited to watch it if you ever do a standalone video about it 🙂
Whenever you upload a new video my day/week/month/year/life just gets better. Thank you for sharing your list!
Me early in the video: Why is that Frome vertical?
Me late in the video. Oh. OH. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Promising Yong Women: the ending is not the massage. The whole movie is the massage - don't be a bystander, don't stay passive.
The end is part realistic in the way that a man can easily overpower a woman, sadly, and part fantasy in the way we get justice.
I was shocked by this ending, but I was satisfied with it for those reasons
This ^^^
God, thank you so much for this list. His House was so good and I never would have heard of it without this video.
I'm deeply appreciative of this. These movies sound wildly original and interesting.
fresh out of watching Kajillionaire at your recommendation, i was entranced. you're a delight, as always. the cat's a bonus.
That "stuck in the middle" forcibly took me back to Reservoir Dogs
How's your ear?
Hello sir you have Posted a new video and I have arrived to Consume the excellent content. And also to Simp
So many good suggestions 🙌 Excited to watch these since I've only seen one so far!
I miss your top 10 lists. You introduced me to so many amazing movies ❤
For some reason I didn't even think to hang it portrait, so now I finally know what to put at the top of the stairs.
As always some of the most diverse movie recommendations. I can’t wait to go watch some of these movies. Thank you!
THANK YOU for listing FOUR OBSCURE FILMS IN A ROW. Nobody does that anymore. Thank you for keeping appreciation of art alive
Okay, it might sound weird but as a little stressed spaniard that doesn't have many good things going for her mentally right now, the fact that the platform was the first of your list made me stupidly happy 😄. It's such a great movie and I barely see it being discussed despite the controversial themes that presents us.
I watched Ma Rainey's black bottom yesterday thanks to your recommendation! I was tasked to choose the movie of the night as long as it was on netflix, and it was such a hit! Thank you so much!
I wish you had a movie club and that I could be in it, haha.
new patreon tier???
Omg the kitty 😻
In the new Duck Tales series, there's an episode that gives Darkwing Duck his first full episode that takes place during the filming of a Darkwing Duck movie being directed by a duck version of Christopher Nolan, complete with scarf, blazer, and floppy blonde hairdo. Just thought everyone should know about that.
I really enjoy your lists. I loved Tenet and Promising Young Woman as well, so looking forward to checking out the rest of the list.
Digging the fromes.
Give yourself a pat on the back for certainly having one of the most unique and diverse favorite movies of 2020 list I've seen.
So happy you've put Proxima on your list! I love family-centric space dramas but was reluctant to watch it because of the underwhelming reception. Seeing your love for it made me finally give it a chance and I loved it! I also watched (and loved) Melancholia thanks to your previous video and am planning to fit Tenet and The Platform into my schedule as well. Your videos are a gift and your recommendations have never disappointed!
I LOVE your dinosaur sticker desk!
And I do hope we get the long timeline for that JP3 Schlock & Awe episode.
I been waitin for this one....TURN IT UP!!!
My favorite film of last year was Red Post on Escher Street, a wonderful empowering film!
Your videos are the highlight of my day, and I just wanted to tel, you that. Hope you’re having a good day. That is all :)
Thank you for showing me the potential of movies and what can be told.
Algorithm bump for you, appreciate your work. Thank you.
I was waiting for this video for long 😆
His House! YEEESSSS! The rest are all amazing, obviously. I just feel like the only person who has ever seen His House, so thank you!
OMG, I love “The Platform” on Netflix. I watched the movie 4 times, first in Spanish and the other 3 times in English and had to show my friends how to Select “English” for Audio and “English subtitles. Great concept
So excited for this! Been watching you for years, and you've been doing an amazing job :)
I was so excited for this video and it did not disappoint !
As always! I appreciate you
Finally someone who appreciates Harley Quinn!!!! 💃
I was so, so sad to see that my local movie rental place closed because of lockdown. There's something relaxing about browsing through a real life collection of movies that you just don't get from scrolling through a streaming service.
I’ve been waiting for this for so long 😩😩
Definitely going to check out some of the lesser known movies you mentioned! Agreed with you on all the well known movies except Tenet. It wasn’t so much the story as the sound editing. Half the movie is completely muffled by background noise.
Always delighted to see one of your videos posted, and this was fun. You've made some interesting choices. I'd love to see them all, but I can't afford to subscribe to all these streaming services. You're right - movies have gone through this sort of thing before, but this is worse.
