Is it feasible to use straight weight AND bands at the same time with the neck flex? So say 20kg of straight weight and the band to change the strength curve? I like the constant tension of bands but I feel they get a bit awkward as you progress.

Neck training is looked upon as odd by casual gym goers.
Several months ago I had a car crash where my car flipped and I went head first through the windscreen, smashing it.
I wasn't concussed even a second and walked 7 miles to the hospital to get my head sewn back up.
    MRI showed no fractures etc.
The Dr told me my body mass and 19.5" neck saved me from serious head injury.
Neck training can be very useful.

I remember the head strength coach said "if there was only 2 exercises you could do one would be neck and the other the squat" that's how important neck training is. Neck training is very important for contact athletes. This is why I will be starting to train my neck as a 14 year old athlete.
I’ve been doing Muay Thai & Boxing for a year now and I did clinching for the first time yesterday along with some additional sparring. Holy shit my neck is so sore today and I realised that if my neck had been stronger I would have an easier time clinching. Clinching is basically wrestling with the neck in fighting such as Muay Thai and Boxing. This is also a very important part as if done successfully, it can indirectly lead to KO’s as your opponent would lose balance. No wonder the best fighters had such strong necks!
Don’t only do neck training for the aesthetics but do it for the strength that it will provide you in the long run!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I find issues with these specific ways of setting up the exercise:
4:26 - weight is barely moving, very little muscle activation
4:26 & 5:07 - load is vertical to the spine/neck (compression of the spine leads to wear and tear of intervertebral discs)
Yes, you may feel your neck sore but from areas not exclusive to the muscles thus masking the 'bad soreness.' Angle and line of pull/ force are fundamental for maximum muscle activation and preventing wear and tear of joints and intervertebral discs!

    • @doublevision2943
      @doublevision2943 10 месяцев назад

So you'd say it's better to do these exercises lying down or at least in a way so the weight isn't vertical to the spine? I've seen Bald Omni Man attaching the harness to a low positioned cable station attachment and he did his neck extensions leaning slightly forward: is this still "too vertical"? I want to get a harness soon for the problems mentioned in the video especially with neck extensions.
I think it's good that you point this out, it's hard to critic guys like Alex cause of how honest and to the point they are but spinal injuries are no joke, some people are more prone to get them.
I've been studying this old book from 1982 about all sorts of illnesses and injuries and it said that prolapsed discs are genetic so it's not just accumulated damage from lifting the wrong way but genetical weakness that does it first and foremost, this surprised me quite a bit - if it is true. This could be a problem in the neck area, too I expect. Same counts for hernias for example, good reason to research ones family tree and see what ones genetical weaknesses (and strengths) are!
Somewhat interesting: my appendix ruptured in 2020 after I had appendicitis several times for 4 years prior following stressful days/events (with months or even a year in-between). Nobody in my family has ever had problems with their appendix I thought but then my dad told me that one of my great grandfather's died from appendicitis, probably a rupture. Who knows, maybe it's completely random in this case with no genetic influence but I found this fascinating regardless.

Hi Alpha. You have talked about running recently and therefore I want to ask for your advice on this particular problem:
I am progressing in distance running (4days/w) and strengthtrain (4-5days/w).
My main goal is running. On the side I want lose bodyfat/increase vascularity without turning skinnyfat.
I am intentionally losing about 1lbs/week. Which I have done on and off for 18 weeks (gone from 182-165lbs).
    I am 5’10 and I guess about 11% bodyfat.
My lifts are in the novice-intermediate range.
Tho, my problem is that the latest 4 pounds I have lost doesn’t visually appear to be fat (bellyfat in particular). Furthemore, my best/strongest lifts (bench) has stalled (for 10+ weeks) or decreased a bit but my ‘weak’ lifts (e.g. overhead press) are still going up.
I am thinking that the strengthgains are purely because of less bodyweight or improvement in motorpatterns and not an indication of maintenance/increase in mass.
Because of all the running, I am scared that I am heading down the skinnyfat-route super fast.
Do you have any explanation or advice on how I should go about this? Am I overreaching? Would it be better for me to postpone weightloss and get my strength into an intermediate level first?

After studying and experimenting with neck training I’ve concluded that to get that wide neck look that fills your necknole full is simply shrugs. Particularly wide grip barbell with less weight, better ROM. Neck curls are almost useless. That front neck muscle will never grow. It’s like abs. It surprisingly is NOT the muscle that adds width either. The side neck muscles add the size and you cat directly train them without causing injury. The side muscles stabilize the barbell shrug while the upper trap that connects to the skull does the primary work. If you want a wide neck just keep doing shrugs and deadlifts. With enough work, enough weight, enough recovery you will have a broad neck.

I go to a decent little gym, but it's not 'hardcore' and I'm not brave enough to take my neckflex there yet. They have plates which I don't have, and I could hook up to a weight stack. The best machine I've seen is the hydra-gym power neck. I think my high school had some ancient version of it. I'd love to have that at home.

@Alpha Destiny. How long will it take to develop traps and neck without any weights. I heard it grows the fastest, but in my case, those two muscle groups grows the slowest.

Fun fact : The neck is one of the most important muscles for racing drivers, as they have to take high g’s (F1 drivers can take 6). If they did not train their neck it would bounce off the sides of the car.

Hi Alex, this isn't about neck training, but I'm currently running your novice program and I find that the highbar position for box squats is really hurting my traps and neck. Is there any way to maybe increase my tolerance?

I just had to add to this. I had to go through physical therapy because I have bone spurs on C4-C5 that impinge on arm nerves, to the point my right arm was almost paralyzed at times. The PT gave me stretches and exercises to do not unlike what is being shown here, and the problems I had were all 100% cured (though when symptoms return I have to do them).
I have to go through novice linear progression again but plan on implementing some of these weighted exercises into my intermediate programming. Thanks so much for sharing what you do, I'm sure this will be helpful!

I think I might have the same problem. Does it switch on with excersise and the arms become incredibly difficult to move?

    • @HAL-dm1eh
      @HAL-dm1eh 8 месяцев назад

@@SuperEgyptianMan7 It switched on any time the nerves were being compressed, mostly doing something strenuous like working out or say, painting a room and reaching up a lot.
I still deal with it every now and then, mostly due to poor posture (which I think caused it to start with). I can make it go away very quickly with a few exercises.
Good luck dealing with it, hopefully a good therapist can help you also put it behind you for the most part.

A question from different topic. There is a thing that you shouldnt do more than 24sets per muscle group per week/10days. Assuming that its true, would you include the compound lifts to that number ? For example, FBW 2x week, by an example, 12sets per triceps per training session. Would 6sets of benchpress and 6sets of dips count as a 12sets for a triceps ?
    Love you man

I use the ab slings ppl use when they rest their upper arms in them on the chin up bar. We have spongy yoga blocks at the gym I put in it for cushioning. Use an adjustable height cable machine and voila, everything you could want.

Thick neck is a sign of alpha dominance, best way to achieve this is wrestling, grab your gym partner and start breaking out of chokes.
