As a Canadian, most indie brands end up being way pricier than « always on sale » Pat. The advantage Pat has, for me, is that her shadows never look « too much ». With shinier shadows like Adept, I often end up muting the shine and brightness by putting a matte layer on top of the shimmer (the effect of the shine coming through is gorgeous).
Haha I totally understand Adept coming off as “too much” I love all the shimmer and the sparkle but like I said in the video it really does come down to personal preference ☺️ Thanks for watching!
I love the multichrome in the Huetopian Dream palette. It’s soft, subtle, but dimensional at the same time. I always reach for it when I want an effortless spicy neutral look.
I’ve heard Adept and many indie special shades use a formula which creases on hooded lids, or fades throughout the day. Badtothebrow is really good at reviewing the longevity of the formulas
Yes! I tried the Samarian sunset this year and it was my first time trying adept and I had no idea there shades were so squishy and almost wet feeling and they crease so much on me. My eyes aren’t oily but they are hooded.
Yes please to the single shadow version! I still need to try Adept, the shadows look amazing! I think they have so many stunning palettes. Definitely on my to try list for 2024! Thank you for sharing this, I only own one PMG lipstick so I can’t speak for the shadows, but this is what I hear a lot from indie makeup lovers! I know you’ve said before we’re so spoiled to have indie eyeshadows and you’re so right. Before I discovered indie makeup, nothing was ever sparkly enough for me. Now that I know about indie makeup my life has forever changed! You and Angi were my first two creators in this space and I’m so happy I found you guys when I did, though I wish I discovered the indie makeup world sooner! I was totally following all the wrong people who only buy Sephora makeup. I trust your opinions on these, thank you for all the awesome videos lately! You’re the best Amy! Thank you for introducing me to so many amazing brands ❤❤❤
I have a few adept palettes and I find them to be too thick on my crinkly eye lids. The PM shades I like better since the special shades are beautiful toppers and are not too thick.
mainstream makeup puts their money into marketing and packaging and paying high profile MUAs. Indie makeup (the good ones) put their heart and soul into the 1) formulation 2) shade ranges 3) innovation.
I like the drier more glitter based formula of PMG special shades because I like being able to just lightly tap on a little sparkle or use a sticky base/glitter glue and get something more intense. I find them more versatile in that way than comparable indie shadows. But Im not going to buy a bunch of $128 palettes just for one or two shades. When it comes to an indie alternative to that formula specifically I like the Clionadh glitter multichromes, specifically the iridescent ones. Its not as easy to get the more delicate dispersed sparkle cause they're so soft and easy to pick up too much but its doable. And if I want the more intense look I can use any other matte/shimmer/metallic as a base and pack one on over it.
Pastel Roses UK has drier formulas. They can be varied in intensity at least for me and are a very good price. Not sure how much shipping to the US is though. Glamshop also has shimmers that in effect remind me of PMG
I love sparkly indie shadows, but I'm the same in that I also love a more dry sparkle that I can just tap on top of my looks for a little something extra. I'm definitely not going Pat McGrath, though. My favorite is the Urban Decay Moondust shadows. I LOVE THOSE! Such incredible toppers. 👌🏻💜✨
The only catch in terms of Adept cosmetics is the formula, some shimmers can be putty/creamy and cause issue for oily/creasing eyelids and the shipping times. In terms of pricing I find the OG palettes are cheaper and the newer ones (Seahorse palette) is very high up in price. Even in Canada with shipping and duties it’s a lot of money
I feel like the Pat McGrath price goes on the heavy packaging not the shadows and the adept price does go on the shadows and the packing is tasteful and doesn't pull focus. Great video 🎉🎉
I really appreciate this video I said I'd never buy pat mcgrath that she's ridiculously priced and this is why adept is my favorite brand every shade was better I only have 5 from adept so far but now I know I'm not even missing out! Thanks Amy so much!❤😊
In the UK a lot of indie brands cost so much money to get delivered here. But I kinda have a trust issue with anyone who hasn’t purchased the product and are raving about it. Whether it’s high end, indie or drugstore.
I think it’s somewhat a matter of preference. I have tried both brands and think Adept is just ok. The color stories are wow! But the shadows don’t perform on me. PMG has gotten meh from a color story perspective but the formulas last all day. On the Indie side I am more into Shine by SD and Clionadh. And Viseart is technically an indie brand if I am not mistaken, and the mattes can’t be beat.
I’m sorry to hear they don’t perform well for you. I definitely recommend using a good eye primer since they are more creamy. And the dry sparkly formula from Shine By SD definitely reminds me of Pat!
Odd, I have hooded oily lids and adept does fabulous on me. I only have a pmg quad and it has a shimmer that works nicely but the mattes just disappear almost immediately. I do use primer and glitter glue for both so no idea why the difference. Makes me happy I haven’t dropped big bucks on a larger pmg palette though!
@@omegasobsessions I’m envious that the Adept formula works for you. I am going to try again with a different base and see how it goes. I prefer the PMG large Mothership mattes in the older editions. Her quad and newer versions aren’t as pigmented and they are that more modern luxury matte that people who don’t buy indie seem to like. She’s definitely going more mass appeal.
Totally agree! I personally have never bought any PM products so I can't compare them side by side, but I started buying indie like Adept, TM and Electrum before I even heard of PM. Having all my super sparkly, shifty, bombastic singles and palettes, I cannot picture myself ever needing to buy her palettes 🤷🏼♀️
I love Adepts shimmers. I just wish they would work on their matte formula. If you're gonna charge $70 for a palette, I shouldn't have to reach for another palette. Unearthly has perfect mattes and shimmers.
I completely agree. I think indie brands could outdo any high end brand. Too many gems. Kinda like restaurants.. chain restaurants aren't going to compare to the corner in the wall restaurants usually
I'm with you PML few special shades can be compared with many indie brands or with DM. I love Adept's formula for shimmers and multichromes and definitely I prefer most over PML. The ones I prefer from PML are long gone from the new palettes(red from 5th mothership and the blue from the 1st)... Now I find myself buying whatever Adept releases because is better value, more shades and better formula.
i was in ulta and i was ab to get a mothership palette on black friday but then i was like i know the adept samaritan sunset and element 115 palette came out from adept and they have my all time favorite shimmers ever so i passed on the mothership and got those 2 and im so excited to get them when they send out my preorder! I would’ve liked the mothership but like u said i love sparkly shadows and there’s only 4 in there w a bunch of neutral mattes and for me id much rather have colorful mattes and a ton of multichrome sparkly shades! i agree w u adept is the best!
Pat McGrath continues to put out the same color story over and over and I think even her biggest fans are over it! I love Adept. 😍 I own almost all of their palettes.
During your intro I thought, "yeah, just look at adept cosmetics, they knock PMG down several pegs" and then you said adept! So excited for this vid!!!
Adept crease on hooded eyes sooo easily, Pat doesn't. Also I'm not sure I like their stickier gellier formula in Samarian sunset. It doesn't apply evenly on my eyes and it wrinkles the skin 😐 And I'm only 31. I'll have to experiment with eyeshadow bases again.
Love this video idea! You've also reminded me I wanted to get the Samarian Sunset palette. Last time I went to the Adept site to get it, it was out of stock and not even available for pre-order. Please do a single shadow video
I absolutely ❤ Adept! I have the Heather Austin, Plain Jane and Seahorse. I ended up not getting the latest alien palette because the mattes are not for me (I opted for TOG's new holo misunderstanding palette instead). I have to be selective when purchasing indie brands because I am overseas atm (Dubai) and shipping and duties cost an arm and a leg. That is why review videos from incredible people like you help so much in making wiser purchases 💖
One of my purples from the adept remastered palette is definitely hard panned. I love adept and I love Pat McGrath but I’m definitely starting to love indie brands way more.
Yep, yep love me some ADEPT! And I'll tell you why, it was my very first purchase from the Indie world adept cosmetics! and I've never looked back! I have Pat McGrath in my collection and you're right they are nice. However, like you, in my opinion & but I prefer is an adaptation of a pallet any day of the week. And I would probably not spend as much! I agree with another one of your subscribers here, the Indy brands are bringing their a-game! For sure! 😊
Hey amy! I'm loving your indiemas! Being a fellow Indie lover myself I can really appreciate all things Indie! 😉❤️ And I just love when we get some comparison 🙏👍❤️ never ceases to amaze me! 🥰
Interesting that it's Adept, came unexpectedly for me. I did get the Plain Jane Remastered from Adept, my only Adept palette that I had. Yea, had ;_; Unfortunately, nearly all of the multichromes in that pallete had a weird shift to a khaki green. I thought there was something wrong with my personal palette at first. But I think the palette just shifts like that. I didn't love those shifts because khaki is unflattering on me. So I ended up reselling my palette so someone else can enjoy it. Now I'm wondering if I should give another one of their palettes a shot - but if it's anything like the Plain Jane Remastered, then it's not for me.
I completely agree with you even thought I like PM and have ALL of her Mothership palettes, they are not the best out there. I have learned about indie brands by watching your channel and some others about two years ago and since then I’ve come to realize that PM is over priced, it’s very repetitive and it’s not the only one with truly unique, pigmented, special shadows so thank you for sharing 😊❤
I get that PML started to come out with the Motherships in a very different market, but as someone who has her Mothership I, I think her "special shades" are overhyped. Two of the 4 in that palette are just simple shimmers, the blue is nothing but a dark satiny shade on the eye. You can say a lot of things about it, that it's still beautiful, that it has its place, but one thing it is definitely not is special. Even the more dimensional, sparkly, shifty shades are sg that any indie brand can do better for less.
Broadly I agree - I have a bunch of the PMG motherships but indie brands just have so much more choice at a better price point when it comes to sparkles and shimmers. I prefer Ensley Reign to Adept, but that's a personal preference, as I find Adept a little too heavy creamy. PMG however, does have beautiful mattes and metalics and satins that I have not seen replicated by indie brands - they just blend together effortlessly and the overall effect is very elegant and luxe, I don't know how else to describe it (the Decadence mothership especially is really one of a kind, not sparkly, but omg velvet ). Out of all the brands, I get the most compliments with Ensley and PMG. I have not tried blend bunny yet, but overall my impression so far is that indie brands are killing it with shimmers, and not so much with the mattes ... so I end up combining them with PMG 😊
This comment is making me really want to try Ensley Reign! Sounds like I’m missing out by not having them 😅 And PML does have some really nice satins. I love them but wouldn’t necessarily purchase a palette just because of them.
@@AmyLovesMakeupTotally! PMG is just really expensive per shadow and their last few launches have been meh. One thing I have noticed though ... the really high end brands tend to look better texture wise on my older skin. They are just smoother or silkier or something and I have definitely noticed changes with age and have had to adapt. But their color stories are just soooo boring - like you said, all browns and pinks, it all looks the same, as if all older people work in an office and never party ! 😅😅
Of all the indie brands that I think is comparable to Pat’s shimmer is Glaminatrix. I really don’t like adept’s formula…it can be too chunky and/or almost greasy. A la Minka
Why single out Pat McGrath? I notice a trend were influencers single out this brand for releasing similar color stories, pricing, or not being as innovative as indie shadows. No one mentions that Nars, Charlotte Tilbury, Patrick Ta for example all do the same thing. When Natasha Denona releases another neutral palette influencers say, "oh this palette is warm toned, or this one is cool toned so its okay for her brand." No one mentions that at this price point innovative color stories and super bright shimmers don't sell since colorful makeup is not popular among the wealthy at the moment. No one points out how beautifully pigmented and blendable PMG mattes are either... So what is it about PMG that makes it more objectionable than other brand to you, I just do not understand.

I feel like pat mcgrath just keeps making the same thing. They have even reduced their releases of special shades when that is usually what gets a lot of people to purchase. When the brand started they were very innovative but i think the investors are seriously killing that brand. Indie brands have caught up and exceeded expectations for formulas that are unique, ultra sparkly, ultra shifty etc.
Once you starting using indie brands single eyeshadows and palettes you can't stop yourself ! Pat is very expensive, she puts 6 mattes and 4 "special shades" and charge you a lot, plus the colour story is repetitive! I would buy 10 special duochromes/ multichromes with that amount of money!

For me, I can keep everything with my Sydney Grace. They ship quick. I’m so happy with their customer service. You’re right everyone does have their favorites don’t we. And Sydney Grace is so affordable woman-owned I’m here local for me❤❤❤.
I agree with you!! The Indie brands are bringing their A game. I don't purchase the overprice MUA palettes anymore!

Yes if I’m not wrong she has more oily lids so super helpful! I have more dry lids and haven’t had any issues with Adepts creasing.

For me, I can keep everything with my Sydney Grace. They ship quick. I’m so happy with their customer service. You’re right everyone does have their favorites don’t we. And Sydney Grace is so affordable woman-owned I’m here local for me❤❤❤.
yeah i feel like pats brand really lost most its appeal these days. whatever made it special is dissappearing with time. its sad to see.
